Also, Companions usually live long enough to say their farewells, Yfandes said as much in Oh gosh, which was it, Mprice or promise?? Um. Well. I guess I won't find the textevd now, but I'll try to find it later, but it was when one of the Herald-Mages died and the Companion was found dead in a corner of the Field. Also, there is another special circumstance of Companion outliving Herald--The Monarch's Own Companion will chose another, IIRC. I like to know who's dating whom... but that's just nosy curiosity on my part, and I know it! I too would like to see more written on bi. A bi relationship or a bi trying to find one or... well... whatever, it would be an interesting read. If I can find something to say, something to reply to, or something, this will be an attempt at a braid. Note that I carefully said attempt--it's fairly late and my brain isn't working at all well. ;) Lotza people have been talking about MZB and Anne McCaffrey, and I have to say that while I love McCaffrey books, I never really got into MZB. I think that I'll try again w/a different book and see if I have better luck now, I tend to like different books at different times. Someone else(apologies for not remembering names...and I don't have it to hand to quote from) asked about the first Misty book we read. Mine was Magic's Pawn, reccommended to me by someone I met in a bookstore who told me it was a really good book if I didn't mind, and I quote, "The main character is gay". I loved the book, loaned it to my then-boyfriend-now-fiance who loved it as well, and kept reading... To join the discussion of spending my life's savins in a bookstore, I admit to being guilty of the habit... Although the last time I went in, I only *ordered* a book rather than bought it. Ok, well, it isn't MUCH of a braid, just joining in ongoing discussions and not quoting anyone or anything neat like that but I think that I will try braiding more in the future now that I kinda have a few ideas for how I can go about it! Kory was *joking,* it should be *obvious* that any semi-literate cretin is aware that *people have bloody well heard of Jane Austen.* And Kory is certainly not a semi-literate cretin. (BTW, your "I can understand how *you* wouldn't have heard of her" comment was, shall we say, unnecessary. At best.) His downplaying of Austen's reputation was a lighthearted response to someone's slightly sheltered query as to whether the movie Sense & Sensibility had been based on a book. Get it? Ha ha? Well, *I* understood you, Kory. I didn't get the feeling that Eric Banyon was just realizing his own bisexuality. I got the feeling that he was a straight guy who just happened to be in love with a supernaturally good-looking man. My point was that with both he and An'desha, it isn't *men* they want, per se, it's *one particular man.* I was just rather suspiciously wondering if Misty used that as a kind of "excuse" for their behavior -- i.e. not having the common decency to pick a gender and stay put. Maybe nothing of the sort was intended. Hmmm, there's a thought. You know something? Maybe I *will* write a book with sexy gay women in it. It's an idea worth considering.... Target date for my first book? 'Bout three years -- one to finish it, one to find a publisher, one for production. Realistic target date? Who the heck knows? What she said. Cara said (after some comments on the ambiguity of life): >>>Thank you both for listening!<<< Both? I think more than just two people are interested in what you have to say. Actually, there's this scale (I don't remember its name) that measures how gay or straight you are. The distribution on this is like the bell curve, so that there are actually very few absolutely completely gay or straight people, whereas most people are somewhere in-between. Somebody help me out, here? I've only heard of this thing through the grape vine. Nightshade encouraged me to expound away on my gripes concerning biphobia. I think a lot of it was covered in Heather's essays (strong as ever, girlfriend), but if I happen to find something that she missed, I won't hesitate to put it out here. I do wish profoundly that Misty would tackle it. Star said: >>>I have had a Thought! Could Korendil count as bi? He seems to have no qualms either way, being attracted to both Eric and Beth... So there's a yesnomaybe for ya'!<<< The problem with holding Kory up as an example of being bi is that the sceptical reader will say, "Yeah, well he's not even human!" However, if this same reader is thinking that elves are soulless, and that shows that only rutting animals are queer or some fuzzy logic along those lines, I don't know how they managed to make it all the way through any Misty books without a significant change to their outlook. Heather said: >>>I was just rather suspiciously wondering if Misty used that as a kind of "excuse" for their behavior -- i.e. not having the common decency to pick a gender and stay put. Maybe nothing of the sort was intended.<<< And, of course, my reaction would be "why is it "common decency" to pick one gender and stay put?" Hopefully enough people saw this sentence the way I did, and said "Commen sense isn't," to themselves, and started wondering even more why Misty hasn't attacked this "common decency" and shown that one doesn't *have* to pick one and stay put. >>>Hmmm, there's a thought. You know something? Maybe I *will* write a book with sexy gay women in it. It's an idea worth considering.... <<< CONSIDER, please? In fact, do more than consider. I'm very interested, and would actually pay the $30 CA for a hardback book of yours. Especially if it were autographed... :) :~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~ I've noticed quite a few people saying things like, "I've never known any queer people before." At first, my reaction has been, "That's hard to believe, we're all over the place, and it's hard to be that well closeted." Then, I thought back to where I grew up, and realized that's not necessarily true. SAPPY PERSONAL STORY WARNING The town I grew up in (in Saudi Arabia) is pretty conservative, and a lot of people are ultra-fundamentalist-Christian in response to the repression from the government (heck, we've got a few born-agains). It's also a very small town, 500 people?, and everyone knows everyone. All I knew was that "gay" was for guys and "lesbian" was for girls, and these were insults. Then, when I came to boarding school in the States, Winter gave me the LHM books to read. I read those, and at first, I was saying, "People can feel that? I never thought of that at all." Of course, due to the way Misty handled it, I didn't come away believing being queer was evil. Of course, when one of my friends then told me she was shaych, I realized it happened in real life, too, and actually started questioning my own sexuality. I would join in on the discussion about reactions to coming out, and so on, but I'm still closeted where it counts (family). I don't try to change my personality or anything, and if someone asks if I have any boyfriends, I'm as likely to say, "No. No girlfriends, either." If someone asks me point-blank, I won't lie. But I don't go out of my way to say anything. But then again, I don't think my natural personality is something that stands out and screams, "Gangway! Queer woman comin' through!" If you actually made your way through that muddle-headed statement, I'm impressesed. :~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~ Sandy said: >>>Now, I know that when Deniz wrote the following she was talking about personality types, but I laughed right out loud. Could Korendil count as bi? He seems to have no >qualms either way, being attracted to both Eric and Beth... So there's >a yesnomaybe for ya'! "attracted?" I thought it was slightly more than "attracted." IMO, the Californian Elven Culture is pretty much like the tayledras (except less exotic. WHen you borrow from everyone, it's hard to be, since everyone wouild see *something* familiar, usually, right?), in this respect. So to him, loving someone for who they ARE, and not for what sex they are, is what's important. (Mwehehhe...used incorrect grammar;> someone and they;> I'm happy.) I say he's equally in love with Eric and Beth, 'cept they toned it down in book 2.
