You are, of course, quite right. I am basing my choices on my readings of my Tarot deck (the Ukiyo-e Tarot). However, I also tried to take into account the fact that there are other interpretations (not as specific as mine) which are used in other systems and decks. However, as an amateur student of the Tarot, I am also aware that each of the cards has a common, general interpretation that is used in all of the standard decks. So, I have based my choices on those commonalities (with a few of my own biases thrown in, of course). > Queen's Own. It also talks about leadership potential that needs to be > utilized, women in power, and female rulership. Hmmmm. This seems to me to be more appropriate as an interpretation of the Empress. In most of the decks that I have a familiarity with, one of the key differences between the High Priestess and the Empress is the overtness of the power. The High Priestess is about hidden strength, and spiritual things, rather than overt power or rulership. I am not saying that Talia would not be a good choice, I just think that Savil might be a better one. Still, I vastly prefer Talia to Solaris! [snip about the fool] Heather, I have to say that I completely disagree with your reading of the Fool. Well, no, I don't *completely* disagree with it, since I agree that, like all the Major Arcana, it represents qualities and situations, rather than actual people (for the most part). However, in almost every deck I have ever used or studied, the Fool represents a lack of guiding wisdom or restraint, whence his folly. The interpretation of change is only a secondary implication. Your reading struck me as more appropriate for Death, which represents abrupt and decisive change (the end of one life-sitch and the beginning of another). Given this, I don't think that Van is the optimal choice. He works much better as the Mage, both for the overt symbology, and also for the implications. His reaction to Savil's death is the perfect example of the qualities of the Mage when he is differenced in the layout. Oh, well, to each his own, says I. I likes mine raw! =) BTW, a propos of this Tarot discussion, if anyone has a copy of my first Tarot casting, could you send me a copy. Our ever so eloquent Heather said: >> You know, traditionally, in this culture, it's been expected that men will be primarily providers, with the greatest part of their loyalty and energy directed into their jobs, and only the leftovers toward their families and relationships. The reverse has been true of women. Now it seems like, instead of striking some kind of healthy balance between the two, Misty has shoved her female characters part and parcel into that extremely unhealthy Male Role, just to get them out of the equally unhealthy Female Role.<< I think that's exactly the point Misty's trying to make. She looks around at the world, and sees something that she finds discriminatory and wants to change it -- if it changes just one reader's opinion, it's worth it. I see two tacks to try for this course -- 1) Show them the complete opposite. While this is more obvious, shocking, and practically reverts to reverse discrimination (switching females into male roles *and* switching males into the disadvantaged female roles), it also makes the reader sit up and take notice of the problem, and see that there are alternatives. 2) Subtly break the stereotyped molds without forcing characters into the oppposite mold -- find the "happy medium." (what Heather suggested) This is definately the harder of the two (not that i don't think Misty could do it, just that it would be a ton of a lot harder) to pull off. Looking around you, do you see any society where you can already see this at work? If you do, I wanna know, 'cause I haven't. Because we don't have such an example of a happily thriving peoples meshing with reality and not fitting into the stereotyped molds or their opposites, it's a hell of a lot harder to imagine. IMESHO, you'd have to have a deep knowledge of philosophy *and* psychology to pull a stunt like this off. Anyone willing to try it? Please point me in your direction, I'm interested in seeing how it works out. Anyone have examples of people who have succeeded at it? Once again, show me the way. 3) In order to conceive of the middle ground, you have to know what the extremes are, no? There. I feel better, now. I've added my $.02, and will drop the subject unless I absolutely have to defend myself. ```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` Cennydd, Our Green Striped Magic Person Who Doesn't Like Noise, said: >>Um. I can think of one. In one of the S&S anthologies Misty has a story called "The Making of a Legend". Basically it is the story behind the song "The Leslac Version" in the back of Oathbreakers. I don't know which one came first, and all my books are at home... My gut instinct says she probably wrote the story fairly quickly because it isn't as polished as a lot of the others in MZB's anthologies. It's not that it's BAD, it is just not really good either. The song IS very funny if you read it as a poem and it feels more polished. So I think (however they were published) that she had the outline of what happened written, and probably a draft of the poem as well and she wrote the story quickly to clarify things. Then she would've gone back to the poem and polished it further (IF she was writing the way I do). Can anyone else think of other examples? Now for the apology. I hope she'll take care of it in Owlflight! The problem isn't so much that there's no magic, it is that the magic is really different, sort of a haze everywhere. That way (in my often-misguided understanding), the Wen should still be intact. And, while there aren't any nodes left for awhile, can't the Companions use the energy from ley lines for speed and endurance? The books I have read from Valdemar don't seem to have very much, especially between friends. I may simply have not remembered them, they may have simply escaped my notice, but that's the way I remember them. It also has forced me to think about just what the people are TEACHING our kids in school, a thought that now has me seriously frightened. I'm really not sure I want my children being round people who are so violently closed-minded. Heck, my aunt is a NUN and she's not that closed-minded! For the record, those books ended up at the local library, in the YA section. I asked the librarian about it and she said "Its listed as YA, so thats where I'm putting it. This library does not believe in censorship." Glad someone in this community agrees with >> This story really shocked me, but I know I shouldn't have been surprised. I've known for a long time that even though we say, "Love everyone," many people don't. I am growing up in a very open-minded family. I was taught to never make fun or someone because of race, or preference, to never stare at disabled people and so forth. I am happy to say that my school is probably one of the most opened minded of all. We do not discriminate against anyone, at least, the majority doesn't. However, there are mainly whites at my school, with only a handful of African Americans, Asians and other types. This year, my grade's Homecoming king and queen were both African American. They are the only two in our grade, and are both outstading students. I'm getting off the topic though. There are no gay people there that I know of. That's the thing. I think they're afraid of coming out, and I don't really blame them. People in my school call others gay all the time. It's come to mean the same thing as calling someone a jerk. I think that the point is getting across though, if slowly. Many people my age are not discriminatory. I hope this means that the next generation will be the same way, and that slurs against others drop off. This is the Goddess of Sensitivity reporting for role call! Hmmm...what will my followers recieve? They will have the knowledge that this Goddess will always listen to their problems with a kind ear. She will know exactly how you are feeling. She will comfort you in pain...sounds like _Shadow Lover._ Basically, She's there for you. She will provide a shoulder to cry on. And She will never forget her followers! She will also present each of her followers a hankerchief like the one I recieved at my ceremony. I will always stay dry, no matter how much you cry into it, and it will change colors depending on the emotion felt. Our zoo just recieve two artic wolves, and the ad on t.v. says they are the only pair in the US., maybe farther. I don't remember exactly. They are looking for names. I thought to ask here, because they tend to look for reasons behind the names. There is a male and a female. I'm looking for mythlogical names perhaps, but pronouncible! Last time they named something, it was a spider monkey. They named it Minerva after, IIRC, the goddess who changed a man into a spider. Doesn't sound like a very good reason to me, but it's their decision... Oh drat, there's no Misty in here at all. Ummm...lemme think.... obMisty: We don't hear about wolves much in Misty's books, do we? Or am I mistaken... (tm) Does anyone have any idea at all on how Misty will handle the loss of magic? Okay, wait, I know there is still *some* magic, but will things now be like, oh say, a fisherman trying to catch fish in mist instead of a river? I know, bad analogy But the magic is evenly distributed about now, so it's like a ground fog, instead of in nodes (like rivers, streams etc) I think that little magics will still work (making of mage-lights for example) but if a mage does any major magic, it will only be Master-level (ie, all the magic comes from *inside* instead of from external sources) I wonder how the rate of recuperation will be different (if at all) Quick question - the gryphon fertility spell? any ideas on that subject? Masters get to use ley-lines. > Quick question - the gryphon fertility spell? any ideas on that subject? Well, it should still work, since it's only a couple of very small spells.
