Is this referring to Elspeth's talking to Van? If so, I don't think it's a particular gift. Van is her "great-great-many times great grandfather", and he originally pulled her and the rest of her group into sorrows. If her ability to see and converse with his is a gift, then it's one that's also possessed by Darkwind, Firesong, Skif, Nyara, and the Griffons. And, his spirit was "assigned" to Sorrows, not in the Havens like Ylsa and Kris. This is just a little notice to some of our newbies. There has been a decided upswing in the use of faux divinity on the list recently. Remember that Lady Thess is the only one who can actually name a god or goddess on the list (She is the Goddess of Nomenclature). Unless she names someone to be her avatar in her absence (she seems to have disappeared into the obscurity of work-induced lurkerdom), everyone will just have to wait until she gets around to a Naming. Until that time, it is customary to use "soon-to-be (I hope)" in front of any godhood that your have requested. Also, several people (I won't name names because you will know who you are) are on the list of Soon To Be Drifting Ashes. Please, snip and braid, or the list becomes unmanageable, Auntie Mel becomes testy, and I become downright bitchy (as list-members will attest, I am sure). BTW, in case you are not familiar with the terms: snip means to delete the quoted material in a response that is not relevant to the response. Braiding is when you combine responses to several postings in one message. A rule of thumb is "your quoted material should never be longer than your response." Another rule of thumb is "One-liners are *EVIL*!" [emphasis mine]. BTW, in case you are wondering how to join the Drifting Ashes, just post a response with 2 or more pages of quotation and less than one screen of response commentary. That generally will get the job done. =) I am not going to say that TINAF, because that would be obviously misleading. Rather, this is a friendly shot across the bow with a high-powered blow-dryer. I read the LHMs before the AotQs, so when I came across that whole scene from the book, I laughed. Talia's reading cheap romantic trash (equivalent to our K-Mart books) that has nothing to do with reality. But let's remember that nobody had a clue as to what happenned -- just that Vanyel went North, and that there was a huge hole in the ground and a lot of dead bad guys lying around, who obviously were not harboring WaFFs for Valdemar. So, every writer who wanted to get a book sold wrote what they thought happenned. As time passed, the stories got more and more absurd and wrong. For one thing, Vanyel didn't have a sister by the name of whatever-it-is-it-isn't-Jissa, who doubly, couldn't have been chosen. I wouldn't mind reading the book, though, just to laugh at some poor no-talent writer's (not Lackey, somebody she created inadvertently) attempts at a good historically set love story/adventure. Oh, did any of you notice...if you have a book, please look it up...when Kris pulled Talia up on Tantras, the book says he pulled her up in front of him. then they galloped into a hail of arrows, and it says that Talia was sheiled from most of them by Kris' body. How is this possible if she was in front of him? Please look it up and let me know...Thanks. Jacquelle. Oh, very clever, Worf. To: Subject: Lewis quote/to Sandy Message-ID: <16OCT96.14211878.0044.MUSIC-+AT+-ACADEMIC.TRUMAN.EDU> Thank you, whoever you are, for posting that C.S. Lewis quote about escapism being an accusation that only jailers use. I've been thinking a lot about it over the past week or so, and still am, off and on. I'm still not entirely sure what I feel about it. ("Angry." "You skipped straight to the angry? I gave you all that good right up front!" Guess who's a compulsive Mad About You watcher?) One thing does occur to me, though. C.S. Lewis himself is about the least escapist writer I've ever known or heard of. He wrote fantasy very much in the way that Danya described earlier -- to make ideas more accessible and understandable by giving his readers a fresh perspective on them, letting them hear old stories in a new, attention-catching way. He was IMHO the most brilliant theologian of the 20th century, and his books were about faith, evil, humanity, justice, grace, and every other serious topic you could possibly think of. I find it interesting that C.S. Lewis in particular would sing the praises of escapist literature. I don't quite know what to make of it, but I do think that he didn't see as much of a gulf between escapist literature and literature that adds to our understanding as I've been seeing, which puts a somewhat new perspective on the whole question. On the other hand, I think my perceptions are colored by having been involved with a type and level of escapism that Lewis probably never would have dreamed of. There's a very nice (okay, not *nice,* this woman has probably never been called *nice* a day in her life) -- good article on Patricia Kenneally-Morrison's homepage about the dangers of losing yourself to fantasy. Anyone who's enjoyed this thread at all should really go and read it. Don't search for her name; I like to have never found it that way. Search for "lizardqueen," and the address will turn right up. Sorry, Sandy, I deleted your address by mistake, so I can't send this privately. I did get those books; didn't you get the check I sent you for them? If not, send me your slowmail address, and I'll send you another one. I loved Through a Brazen Mirror. The deeply ironic thing is, though, all that time I spent whining on the list about missing only Sword and Sorceress 4? When I went home and checked, shortly after you'd offered to send me a copy, I discovered I *have* S&S 4. It's *5* I still don't have. Oy. But thank you anyway. In this case, the fool is much more foolish than the fool who follows him But...if anyone finds Sword and Sorceress 5 in her local used book store...I still don't have it.... I'll try to make up for it, though). Anyway, I have the Loreena McKennitt version too (and oh my gosh is she wonderful or what?? Advice to everyone who like traditional celtic/irish/scottish/ music, listen to her albums!) And it's the same as the others, basically. I can see which versions she listened to, as well, because there are definite echoes in her lyrics. (Side note: the one line that stays the same no matter what is "the eldest pushed the youngest in"....interesting..to me, anyway!) ***** I second Hth's recommendation of that essay by Kennealy-Morrison (who, by the way, sounds like a lot of fun). Good essay, good points, lots of thought-provoking ideas. ***** I've read all of Guy Gavriel Kay...he turns his stories so beautifully, you want to cry. Plot twists, new characters, turns of speech, all of them are so precisely crafted and beautifully placed that they make your heart break. Even his worst is some of the best writing I've ever come across. ***** Just as a plug for the older sci-fi/fantasy genre: I've been rereading Ray Bradbury lately. Can that man write! I recommend him for required reading, since his stories are some of the backbones of current SF/Fantasy today. Latent book report? I wish I'd discovered him in high school! ***** As Jaguar said, Folks, I love Methos and Highlander too (may they both live forever in peace and harmony) but this is indeed the Mercedes Lackey list. Please keep some Misty content in your posts, so they aren't completely superfluous. Maybe it's time for Mel to repost the FAQ? Use those ObMisty's! That's what they're there for! ***** ObMisty: I would have loved to know Yfandes--she sounds like the ideal partner for Van...level-headed, balanced, all the things that Vanyel needed in a life partner. Hmmm. I've been mulling over the question of how Companions know whom to choose--maybe it's something like a life-bond. It just hits them, and they know. It certainly *is* a life-bond anyway, though not romantic (as far as we know). Then again, Companions do seem to have some foreknowledge of their Chosen. Are they told in the Havens? Or are they choosing the same soul (reincarnated) over and over again? Maybe there are specific pairs that are set up for eternity (like Van and Stef/Lendel seem to be) and we are seeing these pairs over and over again in Companion/Herald bonds. Hmmm. Just some musings.
