There is a choral arrangement for Schindlers List that might be appropriate. It's the theme song, but I cannot remember the composer at this time. If I remember correctly, it was published by Hal Leonard Publishing. Actually, I think it's a John Williams piece. :) Anyway, good hunting. IIRC, in AFlight, Elspeth is worried that she won't be chosen, and Talia tells her that Teren wasn't chosen until after he was married and had a family (textevd, anyone...my books-+AT+-home). Alberich, Kero and Daren are the only other adults I can think of who were chosen, but none of them had other familial ties to worry about. This also makes me wonder if Keren was chosen as a child/adolescent or as an adult. Renee..I took a class on the Holocaust 2 years ago, but we never covered music written during or after that period. But, every year the Hillel foundation at NU has volunteers read the names of Holocaust victims for about 12 hours--each volunteer reads the names off a list for 10-15 minutes. You might try finding some "haunting" calssical or contemporary music to play in the background while someone reads names of the victims. It's just a thought. And I do not want to be the catalyst for a list-war or a poison "pen" campaign. But some of the recent posts about monogomy and lifebonds have really bothered me. I had thought to keep this to myself, but I'm afraid it will haunt me unless I do say something. So here goes. Lately, there has been a thread about kestra'chern, lifebonds, and monogomy. I can't lay out the whole thing for you; if you've been reading, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. But the parts I wanted to address are as follows: Several people have written on this topic that the Tale'edras are rarely monogomous, even those in lifebonds or lovebonds. Someone wrote about "Moondance flirting with Vanyel", and this comment I found both distressing and disturbing. I never read *anything* sexual between Moondance and Vanyel. Vanyel was deeply damaged, physically and emotionally, when he was first in k'Treva Vale. Moondance, above all, had shared everything with Vanyel, in the process of healing him. I think he was trying to set Vanyel at ease, to let him know that he was wanted and welcome. I don't think Moondance would even be capable of "cheating" on Starwind; I'll get to that in a minute. I think the same person that wrote about Tale'edras not being monogomous even in lifebonds used as textev. the the scene in SW when Firesong and Darkwind are joking in the hot springs, and An'desha is hurt and thinks FIresong would abandon him for Darkwind. This person (I'm sorry, I can't remember who :) ) indicated that Darkwind would have considered a relationship with Firesong, despite being all-but-married to Elspeth. Now, what Elspeth was trying to do, in that little scene, was assure An'desha that *no such thing would ever happen*. Darkwind would never hurt her, and Firesong wouldn't dream of causing hurt to An'desha by taking another lover. From what I've seen between Darkwind and Elspeth it would never occur to him, Tale'edras or not. What is stated over and over about lifebonds is "not ever wanting anyone else". We see this with Talia and Dirk, and Stefen and Vanyel. I can't think of a lifebonded couple we've seen that was anything *but* monogomous. I can't imagine Vanyel, Stefen, Talia, Sherril, etc. even looking at anyone else. Nor can imagine it of Amberdrake (this, I think is what started it.) I don't think he would ever *want* anyone but Winterhart. And I imagine, as a kestra'chern, that he has learned to separate his personal feelings from his professional duties. I also doubt that "those duties" of a kestra'chern happen half as often as we seem to think. And maybe Amberdrake made some arrangements we don't know about. Well, I'm not sure what exactly to say now, so I'll stop. I got this off my chest. I hope you all can understand what I'm trying to say. Please don't shoot, and don't fling any levinbolts at me; this is just how I feel about things. Bear in mind, it's all feelings and emotions and philosophy, so don't cut me apart on that. Here goes. I've been picking through part of my CD collection and found a __whole bunch__ of songs that I think would be appropriate for certain characters. Some of them are a bit goofy (O.K. a lot goofy) I had some time to kill, so... Hope you all like it... Celine Dion - "Colour of my Love" 1.When I Fall In Love - This wasn't originally a Celine Dion song, it's older than that, but I felt it would be appropriate for Teren or for Kris. Both don't feel that a marriage is worth having for "any less than what they (Sherill and Keren, I think) have". When I fall in love It will be forever Or I'll never fall in love... 2.The Power of Love - I thought this would be perfect for either Van to 'Lendel or Moondance to Starwind, except for one problem. Celine sings, "'cuz I'm your lady" in the chorus The sound of your heart beating Made it clear Suddenly the feeling that I can't go on Is light years away.... 3.Think Twice - I thought this would be a good one for Firesong to sing to An'desha. It's the pov person singing to their lover not to leave him/her. Don't think I can't feel that there's something wrong You've been the sweetest part of my life for so long I look in your eyes and there's a distant light You and I know, there'll be a storm tonight This is getting serious \---I didn't even notice this the first time! Are you thinking 'bout you or us?... 4.Love Doesn't Ask Why - I saw this one and said immediately - KERO AND ELDAN! It just struck me as sooo appropriate. (It would be Eldan singing to Kero, I think.) ...Love doesn't think twice it can come all at once Or whisper from a distance... ...Now I can feel what you're afraid to say If you give your soul to me Will you give too much away?... There's more pertinent verses, but I didn't want to type out the whole song. 5. Colour of My Love - I don't know who this would be appropriate for, but I just _love_ this song. It has some Fabulous Imagery in it. If you haven't heard it yet, I definately recommend it. Oliver and Company (Disney) Billy Joel, singing "Why Should I Worry?" - Young Skif, all the way. (Chorus):Why should I worry? Why should I care? I may not have a dime But I got street savoir faire... Need I say more? Showboat You Are Love - This is just an absolutely classic love song. It could fit for any classicly love/life-bonded couple. Fiddler on the Roof - Forgive me, I got a *bit* goofy with these. 1.Miracle of Miracles-Dirk after he finally "gets" Talia God has made a man, today!.... 2.Far From the Home I Love-I originally thought Elspeth to Selenay before she leaves in WoFate, then I thought before she leaves in WoFury, then I thought it might be more appropriate for Firesong to sing it to his parents. ...How can I hope to make you understand Why I do, what I do? Why I must travel to a distant land Far from the home I love... 3.Sunrise, Sunset - Selenay or Talia when she/they find out about Elspeth and Darkwind. Is this the little girl I carried Is this the little boy at play <--This isn't really appropriate, but... I don't remember growing older When did they? <--Referring to Elspeth ... I hope you all enjoyed these. :) If anyone wants the lyrics to any of these songs, let me know, I'll e-mail 'em to ya. :) Renee flare-+AT+-udel.edu |"I'm trying to find a polite way of saying 'drop University of Delaware |dead' and not having much luck." Ah-Hah! In my High School's Concert Choir, we did these pieces that are called "Songs of Children: a cantata in memory of all children who perished in the Holocaust." It's basically a bunch of poems from the book _I Never Saw Another Butterfly_ (a collection of children's poetry found hidden all over Concentration Camps -- stuffed in mattresses, buried, in walls, etc) put to music by Robert Convery. We did a World Premier recording of them, so the following quotes are from the CD's booklet. "Mr. Convery's cantata SONGS OF CHILDREN received its Washington, DC, premiere April 16, 1993, as part of the celebration of the opening of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum." "SONGS OF CHILDREN, for choir, violin, viola, 'cello, and piano, is a cantata of nine poems written by children while interned at Terezin concentration camp. The cantata was composed in memory of all children who perished in the Holocaust. The ordering of the poems in SoC demonstrates a spiritual transformation of a child, beginning with the naive state of entry into the concentration camp; the quick, brutal confrontation with the reality of the camp; a sense of having one's soul stripped from one's body; a cool vision of the reality of the camp; and, finally, a transcendence of that reality, knowing the soul cannot be harmed, though the body be humiliated, degraded, and destroyed." -- Robert Convery They're really awesome, but there's no way you could learn all of them in 21 days. They took us (working 4.5 hours a week) a trimester to learn really well. Maybe one or two of them, though -- there are 9 total, plus an instrumental interlude. If you want to hear them, I don't know where they might be sold other than our recording which is sold at the bookstore of Phillips Exeter Academy. I can, however, send you a dub so you can hear it. We can work out financial gunk off-list. If you decide you want it, I can call my connections at the Academy and see what's up with all the copyright stuff and getting you copies of the sheet music. But I don't have a better suggestion, so we'll leave our guess to that. There's no way we could look at the books because we don't have them. !?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! You know what? About that funny coincidence of meeting Misty fans all over the place... i just caused two people to meet in the funniest way. Ok, there was this guy who decided to make a master mailing list with everybody who had forwarded humorous posts to him on it. This thing was so big, our computer wouldn't display the names in the CC: field past D. Anyway, one of the people who responded and i started talking because of the "Le Petit Prince" quote in my .sig Of course, I told her to check out Misty. She said she really wanted to, but wouldn't until the summer. Then, just the other day, one of the people from the newsgroup and i were talking, and i noticed they went to the same school. When i asked her if she knew the other person-- needle in a haystack!-- it turned out she does. Now, she's gonna hook the first girl on Misty. I'm so proud. By the way, how do you like my new sig? |~| _______________________________________________ |~| | |~| free bard woodlark -- dsarik-+AT+-PO-Box.McGill.CA |~| | ~| |_______________________________________________| |~ ~ ~ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Nov 1996 15:14:52 -0800 From: hallett-+AT+-sprynet.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Bad guys/new Arkenstone CD Message-ID: <199611142314.PAA06709-+AT+-m4.sprynet.com> Earlier today, Jake wrote: > >It seems that Misty has lost her penchant for making a good bad character. >I mean, off the top of my head, all of the antagonists I can think of who >were evil seemed to be shallow. Just last night I was writing back one of my pen pals and we seem to have found ourselves writing back and forth about what we like and dislike about certain authors. As I thought and wrote, it occured to me that while there are many authors out there who can write a really great villian, lately Misty isn't one of them. In short, I agree with you guys whole heartedly. I'm one of those people who love a good antagonist just as much as a good protagonist so this is really a bit dissappointing to me. (As much as I love some of Misty's work, I am of the opinion that this is one of the areas of her writing that she could perhaps improve.) One of my favorite antagonists that I've found in a fantasy novel is Terry Angel from Strands of Sunlight by Gael Baudino. (I'm pretty sure that was his name anyway; our books are all in boxes since we're redecorating and turning the spare room into a small library so it would be a real ordeal to check on that right now.) IMHO, he was one amazingly twisted man and I really enjoyed the way she developed that character. If you like a good villian, it's one I'd recommend for consideration. (It is book four in a series, but I thought all of them were pretty good except the third book, Shroud Of Shadow. Now there's one depressing book!) This may cross into that "fluffy" border since I'm going beyond the fantasy genre here, but I think the most remarkable villian I've ever read about in any novel was the killer in Dean Koontz's Hideaway. I think the villian in that one was what really made the book for me actually. He was very psychotic, but intense and I thought the character development was wonderful! Another great read for those who savor a good villian! By the way, I did get a chance to listen to all of the new David Arkenstone CD last night and I really enjoyed it. It was ever so slightly different in style from the rest of his music that I've heard, but very enjoyable nevertheless. I still haven't read the new Misty story that came with it, but I hope to make time for that later on tonight. Well, I think that's it for now! Okay, Heralds, Harpers, and Havoc *is* available on CD, and "Earth Spirit" probably is a kyree song and not a Tayledras song. (This makes more sense, as the word "shaman" is actually in the song, the Tayledras have no shamans, and contrary to back-of-book wisdom, there are no Shin'a'in in the LHM trilogy). They had multiple goddess-aspects in Rethwellan, not among the Holderkin. There's probably more, but I offer up a blanket apology for all recent missteps, and will try to be righter in the future I even misquoted *myself,* if you can believe. I looked up my Jordan quote, and it was "the lightning and drunkenness and orgasm of being in love with Korovich." Which was close to what I said, except not. This is how well I'm functioning this week. Sheesh. On the up side, I'm *almost finished* with the bloody Sleeping Beauty story that's taken me over a month to write. By golly, they were right when they said this computer was "faster functioning for increased productivity" Do I need a special attatchment to get "better writing for increased sales"? Oh, and that long filk thing I posted to the list? That was in response to something said on the LotPW list, not this one. So for all of you scratching your heads thinking, "Golden Bough? When did I miss this?"...sorry. But...I hope you enjoyed it anyway Actually, when I get my homepage this summer, I'm thinking about putting up filk reviews on it. This is something I at least haven't seen ten thousand times on the Web. Would anybody like to react to my off-the-cuff Misty reviews? Is this something that would be worthwhile to put up on the Web, expanded to include Davis, Longcor, Alexander, Ecklar, etcetera? I'd really like to have something marginally unique, in addition to the standard links and "hi, you don't know me" drek.
