Did we read the same book? and Cen also wrote: >>I think that somewhere around the second book, I would have told him [Vanyel] "Girlfriend, you got to build a bridge and get over it!" << I have actually said something very like this to friends I felt needed to hear it. But if they just weren't ready to cross that bridge, I didn't say "I'm outta here, you're a downer and I don't want to deal with this anymore." I don't indulge them if they're wallowing in self-pity, but I am willing to listen to someone vent their pain and frustration- there is a difference. Yes, there are people who seem to "enjoy" their tragedies, they like the attention they get, they get to be victims and get taken care of. I do not believe Van was in this category. He was so busy taking care of everyone else that he never got time to take care of himself. Maybe he should have stopped being so damned noble, told everyone to deal with it on their own, and taken off for K'Treva Vale for a few years and hung out in the trees! This is a serious question asked out of sincere curiousity and is in no way meant to be snide- Cen, how many times have you read LHM? Are your impressions based on one reading, or have you read the trilogy more than once? I'm asking because I have found that my impressions of characters and plots in Misty's books often change quite a bit on a second reading. For instance, I liked BTS and the Winds trilogy much much more the second time through. And Cen, if you're utterly sick of the Vanyel subject and don't want to pursue this, I'll understand. I'm just feeling frustrated because, first you trash one of my very most favorite fictional characters of all time, and on one of the AOL Misty boards, some idiot posted a totally fatuous and callous comment about another my very most favorite characters, Firesong. I could paraphrase his comment (copying his post without his permission would violate netiquette, right?) and we could start a new topic. ---------- On Elspeth: I liked her even more in the Winds books then I did in the earlier books. If I was going be BE someone in one of Misty's stories, I'd be Elspeth, or Di Tregarde -cause then I'd get Andre! Of course, I'd really like to be Silverfox, for reasons I don't need to go into . On Skif: I thought the growth of his character was quite well done, actually, from mischevious kid to emotionally wounded adult. Dealing with horrible situations is one of the occupational hazards of being a Herald, and it does tend to make one grow up real fast. However, I did not buy the whole bit with his being infatuated with Elspeth- I thought this was one of those instances where Misty should have done another draft. The writing of that plot twist was clumsy, and is probably part of the reason so many people think Elspeth is a bitch. ----------------------------------- The rest of this message has no nutritional content: Moi: >>If the Lilac Fairy is properly contrite and promises not to be malicious anymore will you explain about the correct usage of thee and thou again? I think that people just miss the one genuinely *fun* Velgarth character. He had a kind of unique outlook on life, and Misty squashed it. Now, I don't think Elspeth is a bitch. In fact, I like her in Winds. I just try to disassociate her from the totally different Elspeth we see in Arrows and BTS. Her character took a complete 180. Somewhere in Arrows or BTS, someone mentions that Elspeth was a person who never, ever held a grudge. Then, in Winds, Darkwind mentions that she "treasures" a grudge. Mighty different opinions there, huh? Wish I could rememeber where the first quote was. I just remember that I noticed it on my last round of rereadings. > To the Ladies of the Pink Wand: > Having heard no objections, the Lilac Fairy hereby proclaims that Mat the Cat > in Green is now Elevated to the Pantheon of Objects of Unrequited Love/Lust. > > Mat, here's how it works. And he didn't have an appearance that he wanted people to feel sorry for him. He just didn't want people to get hurt through their relations with him. I am the same way. If something I know or something I do could harm or threaten a friend of mine, I don't include them in whatever it is. And I am the last person who wants sympathy. Sure, sympathy is nice to have, but it isn't something I go after. Nor does it seem something Van goes after, either. And if he really does? I too told them at work that I would be unavailable on the night of the 30th anniversary special. I've always enjoyed the show-it combines fantasy and science fiction with the morals and beliefs that were heralded in shows like 'The Waltons' and 'Happy Days'. Yes, [and I find it sad] people have outgrown them all-I wonder if there's a connection between this fact and the apathy and disassociation nowadays. Yes, some of it is extremely simplistic now-it has been many years since the original series was on-but the same devotion to the same belefs are there. For this-and for the attraction it provides for the writer in me [I, too, like to rewrite or become absorbed into the story-depending on how well the writers have done their job. This is one of the many reasons I enjoy reading Misty, Norton, and others. Strange, but I most enjoy those that take me in-past that writer's instinct and into the characters-forget the critique or the 'love that phrasing'-and get into the story. Now that's a master at work. T. I cant read Donaldson either. I'll try Wylie. But if you like Tolkien stuff, try Dennis McKernian. His first 5 books ( trilogy and duology) were pretty good. Warning tho, they are very much like Tolkein in the sense of they are all action and only the most innocent of sexual relationships. His later books, however, get pretty hot and heated! All of them are about some really great elves and about creatures alot like hobbits. Worth the read. -------------------------------- Dyana said: >I've seem a lot of story line hopefuls lately, but what I've always been >curious about is those countries that appear on the maps and maybe get >mentioned twice. Well, I've had tons of cat, and each one has their own personality. Most of my cats have been great, though I did have one that had a habit of trying to jump through the window and kept knocking herself out. My in-laws had a cat that hissed at EVERYTHING. The walls, the door, the floor, the TV, etc. We always thought it was due to the trama of having her claws removed. Cats are kinda like people. Some people are happy and some arent. Besides, cats can have a bad day too! Ok, thats it for me! Wind to thy wings! I am not sure which #1 you are asking about. Snyder wrote Soulstring before she wrote the "Queen's Quarter Knot" series. It was brill! So was the first book of Queen's Quarter Knot. I love Eddings! As for Wurts, I loved her co-authored books with Feist (who is also one of my faves) and I liked "Sorceror's Legacy." I was unable to finish the first book in the MistWraith series and have no intention of trying the others. > Has anybody else read Nina Kiriki Hoffman? "Silent Strength of Stones" was also great. BTW, check out "Ordinary Magic" by Anne Hoffman. I would swear that she is the same person; the style is startlingly similar. Are you sure that you are confusing The Fionavar Tapestry with Misty (Ack! *mind reels at the very suggestion*)? The High Kingdom of Brennan was the main venue in Fionavar. Betcha don't know, betcha, betcha! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Right, I trawled through the 2nd and 3rd Magic books at the weekend, looking for some textevd, so feel well placed to join in on the "Was- Van-a whiney-brat-or-not" debate. Not really, altho' I do get a bit cheesed off with him at times. I *know* he's had a rotten time, but ye gods, he's not the only one. What I *did* like was ML's portrayal of him at the beginning of Magic 3, as some aloof, powerful, stunning being, who has powers most only dream of, who is totally drop dead gorgeous - but equally unattainable. Imagine the aura of power he must have had, the kudos from being noticed or approached by him. ML did that bit very well. I also have some sympathy with him - at the grand old age of 37, oops, make that 38, if (dream on EE!) I had been approached by some starry eyed lad of 17 when I was 33, I would have strongly fought any attraction, and accused said lad of hero worship (I did say this was hypothetical!). I would have been deeply suspicious of his motives, and assumed that if anything did happen, it would be very shortlived. Now, my man is 14 years my senior, and I didn't notice him trying that hard to beat me off when I was 24 and he was 38 - so , so what, EE? I had a point here when I started, it seems to have slithered of somewhere, along with my typing skills - be very glad you don't get to see my uncorrected mails! (Okay fellow Brits - who the devil said "Be afraid. Be very afraid"?) My textevd - someone last week asked who had seen a companion as a young girl. I was sure it was Van seeing 'Fandes, but despite my trawl, couldn't find what I thought I remembered. What I did find was: "...and Vanyel had, for one moment, a disconcerting double-vision of the prancing Companion and an equally mishievous young woman of about Tylendel's age, laughing soundlessly at her Chosen." The Companion here is Gala. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- As to whether Van has Healing - he obviously does, it's mentioned often enough, but, reading from Magic 1, it says: "Vantel had them all. Each channel she tested - with the sole exception of Healing - was open; most of them had been forced open to their widest extent." So *then*, he didn't have it, seems he acquired it somewheres along the way. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Mat, re "topping" - sorry, I forgot, honest I did. Didn't mean to cause trans- Atlantic double takes, not to mention pauses to ponder just ........ as I said, I'll *try* and remember! ;> =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Greensleeves - just to add to the plot - I was taught that not only did our 'Enery VIII write it for Ann Boleyn, it was because she (a) wore green a lot, 'cos it suited her, and (b) wore long sleeves that covered her hands because she had a sixth digit on one hand, and wanted to keep it covered. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- One itsy bitsy little thought that crossed my mind yesterday while reading - Van's son Brightstar (or whatever) has a large owl as a bond bird - maybe the new book, Owlflight (or whatever) is going to be about him. There's his sister don't forget - she might not have been a mage, but she carried the potential. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Korendil said (among maaany other things) > he goes over it time and again to the point you wanna skip over those > sections as muchyou want to the rape. Hear hear. I chose not to re-read that part of Magic 3. I do not like ML's habit of using rape - Talia, Van, Tarma, Idra, Nyara - I know it happens, but it is not something that needs to be described, especially to the extent it is in the Van scene. There's too many find the *idea* of rape/violence/ force/power exciting and stimulating. There's a daily "newpaper" in the UK that revels in the "Busty Brunette Beauty's horror ordeal" type of journalism. The problem here is not just the way women are portrayed, but that this paper is more widely read than any of the quality newspapers. Rape is not something to joke about, make fun of, make movies or plays about, and not something to trivialise into fantasy fiction plots. It's degrading, debasing, wrong, cruel, horrifying ........................ sorry, bad day, wrong topic.
