May I make a suggestion? My take on it was that Karse reminded me very strongly of Hungarian. This is a lovely language, and the culture is very much like what I imagine Karse to be like. Karal makes some references to his father's beautifully embroidered shirts and vests (have you seen the traditional Magyar embroidery?!?) and they are obviously a culture that places a great deal of importance in horses (Karal's father had a great deal of status--or so I get the impression) and all those warriors with their hawklike faces and such just scream "Hungary!" to me. > Heather, are languages neccessarily only related to culture? I ask this because I was just thinking of Florian, and how he just doesn't feel the same as the other Companions we have seen intimately. Now, I figured the whole Companion thing out with LHM, and read Misty's books in order. But I wonder if open acknowledgement of the companions' nature changes how they seem/feel. Florian is the first since the reincarnation thing was openly acknowledged in print, and I wonder if this may be why he feels different. As I think on this more - perhaps it is just Florian. I have a hard time *seeing* him as a Companion: I see a good natured, gangly, hound dog friendly sort of fellow, with his hair always falling into his eyes. But I think about Gwena ( who is still very musch with us in the Mage Trilogy) and Tantris and Rolan and Yfandes; and they don't seem any less mysterious or special or spirit-ish. So with the one exception, they're as otherworldly as ever. How could they not be? Certainly not Yfandes- gods. I would love to meet a Companion, but Yfandes would scare the hell out of me in person, I think. She would probably scare anyone who wasn't her Chosen- anyone aware of her true nature, at any rate. I don't know why, but I would find her very intimidating, I think Vanyel and even Amberdrake would probably also be a little scary in the flesh, but for different reasons. I think I could get over a little fear with them, but I'm not so sure about Yfandes. I can't for the life of me explain why I feel this way. However, there is also what I like to call "the nose" that identifies people from the Turkic-Greek region to me. Maybe what you call hawklike is what I would call "the nose"? The difference, I suppose, is in things other than the nose. Eyebrows, height of cheek, depth of eyes also help me determine where the persons from. Not to mention the all important skin tone. Ithink it might be BTS, or maybe one of the winds books, but I cant find it now. It was a legend that was, I think, supposed to have happend just after the mage wars, around the time the hawkbrothers seperated from the plains clans. The idea was, if you REALLY need help, show that you really do, I suppose, with an emphasis on VOLUNTARY sacrifice. > Oh, an for the people who are imaging people in their heads, > Vanyel I have no problems with, Talia, however, I have great problems > finding images for. I always form some image of characters as I read, but I usually don't think about it much unless something comes up to challenge my images. I really was a bit surprised at the drawings in my copies of the Wins books, though. None of them seemed quite right to me somehow... Larry Dixon did a fine job on them, but they just don't feel right to me. I think any of these people could be intimidating at first, but I also think they all seem the type to go out of their way to UNintimidate you, if they happen to think you're a decent person, no? And they're certainly all people I would want to think that of me!
