I'm not sure that you can't have a Companion and a Firecat, because Misty seems to say that they are similar but different. I'm also not sure that you can have both a Companion and a Firecat choose you. There's no evidence that it can happen either way. And I don't think Talia is a good example of a Sunpriest because it was MEANT as an honorary title to make Valdemar a little more acceptable to the general Karse population. It is important that Talia takes the title seriously and is learning some of the things necessary to a Sunpriest because maybe she will get a Firecat at some point to help her... Edghill/LotPW Message-ID: <961028162038_219508707-+AT+-emout15.mail.aol.com> Storm Breaking- not a spoiler. I finally got my copy of Storm Breaking from the library (and there was much rejoicing!) I've only read about120 pages so far, and it's quite good. I do agree with Danya, though. The Empire chapter I've read was interesting, but heavily padded. Did we really need 2 1/2 pages describing the clerks and their function, working area, etc.? My problem with this scene is that Misty describes the whole set up in exhaustive detail, then has Melles get his orders written up and signed. So we're told how getting documents written up works, then we see the process happening. A little clever editing and we could have gotten the same information in half the wordage. Misty could have just had Melles go to the clerks, and show us the process. Instead, she wrote the scene rather like this paragraph, in which you get the same information repeated several times. If I wanted to, I could edit this down to half the words. :-) One of my major frustrations with Misty is that she *describes* and *explains* things too much instead of just having them happen. Guy Gavriel Kay does the opposite. An example is this is in _The Wandering Fire_. I'm not going to spoil this for anyone, but a crucial plot twist involves the reenactment of the midsummer's night sacrifice of Liadon at Dun Maura. All of the characters seem to know the story and understand what's happened. But Kay never actually *tells* us the story- we piece together enough to go on through the characters' comments and actions. So unless the clerks play an crucial part in the plot later on, and it's absolutely necessary for us to know all the details of how they work, the scene was padding. As Danya has said, I'd rather have more of Silverfox and Firesong's evolving relationship, or more about what Natoli and the folks at Haven were doing. ---------------- Lady Undine wrote: > Has anyone read Rosemary Edgehill's Bast books?< I liked them as character studies, they were very entertaining, and the details about Paganism and the relations between the various Trads were well done. Someone posted that they thought that the middleaged storyteller in AFlight was Eldan. I thought that I was the only one that noticed that! It's nice to know that I'm not going out of my mind... BTW, I've been into Misty for a while now. I've read her Velgarth, Sacred Ground, and Diana Tregarde books. I never read her Lark and the Wren books. Are they any good? I've been wondering. There has been something bothering me about Silver Gryphon. Remember the mage, Vikteren? He was an important character in the Black Gryphon, and he was mentioned a few times in White Gryphon, but he just dissappeared after that. He wasn't in SG at all. At one part, they called all the mages of White Gryphon together to search for Blade and Tas, and I thought that Vikteren would have been there (he _was_ a Master), but he wasn't. This really bugged me because I liked Vikteren. He had a kind of rogueish prescence to him. :) Does anyone know what happened to him or have any theories as to why Misty dropped him as a character? To subscribe to the White Coconut list send a message to majordomo-+AT+-teleport.com with no subject and the body of the message containing: subscribe wccnut-l That thing at the end is a lowecase 'L' not a 1 or an i. Please all those in the old mage-war subscribe to this one. Thank you, and since this is not a list related post, I'll shut up now. --Gyrfalcon ==================msowers-+AT+-menger.eecs.stevens-tech.edu================== Sometimes, even the darkest of mages hear a nagging little voice in the back of their mind, urging them to drag out the old armor, dress up and play the White Knight for a while. "But nothing ever changed in the core building of the Ashkevron home. Elspeth had told them all that she recalled hearing some of the family actually boasting about just that. There was even a story that if anyone ever did anything besides add to the buildings, the ghost of some long-dead ancestor would rise out of the grave tou haunt the one who dared change what he had wrought." (pg 106 DAW hardcover) Does anyone else think that that long-dead ancestor might be Vanyel's grandfather Joserlin? As I recall, Van said something about Joserlin having very odd ideas about what should go where... Of course there is always the possibility that the ghost in the story is some Ashkevron we don't know about (and given the 600 some years between Van and Elspeth it's quite possible). Opinions would be much appreciated, both pro and con. Myers-Briggs handbook thingy. Under the judging aspect it says "People who prefer to use their Judging process in the outer world tend to live in a planned, orederly way, wanting to regulate and control life. They make decisions, come to closure, and move on. Their lifestyle is structured and organized, and they like to have things settled. Sticking to a plan and schedule is very important to them, and thy enjoy their ability to get things done. Characteristics of most people who prefer Judging: -Scheduled -Organized -Systematic -Methodical -Plan -Like closure--to have things decided -Avoid last-minute stresses" There you go, if anyone has any questions, and can't get a copy of the handbook thingy, feel free to ask me about anything. Of course, the Judging aspect of your peronality will of course be influenced by the other three aspects, so everything about it won't fit you perfectly, but most should if you're a J person. Now, all you P people like me, just think almost the exact opposite of J, and you have Perceiving. :) Bye! A thought just struck me, with so many J people on the list, could that be why people hate to see old conversation threads, because like closure, and like to move on? Hmmmmm......This personality thing really works :) It also says about INTJ's that they quickly find meaningful patterns in external events, hmmmm, like finding every significant detail in a certain author's books? (Misty) I wonder......... I'm in a silly mood today :) ========================= Okay, Misty stuff now, just to start a new conversation thread, let's see here, okay, got one, if Misty's novels were made into a movie, who would you cast? <*BIG*WEG*> :) Just kidding. :) Seriously though, I have a question for those of you who have been so lucky that you have gotten to read SR, and SB, do we meet a bunch of new characters, or is it like a continuation of the Winds series, with Elspeth and Co., and also, do we get to see more of Talia's and Selenay's kids? Or are they just in the background? ====================== How many of you saw Voyager the other night? You know, the one with Q, and the Q who wanted to kill himself? Remember the part where they are in the continuem (sp?) and he says noone talks because there is nothing to talk about, it's all already been said? That reminded me of the list, and the thing about frequently discussed topics (FDT's), and I thought, I don't want that to happen here, who cares how many times we have the conversation, at least it's conversation, and there is usually at least one thing new that we haven't thought of (most of the time, not one's like, maybe Kero's companion is really Van's aunt!!!) so it's a good thing. Okay, I'll shut up, this wasn't a flame or anything critical, just one of those rare insightful moments when I connect things and go "wow!" I'll shut-up now. ===================== I get to go to Disneyland next Thursday! Yaaaay! Lady Becky(LIG), Goddess of Tofu and Dry Breakfast Cereals Founder of the AftPoSWT (confused? Just ask.) Message-ID: <01IB70TQ1H9U00J6TG-+AT+-ACAD.DRAKE.EDU> I'm a little confused about the concept of handfasting. In the Arrows books, they make references to the 'year and day handfasting'. What exactly does that mean? Do they actually fast for a year and a day? That's a long time to actually fast. Also, does anyone think that Misty took some of her Velgarth references from the Wiccan culture? (i remember something about wicca being mentioned a while back, so if I'm rehashing i apologize) but someone told me that the handfasting thing was like taken from wicca.
