IIRC there are sort of two different compositions to the miracle thing, one used in MPromise when Medren's shoulder is bruised and the other in MPrice for Stef's fingers. However, since I did the unthinkable and LENT them. Ahh! The lengths one goes in order to make the numbers of Misty fans increase. In any case, I believe one of the ointments had wormwood and rosemary, and the other had mint and something else. While we are in the realm of quotations, there is a poem I specially like but I cannot remember who wrote it. Can somebody help me on that please? I may be misquoting, but as fas as I remember, it goes: We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams wandering by lone sea breakers and sitting by desolate streams world losers and world forsakers on whom the pale moon gleams, yet we are the movers and shakers of the world, forever, it seems. Is the Winds trilogy worth the read? For the most part, I'd say yes. I found Winds of Fate a bit slow and plodding, but you do get to know Elspeth again (who isn't as much of a brat as she used to be), as well as the other characters, so it is a must read if you're going to read any of the series. I was pretty happy with WoChange and WoFury, however I did find the ending, well, a bit anticlimactic, but other than that... Let's just say IMHO it's far from the best Misty has ever written, and yes, even in spite of all that, I'd still say it's worth the read. Of course you should also know I think I've turned into one of those people who would read her grocery list if she ever published it, which is a sad, sad, so sad, thing, but true nonetheless. If you do read it, I hope you enjoy it! Bye! Arielle, Goddess of Mispelling, Mistress of toyop's "Hide the liquor and the women! She has a lot of strength as well, though, so maybe I should add "Ready For the Storm," by Kathy Mattea (and others, originally written by Dougie MacLean). OR, now that I think about it, there's a song on the Twin Peaks soundtrack. . . . The Laura Palmer Theme, perhaps? Yes, that's it, there we go. Tragedy and hope and tragedy again all woven inn with one another. ---While I'm thinking of it, help me settle an argument with a friend who is not a Misty fan, but who has read HoV: How many of you would describe Talia as "angst-filled"?-- Also, for Tarma, always one of my top favorites, "Alive," off of Pearl Jam's good ol' Ten. I really don't think she has to sound terribly tribal, just a definite survivor. (This would be seen/heard as a memory sort of song, for the events that so changed her life.) And Kethry, well, hmm, I doubt there will be too many who agree with me here, but i really think REM--"Turn You Inside Out" is appropriate, especially in light of how easy it always was for her to sweet her way into a situation and blast her way back out of it. And, um, the rest of you are wiser and such than i am, so please someone send me an address or something for ordering info for Misty's music. The only copies I've ever actually heard were third-generation tapeoffs, but I liked what managed to bubble up thru the tape hiss and they're simply not available anywhere in this area. Mil gracias. She just wants him to leave her alone. I have an Evil Brother--the only way I deal with him when i can tell he wants something out of meand starts asking for visitss and the like is to suggest a meeting inpublic, with at least a couple friends, or both. Inventing reasons why isn't really that hard. Let him pick a date, agree, then, "oh, you know, I promised [whoever] I'd meet him/her [somewhere]--why don't you just show up there too." Or agree to the date, don't even say anything about [whoever], and just have them there with you, in the car or at home or at the restaurant or wherever. If he won't agree to the first, then you KNOW something's up, and you may have to resort to the second. > I suppose, if worse comes to worse, I could follow Tarma's example and > steal her away in the middle of the night; I doubt he'd look for her in the > center of the Plains. And if he does try to actually hurt her, I can try > that line about slicing widthwise or lengthwise. (Like I said; some things > I will defend at any cost). I've wanted to try that one myself a time or two, but seriously--if this is truly an Evil Brother, he's not worth dulling your blade or staining your carpet. Fight backstabbing with backstabbing, ay? And stealing her away. . . well, he'll still be out there somewhere and eventually he could find her even in the center of the Plains. Trust me; I thought I would at least have been safe deep in Sorrows, but the cold finally drove me out and he was waiting there with friends he'd gotten together while I was hiding. Your friend maybe isn't the vicious backstabbing type; in that case, you may have no choice but to take matters into your own mailed fists. Best of luck and wishes. As for Vanyel's method, hmm. Since I already mentioned Sorrows, perhaps he'd chase the EB into that place and let it take its own justice on him. Of course, Sorrows wasn't so much Sorrows while Vanyel was alive, was it? Well, then maybe he'd just summon a vrondi, ask the EB if he was an Evil Brother, and when he convicted himself, have his head separated from his body. --vix ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Nov 1996 21:48:42 -0500 (EST) From: Renee Mic Markowicz To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Mage Winds Message-ID: On Sat, 16 Nov 1996, Larissa march wrote: > Personally, I really liked it [Mage Winds]. I believe you know what to do, heartfelt Tresta. You've chosen a path that leads you to guardian the truths you hold. As you have quoted in your .sig "Love must live free." In order for her love and life to be truly free, it is up to her clan and family and friends - although both may be one in the same - to show your friend that it takes a whole clan sometimes to make things right. She should not have to live in fear, and it is up to all who love her to protect her. If all else fails, remember there is always a Guardian near. You only need the strength to ask. IMHO, Brandon (Remember, these are MY thoughts. This is as much help as I can give. But hold true to your faith, and the path shall be lit for you.) May your Horses be faster than those who chase them. P.S. I hope that wasn't too deep or off topic :p The wings of the wind They bring me to you To learn and to teach To make my self true. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Nov 1996 21:59:15 CST From: "Brandon J Heins" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Evil Brothers (only sorta Misty) Message-ID: <19C81596E41-+AT+-UIU-FAYETTE-1.UPPER-IOWA-UNIV.UIU.EDU> Greetings again all. Tresta- I should have braided this to my last post, but I only now remembered it. If this brother is as bad as you say he is, he's most likely wronged more people than your friend can name. There's always the Oathbreaking. "These are the signs of a traitor to kin- "Greed for the wealthy must share "Shedding of shared blood their power to win "Is that from kin hear no prayer. "Lust for the flesh of the common source born "Shattered each promise to the maid "Banish the traitor by kin-bond forsworn "Give him no shelter or aid." >From "Oathbound/Oathbreakers" The wings of the wind They bring me to you To learn and to teach To make my self true. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Nov 1996 22:07:43 -0600 (CST) From: Katherine M Brielmaier To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Bard circuits/Flat villains Message-ID: On Sat, 16 Nov 1996, Lynne Markova wrote: > Lady Sophia stops listening to Holst's The Planets (again!) long enough to > reply: > > > > > Kaatje > > Acolyte of Music and Song > > (O Goddess Sophia? I will endeavor most humbly to practice my art for the true glory of Thy Worship. Actually, truth is stranger than fiction, because it just occurred to me that this kind of mix is exactly what I'm going to school for. Wouldn't that make a fun short story? Say making that awful...Leslac?....do a tour of duty? He'd probably jump at the chance, then after three days realize what he was up against, and spend the rest of his days composing laments on horse-hooves, wet wool, and soggy feet. ObMisty: RE: Winds Trilogy and its OK-ness. Yeah...it did have its good points. I suspect (and it's a terrible thing to admit) that I might have liked it better if I'd read it in paperback instead of hardcover. For some reason I just have a harder time enjoying books in hardback...Maybe the words are too large and far apart, and it makes me *conscious* that I'm reading....no easier way to wreck a good read than when you remember that you're just sitting in a chair and not actually roaming about the Plains, y'know?
