Also, the only reason that Darkwind was picking up so much from Elspeth's mind in the way of language, is that she offered to let him do at, otherwise, he would probably have been struggling also. I thought that Ma'ar's palace collapsed 'cos the weapon Skan brought in kinda *stopped* magic from working, so everything sort of collapsed? Lemme see... Um-hmm. Urtho says, as he's dying, "It's --like the box I gave Zhaneel. But bigger. Dissolves the bonds--of spells." (Pg 435, _Black Gryphon_) And Vikteren also says earlier that Urtho keyed some kind of destructive spells into himself, so that when he dies the tower becomes unstable, or something like that. Sorry if this sounds dumb, but is this why the Mage Storms cause disruptions in magic? Because the *original* cause was the magic falling apart? I know, this doesn't answer the question of why the Dhorisa Plains are larger than Lake Evendim. *sigh* Now y'all know why I do *horribly* in Lit exams. I go totally off track. I've been lurking lately-mostly b/c of way too much homework-so, I apologize if some of this is way outdated. First of all, (please don't throw anything too hard) I LOVE Piers Anthony's books-including Xanth. Although I am willing to admit that the series has gotten slightly old. But the Incarnations books are wonderful and I would also recommend the Bio of a Space Tyrant to any who may be interested. It's kinda of intense at times, but still, I liked it. I agree with whoever said that there should be a sequel to the Pegasus in Flight books. They were really great (unfortunately I haven't had time to re-read them lately). But I've always kinda considered the Rowan books to be sequels since, IMHO, the Rowan is a direct descendant of (oh!! what's her name? Rhyssa-is that even close?) the woman with the white streak in her hair, star character of Pegasus in Flight. I will pretty much listen to any kinda of music you can name. But I haven't had much exposure to opera, and I don't listen to all that much rap. I do listen to a lot of Elton John, Sting, and other popular music. The Gin Blossoms are good, as are Hootie and Alanis. I love classical, especially Tchaikovsky and Saints-Saens (but I'm never sure if I'm spelling those names correctly) and I've recently started listening to new age and jazz a lot more often. I can't remember who first mentioned the Seely low court, but I do know that someone (sorry, I tend to be really bad at remembering names, and far too quick with the delete button) was wondering why we don't see much of them. I don't remember which books I saw this in, but I got the impression from one of them (Bedlam?) that the low court have to have a node nearby and that they can't go too far from it. I also seem to have gotten the impression that the nodes are fairly rare. Maybe the scarcity of the nodes is the reason most Seely low court don't go Overhill very often? (Feel free to correct me if my assumptions are WAY off) Did anybody else get this same idea, or did I imagine it? Which book would I choose to have made into a movie?? That's a very hard question. I know that it would NOT be a velgarth. I'd hate to see what Hollywood would do to the companions... I think I would have to choose one of the Di Tregarde books or maybe Born to Run. They probably did, and their teachers probably made them do it IN the proper language! I'm fascinated by languages, because they subtly shape the way you think and what you think about. Consider this - if the language you think in doesn't already have the word(s) to express a particular concept, is it flexible enough to let you create what you need to do that? Does the sentence structure (in effect) require you to think out your sentences *completely* first, and then say them, or can you ramble around? My background has American English, Latin, Spanish (very rusty) a little Japanese, and Laadan. I've picked up a little Russian, a little German, and some Togalog from working in the grocery store. I'm working on the Japanese and Laadan, also Navaho and French. Not trying to hurry on them, have the rest of my life to get them. It does have suggestions for further reading, but Smart suggests that the curious person consult three of his books and he has no other author suggested more than once. This is usually a bad sign in a history text, so I'm assuming it is a bad sign in comparative religions texts. Usually a book without a bibliography and with suggestions for further reading gets put back on the shelf in the library when I'm doing research, because the bibliography shows you the more in depth and hard to find sources that can be lifesavers when you need some good information. In high school we were required to participate in the National History Day competions, so I am very fond of books that can lead me to more sources for my research. I have learned that you get a very biased project if you consult too many (generally means more than three) books by the same author. You have serious problems if you can't find any primary source material too. All this talk about my horrible religion class is depressing (especially since the ordeal is almost over). Ke'leecha asked: >Emily, oh invisible one, >WHY do you need precalculus?? Its evil. As the >(soon-to-be I hope I hope) Goddess of Those Who Hate Calculus, I >shudder that you need it. Of course I need precalculus (and Calc I, Calc II and Calc III, and probably at least one more for good measure ). I'm studying Electrical Engineering and there are things that you simply can't do without calculus, so calculus is a wonderful thing (but that doesn't mean it is easy!). Thank electrical engineers for the fact that you have your lovely computer toy to send email to people with. The difficulty of Calculus is mostly that we don't learn it soon enough and that bits of it seem to make no sense (my dad say's that it may not be elegant but it describes how the world works CORRECTLY!) but there are lots of things that don't make sense. Lady Sophia and several others mentioned that it is easier to learn languages that are similar. I can agree with that whole heartedly because I am fluent in English, I can manage in French, and my Latin is rusty. I can always pick up French again and speak it (though I don't know the grammar very well in French terminology, I can explain it with Latin). And when I started to learn French it was a breeze because I knew how to learn Romance languages. My problem is that I doubt that Karsite, Hardoren, Valdemaran, Rethwellan, Tayledras, and Shin'a'in are all as closely related as English, French and Latin. I would buy Valdemaran and Imperial Tongue being distantly related so that Valdemarans can learn Imperial very quickly and vice versa because the original Valdemarans spoke the equivelant of "Old Imperial Tongue". And due to the past 600 years of semi-cordial relations with Rethwellan, I can believe that a good bit of Rethwellan has crept into Valdemaran. Ditto for Hardorn (Ancar was the exception, not the rule, remember?). Karsite is variously described as "beautiful" and "liquid" so it probably is very different from the other languages in the area. Shin'a'in and Tayledras are probably as brainbusting for Valdemarans as Russian or Chinese are for Americans. I'm not saying that speaking Russian and English is impossible, just very difficult. I have a friend who is fluent in Bulgarian (native language), Russian (she says it's similar), and English (she's working on her slang, otherwise, it's perfect). She also knows French and German... My main problem with the languages in Misty's books is that she never shows the kind of moans and groans about grammar and vocabulary familiar to most people who take a foreign language. She does seem to realize that most people don't get the grammar and flow of a language quite right while they're learning it (there's a scene in BTS near the end while Kero is at the Rethwellan Court). It just doesn't seem realistic for everyone to know more than three languages (especially given the fact that many people never travel very far from their homes). I think that's enough rambling on the subject. I was just wondering if Misty is deliberately moving Valdemar into a (pre-)industrial age, and if she is, how will this affect the Heraldic circle.<< Good question. I was wondering about this, too. There's also a comment in (I think) Arrows, where Talia is massaging someone or is receiving one, and the comment, "You're as tight as bridge cables," arises. This has always piqued my curiosity, because it seemed like the level of technology wasn't that high. What I'm also wondering is, if they really do enter an industrial age, they're going to have major population problems (according to some demographers, near exponential), and then when they hit the post-industrial age (whatever that is, it seems like the U.S., Japan, and Canada, and probably others that weren't exemplified in class have reached it, looking at population growth), the population growth will taper off and steady. Thank electrical engineers for the fact that you have your lovely computer toy to send email to people with. The difficulty of Calculus is mostly that we don't learn it soon enough and that bits of it seem to make no sense (my dad say's that it may not be elegant but it describes how the world works CORRECTLY!) but there are lots of things that don't make sense.<< No offense, but you're a freshman in college in EE and you're in PREcalculus? I mean, we know they don't do orchestras, so how about small close harmony a cappella groups? Anything? My .02 (and ObMisty): As a matter of fact, they ~do~ have such vocal groups in Valdemar. IIRC, in BTS, Kero complains mightily to Talia and Dirk about how different groups mangle the "Kerowyn's Ride" ballad (this is when Dirk loses it, and has to leave the tent because he's laughing so hard, and he doesn't want to do it in Kero's face). re solo: Good luck on getting the solo! My voice isn't that good - I'm ~much~ better as part of the chorus. My range is mostly alto, but I can pinch-hit as soprano, tenor, baritone, or bass (and have!). We did the 'Pie Jesu' from Rutter's Requiem last year in the local church I sing in. It was a real stretch doing the octave bounces, and that blessed F-sharp over high-C was a major pain - the choirmaster had to really get us thoroughly warmed up before the altos could hit that note with any certainty and/or volume! I miss it, though; heard a tape we did of the performance, and we really sounded good! Ah well...let us know how the solo decision goes! In the Arrows trilogy (specifically AotQ) Talia has a _lot_ of trouble with some kids in school. They try to kill her actually. If I remember correctly, someone (Keren maybe) tells her that they're the Blues and to stay away from them if she can.
