That was probably around sixth grade (I think...). I am now less than a month away from my nineteenth b-day. I am a Roman Catholic who tries to know at least the basics about other religions so I don't do something really rude (like offer pork to a Jew or Muslim). I go to college at the University of Dayton and I major in electrical engineering. I grew up in the Hershey/Harrisburg area of PA and think that it is really strange to delay school for fog like they do around here. What they call heavy fog is what I call a normal day, but I hated the pennsylvania weather and I like the weather here. On topic, did anyone else who bought STORM BREAKING have a fit over what Misty did in that book (I spent almost as much time swearing at the book as I did reading it)? I don't want to put in any spoilers so I'm going to stop there. Okay it seems that one topic oof disscussion is how Vanyel treated Stef. Yeah sure it wasn't very nice how Vanyel treated Stef but I have to agree with (oh please let me get these names right - darn it Mishi learn to answer the e-mails before you clear out your inbox)Danya and Wintershard?. Vanyel was in a way acting that way orginally because he didn't want to take advantage of Stef. He thougth that Stef was only infatuated with him because of his status. Now later in the book I think that Vanyel was trying to push Stef away so he would not get hurt. Stef must really have been understanding and patient to not have left Vanyel. I think I understand what was going on but I can't say that I could have put up with it. Like Cenny I think I would have walked but not before I gave as good as I got. Not only is Mishi overbubbly she can also get overbitchy - one of my faults, i don't do anything in a small way. I've tried and tried to read > Mistwraith, but I just can't get through it. Yeah, it's not her best - she waffles a little. For a stunning [co-authored] series of hers, try Daughter/Servant/Mistress of the Empire, co-authored with Raymond E. Feist. (And for a change, the combination of them writing together works a lot better than either of them writing on their own). Wurts' Stormwarden series is a lot better, IMHO. I like Eddings' Belgariad/Mallorean a lot as well. The characters are old friends and the reuse of plots is at least covered by his in-book explanation; besides which, he runs variations on the all the subtle details in between. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Rereading Children of the Night: - Did anyone notice that Morrie (Di's Agent) was mentioned by someone as being their agent at the party/drug scene early in the book? - Who was the chap who smiled at Dave when he left the Logres bar late in the book (the other owner of the Logres, obviously, and possibly a Guardian, but who -was- he and why did his smile have such an effect?). - Now in Jinx High, Di doesn't appear any/much older than college, but she's obviously not a vamp because she's prancing about in daylight.. Is there any legendary foundation for regularly donating blood to a vampire, keeping you young? (I can't recall any offhand, but something's nagging me about that idea). - Half-way through, Di says something to the effect that Len & Keith are both strongly psi, and she & Len both have premonitions/hunches that the four of them are going to be needed to take care of the threat, but when it comes to the denouement, both Len & Keith are pretty much so much cannon-fodder - more a liability than a help.. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Re Talia and Arrows: Jacquelle wrote: >Was anyone able to find the reference in AFall where, I think, Kris >pulled Talia up in front of him as they tried to escape on Tantris >and then they galloped into a hail of arrows--yet Kris' body shielded >Talia from being mortally wounded. Talia was in front. Apart from Hollywood, when you're on a horse in full gallop, through dangerous terrain (normally tree branches, in this case arrows), you crouch/lean forward down over the horse's neck/mane, putting you below branch level and lowering your centre of gravity (meaning you keep your balance better & are less likely to be thrown) and wind-resistance. Hence Kris would have been almost leaning over on top of Talia with his arms around her. If you check the text, I think you'll find Kris doesn't take an arrow through the front of his chest - only sides, back & arms, because he's crouching almost flat. Funny - it hadn't occurred to me that people could be confused by it before. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Esmeralda wrote: > Hear hear. It's > degrading, debasing, wrong, cruel, horrifying ........................ > sorry, bad day, wrong topic. Well actually, I didn't think that Misty trivialized it, any more than she trivialized murder or death or any other anguish. In fact I'd go so far as to say that she treats it a damn sight better than most other forms of media. Talia suffers the after-effects - she's uneasy and uncomfortable with even Dirk touching her - and requires R---'s (the other mind-healer's) help to get over it while Dirk is away for a few weeks. (Note that I thought the avoidance of the "Big strong proper man comes along and coaxes poor little victim back to normality" resolution was admirable - far too many movies and books fall into that quick way out). Van? Van's rape wasn't trivial and it wasn't dealt with as such - it was the final thing in a series of calculated moves to break him. And he didn't get over it easily, it took time and security and love and care from Stef. Didn't matter how powerful he was, or how good or noble, bad things still happened. Tarma? Tarma's dealt with it the other way - she found her bond with the Goddess - she divorces herself from the whole sex=intimacy association, to the extent that she can deal with it in the same way she'd deal with a brutal assault. Idra? We don't see all that much of in person, we see her shade and we see a proud, strong woman who wasn't broken by her treatment but returns to exact vengeance within the metaphysical law of the land. Another valid treatment. Nyara? Nyara is the fluid one, the one who doesn't confront the problems head on. She's been abused so many times that she's learnt to be like water - to let it roll over her, to accept the past as not-her-fault and move on. She's been worn down to a single thread and it takes much time and patience and outside help to start to restore that shattered sense of self. The message being, of course, that it wasn't her fault, that she did have worth and abilities and capacity to love, and that there was no shame in needing outside help to fully escape the situation. Call me short-sighted or blind, but I don't see that any of those -distinctly different- treatments, trivialize the matter. They all have valid messages; and they all leave the reader more aware that it can happen, more aware of the different problems a victim might face or how they might be helped onto the road to recovery. Sorry if that seems lecturing, but that phrase "trivialize into fantasy fiction plots" made me see red - the implication that fantasy fiction can't deal with serious issues, deserves to be challenged, even when it's possibly made unconsciously. More than a few of the Sword & Sorceress books, and indeed female characters in fantasy books, raised issues regarding rape, female liberation and female integrity. More than that, the S&S series and authors like Misty and MZB, have made a point of looking beyond the stereotyped stories of "woman succeeds in a male-dominated society" or "woman is raped and takes revenge on men generally". To say that such issues are trivialized by the fantasy genre, is IMNSHO (*) unfair, untrue and an indication that perhaps we're not reading the genre at the same level. Well I first exploded on the list a year ago, defending Misty dealing with violence & rape, so I guess it's fitting that I should touch on it occasionally. :) Cheers, Kerry. I don't subscribe to the "There is one & only one soul-mate for you" school of thought - to me it implies an awfully small soul, that has only the capacity to love/bond with one person. Remember also, that comment, "I knew when I Chose you that it would come to this." - her foresight kicked in when she Chose Van, not before - it may well be that she didn't even know that Van was coming, just that she hadn't met the right one. Heck, you can ask single people in the real world the same question about relationships - do you wait on the off-chance you'll find someone exactly right? Do you eventually give up and choose someone you like and get along with and are friends with, but don't have a burning love for? Or do you wait and die forlorn and alone as life passes you by? (And if you have an answer for these, by all means fill me in - it'd be kinda helpful right now). Icewolf - remember when you said you wanted re love, a sign "This is the one" written in lightning across the sky? I think I agree. :) Matt wrote: (A long time ago): > This whole thing about whether or not mage-gift fades or can be > blocked has been bugging me. Yet we have Darkwind's mage-gift fading, > and Shin'a'in shaman are able to block it. What gives? Starwind may have been exaggerating a little bit because of those Tayledras ethics - the old "a gift is double-edged, a promise to you and a pledge of duty from you." But, it's also possible that the difference is that Darkwind was -trained-. Darkwind knows how -not- to use his gift, he has sufficient control over it to block it and just use the shielding component. There's also the possibility that the Shaman have learned how to block it since Van's days (or that there was no Shaman within umpteen leages of Van). Or perhaps Van's gift was just too damn strong and wild and untamed, to fade away if unused. I'm a little like that, though the scary part is I flat on my own - my folks still ring me up giving me advice on how to steam vegetables & I think they'd probably do food-drops (the way a military does) every second day, if they didn't live 1000km away. :) HTH also wrote another of those infamous articles defending Van, to which my only response is a hearty "Yeah. What she said. Doubled." (but don't worry Heather, I'll forgive you for it this time. *grin*). Re GGK & Fionvar: I've finally got around to reading _The Fionvar Tapestry_ (and there were many thuds, as of many people falling off chairs) and so far I pretty much like it. Certainly it's one of the few books I've read lately that got me misty-eyed (though that could be a function of the weekend I had). The only complaint I have so far (I think I've got a chapter to read left - dratted trains don't quite take long enough), is that the reference to Lios alfar going across the sea, to a land of eternal song was just a little too heavy-handedly a Tolkein derivative for me to let it past. I know, Fionvar is supposed to be the first world which all others echo etc, but somehow it just jarred me out of the reverie. Thess: Hey Thess - if you're still here - have you done any unarmed fighting against properly held knives (ie hilt in the hand and blade along the inside of the forearm) in your martial arts? We're doing more knife defences in hapkido and I'd like to actually practice something useful against someone who -does- know how to use a knife. (If I hear "Most people don't know how to use a knife properly" one more time...). Okay, enough from me. Cheers, Kerry.
