I consume over 24 liters of Diet Coke a Day, I hate Calculus with the white hot intensity of a thousand suns. In fact, I hate it so much, I burn volume/area problems in effigy! A candlemark is the equivalent of an hour, according to a report in QO. Personality profile...I'm an INTJ...and I'm really amazed at the number of us on the list..I wonder why that is has anyone ever thought of doing the personality profiles of Misty's characters? One of my professors taught a class where we would analyze a literary character and determine his/her personality profile. She's supposed to teach it again..I wonder if she'd let me use Vanyel or Talia for a subject? (Yeah, right...I have about as much of a chance of that as of meeting a talking horse with blue eyes..) But it would be very interesting, I think. IMO, I think Vanyel would be an IN?? He seems rather introverted, and more inclined to trust his instincts than his senses...of course, most Heralds trust their instincts anyway, because of their Gifts, so I'm not sure that would count. Or maybe it would because their Gifts are just as much a part of them as their eyes or ears are...never mind, it's been a long week. Talia would be along the same lines, I think..introverted and intuitive. Or would her Empathy be classified as a sense? I think Elspeth is definitely an extrovert, and Skif, too, and they both seem to be more sensing than intuitive. Any other characters/personalities? How about Companion personalities? And speaking of Companions and along the lines of "I want Misty to write this" (and this may have been mentioned before), I'd like to see a book/trilogy on the woman who becomes Yfandes. I think her life would be absolutely fascinating..and the possiblities are endless with what she could be or do, etc. etc. OK, my mind is running away from me so I'd better go with it. You get a candle, you draw some lines on it, and say "If I'm not back by the second candle mark, panic/rejoice/ pray etc etc etc." Now maybe Valdemar has factories making candles by the ton, all marked with carefully calculated marks, or they're made locally, and candlemarks vary across the country. Mind you - do we ever hear talk of watches, clocks, timepieces? Don't exactly recall anything. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Scott Coniam, I'm sure I won't be the first to pick you up on this, and I'll no way be the last, but, > Is anyone out there interested in opening a Heralds of Valdemar MUSH? > If so please respond to me and I'll get in touch with you guys over > details. Go read http://ftp.herald.co.uk/pub/lists/lackey-archives/abml-faq.1, point 5 - it explains it all. I believe you can find yourself contacted by her legal-eagles if you go ahead. that's all, can't squeeze an obmisty out of my brain - oh the last Storm book has crawled into the Netherlands - saw it on Saturday. I shall, with my usual parsimonious restraint, wait for the standard size paperback to appear. ciao ciao, Esmeralda ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Oct 1996 08:20:41 -0500 From: "Emily L Cartier" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Bday alert/Valdemar MUSH/Procrastination Message-ID: <9610301322.AA02727-+AT+-udecc.engr.udayton.edu> On the subject of birthdays, mine is November 9th (and it just occured to me what a horriblely funny date that is). IIRC, it is in the FAQ that Misty has specifically forbidden any MU** type thingie. I also remember (from archives reading) that the MageWars list was moved to a separate server partially so if Misty's lawyers ever found out about it our wonderful listmistress wouldn't get in trouble. Also from what I can tell, the MageWars list is kind of like a MU** thingie, but Lady Becky and Jaguar and Sundancer probably can explain it better than I can. I just checked Lady Becky's sig and found this: Mailing List Homepage http://www.psnw.com/~deb/becky/misty.html I've been there and it has a bunch of stuff about the Magewars list. Lady Becky said (as evidence for Handmaiden status) >-I have *never* done a report sooner than 2 days before it is due. >-I finished twenty vocabulary cards at lunch today to be handed in at > the next class If that is evidence for handmaiden status I dunno what I'd be. I always prefered to do Latin translations and vocabulary homework at lunch, the period before Latin class. And as for reports, how about not starting until the day before it is due (unilaterally!)? And I NEVER study for tests. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER! It wrecks your grade, I know cause I used to study for tests and I always flunked. If I don't study, I pass. (Yes I know I am strange.) Misty has mad it perfectly clear that this is not to be done. Try reading the list FAQ for her resons, etc<< Good advice. I heard about how Misty put her foot down when I was at a totally different spot on the net, as well. People are using it as an example of what happens if you infringe copyrights. However, if you have her blessings, play on. (I'm not in a theater, so there) Actually, I have a friend who got a "beta tester" of an official Valdemar RPG set. She hasn't answered her e-mail yet, though, so I don't know whether she has it near her or not, and whether she's still legally allowed to use it. Sorry, Wintershard, but you didn't get it right. However, don't rush off to make an ash of yourself quite yet. =) For all of you who may be writing books where you will want to use the thou/thee pattern and for all my fellow deities, here is how it works: "thou" is the English 2nd person singular (informal) pronoun. It is the equivalent of the French and Spanish (and Italian) "tu" and the German "du." Most of the Indo-european languages preserve this distinction of singular vs. plural 2nd person pronouns. Most of these languages, however, also conflate the singular/plural marking with the informal/formal meaning. In English, the way it works is that in informal speech, the 2nd person is divided into singular "thou" and plural "you." In formal speech, only the plural "you" is used, for both singular and plural (If you speak French, you should be familiar with this pattern). This is the problem with Wintershard's post: > Hmm, I'll have to think about it. - Okay I'm done. I Name thee as > Priestess of Subtleness, Discreetness, and Crappy Weather. May you always > be not noticed by thine enemies, but laugh directly in their faces. Also, > you must always curse good weather as it comes. Notice that sometimes a form of "thou" is used, while at other times a forma of "you" is used. This is not permitted in Indo-european languages. You have to pick one formality level and stick with it. On the other hand, the other facet of all this is case, and that is nearly perfect in Wintershard's post. The pronoun "thou," like all English pronouns, can/must be marked to show its case: "thou" for nominative case, "thee" for accusative, "thy" and "thine" for genitive (with an overt and covert object, respectively). The only quibble with the above cited post, is the use of "thine" with an overt object in "thine enemies." And to be honest, there is quite a bit of variation, with some dialects of English accepting "thine" as the genitive form in any context. Anyway, here is the general pronominal paradigm for English: singular plural I we 1st person thou you 2nd person he/she/it they 3rd person case declension is shown as follows: Nom Acc Gen I me my/mine thou thee thy/thine he him his she her her/hers it it its we us our/ours you you your/yours they them their/theirs My apologies to anyone who feels that this is too fluffy. ObMisty: Is there any evidence that there is case or formality morphology in any of Misty's languages, such as Kaled'a'in, Shin'a'in, or Tayledras? I can't think of any. There are a bunch of conditions which will cause Listproc to remove you automatically from the list (the quickest way is to have your mail host respond to any mention of your name with 'No such user'). Note also that if you try to send mail to the list from an address which is not the one from which you originally subscribed, you'll get a message telling you you're not subscribed -- which is accurate, if you're not subscribed from that address... If you're worried about rejoining and getting multiple copies of mail, the best thing to do is write to me off-list first to see whether you've actually been dropped, or whether it's just an address change problem.
