You know, I woke up this morning to the radio playing Celine and I was immediately struck by how appropriate that song would be for Kero and Eldan. The whole idea of turning your back on a relationship, and refusing to cry, even when you are lying alone at night freezing, and dreaming of your lost love. And then they come back and with a kiss "the flesh and the fantasy" all comes flooding back. But I agree that The Dance would be perfect. > "Standing Outside the Fire" for Van after he > realizes what it means to be a Herald. More to come... Hey, as long as we are putting Garth in, we *have* to find a place for "We Shall Be Free"! That song is a musical version of "There is no One True Way." Other than that, I came up with a few others: For when Talia is first coming to understand her Empathic powers and her ability to comfort others, I think that 10,000 Maniacs' "Trouble Me" would be perfect. And I found the absolutely perfect song for Yfandes and Vanyel: "Yes I Am" by Melissa Etheridge. If you have the text, read it. If you don't and would like it, please email me. Finally, I figured out where to put my favorite piece of dramatic music, "O Fortuna" from Carmina Burana. It should be playing, faintly and gradually, in the background as Van and Stef move up into the pass to face the army of darkness and should come to that wonderful crescendoing final verse as Yfandes rejoins Van and they call down Final Strike. That scene, btw, reminds me very strongly of the death of Imraith-Nimphais(sp?) in GGK's "Darkest Road": when she and Tabor are going to die and she says to him "Only each other, at the last." His legend, his reputation, the stories of "Vanyel Demonsbane", sure - but Van seemed like a very gentle and likeable character. He just didn't have many close ties is all. And 'Fandes seemed kindof like a big mother figure to me. She was solicitous when he needed that, but she kept him in line and was never "easy" on him either. And she'd have killed anyone who hurt him. I think I feel sortof connected to her in that aspect, because I feel that way about my kids. I don't always recognize the music people suggest, but I intend to do my best to at least find the lyrics. I have been racking my brain; I used to be much better at this when I was younger and trying to write myself. But I have a couple of Ideas. I suggest John Hiatt's "Have a Little Faith In Me" as the Darkwind/Elspeth theme. There are places where the song especially fits, but the melody and lyrics fit well enough for that to be "their song". I would also suggest Indigo Girls' "Blood and Fire" for Stefen, when he is in the throes of his lifebond to Vanyel and not being able to convince the latter of his love and his driving need for him... "I am intense I am in need I am in Pain I am in love......" And another part of the song for the lifebond itself:(Van and Stef's in particular) " I am looking for someone who can take as much as I give give back as much as I need and still have the will to live..." Not much, I know, but I hope significant. I am better at linking lyrics to book chapters. Maybe more later. I was just thinking about this and I cannot see how you came up with this idea AND held on to it after SWarning (don't worry, I have a reason that isn't the artificers). And with all the SCAdians, I would've thought you'd have caught it for sure. Two words. Karal's pens. He's Ulrich's secretary right? And he writes with a dip pen, right? But his pens from Karse were metal, right? I'm a caligraphy freak, and metal pens weren't possible in period for the SCA, so they weren't possible if Valdemar had only renaissance tech. I don't have my caligraphy books here at college with me, but IIRC, metal pens didn't happen til Round Hand was cool (late 1800's). Fountain pens were even later. I dunno when the glass pens he mentioned came in, but they seem like they would be even later than metal pens, but not used for caligraphy (I may be wrong about that last, the only glass pens I've ever seen were the sort of nib they used before ballpoints were invented). Seems to me that if you used a glass nib for caligraphy it would rip up the paper worse than a metal or quill nib. Also related to tech level, I think there is a specific ref to printing presses in WoFury. I don't have the book with me, but the ref is either in the bit where Elspeth is looking for spell books, or the bit where Ancar is bragging about how he's got all them nifty spell books before he tries to make the Gate that delivers Falconsbane. It is pretty obvious that Silverfox and Firesong are not and will not become lifebonded, so he does not even consider the possibility. I do not think I know that "Yes I am" piece (maybe I do or else and cannot place it or else it has not made its way to Uruguay), but I definitely agree about the Carmina Burana background to the final confrontation with Leareth. It's my favorite piece of dramatic music as well. I have always sort of imagined instrumental pieces in the background, and I somehow cannot reconcile any modern song with the characters. I pointed out that you could list all the addresses you wanted it sent to in the cc: field, seperated by commas, and send it off once. Thanks for the sheep! Err... woodlark was just busy playing through a bunch of songs for the music thread, and I just thought of a song that might fit. If anybody here is into Drumming, they might know what I mean. In Winds of Change? when we're in the Tayledras vale and everyone's dancing, one of the tunes could be the Haitian tune "Mahi." The Brazilian "Afoxe" would be a blast, too. There's nothing keeping them from seeing their Companions as they are, and I don't think there's really any reason why a Herald who's died should still be kept in the dark about Companions. So as far as Vanyel goes, I think he just knew about Yfandes once he died. I don't think she'd have to tell him about herself as a Companion. Do you suppose that Vanyel was given the option to come back as a Companion and he just decided that he could best serve Valdemar in the Forest? I mean, Van's a perfectionist, workaholic, and a worrywort. That's the perfect recipe for someone who will never sit around on his thumbs trying to figure out what to chat about. Stef/'Lendel would have his hands full trying to calm him down, and make him relax. I can see it now... :) Could you guys e-mail woodlark *privately* if you didn't get her last message? It could just be, however, that we were disconnected for that bit, and the way our arrangement with Auntie Mel works right now, that mail might have been lost. Oh, about the .signature files. Yes, there *is* something in Mel's Guidelines. It's along the lines of, "the recommended length is 4 lines. Stick to it. After the first few times you post, everyone knows who you are. Using a .signature file that is 7-9 lines long is seen as antisocial." Amberdrake seems to think of himself as qualitatively different from a prostitute (and I don't just mean erotic skills), and makes it pretty clear in a couple chapters (with Conn Levas, for example) that he doesn't sleep with clients unless he wants to. In SilverG, the Heighlei go on and on about how lifebonded pairs have eyes only for each other and there's no point in even thinking of a lifebonded person in a sexual way except with regard to his/her mate. That suggests to me that lifebonded pairs are definitely monogamous, and if a lifebonded person can be a kestra'chern, as Amberdrake still is, then any kestra'chern could have a monogamous relationship (assuming sufficient willpower). I think Firesong could simply *ask* Silverfox not to sleep with anyone else; if Silverfox were willing, and if Firesong could manage to trust him to keep that promise, then there shouldn't be any problem on that level. It's the emotional sharing of the kestra'chern profession that I'd expect Firesong to have a problem with --but Ele made that point pretty well already. ****** > Cennydd wrote: > >>>Ok, here is a recycle of an ObMisty: what popular song (from whatever > genre) would you match up to which Misty characters? I think "Chances Are" by Air Supply (apologies to anyone with a thing against Cheesy 80's music) and Eric Clapton's hit ("Would you know my name/If I saw you in heaven?) belong somewhere in LHM. Air Supply's "Making Love Out of Nothing at All" is specifically for Stefen: "I know just how to fake it/And I know just how to scheme/I know just when to face the truth/And I know just when to dream/And I know just where to touch you/And I know just what to prove/I know when to pull you closer/And I know when to let you loose/And I know the night is fading/And I know the time's gonna fly/And I'm never gonna tell you/Everything I gotta tell you/But I know I gotta give it a try" or something like that. For when Dirk realizes Talia loves him, I'd go for "Brunnhilde, heilige Braut..." --Siegfried's last solo in Wagner's Gotterdammerung, which when taken out of context is a gorgeous love song and not depressing at all. ("Brunnhilde, holy bride! Wake up! ...Who has wrapped you in uneasy slumber? Your wakener came; he kissed you awake... Then Brunnhilde laughed in delight at him... Brunnhilde bids me welcome!") Holst's "Mars" would be appropriate for any of the big battle scenes. babbling on at great length, --Lee-- 97jsalaz-+AT+-uor.edu -- www.geocities.com/Athens/4709/ "What time is it?" --Dekker, P. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Nov 96 18:45 EST From: infodyn-+AT+-distrinet.com.uy (Eleonora Scoseria) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Companions Message-ID: >Jacquelle wrote: >I think since they've been in the Forest, well, I think once a Herald >dies s/he automatically figures out what their Companion really is, >either on the way to the Havens, or once they get there. IIRC there is some evidence in the Arrows books when Kris dies and starts saying his companion's name. I do not believe he would be seeing Tantras as a horse-shaped spirit since they all seem to have their human shape once they leave the flesh. >So as far as Vanyel goes, I think he just knew about Yfandes once he died. Sheesh--that must get >pretty boring. There is some evidence at the end og Magic's Price about being given the chance to come back as the Tayledras say it's possible, or going on to the Havens or staying in the forest. However, at least in 'Lendel's case it was not obligatory for him to come back as a Companion, so maybe Van could have returned as a man as well. Or was this an exception since 'Lendel and Van had unfinished business they could not otherwise conclude satisfactorily. About music, I could not place a rather martial piece I always associate with that last battle in BTS and it is that rousing piece from Les Miserables, the one that talks about the songs of angry men. I always felt it went well with the grim determination all the Heralds and Skybbolts feel when they know they will due but are nevertheless cheering because they are doing what they know is right. O,K, 'nough rambling for now. I have all the Magic, Arrows, Winds, Tarma/Kethry, Tregarde series, the first 2 Gryphon books, Sacred Ground, Storm Warning, the first 2 Bardic Voices, the Serrated Edge books and Lammas Night. If I'm missing any others, will someone PLEASE let me know? I adore Vanyel's time period and somehow have ended up with 2 copies of that series. Diana Tregarde is also one of my favorites with Tarma running a close second. Is there a movie on the Heralds being developed just here or commercially? I know that seems a dumb question but my server has a tendency to lock when I try to access the archives of any list, much less this one. Once I think of some appropriate songs that might match, I'll list them. I'm glad I found all of you and will continue to monitor (and put in a word or two) for a long while. ;) Lady Embrace You, Sara Tygriss-+AT+-juno.com sxy00744-+AT+-student.astate.edu ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 934 *********************************
