So, erm...oh yeah. The Perfidious Nevis wouldn't bother me if we'd had more than vague references to a positive bi character. An'desha doesn't count, to me, since he's shown as mostly straight with one exception. Falconsbane is a baddie-- that bothers me less than Nevis, since Misty is probably not trying to imply that Falconsbane is bad *because* he's er, omnivorous. Silverfox's orientation is mentioned only by implication ("'...exclusively shay'a'chern as *you* are,'" he says to Firesong, emphasis mine). Various random characters among the Star-Eyed's people could be bisexual, we just don't know (Darkwind's father, for example)... What I'd like to see is a major character with a current interest in a member of one sex and some references to the history of his/her love life that includes the other sex. It would be nice, too, if this person could be characterized as neither indecisive nor manipulative. --Lee-- 97jsalaz-+AT+-uor.edu -- www.geocities.com/Athens/4709/ "What time is it?"--Dekker, P. / Knight of the OAM, Spreader of Humor, Self-Appointed User of 5-point Vocabulary Words Such As "Panegyric" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Nov 1996 15:11:07 -0500 (EST) From: Wintershard To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: a long somewhat list-fluffy post Message-ID: Lightstorm wrote: >>I'd also like to request that everyone think about the tone in which they are writing.<< I'd like to second that, please. Before anyone attacks me with flaming coconuts or drags me off to Misty's lawyers, I will explain! A group of my AOL friends and I have created our own world. We all liked gryphons, so they are the main inhabitants. But they have been modified. So has the magic. The mindspeech is there, but mindspeech shows up in a lot of fantasy writing. And the only mindgift is Empathy, which could easily be from anything else. It's legal, and it's fun. We have a bunch of characters each. I currently have...4 main characters and 4 secondary ones. What was wrong with Willow? It absolutely died at the box office by Hollywood standards, and for the longest time the filmmakers could not figure out why since Joseph Campbell himself helped provide the mythic underpinnings for the story. The problem was the plot. They started out to tell one story: how this baby floating down a river in a basket/cradle/whatever saves her people (that is, the tale of Moses and a whole host of others). They then went on to tell the story of Willow instead. The kid in the basket never grew up and never became more than a "football" that the characters passed to each other. Fun special effects, but the filmmakers did not follow through on the story that they promised to tell the audience--something that is guaranteed to tick off audiences and destroy your word-of-mouth advertising, even if the audiences never do realize what it actually was that the did not like about the film (that it broke an extremely old and well-known story pattern). In the above referenced post, I tried to acknowledge that Danya had a right to her opinion, and I agree, that is what this list is for. But I must confess that I have been more than a bit offended by the *tone* of some recent posts, and am consequently feeling a bit tense about the whole debate. As of this post, I am dropping OUT of it, because I do not wish to foster ill-will or bad feelings. I like debate. I apologize to Danya and to anybody whom I may have offended by sounding snippy. It wasn't my intention, but I can certainly see where I might have come off sounding nasty. I am not apologizing for expressing my opinion, but I certainly didn't intend to be rude! It's hard to have a bitter arguement about what books should go on our non-Misty reading lists . Yes, I have actually. I just finished a couple of books by RA MacAvoy that aren't really *new* but they are fabulous. _Tea with the Black Dragon_ and _Twisting the Rope_ - if you like mysterious plots, dragons, tea and Celtic music, you should love these. I also just read the new Amy Tan book _The Hundred Secret Senses_. A two thumbs up! I would think that they most likely *want* to join their Chosen after Death. IMVHO. Korendil wrote: >>Then again, the worst of all is when Larry did the cover--like for Oathbewildered. Eeyuch! There he lives awaiting the time of his return. I think that first sentence is unjustified. In my disciplines (law & computer science), an ounce of evidence is worth a pound of eminent opinion. I did note originally that you had obviously done more research into the area than I, so please don't imply that I was totally disregarding your background. You cited some examples of legends in the mail above and now I'm convinced. Thank you. But to respond to your implied criticism, I was raised to question things and that's what university teaches as well. I don't think I'm obligated to take an unsubstantiated (in that no citations were originally given) opinion as gospel, even if that opinion is from someone with a PhD in the area. [1] No-one would do it in law, and I won't do it in other areas either. To suggest one should is the rankest form of intellectual bigotry. [1] Please note the difference between according weight to an opinion, which I do, and not daring to question an opinion (or ask for supporting evidence. Learned opinion in an grey area in which there is no evidence, is persuasive, not compelling. I wouldn't have responded to this on list, but I think it's a point that ought to be made. Nonetheless, I'm shutting up on list now, for a couple of days. Cheers, Kerry. ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 974 *********************************
