I guess I just figure out where my people could live and why they were living there before I start with the plot. But then again I don't write many stories, I am mostly a poet. I'd thought the Karsites some combination of eastern europe and middle eastern cultures. ****** On the subject of prayer, Jacquelle asked something like, Didn't Teren tell Talia's orientation class why they don't pray going into battle? I think that scene took place in Arrow's Fall when Elspeth is talking to Dirk about Evil and other light matters ;) and Dirk asks her why the priests are forbidden to pray for Valdemar's victory in battle...She then starts thinking *very* hard. Although no answer for the question ever comes up in the books, I'd guess that part of it has to do with the fact that priests are supposed to feel compassion for the poor little grunt soldiers on the other side, too. Also, if some god(dess) could claim responsibility for a Valdemaran victory, would Valdemar then be beholden to Her/Him, thus endangering the government's position of neutrality with regard to religion? I agree with Eric aka Tower's idea that the gods probably want Valdemar to work out its own problems independently... My theory is that if the gods intervene, you have to pay them back, either before the intervention with some form of sacrifice to get their attention, or afterward, with faithfulness. That's how places like Karse & Iftel (not to mention the 3 cultures descended from the Kaled'a'in) end up with one religion dominating the culture; they get some payoff in the form of divine aid, at the expense of spiritual freedom. ****** Dyana wondered if anyone else noticed an analogy between the Alliance's fear of the East Empire & USA's fear of the USSR during the cold war...No, I hadn't thought of that, but it is an interesting idea to play with...Of course, Valdemar doesn't have the luxury to think that it has the only right form of government, since the Empire is a monarchy, too...And Valdemar is much, much smaller than the Empire, while the USA is pretty big. --Lee-- 97jsalaz-+AT+-uor.edu -- www.geocities.com/Athens/4709/ "What time is it?" --Dekker, P. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Nov 1996 17:45:25 -0500 (EST) From: Mat the Cat in Green To: Mercedes Lackey mailing list Subject: a bunch of oneliners braided together Message-ID: > From: Jake > HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHAAAA!!!!! Magic's Pawn p. 215. Later in Magic's Promise, Vanyel uses his "Healing Gift" on Medric to make him suseptible to catching the "spots". Is that the correct incident? When she and Vanyel were coming home, and they were both tired, but they were still marks from Haven--didn't she just growl some remark to Vanyel and Fetch them in leaps all the way back to Haven, or am I thinking of some other time? Anyway, I don't know of any other traits..of course, I also have this vague feeling that I've forgotten something, too. There is only one trait that i can think of that normal Companions have that Grove-born don't- - mortality from age. Hmmm...I just know that I'm forgetting something. Would all the Companions banding together to bring Talia home count as some kind of special traits that they have? Maybe it goes with the Fetching thing. Didn't Kyril get really interested in the Gifts/abilities of Companions after Talia was rescued? He wondered if it was limited to Gwena, Rolan, and Ahrodie, or if all the Companions had something to do with it....which they did, IIRC. I think even Cymry's garland- eating foal helped in bringing Talia home. I suppose that would count as more of an inborn trait than one that appears only when really needed. And to go back to that, from that passage in MPromise, I gathered that Tashir's Companion knew before he Chose Tashir that he [Tashir] would need Mindhealing. any thoughts? I'm going on a bus trip to the Christiana (something like that) Mall. Any interesting stores there? %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Oh one more thing I was at the bookstore today and I asked about Firebird. According to what they told me they have a copy of the book bu thtey can't put it one the shelf yet because it has some kind of street date on it. But as soon as they can sell it, it is all mine. The lady is also goign to call the publisher and seeing if they could sell it sooner that the street date. Ack I almost typed that bad HUngarian word. So does the book thing count as an obMisty? It says that all the channels were open except Healing. THEN, it says the widest extent thing. My thought on the matter was that Misty may have meant it the other way, but misworded herself. Oh, and for any newbies out there. PLEASE don't ask about Van's Bardic Gift. *Please*.... :) ========================================================================== Yay!!!!! My stuff from Firebird finally came today! About time, since I ordered it in the beginning of September. Now there's only the Heathens stuff coming...... I'll agree now that Misty's voice is a *lot* better on the live tape than on HHH. =========================================================================== Really off-topic. I don't think the linguistics would be a problem, after all, they communicate mind-to-mind, and if you can pick up someone's language from their mind, then I would guess you can understand their thoughts. There ARE Companions who have trouble communicating with their Chosen because of blocks and such, but I don't think that language would be a problem at all. Just my thought... Oh me, oh my, another defender, what ever shall I do? ;) Thank you, my new friend. I'm thinking that maybe it was just misworded, since there are other things kind of like that in her books. > Oh, and for any newbies out there. No, then she just took the straight route through the snow instead of the curved route the road took. When she did the Fetching thing was when she was running to drop of Stephen and then back to Vanyel before he did Final Strike. (Oooh. Ouch.) > really needed. "Ghost may yet balance him, if he can regain balance; the stallion is something of a MindHealer." "Vanyel sat bolt upright. :A MindHealer? A Companion? But-:" ":It happens from time to time, : she interrupted, the overtones of her mind-voice telling him clearly that she was very reluctant to speak of it. :It happens when it is needed...." The rest goes on to babble about Tashir's armsmaster and the connection with Jervis and all. Yfandes, pretty much just drops it and Van never has tiem to pick it up or go back to it after that. I wonder if they've talk about that sort of thing since they're now residents in the Forest. ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 933 *********************************
