The &#-+AT+-$!! founding/Sun&Shadow/Windrider books. Every few weeks, someone says, "Gee, I'd really like to see a book about yadda yadda." And half a million people say, "Yeah! Me too!" And someone says, "Yes, but Misty has said she doesn't want to write those books, so we are all out of luck." I swear, I set my watch by this conversation. She is not writing those books. It's no use telling us how much you wish she would, because she's not doing it. She would prefer not to. She likes the story the way it is. Misty has no interest in writing the Sun and Shadow story as a novel, regardless of how much interest we have in reading such a novel. No! She said no, okay? And until someone has at least a shred of evidence that she's reconsidering, I think the book is closed on this issue. Talk to her at DragonCon if you must, but no one on this list has anything more to say about the subject until there's, well, something to discuss besides NO. Well, I have two reasons why I don't think this is so. One is Altra. IMHO, Karal's already got something like a Companion-bond to him. The second is a SB reason, so I won't say it. In AotQ, they say that the prince's name was Restil and his Companion's name was Steladar (p. 123 AotQ). In "Windrider Unchained" they refer to Windrider's Companion as Darshay. "Darklord has left them by shadows encumbered Darshay and Windrider trapped in his gloom..." So unless she changed Steladar's name for the filk song, I think it's unlikely that Windrider was the first heir to the Valdemaran throne. What I meant was that the God(esse)s who made the Companions may have thought, Vkanis: *We need a practical form for the Guardian Spirits.* Kal'enel : *Oh look, Baron V has a pegasus on his crest. Yes, Rainwood, I do think Amberdrake is one of the best. If I could pick one character I would like to meet, to have a friendship with, he would be at the top of the list. I have never paired with anyone, but I'm afraid the idea of him may have spoiled me for all others. Another favorite of mine has always been Vanyel. It is really hard for me to read LHM sometimes (and I have read it many times!) particulary the first book, because I can identify with so many of the situations. So I think a lot about Vanyel, and a couple of things have always bothered me about the events surrounding the end of his life. The first is Savil, and the way that she died. Van was so guilt stricken, so grief stricken. And Savil's spirit lived on, and returned. What I wonder, is did they ever talk again? Did he get a chance to apologize, or say goodbye, or say that he loved her? Also, I was thinking the other day that life was really rough for Vanyel. He was always hurt, tired, overextended and alone, with few exceptions. Based on the stories of other Heralds, this seems most out of the ordinary. Was Vanyel's time a rougher time to be a Herald, do you think? Was his world less civilized? Or was it just him? Something that set him apart for such difficulty. Every other story about Heralds describes them as a brotherhood, a Clan; the brief glimpses we have into their lives and relationships as Heralds shows them to be a tight knit, loving, and supporting group. I am thinking of things like the Heralds' Revels, Talia's Going Away Party, the way they boil out of the collegium in defense of one of their own, etc. Another thing that has always bothered me is Starwind and Moondance. I wonder if they knew when Savil died, and later when Vanyel died. Stef probably never saw them again, and they might have been the only ones who could help him adjust. The only ones who know how to contact them were gone. Well, I feel decidedly melancholy now. I should sign off and try to relax before I start to hurt. C'mon, Hev, it doesn't happen *that* often. I've been around for coming up to a year now, and can't honestly remember this one causing any long winded debate - it rarely gets beyond a mail or two, and heck, we've had more'n that from you lately on Misty wimmin. We seem to be getting ourselves wound up into a tetchy state again, the last one was the dreaded centrism debate as I recall. Now we've oldies pouncing on newbies, oldies on oldies, newbies getting bolshy - the list is evolving - there's a lot of people who no longer consider themselves "new", and a lot of the oldies that were around when I started have faded out and gone. Did a true double take on someone's mail today - someone saying they weren't allowed to wear pants at 13 or something? It took about 10 seconds for the 2x4 to connect with the back of the head - pants=trousers in USofA, I think, in my english, pants=knickers. Absolutely no Obmisty - didn't even pick a book up this weekend - my life needs some sorting, ciao ciao, Esmeralda ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Oct 1996 21:24:58 +0800 From: ywlau-+AT+-singnet.com.sg (Lady Windsong) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: A new idea about Florian Message-ID: <199610281324.VAA03390-+AT+-sunflower.singnet.com.sg> Valerie Sanford wrote: >And FLASHED: Maybe Florian isn't bonding to Karal because Karal is to be MO >at sometime in the future. Well, maybe, but I don't think so. It's stated somewhere, and specifically, that it's *not* a Choosing. Florian did not *Choose* Karal, he was just kinda lending him a hand, like a friend-cum-advisor. And my textevd states that it *is* Choosing by a Companion, so the presumptive MO can have the training he/she needs. I think Misty has other plans for Karal. Then again, Charliss could have been thought from young to believe that Baron Valdemar was wrong, the people at that time who did not like the Baron probably tried to "brainwash" their people so as to not have any more people like the Baron. It could be just an illusion on the Empire's part. Jake wrote: >I was doing some thinking today.. and wondering about the adjustment that a >Herald would have to make to be a Companion. Message-ID: Thought I'd introduce a new topic/game.... spot the re-appearing characters. I was cleaning out my bookshelves this weekend and started re-reading AFlight, was struck by a description from the Herald's party scene in the tackshed (this is right after the big official party confirming Elspeth as Heir) : the story teller, middle-aged man with startling twin streaks of grey at his temples. Later, Selenay is sitting with him "resting her head on his shoulder in easy intimacy". Is this Eldan? When Eldan and Kero first meet, he is described with the two white streaks, and mentions knowing one of his year-mates pretty well and being shocked when he found out Selenay was the Heir. So...oh keepers of the timeline... is the timing consistent for Eldan to be "middle aged" (at least as described by an 18 yr old girl) when Talia was promoted to Whites and Elspeth was confirmed Heir? On another note--it must be incredibly frustrating to be highborn/noble in Valdemar. Here you are from a "good family"--which is obviously important in Valdemar and very important in every other country we've seen in Misty's Velgarth--but, no matter how blue-blooded you are, how diligently you serve your country, how brave you are in battle....you will never be among the elect, the inner circle, if a stupid white horse didn't Choose you. And how frustrating to be the unChosen child of the Monarch! What happens to you? As a highborn, you can be Seneschal or Lord Marshall, but you get a Herald assigned to you, who has an equal vote to yours in Council, and reports (not to you!!) but back to the Heraldic Circle and the Monarch. And they have these bewildering gifts that you don't understand and are never explained to you. Yes, if you are interested only in "the good of Monarch and Country" this wouldn't bother you, but how many people do you know in positions of power who are not personally ambitious? Does this qualify me? Ah, I am He. Your qualifications are impeccable, but I dunno. You may have to fight it out (or share) with Deniz for the title of High Priestess. She's (hopehopehope that's right ) been worshipping very well. Deniz?<< Yes, that's right, oh Divine One. Let's see. I've just survived two tests in the space of two days which I did not study for until the last hour before, have a Physics Lab due tomorrow which I haven't started, am meeting today with my lab partner for Chem and it's a lab that I don't understand and haven't read the book for at all, and haven't studied yet for a test on Wednesday for which I've known what chapters will be covered for oooohhhhh... 3-4 weeks. Anything else? Oh, yeah. I *still* have to get that short "Stop the Press" in to all the papers here with my petition stuff about the Red Cross in it, I regularly pulled up "One-Night Wonders" and "Morning Miracles" for English papers (when I still took them), sometimes starting the paper a mere two hours before due date -- and got A's, I might add, I still haven't cleaned up my stove, and this is starting to get a little too personal. I draw the line at showering. I don't *ever* procrastinate on that, as I don't think that Matscrumptious would appreciate dirty bad-smelling offerings, I mean cats are all finicky about cleaning themselves, and do it at least ten times a day. If you would like it, well, tough -- maybe you should leave that to your hermits (you know, the lurkers who are so busy in their work they never get around to reading the posts, or, if they do, don't reply because, well, they're busy with other things, or somebody else will say what they were gonna. Hhmm. Who comes to mind? Do you think Lady Thess has become one of your hermits regarding the list?) High Priestess of Procrastination. Hmmm. I like the sound of that. I'd have to make sure it wouldn't go to my head, though, and make me think (oh, horrors) I wouldn't have to procrastinate as often. Oh, by the way, Renee. WELCOME!!!!!<---(How many?) I would have mentioned it earlier in the post, but, well, you know... Uh-oh, that ObMisty is sneaking up from around the corner. I think I'll hold off a bit. Back on that tangent about High Priestess of Procrastination (mmmm, that's fun to write ;d <--- does that look like a silly licking lips smiley? Or is it just me?) Umm, well... to share or to be egotistical and claim it all for myself? Hmm. Okay, I definitely welcome you with open arms into the priest/esshood, Renee. You've earned it. Well, ahhh, I think we can both be High Priestess of Procrastination as long as we're not at the same school. If we were, teachers might notice and all, and keep us away from each other, and give us tutors and make us hand in outlines and other such orderly and timely stuff Run away!>. As you can see, I don't intend to start that Physics lab anytime soon, either. Hmm. Breakfast is a good idea. Let's get this show on the road. Mattycakes and I, deniz, High Priestess of Procrastination (thanks for noticing, Mattiepoo), do welcome you, renee, and hereby anoint and adorn you as co-High Priestess of Procrastination. Now, you can't decide on a costume for Halloween until Wednesday. Hey, anyone got any ideas for someone who's living away from home and therefore doesn't have a wide wardrobe and supply of stuff and low budget? Umm, bless you, my sister, and may you always find your brightest inspiration coming out of your finger/pencil/pen tips an hour before deadline. Now, don't you think you've got some project to work on or some books to read? It's too early in the morning for homework.
