I thank You also for the new guitar- my old one was getting a little worn. Now all I need is some of those gold-wrapped strings, and I'll be ready...and the datebook-thingie. Altough I fear I might use it simply to get a few more hours of sleep in the mornings. I swear, man was simply NOT designed to get up at 6:30 in the morning! To: Subject: Firecats/Tannim/gender Message-ID: <12NOV96.25215134.0195.MUSIC-+AT+-ACADEMIC.TRUMAN.EDU> I see what you mean about Firecats "seeming" groveborn. In a way, I think they are. I don't imagine they were raised by plain ol' housecats, after all (wouldn't that be odd? being the only one of your family with human intelligence -- not that we don't all feel that way sometimes ), and they can't reproduce with each other as Companions do, because there weren't any females before Solaris, and she's not dead yet (not dead yet!) So they must have "manifested" somehow instead of being born the conventional way -- a la the groveborn Companions. I guess this adds some weight to the theory that groveborns can be reincarnated souls, too. There you go, Danya. The Tannim timeline works out okay. Assume that Chrome Circle takes place in about 1993 or 94. Assume that Tannim is, oh, 27. Assume he's 16 at the time of Jinx High, which puts Jinx High in 1982 or 83. It's not unreasonable to have a gay man ill with AIDS in the early 80s. Yes, it's a little early, but not impossible, and anyway I'm just taking your word for it that Tannim was that old. I always saw him as between 23 and 25. All this really means is that Keith and Lenny were among the early casualties, which is only to be expected: since they were monogamous (it's implied) since CotN in the mid-70s, at least one of them would have to have been infected before that, back when no one knew much of anything about AIDS, let alone that there was any need for a gay man to wear a condom. The Chinthliss thing has always puzzled me, too. If he got the name from his magic dragon friend, how were his high school buddies calling him Tannim in Jinx High when he knew zero about magic? I raised this once and someone suggested he acquired it in a dream, as Chinthliss was in his dreams from an unspecified, though early age. I still think to adopt a name you heard in a dream would require you to have an appreciation for the esoteric and supernatural, which Tannim didn't seem to have in Jinx High. I think Misty is just clueless on timelines, because she throws things in wherever she needs them, with no planning. Just in case anyone else responds to Cennydd's post with a muttered, "But he's a man, so what does he know about it?" let me say that I mainly agree. I find the idea of rape disturbing, but then I find the idea of taking a sword to another human being disturbing too -- more so, really. Plenty of people survive rape, but few survive a heart-to-heart with Need, and I don't really get comforted by the idea of killing, *regardless of who is killed or what kind of a person they were.* Not to accuse or reprimand anyone for their feelings on the subject. I just wanted to head off at the pass any ideas that Cennydd's objections were because "men just don't understand," or whatever. I assume Vanyel and Stef can still have sex in the Forest of Sorrows. I can tell you this much: if I *ever* find out that they can't, that is it, and I am never reading, let alone buying, another Mercedes Lackey book as long as I live. Not that this will ruin Misty financially, or even concern her in the slightest, probably, but it will be my small way of registering Extreme Annoyance. You all probably think I'm joking here, but I'm not. Not remotely. Also, just to nit-pick, he didn't get the name Tannim til >after he met Chinthliss. (Do I have to dodge coconuts now?) The timeline is kinda odd, cause Tanimn is about 27 in CC (he says so somewhere in the book). There is no really defined year for CC cause it is set in the real world but there are no events that tie it to a specific year in the ninties. I usually guess that all four of the currently published SERRA books take place in the same year, around the time when the Waco debacle occurred(sp) cause that mess is mentioned in CC (I think). As for Tanimn being named by Chinthliss, I bought the explanation that Chinthliss was Tanimn's imaginary friend. Tanimn seems pretty clear on the idea that he was fooling around with magic at a fairly young age under Chinthliss's tutalege, but that he thought it was just his overactive imagination until the events of Jinx High. I found that explanation believable cause I had a dragon for an imaginary friend when I was little and Puff was a bit like Chinthliss. Has anyone else noticed that Chinthliss's abilities are about the same as the abilities of the dragons in Elvensbane and Elvenblood? Look at how both sorts of dragons can shapechange, and Chinthliss's way of looking at the world seems pretty close too. Jisa was Monarch's Own, and she had Empathy just as strong as Talia did. Of course, Misty didn't write LHM until after Arrows, but if they could keep records on Vanyel (cf. orientation class), then shouldn't they keep records on their monarchs/MO--especially when the M/MO are married to each other? (btw, that's one of my *favorite* scenes in the LHM books, when Jisa secretly marries ?Taver? --There's too many T-names back then !) Also, and I know there's no evd for this at ALL, but to me, I think that Talia and Jisa are close enough to be the same person. ----------------------------------------------------------------- I also have to agree with whoever made the connection between Sofya and Sofi...I hadn't thought of that either until you mentioned it. To: Subject: Golden Bough Message-ID: <13NOV96.10064378.0060.MUSIC-+AT+-ACADEMIC.TRUMAN.EDU> Someone asked if the folk group Golden Bough had anything to do with Misty's filk. The answer is, not yet and not exactly. The "not yet" is because they have committed to do an album or two linked to some of her new fairy tale books, Firebird and Fire Rose, I believe -- though I assume it'll be folk music instead of filk, like the Tempest *SERRAted Edge* album and the Leif Sorbye *Across the Borders,* that was linked to Bedlam Bards. And "not exactly" because lead singer Margie Butler does sing Talia's part on both Heralds, Harpers, and Havoc and Lovers, Lore, and Loss. I believe Leif Sorbye also sings some backup on Shadow Stalker. For those in the dark, here's a list of the Mistyfilk currently available -- annotated, of course, since I have a Medical Compulsion to Add Commentary (like Wendy Pini's rule for drawing the *Beauty & the Beast* graphic novels: "When in doubt, stick some fringe on it.") Heralds, Harpers, and Havoc: First of the tapes, containing most of the songs printed in the back of Arrow's Fall. Margie Butler as Talia, Frank Hayes as Jadus, Larry Warner as Dirk, Kris Klover as Kris (coincidence?), and Mercedes Lackey as Selenay (common consensus is that she mangles it). Has kind of a recorded-in-your-basement sound to it, but manages some really memorable music, I think. Not yet available on CD. Lovers, Lore, and Loss: The most recent, available on tape and CD. New songs that take place mainly during Arrow's Fall. Margie Butler returns as Talia, there's a new guy as Dirk who isn't bad, though he's not Larry. Mainly, you really need this one if you haven't yet been introduced to Shandeen, who takes over as Selenay and has a voice to die for. Cecilia Eng, IIRC, as Elspeth. Shadow Stalker: Subtitled "Songs from Vanyel's time." The songs from Magic's Price, plus several more. Heather Alexander sings everything. Mostly gorgeous, occasionally annoying (most people go ballistic over "Herald's Creed," but on the irritation meter, I find "Web of Light" the worst offender). Some neat songs added from the Tayledras, including Moondance's story and what sounds like a Tayledras shaman's chant -- go figure, but it's a nice song. Heather Alexander sings everything. Did I mention that? Try to forget "Magic's Price," which is insufferably bouncy, considering it was WRITTEN AS STEFEN'S FINAL TRIBUTE TO HIS LOST LOVE. Ahem, sorry, didn't mean to yell. But if you've heard it, you understand how absolutely inappropriate it is. Tape & CD. Oathbound: I really like this one. Leslie Fish as Tarma, Heather Alexander as Kethry, Larry Warner as Tarma's spirit teacher who sings a bunch of Shin'a'in traditionals, and Cecilia Eng as the young Tarma. Mostly Shin'a'in songs instead of songs specifically related to the book. Soon to be available on CD. Oathbreakers: Leslie and Heather again, and Michael Longcor as wossname, Kethry's librarian. The everfun Frank Hayes as Leslac. More specifically related to the book. An appearance by Juanita Coulson singing Need's story. Like HH&H, sometimes great, usually just sort of entertaining. Soon to be available on CD. By the Sword: The only collection of Valdemar music *not* written by Misty. Written and performed by Meg Davis, who rocks (spiritually and literally -- she has a great Celtic rock band, as well as many wonderful filk and traditional Celtic tapes). A whole different sound, a little more electric, a little more passionate. Does what I think accompanying music should, and adds entirely new dimensions to Kerowyn's character, especially in the awkward, tender, wistful, and stubborn love song, "At the Edge of the Forest." Not all the songs are brilliant, but I still think it's a brilliant CD. What can I say? Meg Davis is my 2nd favorite filk singer (Heather's my third.) So I'm partial to this one. And the infamous "Kerowyn's Ride" that Kero hated so much in By the Sword is recorded on *Magic, Moondust, and Melancholy,* a collection of non-Valdemar (except "KR," obviously) filk by Lackey & Fish, sung by Leslie Fish and Heather Alexander. A pretty good tape that's been reviewed here recently, so I won't. Can I just say, I once sang the Kerowyn part in "Kerowyn's Ride" while Leslie Fish backed us up on guitar? I'm saying. It didn't really resolve the plot in my mind...it just kind of fixed things for the moment...again. Actually, that's something that really bothers me about the whole Storm series. She (IMNSHO) left all the books hanging. I mean, with Vanyel, each book was fairly self-contained. There were threads that tied the whole series together, but it wasn't like she left them as cliffhangers. With the Storm books, it kind of struck me that she might as well have left a little note at the end of the book that said "Ha-ha! You've reached the end! Now you miserable wreck, you have to wait an entire year until I publish the next one! And by that time you will be so consumed curiousity, you're going to go out and buy the hardcover! *evil laughter*" So, was it just me?
