If he had big, strong, graceful hands too.....) Matt, I have original editions of LHM, and they have embossed covers and foil on the covers ; they are kind of falling apart after so many reads (and I am *careful* with my books) and I can see the silver..... I am about to replace them because it hurts me to see them in such sad condition, but I think I may keep the old ones because they are original. These are the only covers I've ever seen. As to being a Herald: I am perfectly happy being what I am, a Shin'a'in horse healer. I have duties and my Goddess that are far more binding. The most attractive part of being a Herald for many of us is the love and closeness of the Circle, but I have that already in my Clan. And the horses......and I wouldn't have the dilemma of war and killing, which goes entirely against my nature. I can take care of myself and the children perfectly well, and in certain very unlikely circumstances, all defensive, I could kill, but *I* would need a Healer after, and not for my physical self. I agree with what others have said though, that what sets one apart to be Chosen is the capability to *become* the kind of person who puts everything ahead of their own good. I've said I don't have trouble imagining them, but really for me it's almost as if I *have* to have a mental image of the character, plus scenes, other characters. etc. I have this need to visualize everything, and I've been doing that for so long that it isn't a problem. Though, I must admit, Misty's description has made it extremely difficult to imagine Dirk, I just can't see him as she describes him, she should have been more general, and left specifics up to the reader, IMHO, of course . Oh, and PoV, for me seems to be from first person, however I always have an image of that character as well, I guess it's more like a movie scene actually, like I'm there and watching, but invisible. ============================================================= > Kit (who could come up with some creatively vicious punishments to fit > the crime...) I don't think there's really a need to say it, might offend the more sensitive listmembers, you know. :) Ooops, just read an objection to the reactions, so I'd better post a disclaimer (?). This isn't meant to be hateful. it's just that being a woman, the mere *idea* of rape is so horrible, and, yes, viscious and hateful, that it provokes a strong response. Not that I'm saying that men can't understand, I know they can, and that it does indeed happen to them too, it's just that the number of male rape victims is quite small compared to that of women (if this is wrong, feel free to correct me, but please, be polite, I don't intend any offense). I don't truly hate those boys, but I do believe that they need to get theirs, but I *know* that eventually they will. What goes around, *will* come back around, and knock them on their butts, hopefully knocking some sense and enlightenment into them as well. There, I hope that everyone understands what I'm saying, I have tried to make this as clear as possible so as to avoid misunderstandings. ============================================================= Kat wrote: > Magewars? Actually, I do visualize with music too, for example, (all Loreena McKennit fans out there ought to recognize this) in Loreena McKennit's song "All Soul's Night" I *see* everything she describes, the people dancing around the bonfires etc., this is probably beside the point, but those images really strike a chord with me. I'd rather be a Healer-- y'know, quiet, helpful, but domineering when necessary. [Briana wrote:] Lee, I was thinking about that. Fighting is not something that I thonk I could deal with (mostly harming others, no matter what the cause). But other than that I would enjoy any of the gifts. The moment I got into the Magic series I fell in love with the whole idea (as I suppose the rest of you did :> ). [Lee replied:] Yeah, the Gifts would probly be fun. It's just that I agree with Vanyel's position--If you got the Gift, then you gotta use it for the greater good. (Or, to put it in a deist way, "What you did well, that was what God wanted of you"--Lois McMaster Bujold said that in one of her books). I loved Vanyel first for his angst, second for his ability to love (even if he was an idiot), and third for his ethics. [Briana answered:] Even though this is personal (I mean between 2 good friends) what you just said I think you should post to the list. You have such a knack for writing, I envy you much . [Lee interrupts:] bri, no modesty! modesty is BAD! especially when you compliment me! [ducking cocoanuts] [Briana continued:] And I agree, IF I had the Gift and I were chosen, (that's a big if) I know I would do it - the sense of duty thing, you know. All of the aabove are things that I envy in people (or rather are things thatI want for myself). "domineering when necessary" ... an interesting phrase. [Lee explained:] I was thinking how bossy the Healers all seem to get when they doubt their patient's will to cooperate. Or when there's an emergency, like the plague of snow-fever in Arrow's Flight. [Briana replied:] True. I know the feeling. Emergencies change people (mostly for the better I think). At least that's what I found. I didn't know we'd grown. I won't tell you the copyright date on my edition of the Known World Handbook, 'cept to say that it's old. Really, really old. I haven't been truly *active* for a few years, just hanging out on the fringes of Cynagua and I'm currently lost in Siber. . . er, I mean, Caid. So - *woops!* *silly me!* Thanks for the gentle correction, and boy do I feel sheepish! See what happens when you run off and work faire for a few years, instead of going to barony meetings? Okay, Heather was best friends with my older sister back when they were both teenagers. My sister has all of these tapes of Heather's music, back before it was *Heather's Music*, which are just SITTING there, which she won't give ME! I got to see Phoenix when they played the Red Barn at Northern Faire back ages and ages ago - what an amazing musician. obMisty, obMisty, obMisty. . . er, well, oh! oh! I know - er, are Misty's songbooks just the lyrics and general chord arrangements, or is it actual sheet music? I play the Celtic harp, and really want some new music! Being the Les Miz freak I am, I have to correct that. Those two lines come from two separate songs, and neither of them are "A Little Fall of Rain." The "pavement shines like silver" bit is from "On My Own," and the "tigers come at night" line is from "I Dreamed a Dream." I see how one could confuse them, as they're both massively depressing solos by female leads sung shortly before they die. Being in the SCA only costs your life savings if you're a fighter! Or a serious practitioner of most arts and sciences. Or go to a lot of events. You *can* go broke in the SCA, but you can also avoid it, with a bit of creativity and a lot of good luck. Okay, Emily, now you have me all curious. Send me your escapism flame privately, I'm dying to know what in specific upset you so badly. At the very least it might make you feel better to air out your feelings. We don't need to scare the rest of the list with it, though. Regarding "All Coming Back to Me." I see where you get the Vanyel idea, but I can't say that I really care for it. First of all, there are lines in the song that you can't stretch and wiggle to fit Van and Lendel, no matter how hard you try. Textevd? Of course. I finished crying in the instant that you left And I can't remember where or when or how And I banished every memory you and I had ever made As we have discussed at some length, for good or for ill, Vanyel did not at any time banish anything at all concerning that relationship, nor was there one clean break and then coldness, a la: But you were history with the slamming of the door And I made myself so strong again somehow And I never wasted any of my time on you since then But, what I think is more telling is that the song is obviously about people who break up after a tumultuous relationship, not an idyllic relationship ended by unforseen circumstances. There were those empty threats and hollow lies And whenever you tried to hurt me I just hurt you even worse And so much deeper So I guess, yes, I like the chorus for Vanyel, but the verses just end up confusing the issue. I'm feeling a little purist on this issue for some reason. As for the point I raised about it being too sexually-charged for any Misty couple. Stef and Vanyel *do* come about as close as I think she gets to sexual tension. You have to understand, I'm speaking totally subjectively here. I tend to write highly-charged, intense, and very sexual romantic relationships, and it's what I enjoy reading, too. Misty falls so far short that it's funny. There are some very good moments between Vanyel and Stefen, but they seem more moments than characteristics of their whole relationship. It's really a more emotional/intellectual relationship, seasoned by the fact that both men are deeply attractive. The song seems to me to describe a couple whose sexual heat is every bit as overwhelming as their intense feelings for one another. It's really more like my characters than Misty's -- reminds me in fact of Jordan, who after many, many years of marriage looks back on his relationship with his husband and describes it as "the heat and thunder and orgasm of being in love with Korovich." This is not something I would expect to hear Stefen say about Vanyel, which is what I mean when I say that they don't have a highly sexual relationship. Not that I'm criticizing the Vanyel-Stefen relationship. It's different, but for them that likes that kind of thing, it's exactly the kind of thing they'd like. I just think "All Coming Back to Me Now" is less appropriate for their relationship. Is Stef highly sexual? I don't know. I'm still bitter about him sniveling for forgiveness because he was sexually experienced. He seemed pretty physical, but if he really came to regret it later, maybe he wasn't as much so as he appeared. Personally, I prefer to completely ignore that line, which otherwise ends up torquing me off during probably my favorite Misty scene. And I wouldn't say that Nyara is, exactly, because she isn't by choice. She doesn't enjoy her sexuality; it was sort of foisted off on her. She and Skif like having sex, I'm sure, but again, it doesn't seem particularly central to their relationship. Survivor ? I don't think that's the right group, but anyway, I thought it very appropriate for Van and Stef. Jacquelle Oh, very clever, Worf. Remember the grotto/bathing pool area that Stef takes Skif and Nyara to while Van is chatting with the mages? Stef says something about he and Van had designed it--sort of like remodeling your home was the feel the passage had for me. I think there was even a mention of how the place was designed to be like the grottoes in the Vales--and there was nothing very subtle about what went on there ;->. I imagine Van and Stef put this place to the, uh, same use. Danya ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 942 *********************************
