I wasn't saying that I didn't feel that she shouldn't have been frightened, trembly, or clingly. Actually, I agree with you. The larger-than-life hero types that are never afraid of anything kind of bother me to tell the truth. What I was trying to express my annoyance/irritation at was how Misty handled Savil's moment of weakness. One minute Savil was the self-assured, tough-as-nails, and yes, somewhat crochety, old woman that we all know and love. The next she's a nervous wreck who doesn't even trust her own spells. I wouldn't have minded her moment of weakness if there had been a little more preparation for it. It just seemed to me like I got to that scene in the book and was faced with a whole new character (or one with MPD). Wow! I just realized - I finally found a topic that I can discuss intellegently and/or expound upon. I personally (and I have no problems saying this), am straight by "orientation", bisexual by philosophy. Orientation meaning, who I find attractive, in a physical/emotional manner. I am oriented towards men, but there are the females I dearly wish to get to know better. Oh well. I think the problem with bisexuality, both as a human condition, and as a literary convention, is the brain's tendency to think in extremes. Many people (not all, and not talking about this list, just people I know, in general), seem to classify things in extremes. "You are either gay or straight." "He is either good or bad" "She is either naughty or nice." It's a recurring theme in both literature and in the people I have dealt with. And, no, i don't have any degree or textevd to back it up, just my poor brain remembering the 1000 or so books I've read. It is something that we all have to face, that the world isn't in black or white.. good or evil.. gay or straight. There is a reason that the many of the physical laws contain continuums (is that plural right?:)). Extremes are few and far between, but it also seems that the human mind is very resistant to the idea of the middle ground. If I may digress a moment, from literary to political, it seems to show up most in elections. During a campaign, a moderate is praised for being a moderate, then after he/she/it is elected, they are called "wishy-washy" or "straddling the fence". I think that the same holds true, across the board, in human relations, be they literature, sex, or business related. We praise the quick decision maker, and deride the one who takes the time to make up their mind, or prefers not to make a choice at all. I think Misty possibly has fallen into this trap of thinking in extremes. So it may not even have occured to her what she has done. BUT, on the other hand, she is so insightful into the the problems of being gay in a homophobic society, that it is hard to believe that she hasn't thought of it. OR her personal experience with bisexuals could be with those of the Nevis type. I was going to try and do a Heather type essay.. because she lays out her points so well, and are so enjoyable to read, but alas, my new club is calling me, and I must work. er.. off topic question: I am starting an email roleplaying writing club, from the net, and was wondering if anyone would know where I could advertise this type of thing. It's NOT real-time roleplaying, it is creating personas, and then writing stories with your persona interacting with other personas. (I don't do good realtime roleplaying, I need time to think, write, and revise.) So if anyone has any ideas about where/when/how to advertise this on the net, let me know. (it's an orginal universe, came from my brain.. so no copyright violations) Thank you both for listening! ------------------------------------------------------------- Cara Smith nitebird-+AT+-ns.gamewood.net Relina, Queen of Teyle Riana, journeywoman Woodcrafter M'ril, rider of brown Liamith http://www.geocities.com/area51/5777 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Nov 1996 15:00:49 -0500 (CDT) From: Disney To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Just a note... Message-ID: <01IC5FKNJBDU002Q79-+AT+-ACAD.DRAKE.EDU> I'm starting to get goosebumps. Discussions that are going on with the list here are things I'm discussing in some of my classes. For example, whenthe discussion went around comparing the Empire and Valdemar to the Soviet Union and United States, or something like it, in my America as a World Power class (a history class with a strange professor) we were discussing the Cold War and America being 'afraid' of Communism because it's not US. Then, here we are in this bi-/homo-sexual discussion (which, BTW I'm getting a lot of insight about since til recently i didn't know anyone of either type) I had to read _Annie on my Mind_ for my Human Development class (for my education major). That book, for those who've not read it, is about a girl who's a senior in high school discovering her sexuality, and the fact that it is not accepted in her community and how she dealt with being a lesbian, etc. These parallels to my classes is STRANGE...like some kind of psychic thing. *grin* Disneyworld <> High Priestess of Sensitivity "Disneyworld" worshipper of the Mouse All HAIL the MOUSE! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Nov 1996 15:31:17 -0600 From: Meredith Hines To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: re: on being bisexual Message-ID: Bright the Day, all! I quite agree, and I think part of the reason this is the case is that people like to compartmentalize their lives and views - to put "labels" on people. They then have preconcieved notions of how to treat people with a certain label. For example, they treat children one way and adults another. They treat their friends differently than their parents, plumbers one way and lawyers another, and this extends into the gay/straight labeling as well. A bisexual is an unknown quantity to many people, and it makes many of them uneasy. (They have to invent a new category, poor things...) I know there are people who relish a new and unknown situation, but I haven't met too many of them. Perhaps Misty simply doesn't want to tackle a character who's ideas and behavior patterns don't follow ones already established? (Actually, I kinda doubt if that's the case...) No, actually I understand how *you* wouldn't have heard of her, but fans of regency romances and clasic british literature, *know* who she is. She was a *extremely* talented author, *not*, I repeat, *NOT* A Little Hack Writer No-One's Ever Heard Of! I'm sorry, but being a fan of her work, this rather rude, ignorant statement, um, enrages me. This isn't a flame, but Kory, *please* read some of her work before you form an opinion. I realize that the language will probably be as incomprehensible as Shakespeare, if you don't understand his stuff. But *saying* something like that is like daring the Jane Austen fans on the list to flame you. Go, read them, now. Or at least don't say anything about subjects you know nothing about, please? Don't make your High Priestess yell at you, this opens her up to getting lightning flung down on her from her god. ============================================================= Lee pointed out (inreference to a recent post of mine): > NightShade wrote that someone on this list said Van was a whiner, > etc, which would be fine except that since no one is named, no one can > defend themselves by saying "Hey, I think you misunderstood me, I'm sorry > if I gave you the wrong impression but what I really meant was, etc." or > "But what I said is justified because etc." Whoever has been recently > accused or implied to have slandered Van may well have read Nightshade's > (and others') post, winced and thought, "Is that about me?" and not known > whether to risk sounding defensive by defending themselves, or risk > letting people go on thinking they said something mean-spirited about Our > Hero. Ooops . Well, I think I had a reason for not saying the person's name, didn't want them to take it as an attack or something. But you're right, I should have attributed the statement, although that is *exactly* what they said, among other just as nasty things. I can't remember the name now, trigger happy deleting finger and all that. However, in future I will try to remember to put attributions in, especially when making accusations, 'kay? It was a net-rumor book seen as a possible sequel to the other OATH.. books, since Misty only wrote two novels, and people must have expected three or something. VOWS AND HONOR is only a duology; I have it on good authority (Misty herself) that she plans no book called Oathblinded in the future. She's got a mess of Tarma and Kethry stories, yes, in all those Sword and Sorceress books. But there is no current book called OATHBLINDED out and there is not expected to be one. This is the one time that I, humor God, am being serious. We got a little carried away with this last time, and we confused a lot of people on list about it. Oathblinded. Doesn't exist. ///// Misty RP: Well, it's illegal, technically, unless Misty signs a waiver for it, and she won't. (See rest of message) I think Kerry (forgive me if I'm wrong) or Mel the Listmistress said something along the lines of IF YOU DISCUSS IT, DISCUSS IT OFFLIST. The list can get in trouble for propogating it. There is one person I know of who worked on one, for personal use only. Russell Galen is Mercedes Lackey and Larry Dixon's agent. He has made the following statements in a general post to alt.books.m-lackey, dated in October 1994. Any use of works by Mercedes Lackey and Larry Dixon in fan fiction or a role playing game is strictly prohibited. The reasons are as follows: A. It is copyright infringement. Any unauthorized use of intellectual property, whether or not for profit, is copyright infringement. B. The authors are against it. Knowing that strangers are making use of one's world, one's characters, one's creations, is usually a very unpleasant feeling, one of violation and intrusion. C. There's been a great deal of discussion here as to whether a MUSH or MUD would help or hurt the salability of commercial game rights. The fact is, we don't know. It might have no effect, or a ruinous effect. There is ample evidence for both from other media, and I don't know the answer. Given that uncertainty, we have to err on the side of caution and protection. D. All of us on this side have discussed this and are resolved to take no chances with these valuable copyrights, and will vigorously pursue all legal means at our disposal. Also, any action we might take would not be limited to individuals but to the universities and other organizations that permit their equipment and lines to be used for this illegal purpose. E. Yes, we're greedy and narrow-minded in defense of our clients' ability to make a living. This is Mercedes Lackey's job. Anything that threatens her ability to make a living is no less an evil than any other situation in which an innocent party is forced, by the actions of strangers, to fight for her livelihood. So, please, folks - Just Say No to Lackey-MUDS. If you want to write Fanfic, please send mail to Queen's Own and request a release form. Don't go doing something that you're going to wind up regretting, later. Here I can help. There is one book, I do not remember the author, but the title I believe is _Fires of Agar_, or somesuch like that. I read it a year ago, and I liked it... the entire story is basically about shaych females. I picked it up to read because it had a wolf on the cover. :) But it really is a good book. However, if those who have emailed me do not mind this discussion to be public, then I don't mind it either. But they will have to say so to all of you before I go posting any conversations, or any of my questions to them. And I won't waste list space posting my questions in the open--i figure if someone wants to discuss it with me, then they'd email me privately, or let me know over the list. Since the only response I've gotten has been private, I can't bring it into the public atmosphere without that person's permission.
