And the problem with "Ghost" for Mostly I agree with you (that's why I said it belongs to Jamie and Clare in my head). I sort of think that it might work for Kero and Eldan, maybe. If they played the relationship up a bit in this movie we've cast time and again, it might work. But I just reread BTS, and I thought that the biggest problem was that Kero came off as a woman who liked sex and felt like she couldn't reasonably go after it (responsible leaders don't sleep around my foot). And Eldan certainly had no problems with having sex. I think Misty is still writing the series for teenaged girls (guess she oughta take a look at her readership...) and so she keeps all the sex really low key. Of course the one thing that most teens want is to find out about sex... Jacquelle said: >You know, I have a theory on why a lot of us see kris with blonde >hair. maybe it works, maybe not. Didn't Talia's evil brother, >Jadus(?), have blonde hair? and didn't she compare Kris and Jadus on >more than one occasion, concerning their good looks? This makes sense to me, but I don't see Kris with blond hair. Generally I pick dark hair for guys unless told otherwise in the text (Dirk gives me fits, he's blonde and blue eyed, my least favorite). I just like guys with dark hair. In fact, I tend to pick dark (or red) hair for both genders unless stated otherwise. The only reason I can think of is Hershey (my hometown) has loads of Italian people even today, and if a girl is blonde she's non native or dying her hair (evil gryn). The translation is close enough, though "Really" is probably a better translation 'cos it's used both as a question "fair dinkum?" and a statement "fair dinkum". Privately, if you need to, but I'm confused. Anthony just has a tendancy in some books to get a bit tacky with the sex scenes, eg in some of the later Cluster books ("Man possessing alien body has sex with Alien.", "Alien in different alien body has sex with alien."). That's not bad per se', but it just feels as if he throws them in for either his own gratification or as a gratuitious sex scene. Same with his pulp Adept series - man has sex with feminine robot, man has sex with female in alien shape.. yada yada yada. Vanilla, phobically hetero & generally uninspired. Suffice it to say, even back then as a rabidly curious 14 yr I skimmed those scenes as "blegh". Don't get me wrong, the man can write, but he should know his own limitations and steer clear of sex scenes. Mat wrote: > > From: Kerry Mealing > > OOOh. Mat! Anyway, here goes: The Cornell Misogynists: Can we build a bridge, get over it and move on? While I do not like the fact that some people felt the need to express sentiments of this sort, I also don't particularly like ready the truly nasty-spirited vituperations that I have being seeing on this list as a response. The greatest and most lasting evil that the Cornell list generates is not the inspiration to evil acts. It is the tarnish that accrues to the souls of good people who read the list and then sink into a wallow of hate and nastiness in response. So far, I have seen several people on this list who have let this evil corrupt them to the point that they are willing to deny the basic humanity of these guys and wish all sorts of horrible fates upon them (I think several people have endorsed madness?). *climbs on his soapbox* Hate is not good! Nothing justifies it, nothing excuses it. It is a horrible weight that binds the human spirit like a chain. It cannot ever come to any good. I don't know how to express what I want to say. The human condition is full enough of pitfalls and entanglements of the spirit. We don't need to run out and embrace them. It is so easy to hate, because it takes no effort; it will just consume you if you let it. It is so much harder to feel love in the face of evil, to look at something horrid and twisted and feel compassion, but it is also much better for us. A person doesn't write lists like the Cornell list because they are happy, or well-adjusted, or full of joy. They write those lists because they are bound by hate, twisted of spirit, and full of rage and pain. For those of you who have been advocating extreme retaliation and have been so vitriolic in your condemnations, think about how you felt when you made those statements, think about the rage and pain and fear that inspired you, and then think about living your entire life with those feelings and others even worse. Surely, you can feel some compassion for someone in that kind of torment? I hope so. Because, if you can't break free of the hate, if you can't feel compassion for the terrible frailty of human nature, then you *will* end up living in that darkness, because once hate has a grip on you it just keeps growing. *climbs off soapbox* Hmmmm. This ran way longer than I intended. Its just that the tenor of recent posts has frightened me. The scariest evil of all is evil in the hearts of good people. Anyway, on to the second subject, which is actually Misty related. The whole Kris and Dirk thing: I know exactly why I have always visualized Dirk as being dark-haired. I have always pictured him as a young Robert Davi (for the non-US types, the most likely role you would have seen him in is the drug-czar villain in the Bond film with Timothy Daly(?)). Well, that and this guy I used to see at one of the local clubs, who I nick-named (not to his face, of course) "Ordinary Guy" because he was so plain that he was sexy. The key point is that both RD and Ordinary Guy have black hair. As for Kris, I think that my reaction to him (thinking he was blond) was due to the fact that he was described as "so perfect they [his looks] didn't seem to be real" (AotQ, p. 102) and "angelically-beautiful" (AotQ, p. 308). Although it says that he had "raven hair" (AotQ, p. 102), that just never stuck, because I visualize unreal beauty and angels as blond (ever since I saw Emmanuelle Beart in _Date with an Angel_ and Arielle Dombasle in anything). Oh well. If you really want to talk about a weird mix-up, am I the only one who can*not* think of Altra as male/masculine? No matter how many little reminders the text provides, Altra remains obdurately female in my mind. The crowd of worshippers shuffled their feet shyly, murmuring. A few dared to address the God; two deities also spoke to Him. Lightning flickered. Then a small, round, charcoal-and-mist striped cat wearing gold-rimmed spectacles uncurled itself from someone's ankles and paced forward a little. "O Your Worshipfulness, I cannot ask to be your cleric, for I am new-come, and not known to you, and not very funny much of the time. Yet I have always been one of Yours, and am fond of you for your chosen domain, your book-in-progress, and your multiple *giggle*s. Ducking its head as humbly as it knew how, the cat placed on the ground before the God a 1 1/2-inch long catnip "mouse." "Know, O Great Giggly One, that this mere bit of cloth-wrapped catnip is no worthy gift, but is all that I have, a Medicine Bag inherited from my ancestors the Big Cats, who inherited it from the Great Hunter, who received it from Bast. When one plays with it, one can go on spiritual journeys where Ordinary Things reveal their Secrets, and Secret Things become Mice. I beg Thee to accept it, and to consider my suit--" the tail perked up appealingly--"O please! Obmisty the second: Regarding the pro-rape remarks from Cornell (I've seen the whole list and it's so bad I can't take it in)-- I think Heralds would also deal with the offenders with some unofficial shunning (I mean, in addition to more proactive measures such as suggested by y'all). (How's that for diction-- "proactive" and "y'all" in the same sentence!) Obmisty the third: re Kris' hair, it may be a name association thing. To me, all variations on "Chris" just sound blonde, while "D" names are for people with dark hair.
