Maybe serveral different ones that rotate.(Even companions need a break!) I would guess that the companion who is MOC is probably either a herald that was MO or one that was the monarch. It would expain how the MOC has so much "inside" info on how things work in court and how they know exactly what the job of MO entails. As for Gwena, somehow I got the feeling that at some point Rolan realized there wasnt a companion around for Elspeth and they needed one FAST. So they ended up with one that didnt have alot of experiance. Or rather, recent experiance. Who knows? Maybe Gwena was one of the first heralds of Valdemar, went to the Havens to relax for eternity, and when Rolan made the request they said "hey, we've got a problem, can you take care of it?" and just shoved her out.It would explain why she doesnt know much but was "good enough" to become a companion. So, maybe the Herald Florian was died later than 17 - Ylsa appeared much younger, and so did Kris, I think, when they appeared to Talia. Seems to fit with MZB's telepaths on Darkover -> their projected images in the overworld resemble their physical selves, but the way they perceive themselves to be. So I could look like I did whe I was 17, and not the way I look now. However it seems nicely implied by Misty that Companion double images are supposed to resemble the Herald (or person) the were just previously incarnated as. I don't think we really do know who Florian is. :shrugs: firemist ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Oct 1996 23:31:15 -0700 From: "Linda Malcor, Ph.D" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Grove-born/foreknowledge/ Message-ID: <199610170631.XAA22280-+AT+-latimes.com> At 05:02 AM 10/17/96 +0100, gar&julie mclaughlin wrote: >----------------------------------------- >Speaking of Sunsinger and Shadowdancer, do we know if Misty is ever going >to get around to writing about them? I've been meaning to contribute to this list since I first sub'd; but between the difficulties with my ISP and my job [a negative subject I'll leave untouched], I haven't been able to do so. I agree that as a writer reading a list devoted to one's work would be a benefit-whether it provides criticism or compliments. Usually the most useful-and least welcome-is the criticism. I am a writer. I have been writing since I was 14 -[actually I wrote my first poem-to my mother-when I was four...she still has it :)]. I have yet to be published [can't really say I've tried to be either]. To Lady Silvermoon: :-) Consider Poe and Dickinson-even Frost. They were barely recognized as 'writers' in their lifetimes. Their popularity mainly arose after their death. They wrote because they *were* writers. just as we do because we are. They may have wanted to be published because to have that fact recognized-but more than likely [which I can understand] it was probably because they wanted to be able to earn money doing what they loved. Are all writers dreamers?! *** A terrible thought familiar to any writer: how many worthy writers are LOST due to poorly presented ideas, overworked editors, quota limitations, etc. It's something to consider. *** Even worse-suppose the Misty had never been given her due?!!! :< ~shudder~ As for the collaboration-I have 'Elvenbane'-love it! I was reading Norton [one of my favorites] before I had even heard of 'Mercedes Lackey' and this is the book that encouraged me to read some of her own stories-another plus for co-authoring! Now, I think I'll stop boring you. Love this list-especially the character analysis-it helps me to apply some of these types of questions to my work before I submit it-and makes me want to check and recheck [in lieu of a copy writer]. :-> Thanks, T. S P O I L E R I think Karal ended up blindbutnotreally so the common folk will see him as a hero and the personal rep of Vkandis. Altra alludes to this, mentioning that his blindness will mark him of Vkandis' favor. Can you imagine this tall, serene young priest, obviously blind to the common eye, but who knows what is going on about him anyway - no one who doesn't know about Altra will know how he does it. When he talks in the council chambers, his pronouncements are going to seem as if they came straight from Vkandis himself. Solaris is smart to send him back to Valdemar, because now he WILL be the most effective emissary she could send, which is probably what she foresaw for him in the very beginning, though not clearly. BTW, I thought Van & Steph & Yfandes were headed for the Havens for a well deserved rest! Haven't they been in service to Valdemar for over 700 straight years? I flipped it open, and said, "ahhhh, I see." > I've started using that device in my stories to indicate telepathic talk. It's a helluva lot easier to read, though. Before, when it was just italics, it was sort of hard to separate them from the private thoughts of one person. Very annoying. Hated that. ======================================================================= Hmmm...while I'm writing this, re: magewars: Mat, don't forget (well, too late, but better late than never), Green-eyes's shieldmate Featherlight. He's getting a bit left out...unless you count BlueFlame's one-paragraph post. ======================================================================== Blessed be, Jaguar Leader of the Cat People "... intimidating. The Chronicles of Pern:First Fall is out in paperback now, and it has stories about the original survey, the founding of Ruatha, the founding of Benden Weyr (the long awaited Torene story), a dolphin story and one about the evacuation of some of the original colonists. She's got another one coming out early next year about the Second Pass. Overseas it's being titled Red Star Rising, the Second Chronicles of Pern and its already been released there. They're re-editing it for release in America and it will be titled Dragoneye or something along those lines. Ob Misty:I saw a blurb somewhere about the release of a collection of short stories about Valdemar titled Sword of Ice and Other Stories of Valdemar. It's slated for release in January. I was wondering about Skif and Nyara. It seems like Misty pretty much got rid of them when she decided she didn't have a plot for them. We only see Skif in SW when they thwart the assasin. She then mentions in SR that Skif and Nyara are back with K'Leshya acting as sort of ambassadors. I really would like to hear more about them. "We're Starfleet Officers. Weird is a part of the job." Wherever Van, Stef and 'Fandes went was time dependent. Sounds like they are all being born as mortals again to me. If that turns out to be the case, Misty had better NOT bring Stef back as a Herald and Van as his Companion! I'll throw the book further than across the room if that happens! Those two deserve a chance to live "happily ever after" for a change! While some people may put themselves into a story when they read it, other do not. I don't ever stuff myself into a book while I'm reading it. (I believe this is an argument which has been previously used to prove that Talia wrote herself into the story) I don't see myself interacting with the characters. However, I will become engrossed in the story and it will seem extremely real to me. Couldn't the lines you quoted mean that Talia was simply drawn away from the mundane world by the wonder of the story in her book, rather than writing herself in as a Herald? However, I am for the argument that the book was simply inaccurate. It is said several times in the books that information relating to magic is highly inaccurate in Valdemar and that is was impossible to even talk about non-mind magic.
