ST:IV came out better (IMO) than its predecessors (except, of course, ST:III) because it was set, again, in the "real world". I can't remember the name of the Goddess as a whole. Their line of belief is that a full-scale war between the deities has a chance of emerging, as far as *they* know. We know, however, that there are only Kal'enel and Vkandis. For Ylsa and Keren, an orchestral version of "Tiny Dancer" by Elton John might be nice. "And So It Goes" by Billy Joel -- for Kero and Eldan or Elspeth and Darkwind. My bookstore got it in Fri 11/7 and I read it yesterday (Sat). IMO, the book is definitely a keeper. Maybe its because Misty had the fairy-tale as a plot outline to follow, but it is (again IMO) better than _Fire Rose_, mainly because the ending wasn't as rushed. It was a definite planned ending, not one that was read like "Oh, I've head the word limit, let me in this book in 5 pages or less." And to whoever asked, yes it is Hardcover. ---------------------------------- (With tithes to Mat) Since it had been three weeks since my last bookstore visit, it cost me over $200 US to get out. So many new books have come out. Barbara Hambly, Mary Higgens Clark, Sue Grafton's _M is for Malice_, Terry Goodkind's 3rd book _Blood of the Fold_, Nick O'Donohoe's 3rd Crossroads book _The Healing of Crossroads_, of course Misty's _Firebird_ and many, many more. Dean Koontz' new book (A Christmas Poem a la Shel Silverstein) _Santa's Twin_ has some wonderful imagery. It only takes about 10-15mins to read it, so you really don't even have to buy, just read it at the store, but it is worth reading. ------------------------------ On the subject of Piers Anthony: I read _A Spell for Chameleon_ when it first came out and loved. Since then I have read everything he has written, but have been disappointed with the Xanth books since _Isle of View_. Of course, Piers himself, in one of his Author's Notes, said that several of the Xanth books were written mainly because the publisher said we'll give you X amount of $$ to write X more Xanth books, and he really didn't want to at the time, so he took reader suggestions for plots, characters and puns and just threw a couple (or 5 or 6) books together. I was really suprised when Piers was mentioned by people, they only mentioned Xanth, Modes, Incarnations and other recent works. Bio of Space Tyrant was also mentioned. However my personal favorites, and reasons for keeping on reading him, are _Mute_, _Battle Circle_ (which led me to Sun Tzu), _Orn/Omnivore/Ox_, the Tarot books and the Cluster books (these books convinced me to further study of Tarot as something other than an amusement). It saddens me to think that he is being judged by his later Xanth novels. It's as if someone said "I don't like Misty, because the Storm books weren't that good." You need to read his early works to really get a feel him. (Blenders lined up and ready to make daquiri's as the conconuts come flying in). deniz said: >His non-Xanth books, OTOH, are much >better. IIRC, Agnoma is the horsey huntress-type, Agnira is the Crone, and Agnetha is the motherly one. The statue in the temple at Kero's home had a statue of Agnetha mooning over her twin babies with flowering vines and ripe grain all over the place, with the other two aspects represented only by alternating snowflakes and hoofprints on the pedestal. There's only the one Holderkin goddess; Talia was horrified at the idea that she might end up in a cloister, sworn to silence for the rest of her life. /\/\/\/\/\ Esmerelda wrote: > A-ha! I'm new to the list here - i've been reading Misty's book since a co-worker lent me the Arrows trilogy many moons ago. Since then I've bought all of her books as soon as they came out - a couple disappointments, but on the whole I've been pleased with the quality of her books. I just finished Storm Breaking and was reasonably satisfied with it except for one thing. If I remember correctly, didn't past books refer to the Iftel 'Goddess'? I'm a bit disappointed by the apparent existence of only 2 deities now. My favorite books of hers are probably the ones with Tannim (umm. That is the title I was trying to think of! "Battle Circle" was a brilliant book! So was "Mute." Two other early books that he did that were quite good were "Race Against Time" and "Macroscope." The latter of these two goes down as one of my all-time favorite surreal books. I can remember running across it as a kid and spending a couple days sort of drifting through it. I agree that if the only thing you know about PA is his Xanth and post-Xanth stuff, you have missed something special. Even now, he manages to amaze on the rare occasion. If you get a chance, read "Tatham Mound." It is excellent. I once did a report on it for an NatAm anthropology course. My prof was quite favorably impressed with the book. They're a showcase for as many puns as he and his readers can put in. The puns from NIGHT MARE still turn my stomach (Boot Rear? Come on. *sigh*) He's.. he's not good. His Xanth stuff is just not humorous to me. Of course, then again, I don't like Robert Asprin either. I go for a more... academic humor, like Terry Pratchett. I still read Piers Anthony every NOW and then, when I need something mind-numbing to thumb through. It's the SAME stuff, book after book after book... *looking over what everyone else said.* Yep. Well well WELL. I tend to open a book, and *POW* be dead to the real world until I finish it. I tend to have a kind of "movie-like" view on things. If the main character is walking down an alley, for example, I'll see a 3/4 view of the alley, with her walking down it. Usually they're overhead views. Or side. I'm cursed with a 360 degree surround sound full color imagination at times. It gets me so caught up in a book that I'll actually shake with rage at a scene or be driven to the brink of tears.. (hey.
