If they ask a question that's been done before, we need *one* person to kindly reply and say that the topic has been done to death. Any newbies can persue it privately, or drop it after that. If we have a sudden flood of newbies, and there are some new ideas and points coming into it, let it be. If they're re-hashing what has been said, then whoever knows the answer can tell them. It's that simple. I don't want to see our list torn apart over a question. Also, don't flame them right away. When Windshadow, my sis, got here, we had recently decided on something. I don't recall what it was. In her first post she violated that, without knowing it, and before I could warn her, she became a member of the drifting ashes club. We were all newbies once, just remember that. On the tarot discussion: Cennydd, I agree with that completely. Congrats! For all who are wondering about who should be Death, I thought it was obvious. Arrow's is the only tril in there, and that's actually fine. Winds of Fury is in the Fiction spot. Katherine Kurtz's Deryni series is in YA, and there's some other stuff in there too. Sheri Tepper's Grass, which I haven't read. I think that might be something that should be moved. A lot of the stuff in the YA section is extremely fluffy, including R.L.Stine, which I used to read. Blech. Very predictable. You just pick the person who seems to be the most innocent. Ususally the only good reads on that shelf are the ones with the sci-fi/fantasy sticker on them. I know, I looked. I don't know if I dare post it with all the comments about posting already beaten-to-death questions, but I haven't seen this touched on, so here goes. (fingers crossed): Sherril (I think) says to Talia in AoQ that most Companions will tell you their names when they Choose you (ok, it was Teren during orientation, I rem'ber now), but that some will let you give them a name, except for MOC, which always gives his name. Has there been any case in Valdemar where a Chosen named their Companion? I don't remember it, but I always thought that Sherril might be one of those, as Silkswift seems a little odd for the name of a reincarnated Herald. Two more questions...1. The whole bar and all the people in it were lifted from another book, which, unfortunately, I cannot remember what it was. But I do remember when I first read CotN, thinking "oh, yeah, Logre's, that was that bar that all the magically inclined people of New York hang out at." I don't even remember who first wrote about the bar, but duing the late 60s and early 70s several authors used this bar. It was shielded to the teeth and only those people who needed to find it or were powerful enough could find it. The normal, everyday person simply failed to notice that it was there at all. It was a refuge and haven for the "good guys" where the could relax and not have to worry about hiding their abilities. It was a sort of club for magic and pyschic protectors. Misty, apparantly, also borrowed the "Guardian" concept from this source, because her concept of "Guardian" was the same as the creator of Logre's concept. In one story, if this helps anyone to remember the book(s), the was a very good description of a mage duel that took place in Logres. Sorry I can't remember the books, but hopefully someone with a better memory than me can provide names of authors & titles of books. IIRC, it was a "Shared Bar" similar to "Thieve's World". You could use other author's characters, but you couldn't make significant changes to them, i.e., kill them off, maim them, etc. Mainly to be used as support characters that you didn't have to create from scratch. ******************************* Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens wrote a book called _The Adventures of Galen Sword: #1 Shifter_ that came out about the same time as CotN. She basically had a large part in starting Gothic Fiction which in turn led to science fiction. Wrote a term paper on nearly the same subject last year. --------- I absolutely love the characterizaton of women in Misty's novels. They are strong and self-reliant. In general, they can live life perfectly fine without sex entering their lives (i wish i could say the same;) Before I knew of Misty's work, the only female role models I knew were the simpering idiots who threw themselves at anything male. Why does a woman have to sleep with men in novels in order to be considered feminin? IMHO, Kero was quite a woman in her own right before she ever met Eldan and she still is because she has the ability to seperate her life from her love. With all her responsibilities of being a Herald with the Companion bond that goes with it and a merc Captain with the bond to her people it's no wonder she and Eldan didn't lifebond, her life is too full for her to give a lifebond the attention it needs. But does this make her any less feminin? I don't think so because being a woman does not have anything to do with using sex as a tool not to mention as a weapon. --------- I thought it mentined somewhere in the end of MPrice that Learth was Krebain. To: Subject: Tarot/Kethry/CotN/Wicked Message-ID: <23OCT96.23188193.0045.MUSIC-+AT+-ACADEMIC.TRUMAN.EDU> I can't throw myself into the Tarot effort, because I spent many many hours designing a Tarot deck based on my own Series In Progress, and it burned me out on this line of thought. I went through many interpretations, examined billions of shades of meaning, etc. etc., and I have no energy to do it all over again Just a few thoughts, then. Cen has some good ideas; the only one that made me frown was Savil as the High Priestess. The High Priestess represents a very emotional, spiritual energy that I never saw in Savil, who was more practical, more physical. I'd be inclined to say Talia as High Priestess -- lots of yin/"female" energy, deeply intuitive, obviously spiritual, as she takes her Sunpriest position so seriously. And wherein is the Shadow Lover not a good representation of major change? Death, whether as a concept or a personification, is an excellent symbol of transformation. That's, um, why it's on the Tarot card. I liked Kethry well enough, but she's a little bit, well, forgettable, I guess. A nice person, a good person, but she didn't engender any particular response in me. Not nearly as interesting as Tarma, IMHO. Tarma had style. But Warrl got all the good lines, dammit. Okay, it's been a while since I read Children of the Night, but I recall Len and Keith being fairly important. True, they weren't Merlin and Gandalf, but I think Diana would have been seriously strapped without the extra help they provided. And whom else could she have asked? I think she *did* need them to defeat the menace. As for things like the guy in the bar, my guess is this: most writers, when they create a world, especially for a series of books, have lots of minor characters that they know well, some of whom become important, some of whom don't. She may have intended to use that guy in the future, or just thought he was a cool character and wanted to throw him in somewhere. Undine, I'm still not sure whether I agree with you or not about Wicked. I loved the first, oh, two-thirds or so: her childhood, the years at Shiz University (those in particular), the time in the resistance movement. Everything up through Fiyero's death I thought was terrific. After that, I thought it totally ran out of steam and went nowhere. So much was left unresolved, especially Glinda, who was such an interesting character. Maguire never fully explained her motivations for siding with the Wizard against Munchkinland. Nor did Animal Rights, the cause that Elphaba lost everything for, ever really come up again after she left Emerald City. What's that all about? I was horribly disappointed by the whole last section, but I think I enjoyed the previous parts so much that it was almost worth it. To: Subject: FAQ/women Message-ID: <23OCT96.23709504.0045.MUSIC-+AT+-ACADEMIC.TRUMAN.EDU> S-s-sorry, I didn't know there was a FAQ already. This changes my argument a lot. Okay, now I officially give everyone permission to snipe at newbies who bring up topics *that are listed as old topics in the FAQ.* That you should know (ignoring, briefly, the fact that I didn't. I don't know what that's all about). See, what bothers me is that these women are always too busy for close relationships. In a moment of crisis, I understand, but Kerowyn was not consistently in crisis for her entire mercenary career. She just puts her career first at all times. That may be what Misty means by "strong and independant," but it's not what I mean, and it's certainly not what I aspire to. One of the best Filk Experiences I ever had (right up there with singing "Kerowyn's Ride," accompanied by Leslie Fish on guitar, thankyou) was the first time I heard "Women of Steel" on the By the Sword CD. It really brought out the tragedy, for me, of Kerowyn's whole life (up to the time she got a Companion and everything became peaches, anyway) -- of what happens to a person internally when she isolates herself and has nothing and no one except work, when she begins to value the idea of strength and independance over simple human comforts like friendship and home and love. Frankly, I like the character of Kerowyn a lot, for just that reason. I wish it hadn't been resolved so simplistically -- just throw her a man and a Companion, and everything changes; she never seems to find the idea of being in a serious, intimate relationship or of being soulbound to a complete stranger a little freaky or hard to deal with. I think in real life it might be a little harder than that to change your whole life and the way you relate to people. But up until that point, I think her flaws make her fascinating. You know, traditionally, in this culture, it's been expected that men will be primarily providers, with the greatest part of their loyalty and energy directed into their jobs, and only the leftovers toward their families and relationships. The reverse has been true of women. Now it seems like, instead of striking some kind of healthy balance between the two, Misty has shoved her female characters part and parcel into that extremely unhealthy Male Role, just to get them out of the equally unhealthy Female Role. I cling doggedly to the idea that there has to be a better way. Why should a person, male or female, have to wait until they're not busy and things are routine before connecting with other people? Why should a person's inner life always take second place to the outer life, put on hold indefinitely at every turn and made to wait until there are no outside demands left? What a bleak way to live. And I think an awful lot of Misty's characters have kind of bleak lives. I guess it's dramatic and all, but I don't plan to model my own life after the same pattern. In WoC (or is it WoFate?), Falconsbane remebers lots of his old incarnations, which included Leareth. > BOTH be him because Leareth says he has been working on his plans since > before Elspeth's (the peacemaker's) birth and Krebain (see even his > name fits better Kre-the sound of a hawk and bain-bane) was killed > during Vanyel's life time. Ok, now that's really weak evidence. Firstly, the name he chose on rebirth was Mornelithe, which, according to Treyvan meand "evil which returnsssss" (over centuries). The Falconsbane moniker he decided on when he had Starblade captive. > Okay, dumb newbie confession...I thought the FAQs were about > the list, not about what was ON the list (sheepish grin), I > have duly requested them and do hereby promise > that I will not ask any questions that are on them unless > I can be tittlatingly new. Leareth was Falconsbane. When An'Desha was going through Falconsbane's memories in SW, (I wish I had my book in front of me) An'desha finds a brief memory of Leareth. There wasn't much mentioned about and I wished that there was greater detail than just that line. -Daelon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Oct 1996 23:55:48 -0700 From: Daelon To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: target age Message-ID: <2.2.32.19961024065548.00685528-+AT+-odin.cmp.ilstu.edu> At 04:50 AM 10/24/96 +0100, you wrote: >About target age for Misty books: >I found an old SFBC catalog (from b/f I was forced to quit the club due to >an unfortunate misunderstanding b/t me and the shipping department over a >change of adress) that contained the Misty books. But I've been at college for the last couple of months. Actually, I thought that LHM had less adult content than most of her other books except the Storm trilogy. I guess that the "For Mature Readers" was the SFBC's subtle way of saying that it was okay for men and women to have sex, but if two men are having sex we must put a warning on it. I don't care. I still liked LHM the best. -Daelon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Oct 1996 01:28:33 -0400 (EDT) From: Alice Pinard To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: new+odd thought Message-ID: Well, gave up on trying to see if you guys had mentioned this in the archives so I figured I'd jump right in and say something :) (btw, hi, I'm Alice :) Well I just got done reading storm warning/rising/breaking a few weeks ago and was listening to the heralds, harpers and havoc tape when I got hit between the eyes. Wouldn't want children to find out about that kind of thing, would you? Actually, I giggle happily every time I see Misty shelved in the Young Adult section. Maybe young people will accidentally stumble across something good while they're trying to find a new "My boyfriend left me for a cheerleader" book. Okay, delete now unless you're one of those weirdos who seem to like listening to me rage and growl and knock over the china. Why is it so desirable to be able to live perfectly contentedly without the "opposite sex" (or whatever sex it is that you go in for)? I'd pine away and die without women -- and I'm talking for many reasons here, love and sex and friendship alike. Is that so wretchedly wrong? YES, they complete my life. NO, my life is not just as good when I'm home alone all the time. Frankly, I think this is healthy. Yfandes said it to Vanyel: humans need contact -- not just sex, but warmth and intimacy and touching. Without it, we lose something. That said, I think it's wrong to view these things as the only important things in life. *That* said, I think it's equally wrong to view them as without value, or just a little frill to be tacked on to the end of life like a postscript. Some of Misty's "romantic subplots" strike me as obnoxious, because they're so backhanded. Kethry and Jadrek come to mind, as well as Kero and Eldan, and Karal and Natoli. I don't find them particularly romantic, because half the time no one seems to much care one way or the other. Love is not *supposed* to be just a diversion, just something that shows up one morning and stays forever. I've never known anyone who fell in love and felt it as anything other than a profound event that changed the very fabric of their life. Nor have I ever met anyone who didn't have to work hard to preserve it, as Misty characters never do. It's like a prize they get for completing the book. Experience points, and a +2 vorpal boyfriend. Look, I care about love. I want to be in love someday, and in the meantime, I want to experience the other varieties of love that are currently in my life, and maybe have a bit of fun, too. These are things that are important to me, and I think deservedly so. If you think that means that I'm not strong and independant like a Misty character -- pffft, you are so wrong. I am both, and more. I have a heck of a lot of trouble relating to characters who have less sex drive than Vaneyl's Companion and never have 3-in-the-morning discussions with their friends about whether or not the current relationship is going anywhere. They don't really reflect my actual life or my ideal one. I know there are people who have very low sex drives, and people who live very happily without romantic relationships. But I know more who don't fit that pattern, and I don't think they're any less admirable than my friends and I are. Maybe I'm still bitter because Misty has Stef, one of the few really sexy, sensual characters in Valdemar, whimpering out a shamed apology for having been sexually active. My coffee table may still have dents from how hard I slammed the book against its edge, and how many times. Believe you me, neither my male characters nor my female characters feel the need to apologize for what they do with their own bodies. Nor do I. Nor do I aspire to.
