Freezing rain, then sleet, then snow, then back to sleet, then back to freezing rain. It's truly disgusting out there. ObMisty: Vanyel and Tylendel....one wonders what would have happened if that relationship had been allowed to "grow up". If Tylendel hadn't died, I mean. They had a lifebond, yes, but they were both quite young, still trainees (or that age, in Vanyel's case), they had a lot to learn yet. And I know that Stefen is Tylendel reborn, but by this time Van had been through hells and back, the age gap was more substantial, and Stefen wasn't a Herald. (Now, before I get jumped on, I don't mean that Stefen is not as great a person because he wasn't Chosen, only that he and Vanyel could sometimes have had a communication problem along those lines.) Anyway, It would have been rather interesting to see Van and Tylendel mature together, and to watch their relationship mature as well. Had another thought (two in one day! wow!)...Vanyel wouldn't have been Chosen if it weren't for his helping Tylendel, right? That's what blasted his channels open...so along the same lines, assuming 'Lendel had not committed suicide, both he and Vanyel would have been Heralds...*that* would have been interesting to watch as well.... You know, I don't really know why I'm pursuing this line of thought...I dislike "might have beens" on principle: I don't believe in the law of Chance. Therefore, since all is meant, Tylendel's death and Vanyel's subsequent life with Stefen is immutable. That renders my previous question pretty much unanswerable, at least according to my philosophy. Ouch. I should just avoid philosophy in general...I just get myself all twisted about. Must be the weather today.... 's e do bheatha, Kaatje Acolyte of Music and Song (O Goddess Sophia? By that same token, couldn't it be a Shin'a'in song? I know that there were no Shin'a'in in the MP trilogy (except the "Shin'a'in" stud ), but when I first heard it the first thing that came to mind was - "Yup, that's definately how I imagined Shin'a'in music would sound." I always imagined the Shin'a'in as a very earthy/elemental type of people. They are very connected to their land because of the pact they made with their Goddess, Kal'enel. Tarma referred to the Plains as sometimes being a "harsh place" (I think), so it would make sense for them to sing songs to praise the different elements in hopes that the seasons would not be so harsh. I always figured that the song Stef wrote for kyree would have no vocal accompaniment - at least not a *worded* vocal accompaniment. Why? Because the kyree have no physical voices to produce words with. I can't imagine Misty being silly enough to try to reproduce Mindvoices on an album. Having no idea what is desired of him has made him uneasy, "I'm only an apprentice! What could the Bardic Collegium Council [for lack of another word :)] possibly want with me?" He cautiously picks up his lute and other belongings and follows the servant into the Council chambers. The servant shakes his head sadly as he leaves the room, "Poor child. If only he knew what he was in for..." Back in the Council chamber, the young bard has come to the head of the Council table. The Head of the Council looks up as he hears the boy's footsteps. He smiles a bit and says, "Gyran, I presume? Yes, yes of course you are, don't bother to tell me. Wastes time you see..." Gyran looks around, growing more alarmed every moment. Each council member is nodding their head and looking at him as if he were a lab rat. He is presently called back to himself by the Master who has begun to speak again. "Now boy. You've been an apprentice for a year and a half. You know the basics of our craft, I've heard you play - you're fairly good. We, the Council, have decided that it is time for you to begin your Journeyman's period..." Upon hearing this, Gyran's knees go watery with relief. *That's all they wanted to tell me? Thank you, Lord and Lady!* He becomes aware that the Master is still speaking, "...have observed a certain lack of moral values in the young bards of today. We have therefore decided that all journeyman will accompany Heralds on circuit at least once during their time as journeyman..." My interpretation of the scene (and yes, that's the one I meant) is that if it wouldn't have bothered Elspeth and An'desha, Darkwind *may well have* had a fling with Firesong. Not would have, granted, but might have. But, of course, it would have hurt Elspeth and An'desha, so they wouldn't do it. I agree with you about the Heighlei's attitude towards lifebonding, but I didn't spread that over to the other cultures on Velgarth, and maybe I should have. I guess I just like the idea that it's an option. > Perhaps that was unwarrented, in which case you're right that lifebound > kestra'chern don't have to turn monogamous; but I still think someone like > Firesong might ask it of his/her partner. Really, we're talking about two different subjects. Whether a lifebound kesta'chern would have intimate contact with a client is an entirely different question than whether lifebonded Tayledras are monogamous. As I said, I don't think of Firesong as jealous. But if he or some other Tayledras lifebonded to a kestra'chern was, then I agree, the partner would abstain. I don't think that these particular dutes of a kestra'chern happen very often anyway. Tresta wrote: (Don't worry, Tresta, I don't bite. Darkwind > would never hurt her, and Firesong wouldn't dream of causing hurt to > An'desha by taking another lover. From what I've seen between > Darkwind and Elspeth it would never occur to him, Tale'edras or not. Yes, I agree, Elspeth was saying that no such thing would happen, but IMO, she was saying that it wouldn't happen *because* it would hurt her and An'desha. I seem to recall her saying that if she were Tayledras and didn't object, and if he didn't either, then Darkwind and Firesong may well have had a fling. She said something about an agreement with Darkwind that he could joke about it, but he couldn't actually carry through. (And if he did, she, Gwena, and Vree would make him suffer for it.) (I'm sorry, I don't have the book here with me at work.) If they had to come to terms with this issue, then clearly, in Tayledras society, it must be fairly common. But, since they're not lifebonded, it doesn't really answer anything. She also wrote: > What is stated over and over about lifebonds is "not ever wanting > anyone else". We see this with Talia and Dirk, and Stefen and > Vanyel. I can't think of a lifebonded couple we've seen that was > anything *but* monogomous. I can't imagine Vanyel, Stefen, Talia, > Sherril, etc. even looking at anyone else. But all of these characters are Valdemaran. I don't think even a lifebonded Tayledras would have wanted to have an affair, but to have some, errr, 'sport' in one of the pools for an hour or so...... Certainly, if it would hurt their partner (lifebonded or not), as it would An'desha or Elspeth, and probably Winterhart as well, since she wasn't born Tayledras, then yes, I think they would be monogamous. But if all concerned know, deep down, that it's just fun and games, with no deeper meaning than entertainment, then I think it's quite possible some sporting might take place. I'm not saying that sex between partners is *just* fun and games. It can be much more, bringing them closer together and deepening their bond on a level deeper than words. But with someone else, it would be just light-hearted sport. Really, we have no evidence either way about lifebonded Tayledras, and we'll have to agree to disagree. I guess I kind of like the idea of a society in which you're free to play around *without hurting your partner*. I know I could never live with it. If my boyfriend ever slept with someone else, I'd be gone in a second. (With him, however, it's not other women I have to be jealous of, just small-mouth bass!) And of course, we have to worry about things like disease that the Tayledras never need to think about. But it might be nice to be able to look on it simply as a form of entertainment on occasion. Well, now that you've had a much closer look at the inner workings of Tammy than you ever wanted , let me say that this is my opinion. Hopefully I've managed to avoid offending anyone. Preferably staying in Valdemar to do it. If was kind of confusing to me how he was going to do both, but it seemed Solaris wanted him to stay in Valdemar since all of the other Sun Priests would have to get over the "evil Herald" thing and she didn't even want to think about opinions on the gryphons. BTW, I do like the theory. It doesn't seem like something Misty would do, I think... but I would. ;) Kat Priestess of Karma ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Nov 1996 16:04:17 -0600 (CST) From: "V. Message-ID: <15NOV96.18529988.0184.MUSIC-+AT+-ACADEMIC.TRUMAN.EDU> Great Scott. Hades, I couldn't have followed your post if my life depended on it. Maybe I read it too slowly. But, my two cents of advice on your book. First, publishers like to read the first three chapters and an outlien of your book to decided whether or not they're interested in reading the whole thing before they reject it I wouldn't adivse sending in your sample chapters until the whole thing is finished, though. Can you imagine getting a letter from X important editor saying, "I like it, send the rest," and the rest hasn't yet been written? The ensuing panic would be seismic. Anyway, for how to submit and where (ahem, submit your *manuscript,* thank you), get the 1997 Writer's Marketplace. That should answer most questions. Good luck. And remember, speculative fiction fans are a warm and close-knit community, but we do still kill the weak and feed them to starving artists. I like the Florian and Karal hypothesis, by golly. It somehow sounds like Misty -- everybody has to be connected to everything else in four different ways. I'm joking, though, or at least I'm not being mean, because I do the same thing. It's just fun. How do you figure Hulda as being particularly interesting, Dog of Pogyts? She was sadistic and power-mad and treated everyone as a tool or an enemy. This sounds like every other Misty villain to me. The only unique thing I recall about Hulda is that she was female, and Misty's villains generally are not. What do you think makes her different? (That's a genuine question, not a challenging sort of, "So where do you get off?" kind of thing. I'm trying to be super-clear when I'm being nice, because everybody seems to be scared of me. *Formidable keyboard,* indeed. Y'all make it sound like I bash people over the head with it. I'm just -- relatively articulate, and I try to make my ideas clear. I'm very sweet, and I like kitty cats and new shoes. I'm an INFP. They can't hurt you.) I don't remember it being stated even once, let >alone "over and over." In answer to both Heather and Cen, when I wrote this about not ever wanting anyone else, it was taken directly from Magic's Price, in Stefens own words, when he is aching for Vanyel and not daring to court him openly. P 93 "I'm *celibate*, that's what I am! I'm worse than celibate; I'm fixated. It's not just that Vanyel isn't co-operating, it's that I don't *want* anyone else anymore, and the better I know him the worse it gets!" There is more in Magic's Price, all from Stefen's own heart and in his own words. At least one other; I can't find it in the book now that I'm looking. I also remember something from Arrow's Fall about Talia suffering because of Rolan's, er, relationship with Ahrodie, because she "positively ached for Ahrodies Chosen." Definite sexual tension there. It wasn't stated in so many words in that case, but it just *felt* that Dirk and no one else was on her mind when *that* subject came up. And I'm not saying that all lifebonded relationships can be evaluated on the monogomy issue based on these examples; I am only trying to explain why I wrote that about "not wanting..." and what I was thinking when I did. So this is what I meant. Nothing I wrote was meant to judge anyone or anything; I would never presume to do that. And I can perfectly understand "I'm married; not dead." There's no harm in looking; and no harm in more, as long as everyone involved is entirely willing for the arrangement and no one is hurt. Just wanted to clear that up.
