That's very interesting, and something I hadn't heard before. I am a speed reader, and I've found that, at least when I am reading, I somehow read phrases rather than a word at a time, and I do definitely form images as I go, but sometimes rather than visual images it will be "images" in some other sensory mode - touch, smell, taste, whatever. I guess images isnt the right word for those but I'm drawing a blank on waht would be more appropriate. Sometimes I subvocalize, sometimes I don't - but I have a rough time reading anything of length aloud to someone because my habits are so firm on this that I have to work at slowing down. I never realized this had been studied though! That gives me something to think about, thank you. Sorry that this seems to be off topic but.... it cuaght my attention and I put my two cents worth in. :) > Heather wrote (re Piers Anthony): > > I felt like the couple of Anthony books I read were gimmicky. Is _that_ what that's supposed to be? (I'm presuming we're talking here about the song which has lines in it along the line of "Mr Morton is the subject of my sentence, and what the predicate says, he does...") I tell you, that song nearly had me in fits while I was out shopping on Saturday. I was in the middle of a longish conversation about Babylon 5 (what else? :)) as we wandered into the Warner Brothers shop, and that song was playing. The Mailing List ------------------------ Version 2.0, May 24th 1995 Compiled by Melanie Dymond Harper New in version 2.0: Rewritten to reflect change of site. Added information about 'POSTPONE' setting. Changed feedback address. Swapped bibliography and administrative parts of the FAQ (admin now part 1, bibliography now part 3) New in version 1.4: External group information removed (now in part 5 of FAQ) New in version 1.3: changes to external group information. New in version 1.2: information about other ML-related groups (AOL, Genie & USENET); explicit address for feedback. New in version 1.1: information about release form; way of getting release form; 'new in ...' list. 1. What is this list anyhow? ---------------------------- This is a mailing list for discussion of the works of Mercedes Lackey, including both her fantasy and non-fantasy work, either solo or in collaboration with other authors. It is currently unmoderated. 2. How do I subscribe to the list? ---------------------------------- Send a mail message to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with subject blank and message body SUBSCRIBE MERCEDES-LACKEY your name If you have problems with this, contact the list owner (see below). 3. How do I unsubscribe to the list? ------------------------------------ Send a mail message to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with subject blank and message body UNSUBSCRIBE MERCEDES-LACKEY Again, if you have problems with this, contact the list owner. 4. How do I send messages to the list? -------------------------------------- Messages for the list at large should be sent to mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk (rather than to the list processor address) There is no requirement to follow any threads that may already be in progress. Feel free to start discussion on anything you like -- as long as it's at least vaguely relevant. Flaming, and rudeness in general, is strongly discouraged. 5. I'm getting too much mail from the list. Is there any way to cut it down? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes. Assuming that you do not want to leave the list altogether, mail the list processor (listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk), subject blank and message body SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL DIGEST If you would prefer not to see copies of anything that you have sent to the list, use the following message body instead; SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL NOACK (Note that these two options are mutually exclusive. To return to normal mail from either of them, use the message body SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL ACK instead.) If you will be absent for some time, you may wish to consider the POSTPONE setting. This is like NOMAIL for lists run under Listserv; you remain subscribed to the list, but do not receive mail from it until you specifically request to start receiving mail again. To do this, send mail to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with message body SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL POSTPONE - to cancel it, use one of the options above (ACK, NOACK, DIGEST). Do not forget the 'MAIL' part of the command - it won't work without it. 6. I've written this really great story in one of Misty's universes. Should --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I post it to the list? ----------------------- No, please don't. Reliable information (Judith Louvis who runs Queen's Own, the offline Misty fan club), indicates that you MUST get permission from Misty, in writing, before writing fan fiction in Misty's universe(s). Since I, as list owner, have no way to verify that you have received such permission, a decision has been taken not to allow posting of stories on the list. What you do between yourselves is, of course, entirely up to you. The release, however, is not valid for online fiction, only for printed fiction. As far as I am aware (as of 6th July '94) there is no way of getting permission to release fiction in Misty's world(s) online. A copy of the release for printed work is available from the listowner on request (private email; please don't post requests to the list). 7. Who is the list owner, anyway? --------------------------------- All problems, or queries about the running of the list, should be directed at Melanie Dymond Harper; mel-+AT+-herald.co.uk -or- mel-+AT+-servalan.demon.co.uk The second address should only be used if mail to the first address does not get a reply (this most likely means either the site is down for some reason or that I'm away - if the latter, the second address probably won't help either). Do _not_ send problems and such to the list at large. If it's something I've done, or not done, they won't be able to help you! I will try to announce any absences of mine in advance, so that the list members know if problems are likely not to be solved quickly. Any feedback on this post cheerfully received at mel-+AT+-herald.co.uk or mel-+AT+-servalan.demon.co.uk. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (end part 1 of 5) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Nov 1996 14:22:56 GMT From: Melanie Dymond Harper To: mercedes-lackey Subject: remembrance Message-ID: <199611111422.OAA02370-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk> Ailsa said: > I've been wondering over the weekend, do the Heralds have anything like > Remembrance Sunday (yesterday) where they remember all those who have fallen > in battle with say, 2 minutes silence, or laying flowers at a memorial site? > > Sort of on that topic, the Royal British Legion is trying to get people to > have a 2 min silence on Armistice Day (11th November) at 11am, as well as the > Sunday. I'm poor right now but I'll buy it if it is good. Anyway, I just wanted to brag about Heather Alexander...so I'd better get back to work! That's today. Sovvan night does seem to me a combination of Veterans' Day and Memorial Day.(that's when we remember everyone else) -Vrondi a.k.a Chrys Amy Dean, a.k.a Free Bard Oriole. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "To light a candle is to cast a shadow..." -"A Wizard of Earthsea" by Ursula K. Nope. The thought of battle just...bothers me somehow-- but not as much as having to make a judgement at a trial. My mother and I found a pettern(as in sewing) for a Kinsale cloak from Irelan. This company goes and researches the time periods of their costumes and makes them as authentic as possible. even down to suggesting what colours/types of fabric would have been used. Well, It's been sitting in the closet for a couple of years, but it looks as though I might get the finished product for Christmas! Yay! In the archives it seems that everyone thinks that Valdemar has renaissance level technology. And with all the SCAdians, I would've thought you'd have caught it for sure. Two words. Karal's pens. He's Ulrich's secretary right? And he writes with a dip pen, right? But his pens from Karse were metal, right? I don't have my caligraphy books here at college with me, but IIRC, metal pens didn't happen til Round Hand was cool (late 1800's).<< Y'know, being somewhat of a calligraphy nut myself as well as a SCAdian/Faire-junkie, I had picked up on that. But I reasoned it out sortof like this: While Velgarth technology may parallel our own in some ways - it *is* a different world so it follows that it wouldn't parallel it completely. At some point, in SW, someone makes the comment that the ecological impact of steam boilers, coal mining, railroads, etc might not be such a hot concept. I forget who, and couldn't find the page. They've got indoor plumbing, their metals technology seems fairly well advanced - advanced enough for some intrepid artificer to invent pen nibs? It could very well be that, the ecological cost of some technologies has kept them at a slightly lower level, but not in every area. IMHO, that is. Anybody? Also, just a thought, but on our world, the Church tended to burn folks like artificers - any original thinkers. Obviously, most of Velgarth doesn't have that issue to contend with, causing their technology to evolve differently. What kind of person would advocate rape?<< It never ceases to amaze me that sick little frat boys like this exist, and manage to find women willing to procreate with them after graduation. Don't try to get it - these guys are sick, power-hungry wastes of sperm and painful hours in labor. Look at the rape trial happening right now with Alex Kelly. The guy is probably going to get away with it, after 10 years of R&R in Europe. The only way women will ever change this is to find power-within to challenge the whole power-over mindset. Starhawk talks about this in _Spiral Dance_ a bit, we must take action whenever something like this happens. Don't let them get away with it. I am a fairly dedicated Healer, in life and in my fantasy life. I think I'd end up Serving just as faithfully, but in Healer's Greens, not Whites! :-) Here's a question: If someone started circulating an anti-woman list like that around the 3 Collegiums, how do you think the individual Heralds and characters in ML's books would deal with the miscreants?
