Personally, I pronounce Van's name Van (like the automobile)-yell (as in
the sound).  But, when I listen to Shadow Stalker, he's Vahn-yl.  I 
still like the first better, because I just couldn't see Savil calling
him "Vahn" as a nickname.

Huh. The first time I read LHM, I thought "Yifandez".  Later, I thought
about the RL name "Yvonne" being pronounced "Eevonne", and I just sort
of changed the pronunciation in my mind (I do that a lot, esp. with
Jordan's characters.  You don't even want to know how I pronounced
Moiraine and Nyneave. :)  At least Mat was easy to do. <g> ).  I always
said kyree the way Meg Davis does.  As for Shin'a'in, I do sort of a meld
of  "Shin'eye'in" and "Shin'ah'in".

No no Kory.  It's a *blesssing*, not a curse.  But the blessing is a

I go with the theory that Evendim is smaller b/c Ma'ar only had the palace
for a few years, while Urtho had the Tower for decades at least.
Remember, both explosions were caused my the same spell (different devices
that did the same thing), which explosively released the bonds of magic.
Ma'ar's  was triggered by Skan, and Urtho's by his death.

In regard to Silverfox's sexual orientation-

I agree with those who figured he was probably bi. In the scene where he
commented on Firesong being "exclusively shay'a'chern", the two are
discussing Firesong's unhappiness about losing An'desha. Firesong is
miserable because he doesn't think he'll find someone else for a permanent
relationship. Did anyone else notice that during this whole discussion there
is no suggestion that Silverfox could be Firesong's life partner? Now,
Silverfox may be being sensitive by not offering himself at this moment-
after all, Firesong is in the middle of a bad break up. 

More to the point, Firesong doesn't seem to be considering Silverfox as a
possible candidate. Why not? I know we've all assumed they were lovers
previously, but if you think about it, Misty never actually says this. There
are sort of nudge nudge wink wink comments about "massages" but where does it
actually come out and say they were sleeping together? And if they were, why
doesn't Firesong see Silverfox as a potential partner? They like each other,
they obviously find each other attractive, they see each other as equals. I
figured it was because Silverfox *wasn't* exclusively shay'a'chern, and
Firesong didn't think he would want to commit to a permanent shaych
relationship. 

Just for the record, the Ladies of the Pink Wand decided long ago that since
it appears that Silverfox *is* going to become Firesong's partner, he does
qualify as an Object of Unrequited Love/Lust, and has been duly Elevated.

Deniz (i think) wanted someone to jog her memory about Lores - sooo

Firemist retreives her memory leash from a storage closet, slips it onto the
offending memory and takes it for a jog <g>

Lores is the 'fathead, but an honset fathead' from LHM. Usually recognized
as the 'dread Herald that beats Companions' Lores is a Fetcher with little or
no MindSpeech. He mistook Tashir's companion ghost for a demon since he
believed Tashir was a murdered and companions don't choose murderers.
Later, Lores becomes an advisor to tashir when tashir inherits he throne
because, after all, he's an 'honest fathead' 

IMO wouldn't things be just a bit *strained* between the two? After all, Lores
beat Tashir's companion while Tashir was on his back (safe to assume tashir
probably got whipped too), and i would not consider this an auspicious start
to a trusting relationship. I don't care if heralds are supposed to be 
compassionate etc, this seems a bit much! Talia didn't forgive the brother
with the poker. . .

BTW, Lores has been the subject of debate on the 'who the hell was Florian,
anyway?' discussion. Lores-Florian, kinda close. . . It was more or less
dismissed because it wasn't close enough <eg Savil-Sayvil> and we agreed
that Misty would never be *that* subtle.

And well she shouldn't!!!!!!! There is nothing less forgivable in this
world than causing deliberate harm, and when the object of such sadism is a
sibling, particularly a younger more dependant one..... May the Star-Eyed
send him to the coldest Hell (and there may he get what he deserves)!!!

Further on Talia, as to previous comments on her timidity, I think she had
very good reasons for that aspect of her personality, and it is to her
credit that she overcame that kind of abuse- and twice over.

I would say now, for the record, that I too am a Champion of Vanyel, for
all of Heather's reasons- and a few of my own.

Finally, though I feel some affinity with the Tale'edras, I admit that
Heather's comment about "birds and gay men" struck me as amusing also, but
left me a little confused.  "Misty lives with she'chorne? I don't remember
that from her biography!" :}

Well it depends if you're the type of person who likes reading a very
exciting book and then a not-so exciting book or vice-versa,hope this isn't
a spoiler but SB is better than SG (I haven't read all of SG or SB mind,
this is only my opinion <g>)

There's been some discussion about the pronounciation of characters in
Valdemar. 
IMHO I always think that you should pronounce it how you want, I mean I just
can't imagine Vanyel being pronounced "Vahnyel", it sounds pompous and
English (Sorry to any Brits :) 

Also thanks to all those who answered to my Wicca question, its nice to know
that there are so many here and we witches are gaining a bit more ground on
the world, and maybe taken more seriously.  If you haven't already then you

Well, lets see.  I would have to agree with you, and everybody else.
Valdemar is stagnating - it doesn't mean that the books aren't enjoyable,
just that no new issues are being broached.  Whenever I look at the SERRAted
Edge books, I feel guilty - not doing enough to help kids etc. Of course, my

ObMisty:  All those capitals remind me of Vanyel's mother.  I liked the old 
girl, actually.  In the end, her heart was in the right place.
ObMisty2: We see some different instruments in Velgarth...that shepherd's 
flute, the lute, the harp.  Nothing extremely sophisticated (not that a 
harp isn't bloody difficult....a true art form) like a piano, or something 
of the sort.  I wonder whether Valdemar has the use of steel for strings, 
or do they use catgut yet?  It makes quite a difference in the style of 
performance....might explain why everything seems to be in ballads, etc., 
rather than orchestras.  
Segue:  I caught a performance of Beethoven's Ninth performed on 17th 
century instruments that was truly fabulous.  Another one of those pieces 
that reduces....no, not *reduces*.....*elevates* me to tears when I hear 
it.  Adagio for Strings, too.  And anything by Vaughn Williams.  Amazing 
how music has so much power to move the human soul.

works though (ie. B,W,&SGryphon, Storm W,R,&B).  Her earlier works were

I think it may have something to do with their gifts.  In White Gryphon,
Hadanelith picked up the language of the Haighlei very quickly because he
was able to read it partly from their minds.  I guess the same thing could
work for any person gifted with Thoughtsensing.

I remember reading somewhere in the Gryphon trilogy (SG?) that the makaar

The later on in time (chronologically) the CDs get, the more upbeat they
are.  In other words, By The Sword is the most upbeat of the three that
I've heard already.  ShadowStalker is the most folkish.  It depends on
what you like.  I liked all of them about equally.  My advice would be to
listen to them in chronological order.
BTW, does anyone know why Misty didn't record "Kerowyn's Ride"?

I know that there's been a lot of debating about Misty and "The One True
Way" lately.  I haven't read Storm Breaking so I think that I may be
missing something, but here goes.  I remember a discussion between Skan
and Urtho in BG about Ma'ar when Skan is recuperating.  It was about how
Urtho could almost understand/feel sorry for Ma'ar.  He said something to
the effect of he could understand Ma'ar's way of thinking.  This might be
an attempt on Misty's part to make us not hate her bad guys, maybe...
As to the "One True Way", people have been referring to Kal'enel and
Vkandis as if they're the only god/esses around.  What about Mero's one
God?  and Need's Twin gods?  And Kernos and Astera and what's-her-name -
Hydatha? (I think Yfandes mentions her in MPrice after Stef takes the dart
out of her and she wakes up.)  I know they don't get a lot of attention in
the books, but don't they count anyway?

Hmmmm.  This will probably come as a shock to almost everyone on the list,
and especially to Heather, but I would probably be tied between AotQ and
MPawn.  I would probably end up with Arrows, but I would really be bummed
about losing Pawn.  Despite the fact that Van is not my favorite character
overall, I do like Pawn and I like Van in it (he reminds me of myself in
some very specific ways).

Well, it depends on the author, whether you should just pronounce the
character names any old way.  With Misty, I tend to go for Standard
American English pronunciation except where there is clearly some reason
to suspect otherwise (Karsites are obviously Germanic in their language,
for example).  However, other authors are not so undemanding.  Steven
Brust, for instance, is Hungarian, and he has indicated that the names of
his characters and books are based on Hungarian and should be pronounced
as such (even going so far as to include a brief lesson on Hungarian
phonetics and orthography in one of his books).  Other authors, such as
Tolkien, have been equally exacting and not following their
recommendations sort of obviates their efforts.

As to the latter question, thou art treading on thin ice.  Little dost
thou know that such a question was the root cause of one of the most hotly
contested and long-running battles on this list: The Mage War!
Ne'ertheless, I will venture into such dangerous waters long enough to say
that I do actually have all of the Xanth books up to "Golem in the Gears"
and that I liked all of them up to (and including) "Centaur Aisle"
although I much preferred "A Spell for Chameleon" and "Castle Roogna."

As for music, I am currently listening (while I type this) to a really
cool mix tape of Euro-dance: La Bouche, EBTG, 2unlimited, The Real McCoy,
Gabrielle, Crystal Waters, C&C Music Factory, M People, etc.  The Club and
House type stuff.  I also like Trance and Techno (Obumbrata RULES!).  That
notwithstanding, I also have everything Enya has done (as Enya), oodles of
Loreena McKennitt, classical, various dyke divas (except the Indigo
Girls), Sisters of Mercy, and even Country.  Oh, and of course, Alana.  I
guess you could say that I am eclectic.  =)  Anyway, now you know. 

Ok, here is a recycle of an ObMisty: what popular song (from whatever
genre) would you match up to which Misty characters?  Or what songs would
you like to hear in the background, if they actually made a Misty movie.
Sort of a variation of the casting thread (which can stay dormant for a
while longer, please!).  For example, "Your Loving Arms" by Billie Ray
Martin would be perfect for Stef and Vanyel.  Or "Never Breathe Again" by
Toni Braxton would be great for Dirk and Talia (or any of the
lifebondeds).

Oh, but I already am, but my best is indeed done late at night (hmm, perhaps

About pronunciation of Vanyel's name:

For some reason, I've always pronounced it Vanel, treating the Y as silent. I
never liked Vanyel as van-yell, just a matter of personal preference
<shrugs>. And Yfandes, same as Kory, Yihfandes. Though, eefandes, like
Yvette, makes sense, I like the sound of the other one better, just personal
preference again.

As to music, I listen to almost everything-- heavy metal, rock, alternative,
pop, dance, a little rap, a little country, celtic music, and world music.
Loreena McKennit has many fans on the list, if you haven't heard of her, go
out and buy her CD's! She's something special. 

Xanth, well I *used* to like it, read some of those when I was 10-14. Don't
know if I'd still like it if I tried it now. And, by way of warning, many,
many, many folks here on the list do not, I repeat, do Not like Piers
Anthony. I advise you to be ready to duck, dodge, and/or hide, as you might
come under attack via homing cocanuts, and other such missiles <g>.
