If there was a list like this about me, I would feel great in the first place. Secondly, while I couldn't fix typos or things like people re-doing actions, I could fix little things in my upcoming work. If something was unclear, I could explain it in the next book, so on and so forth. Plus it would help me to know what people want. Just as we want stories about Iftel and so on, maybe my fans would want to know about something that I could add in. Adrianne asked: >>How many people on the list are writers or would-be writers? Well, I don't have anything published, so I'm not sure which I am. Probably the latter. I have one story that I'm working on. I started it three times and hated it. So I'm keeping the characters and totally changing the plot. I'm changing a few names, ironically one of them is Soljan, my screen name. I didn't really like it, too hard to pronounce. Oh well. I took the PSAT this morning, and I think I did well. The verbal part was okay. Some was very easy, other parts were really confusing. Math was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I hope that's a good thing. I'll add a message when I find out my scores. I only have to wait... As a general rule, everyone likes the collabs with Ellen Guon (_Knight of Ghosts and Shadows_, and _Summoned to Tourney_). I hear that the Bards Tales books were terrible (haven't read them myself). As someone else said, _The Ship Who Searched_ was great. The SERRAted Edge books are a mixed bag. Some people like them, some don't. I kind of fall in-between. They're okay, not great, not terrible. ============================================================================ > From: Jerry Cullingford > _ElvenBlood_ with Ellen Guon (sp?) A major blow to believability... Jerry, don't judge _The Elvenbane_ by _Elvenblood_. The first, I liked a lot (was my first Misty, in fact). The second vastly dissapointed me. Kind of like SG, in a way. Go read _Elvenbane_. BTW - it's co-authored with Andre Norton, Ellen Guon is the Bedlam's Bard books. You know that a book is a Misty book when telepathy has colons around it. :) In fact, I read Elvenbane long before the rest of Misty's books (LHM being the next), and the colons kept nagging me. I knew I had seen them before. So I scanned my bookshelf, and saw my copy of E-bane. I flipped it open, and said, "ahhhh, I see." ========================================================================== From: "Linda Malcor, Ph.D" You know, this isn't really a spoiler anymore. And why would whoever sends them change that? After all, that's what regular Companions are for -- to be reincarnated Heralds. To: Subject: Arbonne/Elvenblood Message-ID: <15OCT96.18532710.0194.MUSIC-+AT+-ACADEMIC.TRUMAN.EDU> Song for Arbonne was probably my least favorite GGK novel, which, BTW, still makes it better than 95% of what I've read in my life. For anyone who's interested in starting on Kay, these are his books, in order of my personal favorite to least. Not that anyone has to read them in this order, but I like to know these things when I take a chunk out of a new author. Tigana Fionavar Tapestry (Summer Tree, Wandering Fire, Darkest Road) Lions of Al-Rassan Song for Arbonne Read any of them, really. Lions just recently came out in paperback. Come to think of it, Song for Arbonne is the only one of these that has a pretty much thoroughly happy ending, IIRC. The Fionavar books end relatively happily, but only after all your (okay, *my*) favorite characters are dead. Tigana and Al-Rassan are just miserably depressing. So only read those if you can handle that kind of book. Elvenblood and Elvenbane are co-written by Misty and Andre Norton, not Ellen Guon. Ellen Guon co-wrote the Bedlam Bards series, which at the moment only consists of Knight of Ghosts and Shadows and Summoned to Tourney. I liked both of those books well enough, though they're certainly not the best of Misty's work. Bedlam Boyz is a related book, by Ellen Guon alone, and while I've heard people say they hated it, I thought it was excellent. (It was on Terri Windling's list of the notable fantasy books of its year, BTW, so nyah ) Elvendude is also similar, and it's by Mark Shepherd, who is a very nice man, but the book, IMHO, sucked. I got it at half-price and it still wasn't worth what I spent on it. As for the Andre Norton collabs, I only read the first, and I thought it was just fine. Good, solid fantasy fare. The dragons were kinda nifty -- this said from the perspective of someone who usually gags and sets a book down if it has dragons in it. I don't know, I found it enjoyable. The second may have been worse. A general rule of thumb, IMO, would be to read most of Misty's single-author stuff before the collabs. They're usually better, though sometimes the collabs turn out to be worthwhile. Read all the Valdemar books in rough order -- start with Heralds of Valdemar (the "Arrows" books) or Vows & Honor (the "Oath" duology), then read the one you didn't start with. Then By the Sword (a personal favorite of mine), then forge on into the more recent books -- MageWinds and MageStorms. You can muck around with the order a little bit, but if you do it too strangely, you'll just confuse yourself. The best of the urban fantasy books is Children of the Night. I'd also recommend the above-mentioned Ellen Guon collaborations, and Chrome Circle, which is co-written with Larry Dixon. The others are okay if you have the money, but I wouldn't starve myself to lay hands on a copy. Now comes the firestorm of protest. The Diana Tregarde books suck! Chrome Circle was dumb! You *liked* Bedlam Boyz?! The fun never stops on the Mistylist. Also, I didn't catch the *method* or whatever, it was a while ago since I have read it, I guess it is time to read it again. ~Cassie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Oct 1996 23:50:58 GMT From: ajfabbey-+AT+-powerup.com.au To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Co-authored books Message-ID: <199610152350.XAA01102-+AT+-enterprise.powerup.com.au> A > Are the books that are co-authored with Mercedes Lackey a good read? The first book of Misty's I ever read was co-authored with Anne McCaffrey and I loved it. That led me on to solo writings when I found AoQ - and I've never looked back since. I can't comment on the Misty/Andre Norton books yet since I haven't read them - they're on my shelf waiting patiently. I think co-authored may depend on how much you enjoy the writers individually. I'm not a great fan of Andre Norton's adult work and thus didn't really enjoy the Trillium series although I like both MZB and Julian May. I'm still holding out hopes for the Elven books since Misty was part of them. No, I was wondering the same thing myself. Several people have suggested that it's just Talia putting herself into the story, but I don't think so, she's READING it. There is a long time in between Talia and Vanyel, so maybe the story's been corrupted some. I kind of like to idea someone (sorry, I already deleted that message) suggested, that, since there were no witnesses, one was created to tell the story. Question: My friend and I were arguing about this earlier, was Talia's evil brother Justus older or younger? I think he was older, but I'm not sure. (I keep having to borrow the books from friends - I'm having trouble getting ahold of my own copies.) Also, is there any indication of the age range among Talia's brother's and sisters? (Probably a moot point, but worth a shot.) I have GOT to read the rest of the Valdemar books! - the snippets I've been getting from the list are driving me CRAZY (-er). What a lot of catching up (and MAJOR skimming of posts -- made the mistake of resubscribing to the list just prior to a long weekend ACK!!) quickly: re: Loreena McKennitt -- I agree with the assessments that Kenny and others made. Sorry i didn't catch the name of whoever wrote the post as to what sister did what and to whom etc. -- whoever you are, i THINK that the McKennitt song was opposite to what you wrote for the other versions (I THINK, but I am most likely remembering incorrectly). Can you please compare and tell us (or just me personally unless you think the rest of the list would like to know as well) re: ATWOOD -- haven't read much of Atwood but thought I'd leap (well, ok, maybe just twitch a little) to her defense. I didn't think they were all that bad (but admittedly i've not read "handmaid's tale" as whoever-it-was -that-didn't-like-atwood's-books has). the style is very different than the stuff i usually read (i'd say much more sarcastic in a kinda, well, i suppose mean or even cruel way). Have to admit also/though, that i came away from reading the books wondering just what it was that happened and why. the stories (the ones that i'd read anyway) didn't seem to MEAN anything (but, OTOH, it's probably not that there aren't any (hidden metaphors, messages etc), more likely, that i'm just too dense to pick it/them up!!). to make long story shorter -- I didn't think they were THAT bad and i liked them in a nebulous kinda way... this from Mat T, sparked a thought.. Talia's odd, > aside from the Empathy, she's probably odd in how many little Gifts > she has. In the arrows trilogy, talia is visited twice by recently killed heralds (Ylsa, Kris). have we read of any other characters who were visited by friends who've "gone over to the other side"? Vanyel, i remember, by the shadow lover, but that kinda doesn't count. do you think that it was an "ability" specific to talia (because of her Empathic gift and/or one the the "many little Gifts" she had) or because of something else (i.e. everybody sees their friends who're in the havens, we just haven't read about it elsewhere and we only read about it this time because of, let's say, the violence of their deaths). If the former, would that mean that in order for her to have "seen" these heralds, she would've had to have had a strong emotional tie (but then, i'd thought that ylsa and talia were not that close, keren and talia yes, talia and ylsa - enh)? hmmph. did that make sense?
