I did it with the scene in question (the one about Van, not the one about Talia), in fact. In my version Van defeated Learth but had to stay up North to guard the border; the two of them live quite happily together until Van dies of old age; then Stef goes back to Haven and tells the wrong story--the one where Van dies fighting Learth--so that's how that version got into the history books. ;-> I think Talia was doing the same thing that I did, only with a thirteen-year-old girl's solution to the problem: riding in on her very own Companion to save the day! I think Orson Scott Card did that with "Lovelock" with Kathryn Kidd, and it seems like a good idea. Sometimes you don't catch discrepancies in the plot, a weak plot, bad description, etc., by yourself, but if you get feedback, it's generally better. In BTS, I never thought that Kerowyn and Eldan's companions had previously chosen. I don't see any reason why companions who haven't chosen can't leave the companions field if they want, and they were certainly needed during that battle, and if they maybe had tack on (I can't remember if they did or not) Rolan had his formal tack on when he went on his search in the start of AofQ. But this is all just an all-of-a-sudden thought.
