Actually, no, Arrows of the Queen was the first novel that Misty published. I agree with Esme and Julia(?) that you should read the books in the order that they were written. For one thing, if you don't read the "infamous" training class scene in AotQ, you will be missing a huge chunk of info. BTW, if you really insist, you can go on and stick your foot in your mouth now. I do know there is at least one in Vanyel's time, 'cause it's about Vanyel and his affair with Jonne. (I should affix these things that I mention repeatedly to my sig. "Read Swordspoint." "The anthology has a story with Vanyel and sex." "Misty's going to DragonCon.") I do play LARP, and...I don't know if the folks are necessarily *weirder,* but Live Action seems to be more accessible to new roleplayers, so the people often have less experience and, I guess, less savvy. Besides, I think there are inherent limitations to telling a good story in Live Action games. It's just not possible to do the same kind of drama as you can do in a night of regular ("tabletop?" I've *never* played around a table) gaming. It's kinda fun though. I never imagined myself in the stories, per se. I would choose a "viewpoint character," and see everything as though I was that character, not myself. I don't do that so much anymore -- probably because I'm so often inside my own characters' skins that I don't have the energy to go personality-hopping in my free time. Another classic writer of this pattern is J.R.R. Tolkien. Almost all of his works were published posthumously. His main fame in life was as one of the premier Old English philologists at Oxford. As I understand it, the only reason that LotR was so complete was that he was writing it as letters to his son during WWII (which also explains the growing darkness, which parallels the Battle of Britain). His other tales were much more fragmentary since he was only working on them for a hobby, and never really intended to have them published. BTW, interesting side-note: Hugh Lofting wrote many of his Dr. Doolittle stories during the Battle of Britain, also. It is fascinating to compare two such works with the same genesis, but such different character. > Are all writers dreamers?! Of course, we are. The e***s (sorry, can't bring myself to say the word) weren't as bad as imagined. I managed to read almost all of Elvbenbane in between studying (I know, I'm incorrigible but Misty does that ot you.) and 3/4 of If I Pay Thee Not In Gold this afternoon for 3 straight hours. E'Bane was ok, but a bit slow-moving. IIPTNIG (Whew, that's LONG!) was pretty good, the idea behind it was quite original, especially the bit about the demon. I'm glad PA managed to restrain himself with the punds, though. It would have been *ghastly* to have punning together with Misty writing. Misty's parts were recognizable and I assume the rest was PA's. (Windsong, here's your cue......:)) What does anyone think of the Misty collabs with Joshepha Sherman & co. that produced Castle of Deception and Fortress of Frost and Fire? &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& About McCaffrey, IMO, All the Weyrs of Pern *did* finish off the stories, for me anyway. (BTW, I *liked* ATWOP too) After all, they've got the technology back, Thread is eradicated and Robinton is dead. And I *refuse* to read a Pern book without Robinton. I didn't much like the ones before Lessa's time. &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& Lori asked: >What I really want to know today is >why there isn't a book written explain Urtho and his gryphons? At Sunfall Weyr we have a bunch of people who have who have been war-gaming (especially D&D) for over 20 years as well as a bunch of newbies. There is major writing talent in the Weyr (several published authors) as well as professional drama types. As online RP coordinator, I script out an RP session the way I would an acting Improv session. The results are are infinitely more dramatic than when the dice are interrupting you during play (We do use dice in the prep work, and the two GMs running each session do have dice handy, but we never let it interfere with the drama.). (All RP sessions are open to members of Sunfall only and take place in prive chat rooms. They are for entertainment only and no copyright violation is intended.) Actually, I myself once wrote a paper for a feminist philosophy class about language and power, and one of the main points was that certain groups of people (primarily academics in almost any field) deliberatly obscure their meaning with buzzwords and encoded double-talk to make their work less accessible to any but a select minority of similarly trained experts, thereby concentrating most education in the hands of a very few with the money and patience to go through many, many years of specialized schooling. That's why I'm better at fiction than nonfiction; I don't know, somehow I have this way of making things as clear as possible, even when I'm not supposed to Doomed my attempts to go on to grad school. No, I was talking about in-person LARP, open to the public, you show up on the appointed night, make up a character, and go to it. There's no way for the referees to have any kind of control over what's happening; usually they aren't even aware of it until it's over. So it's pretty madly disorganized, which I don't like. But I did play a mage over the summer, and when I go back this spring, I have a troll character all lined up. So obviously I don't hate it. And I catch myself changing viewpoints with the main characters of the episode. Ah well. I guess it's a kind of escapism. I really hate it when a story goes the way I don't want it to, so I change it to the way I like it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Kory wrote: >>>I have to disagree, Esm. While Pern is definitely the type of series one begins with the first published novel, Velgarth isn't. I started with LHM, and I don't think I'd have liked it as much if I had with Arrows. Arrows are too...mind-candy-ish. Except for book 3. BUt they're more cut and dry, none of the high heroic things like Holding Off Leareth, or the romantic scenes like..oh....Bolting The Door Closed And Kissing The Most Powerful Mage In The Known World...nor, imo, the funny ones like The Van-Jervis Sheep Joke. It's just a better trilogy. LHM can enchant, Arrows is more "Ooooo...how CUTE!", all the way through. Yes, Kri's death tears yor eyes, but it the tril doesn't end with as much of a warm glowy feeling as The Fading Voices And Memory Losing Herald...<<< I started on Velgarth with T&K, then I read Arrows. *Whoa!* I checked the front cover to see if the same author really wrote it. And I did a double take on LHM after I read Arrows. And I have to agree with you, Kory, that Arrows were a bit juvenile. It's more like for 14 year old giggly bubbly girls who love horses and cuddly cuteness. LHM was more refined and concentrated, as well as more intense in the family relationships, friendships, public opinion, besides the conflicts as a Herald who has seen so many friends die in combat. The main conflict in AotQ was Talia getting through the Academy alive. Which she did. I can't remember much about AotQ, because it was kind of warm and fuzzy, not too hot, not too cold. The best part, I have to say, is when she is helping Keren cope with losing Ylsa. If only the whole book were like that... But I loved AFlight, because as Talia grew up, the contents grew up with it. The best, IMO, has to be AFall, though. Before that book, the only book that made me cry was Where the Red Fern Grows. The scene of Kris's death, Talia sending up the headless arrow and a broken one, Talia's attempted suicide and her reasoning, and the denouement: When Talia finds the flowers on her bed on her wedding day, were definite tearjerker scenes. I bet my copy of the Queen's Own omnibus from the SFBC has tear stains on those pages. LHM, I think was good from the first book. Bratty kid of a country aristo goes to the city, meets a terrific protege of his aunt, and falls in love. And it doesn't much matter that the protege is a blond boy with floppy hair. Reading and watching Vanyel's life is like one big tragedy with several moments of bliss. Every book of that series made me cry at one point or another. The scene where he actually discovers what it really means to be a Herald, and it was too late for him to share it with Tylendel, was one of the best things I've read in my whole life. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Kory also wrote: >>>Yes! I thought you were the Elton John freak? country music: the world's greatest oxymoron;P Spiff thinks I'm nuts, but I love country music. I also love Elton John. It depends on the day if I prefer Reba or Elton. If I had a really great day to a good day, I'm more likely to listen to Elton. If I had an OK day with not much going on, I listen to whatever's lying around. Then, if I had a really crappy day, I'd listen to Reba. Like today. I *hate* pep assemblies... we have the worst sound systems... And the world's greatest oxymoron is either Government Intelligence or Rap Music. A thought on Country Music: What if they had something similar to Country music in Velgarth which a lot of people loved, but the rest absolutely hated? If the Companion liked Country Music, and the Herald didn't... Hey, it's kind of reminiscent of that scene with Tarma and Kethry absolutely hating Leslac, but Warrl thought he was a very talented musician. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Danya wrote: >>>Okay. I was really surprised, and when I'm surprised, I tend to lash out... so I 'magined Wakko Warner appearing with one of his trademark mallets and... you get the picture. When you have a series that has been written as many stand alone singles or trilogies, it really shouldn't matter where you start because of chronology, but rather because of who you are. I remember some answer from MZB to a question about where people should start her Darkover novels and she said that it all depended who you were. The one perticular I do remember is that a teen-age girl would best begin with Hawkmistress. Prepare to be stunned. This is my right zinger of a question. Get ready. Here we go. I forgot. No, all jokes aside, this is it. How should I word it? Ok, I'm really asking now. Do you remember when in MPawn, Vanyel gets blasted open and Joshe (I'm not sure that was his name) and Savil checked him out? Good. Now, do you remember the list of gifts that Savil said Vanyel had? I don't have my book, but here they are as I remember them: Mindspeech (both receiving and sending) Fetching the "all important Mage Gift" Empathy "enough Firestarting to ensure he would never need another match." "and, as though Gods had taken some strange sort of pittance, BARDIC GIFT" (shouting mine) Do you remember that? Somebody who has their books can textevd it, but I'm |absolutely| +positive+ she said he had Bardic. HOW COME HE NEVER, EVER KNOWS IT AND IN FACT OBSESSES ABOUT NOT HAVING BARDIC EVERY NOW AND THEN????????? WHAT'S UP WITH THAT??????? If he's such a powerful mage, he has to know every aspect of himself as intimately as possible (except his emotions, he never did think clearly when it came to matters of the heart). I hate to say this, but was this another matter of Misty forgetting or not thinking things through? It's the only thing that makes sense to me.
