A distance of 1-5 inches between the table and the paper will work best. Then, shine a bright light on the dish. This is your wavepool. Then, drop two round pebbles simultaenously (small marbles work) and look at the paper. The dark points (darker than the waves expanding outward) are the nexus points where two waves meet. This works better than slit diffraction, since you can get a better visualization. The other technique is to go get a slinky and shake one end and have someone else shake the other end. You'll see that your oscillations on the slinky get cancelled by the other persons oscillations when the trough and crests are opposite. And, the corollary is that when the troughs (or crests) add together, then the trough will be deeper (the crest is higher). However, we cannot duplicate the magical waves in Storm Rising since Misty has them rushing in toward the center (ie the location of the pebble contacting the water, your hand on the slinky, the source of the light in slit diffraction). Due to being in a nonmagical world, we cannot send things backwards. :P So, if you can imagine everything I described for the waves going backwards, then you'll get what happens with the magic in Storm Rising. Though, if you have a video camera and you really want to understand this, then you can film dropping the pebbles, the waves going out and then running the tape backwards. :) Finally, remember that light is both a wave and a particle, which is why slit diffraction works. The magical waves in Storm Rising are only described in terms of waves, thus they probably aren't to be interpretted as particles which, again, is why a wave pool works better for visualization than slit diffraction. Having tossed out even more technical jargon on this... I've already graphed Carrying Capacity on the computer. Now I have to do Wave Interference? Spencer. Here's my approximation of the wavepool experiment using the limited range of characters I hope everyone can see on their computers. You will notice that this is for multiple "stones" that are dropped simultaneously. I actually did this with a perty-dern-nearly perfectly circular wave pool in a dark physics room with a bright light and a little machine with two nodes that you could set to oscillate in-phase or out-of-phase. This example is for if the nodes were oscillating in-phase. As you will notice, it consists of a straight line (the perpendicular bisector of AB) and many hyperbolas. If they were oscillating out-of-phase, you would get rid of the perpendicular bisector, and move things around so that you had hyperbolas where what are right now spaces. _ \ \ \ | / / / _ \ \ \ \ | / / / / \ \ \ \ | / / / / \ \ \ | | | / / / A*| | | | | | | | |*B / / / | | | \ \ \ / / / | | | \ \ \ _/ / / / | \ \ \ \_ / / / | \ \ \ This diagram still holds true for if only one set of "stones" were dropped, because, if you think about it, dropping just one stone in a lake gives you more than one ripple -- just the first one's the biggest, and the rest are diminishing in size. So, if the latter were the case, these lines would slowly dissappear, starting with the ones closest to the nodes ... er, "rocks." I got an A on the lab we did this in and trust my memory pretty well, because, er, I love Physics. I don't always understand it or get it to work right, but I love it anyway, that's why I'm doing Electrical Engineering, and I personally don't see any conflict between either of these "hard sciences" and Magic. By the way, it's even harder to try and write music out. Ugh. >>However, we cannot duplicate the magical waves in Storm Rising since Misty has them rushing in toward the center (ie the location of the pebble contacting the water, your hand on the slinky, the source of the light in slit diffraction).<< This only seems to work for one point in my visualization right now. Cennydd said: >>[snip long, yet demonstrative, process] The first thing that you will notice is that there are more than one intersection points. However, there is a non-random (in fact, very regular) distribution that could be described with a mathematical model (I can't do it myself, but I recognize that it is possible).<< That mathematical model would be the set of hyperbolas I keep referring to and finally graphed. Actually, to be quite technical, the perpendicular bisector itself is just a special case of hyperbola. It just happens to be the easiest to visualize. >>If the circles are the peaks, then we have to remember that there are also values to be found between the peaks.<< Granted. I have only been demonstrating the super-crests, because those are the easiest to see. The spaces would be the super-troughs, and in between them would be the neutral zones. Not only would things be nasty in the super-crest zone, but they would also be nasty in the super-trough zone, and in-between. If you think of it as pressure (or sound waves), too much pressure is bad, but so is too little. The extremes are the worst, but judging by how strong Misty says these things are, the difference between some of the in-betweens and the extremes would be like the difference between getting pounded by a jackhammer or a sledgehammer -- not much. How'd you like to get hit by a pressure zone and spontaneously implode or explode? In my opinion, it's the same as that, only with magic, not pressure or water waves. As Wintershard said, things would just be generally unpleasant between the two, and to expand upon that, around the two as well, with just two lees (which I'm not sure about) on the outside of the two nodes. I have to say I'm fairly jazzed about the rash of fairy tale material. I'm a tremendous fan of retellings of all shapes and sizes (I have a home altar to Parke Godwin). In fact, my project du jour is a short story based on Sleeping Beauty that I'm really enjoying the hell out of while writing it. It does seem like a bit of a traditional plot for Mercedes Lackey though, gender-wise. Not that I'm necessarily opposed on those grounds, but it surprised me. It may not be as different as the blurb makes it sound, however. Maybe the same person wrote that copy who was responsible for Vanyel learning magic from the Shin'a'in In all probability, the reason she didn't write the books for Terri Windling's fairy tale series is that, well, Terri Windling is not a major Misty fan. Her editorial tastes are somewhat more...how do we say gently... literary? To my knowledge, the only Misty books she's ever included on her roster of Year's Best are the LHM books -- which, naturally, rule and everyone knows it. Terri has taken to including a category in her list of "tremendously popular books that aren't that great, but probably deserve some mention." That's where she puts Misty, Robert Jordan, most David Eddings, Terry Goodkind, that sort of Mega High Fantasy Series stuff. As in, it's fun, but nothing she'd really recommend. So as editor of the series, she's obviously looking for something that's a whole different style from Misty's work. Why are > they now restricted to just the Moonpaths? (And did anyone wonder what > important events the Avatars have to "go attend to?" What do Avatars do > when they're not counseling An'desha). No, you've got it backwards. The quote is: SB, p425 "'It seems that those whose guardians were entirely spirit fared the best,' said Lyam in that dry way of his." This means that the people whose guardians were noncorporeal got least damaged. An'desha had the Avatars -- not hurt. Sejanes had Stef and Van -- not hurt. Firesong had Need and Yfandes -- got burned. Karal -- Florian and Altra -- blinded. So, the more physical guardians they had, the more damage they took. And I don't think that the Avatars are confined to the Moonpaths. It's just that that's the only place that they can talk to An'desha, as it's the only place where he can touch the spirit world. I hope that it brings all you wish. I have but a humble offering. (please pardon the rhyme scheme--a little too much Dr. Seuss ;) ) What have I brought thee To brighten thy day? A rare gift of summer To keep gloom away. A cricket of crystal That shines in the light And sings songs of summer Through long winter's night. The heady sweet scent Of a night blooming flower, The fragrant star-jasmine To brighten your bower. A soft blowing breeze With the faint hint of chimes, The fragrance of hay, And the whisper of pines. Happy Birthday, Summersong!!!!! ********* Undine warned: >>Frank Herbert fans beware! The Dune books have been optioned again- this time to be filmed as a miniseries. Let's hope that it's better than the movie!<< Actually, I watched a Director's cut version of the Dune movie a few months back. It made a lot more sense than the original version(movie not book). The thing lasted four or five hours though. ******* Rain asked: >>You'll have to forgive this - whilst I can "reply" to a message, I can't figure out what y'all are doing when you BRAID several messages together.<< I just use the good old copy and paste method. But for my convience, I get my mail in digest form. I download it then flip between works and my e-mail form. Later she said: >>Wyrsa - p. 269 of SG - Tad says "One of the old Adepts before Ma'ar made things like this to mimic kyree, and called them wyrsa. . .they couldn't be controlled and got loose from him"<< That sounds familiar--can we say Sauron? (orcs as elves, trolls as ents, ect) >>Which leads me to believe that perhaps the only thing Ma'ar created were the makaar. I am fairly sure that kyree, hertasi, tervardi and the like were actually pre-Urtho, pre Mage-war, etc.<< Don't recall about the kyree and the tervardi but I do know that the hertasi were created creatures. I'm not sure that Urtho was the creator, but it seems like thats mentioned somewhere in BG. I'll have to try to dig it out. >>(If you remember Keth telling the Shin'a'in children about Gervase the Lizard Wizard, did anyone ever put that particular hertasi into a timeline pre or post mage war?)<< I think from the description of the place Gervase lived, it was post mage war. I'll find that text evd as well. Now I good excuse(like I needed one!) to reread BG. ******* Geometry! Physics! Aieee!!! No, no more, please. I'm just not wired to handle this sort of thing. My eyes glaze over and my ears start to ring. All those nasty little math formulas I locked in the dungeons long ago are starting to escape. Mercy! Uncle! Ok, I'll stop whining. Thanks for the warning Deniz. Kaatje -- a kindred soul!! I am not alone!! I think I need a rest! Goodnight, Glithoniel Goddess of Tardiness Mistress of Willowhawk(in exile) "And down the river's dim expanse/ Like some bold seer in a trance, Seeing all his own mischance--/ With a glassy countenance/ Did she look to Camelot." --Alfred, Lord Tennyson ("The Lady of Shalott") ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Nov 1996 01:52:40 -0500 From: Glithoniel-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Storm Breaking *SPOILER* Message-ID: <961102015238_1181313942-+AT+-emout11.mail.aol.com> Just a little S P O I L E R S P A C E Lady Sophia wrote on the following points: >>At the end of Storm Breaking, when Florian is discussing the choices that everyone is going to make, Karal looks at him, and thinks "Well, I know what choice he's going to make" and makes a mental note to look for a young Herald in about fifteen or so years, but to remember that he - the young Herald - isn't going to remember any of this. I still wonder what choices everyone else made...<< I feel the same way. I'm just dying to know where Van, Stef, and 'Fandes went. Are they going to crop up again? Or was this just her way of resolving certain loose strings. >>One thing has me confused, (well, one thing about Storm Breaking, anyway). Altra says something along the lines of "only those without physical forms survived the shielding" or something like that.<< I seem to recall that it was the people with the non-physical anchors who had fared best. Both Firesong and Karal had physical anchors and both were seriously injured. Ah, found it: page 425 Daw books _Storm Breaking_ "It seems that those whose guardians were entirely spirit fared the best," said Lyam in that dry way of his. And Altra was the only one of the protectors to survive at all. Even the Avatars lost the part of themselves that bound them to the physical world. >> The sections with Melles were pretty boring, but it's kind of refreshing to see a Misty-villian who isn't automatically sexually depraved, and who isn't going to go completely insane with revenge.<< They were boring but mostly because of the over use of description(IMO) in those sections. Misty seemed to go hog-wild with the details. I kinda liked Melles. He's a nice Machiavellian(sp?) type character. Not all bad and not all good, just sorta self-centered. And yes it was extremely refreshing to have a story without the sex crazed maniac bent on insane revenge!! >>What I wonder is.... if Solaris and Tremane are going to get together... and if so, how in the world are they going to manage it?<< There seemed to be something going on between the two of them. Maybe, maybe not. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. As to who would commute, my vote is for Solaris. She has the firecat Hansa, after all. I loved the fact that Iftel not only has gryphons but that Vkandis is their god as well. Sorta ties Vkandis and Kalenel(Shin'a'in goddess--I may have the wrong name there) back together again, don't ya think. Sounds like there is plenty of material for future books. Personally I would like to see more of Talia, Karal, and Tremane. I'd also like more with Melles believe it or not.
