One possibility: the map of the land was already laid out-at least part way. This is true for a number of the stories I have written-I created the world in my imagination as a child. When I started writing stories, particularly those in the fantasy genre-it seemed natural they should take place in 'my world' [as the teachers called it-they always tried to keep me out of it!]. Anyway, I not only have much of the land, countries, and towns laid out; I also have much of the history of the land, its people and their beliefs. It helps to me to understand the characters. I think I know some of them pretty well-of course, I could be wrong. [I'm knee-deep in a story-and the main character is one I had thought to be a 'minor' player in this 'world'. Sorry to be long-winded. Here's a thought-I know I have many stories yet untouched-wonder how many Misty has in hiding-or should I say waiting? Message-ID: <9610221239.AA07336-+AT+-isou10.estec.esa.nl> hola, I made some statements about rape that Kerry responded to - and here is my response to Kerry - bear with me on this - I have a gut reaction against the use of rape in fiction, movies, plays - and being of a scientific bent (deliberately picked science to study to avoid the essays and debates), I'm not used to articulating gut feelings. My main response to ML's use of rape is "Here we go again". I'm surprised no-one's been raped in the Storm books - after all, it occurs in Arrows, Magic, Winds, Oaths - why not Storm - surely there's someone suitable. *That's* why I don't like it, and said it was being trivialised into fantasy fiction plots - ML uses it in a such a formulaic fashion - X gets captured by the baddies. X gets raped by the baddies. X escapes (or dies in Idra's case). X recovers. I don't think the rape was used in a calculated way - the guys who raped Van were bored and had a victim they'd been told to capture and keep alive - nothing more. I didn't get the impression that they were acting on orders, Talia's captors probably raped any woman brought in - a perk of the job. Idra's captors again - they had a woman in their power. I am not disputing that ML handles the effects of rape on an individual and their nearest and dearest well - I just wish she could come up with something else. The Van rape scene was seriously unpleasant, it disturbed me, I didn't want to read it, and I shan't again. It didn't inform or challenge, IMO it bordered on the gratuitous. It added nothing to the book that a less graphic description couldn't have. However, this is an emotive subject, we'll probably never agree, so, what the heck, let's agree to disagree. ciao ciao Esmeralda ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Oct 96 14:17:42 +0100 From: dbackhau-+AT+-isou10.estec.esa.nl To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: re: 'Fandes/pearl from the Git/Evalie Message-ID: <9610221317.AA07361-+AT+-isou10.estec.esa.nl> hola, JAIME wrote: > I believe Vanyel had a double image of Fandes when he is teasing her > about meeting the "stallion with the gorgeous--" :Nose. Now, according to Misty herself (in an interview somewhere? yes? Am I getting this right?) Kero and Eldan are NOT lifebonded. Nope, nope! They are both mindspeakers, who miss each other a great deal, so when they're asleep (in other words *in trance*) they can "talk" to each other, the same way Talia followed Ylsa (sp?) But according to Misty, they're not lifebonded. You know, I miss Talia. I really identified with her (quiet, shy, timid and nervous around strangers) and I had a pretty good time going through training with her. Her present calm demeanor and quiet certainty is something that I have always wished for. I'm not desperate for happiness, I just want a little peace, which it seems I will never have. (Maybe I should go in for Kolinahr.) We've gotten little bits here and there about her life...having a child, becoming a priestess of Vkandis, etc. She is one of the few calm and centered characters in Misty's literature that really *works*. I haven't read Storm Breaking yet, so I don't know what Misty says in there, but it seems to me as long as we're compiling a "wish list", another novel about Talia would be in order. It doesn't bother me. It does however, infuriate my roommate, whom I love to tease bout it. ************************************************************************* Could someone please tell me more about the story in horse fantastic that is by Misty. I've read the book repeatedly, but it's-+AT+-home and I'm in Michigan. You can email me privately, but it's really annoying me that can't remember. Of course, I read it before I read much Misty, but still... it only took me two reading to figure out that only one of the stories in a Knot in the Grain(Robin McKinley) wasn't taking place in Damar(Now there's another good world. I would go there if I was given the opportunity.) ************************************************************************ Totally of the subject, but I've noticed a few people from PA, which is where I'm from, and even one from Harrisburg, which is only about 50 miles south of me. How cool. And I have to agree with the person who was commenting on the weather of Pa--Here in Mich, even on bad days the sky is Blue. Of course they do have classes on days when no one in their right mind would go outside, but at least it's not a big campus. And I _DO_ remember for sure (sorry no textved- that when he was talking to Medren about how the armsmaster (what was his name- jervis?) wanted to use him as 'pells' he 'gave' Medren the spots. Something about how he didn't have much healing but he could depress Medren's immune system so that if he spent enough time with Brenden and his spots, then he'd come down with em too. Right? Someone with a book handy can corroborate me on this. ************************************************************************* Does anyone know exactly WHEN the new Pern book is coming out? I can't wait to read it...IT's about the second pass, you say? I wanna know what happens to the dragonriders when there is no more Thread. The Lilac Fairy assumes you have textual evidence for these very strong statements? . Exactly where does Van behave like a major jerk to Stef? When was he cruel and callous just for the pleasure of being nasty? When was he condescending and insulting? Did we read the same book?<<< Well, I suppose I shall have to go look. It is there and I can find it, I just don't want to right now. But for you, ma chere Fee, I will. BTW, I never said that Van was cruel and callous for the pleasure of it! If he had been, I doubt if anyone on this list would have liked him, and I know that I would have a lot worse to say than that I thought he was whiny and a jerk to his boyfriend. >>>Cen, how many times have you read LHM? Are your impressions based on one reading, or have you read the trilogy more than once?<<< I am wounded! Shot through the very heart by one whom I have lavished with my care and utterly fashionable presence! Oh, the humanity! Seriously, I have read LHM at least 5 or 6 times. I have read MPawn more than that because I like that volume the best of the series. Then Erika wrote: >>>For a really funny kick, no pun intended, I was at a dog show, and a woman with a Border Collie walked by while talking to her dog. What did she call the dog? TYLENDEL!!! <<< Ah, but did you not know tht dog shows are the place to find "family" members (and I am not talking about Misty fans!) Then Heather (Thank Havens for her!) wrote: >>>Hey, Cennydd, when mentioning Ordinary Magic by Anne Hoffman, did you in fact mean Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman? 'Cause that one I've read, but I don't know that I've ever heard of the former, title or author.<<< But of course. I am having such a time remembering the Alice part of her name (since I am convinced that she really is Nina Kiriki) and the title just seems to have escaped me. But that is the book. If you have read "The Thread that Binds the Bones," don't you agree that there is a strong similarity in style, etc? >>>Midori Snyder fans, she wrote an excellent book a year or two ago whose title I've -- bloody heck -- forgotten. The something or other of Michael Maguire?<<< Yey! The Flight of Michael McBride! It was great! Yet another incredible blend of NatAm, Old World Faerie, and modern American cultures/cosmologies. Heather, if you like it, read Tom Deitz' books about Davey Sullivan, especially Darkthunder's Way. In response to the recommendations for HA: After some discussion with Kory on IRC, and listening to descriptions, I have decided that I am going to give HA a miss. She just doesn't sound like my cup of tea. Sorry to all you HA worshippers, but I don't like that whole "one voice, one instrument" coffee-house thing (which is what I gather most of her work is). then Lara of Silverwoods asked: >>>Out of curiousity: what's wrong with the lyrics to Misty filk?<<< I don't know how to say this in a nice way, so...they're lame. At least all of the lyrics that have ever made it into the Velgarth books (the OBr appendix, etc.) are just amazingly banal. Maybe I am missing it, but I just don't see any real artistry to them. They are either stories set to music or they are these moralistic "advice" songs. My basic feeling is that Misty is a great writer of prose, but she doesn't really write good poetry. Her poetry is basically the same as her prose and while the style may be great for prose, it falls flat for poetry. Not that this a strong criticism of Misty, per se. It is actually very rare to find a novelist who can also write really high-level good poetry, lyric or otherwise. Tolkien was one. Interestingly, I personally find GGK's poetry a bit lacking also, so Misty is in good company. Of course, maybe part of it is that I love to read good poetry, and one of my requirements of song lyrics is that they be able to stand alone as poetry, and I love to write it. If you have spent forever working on a poem and crafting it so that it works on a multitude of levels and takes full advantage of the density of poetics, then Misty's lyrics are going to seem pretty lame. then Summersong wrote: >>>On Midori Snyder: I can't find book one of Queen's Quarter Knot anywhere. I found book 3 for my bud last Christmas, but it seems like books 1 and 2 are out of print. I've read the trilogy, and it was one of the best I've read. I'd really like to find out where I could get them, if they're still available... BTW, didya know that her first name is probably Japanese? I can't imagine any other language that has that word. And it means "green" in a literal translation. I thought it was kind of cool.<<< Hmmmm. Well, I have both #1 and #2 of the series. I never did bother to get #3, since the series sort of left me under-whelmed. #1 was good, #2 was not good enough to finish when I got distracted. On the other hand, my mom liked both of them. I think that she read Sadar's Keep a couple of times. BTW, I don't know the her background, but you are right that the first name is prob Japanese. However, "midori" does not mean "green." It means "melon" (of the green round variety). "midori iro" is the name for the color green (the clear, pure green). "aoi" is the Japanese word for green and it actually means a range of colors that we (English speakers) would divide into "blue" and "green." Actually, I think we have had this discussion before (about Japanese color terms). Japanese is a classic 5-color system (black, white, red, blue, yellow) and English is a 8-color system (black, white, red, yellow, blue, orange, green, purple). ObMisty (it is time for one, I think): I wonder what kind of color system the Tayledras have, and whether the Shin'a'in and the Kaled'a'in have the same divisions? Then Kerry (oooh! Aussies!) wrote: >>> The only complaint I have so far (I think I've got a chapter to read left - dratted trains don't quite take long enough), is that the reference to Lios alfar going across the sea, to a land of eternal song was just a little too heavy-handedly a Tolkein derivative for me to let it past.<<< Oh, but wait 'til you see what he does with it later in the story! His twist on the "sailing out of the world" element is one of the things that got me crying. And then Esme (the Lady of the Low Countries) wrote: >>>My main response to ML's use of rape is "Here we go again".<<< Interestingly, after S&SI, MZB reports having a similar response. S&SI was characterized by several "rape and revenge" stories. Now, MZB will generally not accept such a story. >>>[a propos of Van's rape, Esme wrote] IMO it bordered on the gratuitous. It added nothing to the book that a less graphic description couldn't have.<<< I tend to agree with you here. I am not sure why Van's rape was so graphically presented and the women-directed ones weren't (I have my suspicions, which I am sure people can guess), but I think it would have been better done to keep Van's as much off-screen (so to speak) as the others had been.
