If it was just a letter, rather than being acted on.... I would say a long time with a mindhealer at the least. It goes without saying that a Herald would not even THINK in such a way, or he'd be repudiated in no time flat. If it was anyone who knew, say, Talia, I think there'd be some personal action going on to ensure this person COULD never do such a thing again. Do you suppose a strong mindhealer could put a block in someone's mind so that if they THOUGHT anything along these lines they would get a severe physical reaction? Say a seizure? Me, I'd want to be a lot harsher than that (a compulsion for selfmutilation in response to such a thought) but I think the Heralds might not go for that. I'm in the USA and I have never seen another cover except the SFBC 3 in 1 edition. Are the covers different in other countries (my set has the foil, but not the embossed covers)? Of course, I generally don't do more than glance at LHM in the stores cause I already have it and my dog hasn't tried to eat it (silly frup chewed on my hardback WoFury!). He also eats library books... I keep hoping that I'll be lucky like Vrondi and find a copy of S&S 3 somewhere... My fave used book store at home always has back issues of the others (new even!), but never, ever that one. I think that it must've had a bunch of authors that people collect write really awesome stories, combined with a small print run... DawnRain (?) wrote: >That, and meeting Cinthliss, and Fox. That tells part of how Tanimn met Chinthliss at least (FX/ Saski Berith is just plain wierd). And from that it is pretty clear that there are problems with his parents about the magic... And from your post it sounds like you think there's only one Di book, was it a typo (cause there are three published, two in limbo)? About the pen nibs, does anyone know if they knew how to make semiflexible steel that could be made into very thin sheets, in the Renaissance? My main problem with Karal's pen nibs is that it seems like a small advance, but it isn't all that simple technologically. He uses at least 2 kinds of pretty advanced pen nibs in a mostly late Renaissance technology level. From the description of his writing tools, it sounds like he was using a "ballpoint" pen nib and a dip pen, and I'm not sure when that nib first appeared (I can only document it back to about 1930). That little ball on the end of the pen is probably not hard to make if you know how to do it, but mass producing it would be very expensive. When I say that that ball is little, I mean that it's the kind of detail a goldsmith or silversmith would do. And steel isn't very malleble and ductile compared to gold and silver... I don't know much about glass working (either) but it seems like it may well be more difficult to make. Of course, Venetian glass looked impossibly difficult to me when I found out when the started making that. The glass seems more probable with a Renaissance level of technology. Anyone else know something about the disciplines in question? Emily the invisible PS I'm sorry to be so picky about the pennibs but they really bug me. It would be easier to change the tech level up a bit to account for them then determine that they could be done with the tech level that Valdemar feels like to us. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Nov 1996 14:19:50 -0500 From: Soljan-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Anthony/Priestess/visualizing/images/Herald?/Little fall of rain Message-ID: <961111141948_1982628028-+AT+-emout14.mail.aol.com> KC wrote: << I was really suprised when Piers was mentioned by people, they only mentioned Xanth, Modes, Incarnations and other recent works. Whatever thoughts go on just kind of seem like they're there. I don't find myself looking out the person's eyes or anything. But it isn't a very clear movie. I don't have definite ideas of the characters appearance. The surroundings are clearest, and I often find myself stopping to *see* the area, and place the characters. I cry a lot, which I've said often. The full color thing with me is more of a 5 senses thing. I can see, touch and hear what's going on. Taste and smell usually don't come in much though. Sometimes I'll find myself rocking back and forth to the music described. Kerry said: >>The conclusion? Well, kind of. I think that people think in images and words, depending on the subject. As for mindspeech, IIRC, those with weak mindspeech can only send images and pictures, and not words. That's what leads me to believe that words are the more disiplined part. Kat asked: >>OBmisty: If you could do so, would you become a Herald, knowing all that you do, about what it entails and the sacrifices you might have to make in the name of Valdemar? << I think I would. Even though I know that it would be very likely to be a difficult and short life, it would be memorable. I think that I would be very happy as a Herald. Heralds seem connected to each other in a way that doesn't really exist here. I think that would be wonderful. Plus, to have a Companion would be a joy in itself. To always know that there is someone who cares for you, and loves you, no matter what you do, unless it is something against the Herald code. It would probably mean that I would have a Gift, which would be great. I think that all the positives of being a Herald would cancel out the negatives when if it came down to the decision. Fluff #2: I got a new computer as an early 21st birthday present. It's a gorgeous little notebook job, a Pentium with Windows95 and the whole shebang. I'm thrilled to death with it, and I can even use the funky little stick mouse in the middle of the keyboard, which my father didn't seem to think I had a chance of mastering. Envy me. ObMisty #1: I have this theory that Amberdrake is mainly Larry's character, which would explain why he can visualize Amberdrake especially well, and draw Amberdrake especially well (there's more to the theory than that, though). I'm usually fairly indifferent to his art, but I still think he deserves stars in his crown for "Amberdrake Alone," which is one of the most evocative, lovely line drawings I've ever seen. Loved that picture. ObMisty #2: Sorry, but I refuse to assign "All Coming Back to Me Now" to any Misty character. They just don't deserve it. It's so openly, happily erotic and sensual, and none of Misty's couples have enough sexual chemistry to carry it off. And the problem with "Ghost" for Vanyel is that the relationship was obviously not an idyllic one ("the last truce we ever came to in our adolescent war") like Van & Lendel's was. I think "Ghost" works a bit better for Diana and Davy. Try to give Garth Brooks a break. I'm not tremendously fond of country music (except Reba McEntire, and that new little girl, wossername, she's got a gorgeous voice), but I really like Garth as a person. First of all, he went on Muppets Tonight and cheerfully acted silly in front of the entire country, which I really think is a mark of character. Second, does anyone remember the flap he caused by standing up for the gay community? Can't recall the name of the song, but it was one of those The World Should Be a Better Place songs, and one of his lines or verses or something was about a day "when everyone will be free to love whoever they want," (sorry, not exact quote, I don't think). Country stations went nuts and pulled the song, people were furious with him, all his managers wanted him to re-record the song and take that out. He flatly refused and said it was there because he meant it and he wanted it there. I still didn't run out and buy all his music, but I have to say I admire him. And I don't have the luxury of complaining about the accents. I live in central Missouri, and a lot of us talk like that. Can't get away just by turning off the radio ObMisty #3: It's funny how many people were under the mistaken impression that Kris was blonde and Dirk was brunette. I was, too, actually until I found out during the Florian discussion that it wasn't so. Do we just expect the goodlooking one to be blonde? But what about tall dark and handsome? I wonder what's to be made of this. ObMisty #4: I don't think that's what she was talking about, but the SFBC omnibus does have a different cover picture of Vanyel. I like it. Though my favorite Vanyel picture is the one on MPrice. And if anyone has that print, I'm in the market to buy it. ObMisty #5: You know, I never used to think I would want to be a Herald. I still don't really *want* to be a Herald. But I've become more and more convinced as time goes by that if I were offered the option, I'd have to take it. I wouldn't feel right refusing; every awful thing that happened from then on, I'd lay awake at night wondering if I could have changed the outcome if I'd said yes. But I'm not sure I would ever make a good soldier. I think I'm capable of killing, but not of remaining whole in heart afterward. When I first found out about this years ago, I was so pissed then. This is a boy whose parents told him to flee the country and paid inordinate amounts of money for him to live the high life in Europe! How could any one run away from a trial? If you're not guilty, then the judicial system will work, why should you feel the need to run away from something that you did not do? If he gets off on this first charge, he still has a second trial for the second girl he raped (sorry, allegedly raped) maybe they'll get the a**hole then. People were talking about a good word when they hear the awful things that some peoples' minds can come up with, how about scared? Scared that people might start believing these horrible ideas. Fear that there is nothing one can do about it? And impotent anger that the people's necks are not in your hands? ---- About visiting Valdemar. What I'd like to do, is to go and talk to the bards and learn their music and maybe travel with a journeyman to document his beginnings in the realm of music. I'd also like to kind out what they would think of Prokofiev's Romeo and Julliet. --- Obmisty: When I read V&H, I really get confused by the picture on the cover. Jadrek was the one who gave the shin'a'in the blond hair. The book says over and over that Kethry has amber hair. Last time I checked, amber was red/brown. Didn't Talia's evil brother, Jadus(?), have blonde hair? and didn't she compare Kris and Jadus on more than one occasion, concerning their good looks? It was only mentioned once, iirc, that Kris had black hair, so maybe we all just sub-conciously (like my spelling?) gave Kris blonde hair. I even knew he had black hair, but I still saw him with a dirtyish-blonde look. And I just couldn't picture Dirk with hair the color of straw(?) Was that how it was described? I picture him with a little darker shade of blond, too. Of course, when I think of straw, I think of whatsherface that spun the straw into gold (not rapunzel, but something like that),--bright yellow for me. Anyway, jsut my little theory. Feel free to riddle it with bullets . I don't think I could actually be a Bard, since I don't have two out of the three, I only have one. I'm not sure if I could be a Healer or not.. I am not very good a Healing, but I do what I can. I wonder what's to be made of this. Add me to those ranks. I haven't a clue what made me think Kris was blond. I don't suppose there's a description of Kris somewhere where Misty blew the color, a scene that was so memorable that that was the description that stuck? Heaven knows I've done that enough times in my own writing (I won't even talk about what I've done to eye color ;->!). So many people had the misimpression, it would be interesting to figure out what caused it. > Danya ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Nov 1996 19:25:38 -0500 From: mishi To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Solid Fluff, no redeming value.
