Just a quick note to point out that Tolkien drew more on the Germanic presence in Britain than the Celtic one. Although, I am sure that the Celtic traditions figure into his work. However, his cosmology is much more clearly related to the Norse myths of the Vanyar and the Alvar (Incidentally, I don't remember the exact terms, but lios alfar and svart alfar are almost direct borrowings from Old Norse.) Remember that he was an English philologist and his specialty was Old English and Norse. On the other hand, I have lived in Oklahoma (Tulsa/Broken Arrow) for so long that I have really come to think of that as "where I am from." And trust me on this: PA weather is a walk in the park compared to Tulsa. At least in PA, no matter how grey and gookily it gets, you don't have to worry much about whether you are going to be killed by a stray tornado (average of 54 tornados a year, mostly concentrated in and around April). ObMisty: You know, despite the fact that Misty is purported to live in OK, her magestorms don't really seem to be that spectacular. It is one of the most disturbing things I read, and I sat there crying, hunched up in a small ball, on my bed saying something like, "no, no, , no," while I read that scene. I think I had to put it down to recover a little afterwards, as well. To this day, I don't like it when somebody mentions something about riding horses in a nasty tone like that. If I had read it, ohhh, about two years earlier, I don't know what kind of person I would be today. But look at the bright side. He had Stefan to help him sort it all out, and I also cried when he crawled into bed to just be held. He made it. He bounced back to himself, and even better. He realized what an obssessive bitch he had been up until that little escapade, and dethawed a bit more. He might not have been a bundle of sunshine, but at least he realized that Stefan was more than just a travelling companion, and needed some care, too. Just to add to the list of all of Misty's rape scenes, there was also that encounter Di had with that serious bad guy that shook her up so badly. It wasn't a rape, but it might as well have been, with the trauma it put her under. love, Deniz Sarikaya, soon-to-be |"Beauty is truth, truth beauty,"--that is all (I hope) Coddess[sic] of |Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know. What I see from everyone's thoughts is that we were all extremely effected by these scenes, especially Vanyel's. I think that is great. Rape is one of the most horrible violations that a person can endure and since none of you are taking this flippantly, congrats! you are much better people than most I have the dubious honor of knowing. My bf was raped twice and now every time I read something that will help bring the truth of this horror home to people I feel a little gratification for her sake. If Misty is able to effect people so much with her writting as to have an entire listing devoted to her work, then maybe she can have some small help in stopping a tragedy that happens way too often. Sorry for the soap-box routine but I feel a need to vent myself sometimes. Another one! (Raindancer jumps for joy at finding another B5 freak!) And I see it on thursday too. some friends on the John/delenn list have too wait till Sunday while some lucky SOBs get it on Monday. Well, welcome to the list, judging from your interests you'll fit in well. But watch out for the weirdos (Moi? Weird? Never!) and the flying tackle hugs, they can be bruising. Let's not go there. However, I want to know if anyone thinks Kero and Eldan are lifebonded? Their relationship was a bit out of the ordinary. When they're in the cave, doesn't Eldan feel something like a shock (you know, the kind experienced by Talis-Dirk and later by Selenay-Deren)? Just wondering. Nina (ducking quickly to avoid being hit by possibly thrown objects for posting something that has most likely been overdone) I'd like to go there. I don't think Elspeth and Darkwind are lifebonded, although Firesong seems to hint at that. There just didn't seem to be any "shock" when they met. I think there's just tremendous love and respect, which is just fine for a lifepairing. HOWEVER - I do think Eldon and Kero are lifebonded. I happen to really like their relationship. Weird I know, but I think this dreamscape stuff is really cool. Kind of like a real-fantasy. I would like to read more about Kero and Eldon and what happens with the Skybolts. I think my favorite book of the entire Velgarth series is BTS. SO many of my favorite characters are part of the plot and I like to see how she brings all the countries together. Eldon and Kero are I belive lifebonded because of the strength of their tie to last for years and through great distances. And frankly, if I can be so bold, I'm not worried if this has been posted to death. It hasn't since I've been on the list and with the number of "I'm a Newbie" posts, I think we can talk about almost anything. If you've been there, done that to death, just delete. Welcome thoughts about Eldon/Kero Thanks Val ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Oct 1996 19:27:57 -0700 (PDT) From: Elizabeth Angell To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Missing talia /the Last Unicorn/the Corrs Message-ID: > > You know, I miss Talia. She's my favorite too, and I miss her. I'm hoping desperately that there will be some stories about her in The anthology coming out. I'm suffering, none of my favorites were really in SB much. I'd also like to see something focusing on Selenay, I liked her so much in Arrows and then we see so little of her in the past few books :-( Oh, whoever was looking for the music from THe Last Unicorn, well, that Kenny Loggins tape someone else mentioed, "Return to Pooh Corner" has the song the Last Unicorn on it, and it is the song from the movie. I found out that my littlest sister had just gotten a copy and , um, borrowed the tape. I love that song. BTW, does anyone else like The Corrs? They're a newish Irish group that play a cool mix of trad. & Celtic-influenced soft rock. To: Subject: Talia/Tolkien/lifebonds Message-ID: <22OCT96.23527389.0076.MUSIC-+AT+-ACADEMIC.TRUMAN.EDU> I agree that Talia is the calm, centered character in Valdemar, which is why I don't particularly want another book about her. She was great when she was young and confused, but now I think she's a little too perfect to make an interesting main character. If Talia is a major player in future books, I hope she becomes a little less Serene and Capable. Tolkien did draw a lot of his mythology from Teutonic sources, but he was also more than familiar with Celtic sources, especially when it came to his elves. The elven language was based on Welsh, in fact, so there was probably some connection in his mind between the Middle Earth elves and the Celtic sidhe. Hello! Nyara and Skif were lovebonded, but Vanyel and Stef were DEFINITELY lifebonded. I promise. Look it up in the scene after their first night together, after Vanyel wakes up from his dream about Tylendel. Hmm, skirting the edges of the rape issue, I'd say that she does use it an awful lot, and I'm sure it's related to this idea Misty seems to have that powerful people cannot be both ethical and sexual at the same time. Everyone who has power in her books is either very asexual or a sexual predator. I'm kinda glad in Tiger Burning Bright that the major bad guy wants to capture the princess, but he has zero interest in her sexually. As my she'enedra mentions, Misty has a habit of making her bad guys of exactly the right sexual orientation to want the main character (Ancar/Elspeth, Krebain/Leareth/Vanyel, Thalkharsh/T&K, Falconsbane/everyone), as if we won't believe he's REALLY bad unless he threatens to rape someone. As for Vanyel's rape, maybe it should have been less graphic, I don't know. But I am kind of glad it was in there, just because so few people ever deal with the fact that men get raped, too -- which makes life exceedingly difficult for men who *are* raped and don't have the resources and the support structure that women have spent thirty years building for each other. It's a real temptation for men to believe that a) this never happens to other men and b) if they were really strong and manly, it wouldn't have happened to them. I liked it that Misty acknowledged first of all that it does happen, and second that it happens even to very strong and capable people sometimes -- it's hardly a sign of weakness if it can happen to the man who could bring Haven down around his ears by thinking hard.
