I actually pick up the book most suited to my mood of the time. There are Velgarth books I have not reread yet, and others I have read zillions of times (MPawn and BTS, for example). BTW, in response to Kat's question, my first Misty book was Oathbreakers, but simply because it is the only one that has found its way to Uruguay yet, and I DID enjoy it very much, enough to make me want to read more Misty. Then I found MPawn and MPromise in Buenos Aires, and after that I simply had to read the rest. Bought some in the States and have been ordering from Future Fantasy thereafter. Message-ID: <23NOV96.24255463.0067.MUSIC-+AT+-ACADEMIC.TRUMAN.EDU> Guys, the Kinsey discussion wasn't *that* bad, was it? I remember Cennydd kinda snowing me under with analysis I could only sort of trace, but other than that I think it was nonthreatening. Kinsey was a researcher in the field of human sexuality who did a number of studies in the, I think, 40s and 50s. One of his conclusions was that people do not have simply one sexuality or another, like a switch thrown, you're gay, you're straight. He theorized a spectrum of sexuality, ranging from compeletely heterosexual to completely homosexual, and further theorized that (whether or not it's *exactly* a bell curve) the majority of the population fell somewhere in between the two extremes. It's a generaly recognized construct of human sexuality in the field, and it's even fairly popularly recognized by the mainstream. He divided his scale into roughly seven segments, each having a number, 0 being totally heterosexual and 6 being totally homosexual. That's what you're hearing when you hear about Kinsey 4s or Kinsey 1s or whatever. Now, watch me be completely wrong. Haven't researched this in four years, and have probably forgotten everything I used to know about it. God knows I've forgotten everything that was said in the discussion last spring. (Okay, I'm willing to count Korendil as bisexual, sure. 42 books, one character, no sweat.) BTW, Nightshade. Sorry if you thought I flew off the handle. I wasn't upset because I thought you were "stupid" for not getting Kory's joke. I just thought you said some kinda harsh things to him, that would have been harsh even if he had been serious. And -- hang on now, I did *not* attack Nightshade. I told her I thought she should calm down, and that I wasn't real thrilled to see her insult Kory, but it was all very calm and mellow. Hmph. Kind of comments. Me, too... And don't worry about babbling, I babble all the time, like a brook. I should use something like Brook for my handle... I said: >I have had a Thought! I say > he's equally in love with Eric and Beth, 'cept they toned it down in book > 2. Ok, ok, ok, but I meant attracted from the beginning, w/out even getting to know them really well first. And it's true that the cultures are different so it's accepted(that's not the word I want but it will do) so he can be open about it, but the example popped into my head. See kinda what I mean? Summersong inquired: > WHO'S GOING TO SEE > FIRST CONTACT????? I'm going Sunday! Saw it at 11 am Sat morning, LOVED IT! My fiance said it didn't have enough action for him but that he enjoyed it. Ok, well that's all the replying I have to do, it looks like! Obmisty? Well... Um. Guess I have to drag my over-taxed brain out and inquire into some stuff. Where can I find short Misty stories? I have some of the Sword and Sorceress anthologies, and I'm getting Horse Fantastic soon, and I have a couple Catfantastic, are there any others? Um... how about another one. Elvenbane: who liked it? If you could change form like the dragons, what would you chose to go about as for a while? Would you rather be human, elven, halfblood, or dragon? Does that count? I hope so! As she puts it, she is not attracted to a particular sex, she is attracted to individuals and physio-sex doesn't even enter into it. Of course, she is hardly typical of bisexuals except inasmuch as she has a very idiosyncratic and personal definition of her own sexuality. I think that it is entirely possible that An'desha was bi (although, I get the feeling that he is going to end up being somewhat asexual as he enters his new service). Of course, the whole question of what label a character should be given is sort of counter to the idea that sexuality is a personal identification (okay, I realize that as purely fictional creations, they aren't capable of having their own personal identities, but you know what I mean). > Hmmm, there's a thought. You know something? Maybe I *will* write a > book with sexy gay women in it. It's an idea worth considering.... While you are working on it (and I think you should write it), you might want to read R.A.Rivkin's books (Silverglass is the only one I can remember the title of). One of the two main characters is a very sexy, sleek lesbian (with a equally sexier het partner). The books are pretty good (Silverglass is alternately cool and creepy and both at the same time). -----EOM/BOM On Sat, 23 Nov 1996, Deniz wrote: > Actually, there's this scale (I don't remember its name) that measures > how gay or straight you are. The scale is the Kinsey scale, and it doesn't exactly measure how "gay" or "straight" you are. It allows researchers to assign a numerical value to certain behaviours. Amoung other things, there is no such thing as "bisexual" on the scale. There is only a value (3) where a persons heterosexual experiences are in perfect balance with their homosexual experiences. > The distribution on this is like the bell curve This is actually a misconception, I think. At least, the only claim that I know that has been strongly made about the distribution on the scale is that 10% of the population in Kinsey's study were located on the homosexual end of the spectrum. To be honest, I don't even know for sure whether Kinsey meant "homosexual" in the sense of "exclusively homosexual" or if he meant it as "more than a 3" on the scale. A couple of people that I trust, who are extremely qualified sexologists, have told me that he meant "exclusively" or "a Kinsey 6." Since recent studies seem to support that claim, I tend to accept it. As far as the bell curve distribution goes, though, when you look at what the Kinsey scale measures, it seems unlikely that a population distribution would be a standard curve. I would expect something more like a U-shaped curve. However, that is just my own hypothesis and I know of no clinical evidence, one way or the other. I would welcome hearing about it if someone has some, though. =) > Agar? As in the stuff that reeks like chicken that you cultivate > bacteria on? AAAAAaaaaaggggghhhhh!!!!! Run away!!!!! At least, that would be how in Standard French. I just found out that in Quebecois, "tu m'ennuyes" means "I miss you." In Standard, it looks like "you are boring me." Well, not big bunchies or anything, but some. I have enough problems convincing people on this list that I am not some horrible monster who lives to flame anyone who steps out of line. I don't! Really! =) I'm completely harmless (hmmm, well OK, fine, not completely, but mostly harmless). The only flames that I send are my patented, semi-humorous ones about excessive quoting. So far, no-one has said that they thought I was serious or mean, so I have continued them, since it seems to be a painless and non-negative way of dealing with a list-related problem off-list. Anyway, the point is, hmmm,...what was the point?... oh, yeah! The point is that however humorously intended (and Kory, I am not singling thee out, there have been a number of people invoking my name in similar threats), the threats using me that seem to be creating a negative expectation about me in list-members, particularly the new ones. I quess I just want to ask the list-at-large to please have pity on a poor, misunderstood, and beleaguered soul and not threaten dire things in my name. Hopefully, if the threats cease, people will be able to form a more balanced opinion of me (of course, for all I know, they may *still* think I am mean and a flamer, but at least it will be an unbiased opinion). And Kory, I hope that thou dost not take any of this as being directed at thee. Thou'st been having a hard couple of days, I know, and I am not in the least upset with thee (or anyone else). How could I be, after all, since I had not previously said anything on this matter? I just felt that it needed to be said, and thou gave me the perfect opportunity. My thanks. Besides, thou knowest that I love thee more'n I love mah luggage! =) -----EOM ObMisty: I really need one at this point. Hmmm. Okay, I am re-reading "Storm Warning" and I have to say that I think Misty actually does a very good job with insanity in the book. In fact, she does such a good job, that it doesn't even look like insanity until you step back and pull yourself outside the character position. Of course, the character I am talking about is Tremane. Does anyone else agree with me that the man is paranoid to the point of being delusional in SW? I know that we have some psych people on the list, so let me ask, what would your diagnosis be of Tremane's behavior? I am specifically thinking about his behaviour and thoughts just prior to and just after the first wave of the Mage-Storms hits. Well, having read the entire Storms trilogy, I do not think that Misty intended Tremane to be or even appear insane by anyone's definition. I do not think that certain major events in SB could have happened if he were. And about that I can say no more without heading into spoiler territory. Agar is extracted from a seaweed (read algae IIRC) and is used in the food industry as a gelling agent. It may be found not only in icecream but in beer, jams and jellies (sp?) of different sorts, all those powders to prepare deserts, etc., some kinds of cheese and fish products. Sorry, if this ruins anybody's apetite ;) Also, it is used in science/medicine/chemistry but not only for cultivating bacteria. It is also used in several kinds of chromatography and specially electrophoresis techniques. It is true it does not smell nicely, but the stench normally associated to a Microbiology lab (and I have never been able to get used to it the way you get used to other nasty odors) is not only/mainly due to agar, but to several other components of culture media and to metabolic products produced by the bacteria and fungi themselves. Well, it was totally off-topic and fluffy, but I just thought I would contribute defending agar's undeserved reputation as something horrible :) >Cen continued: > Well, of course, I love poetry. I tend to agree with Danya's viewpoint about Tremane not being insane. I admit to not having reread SWarning recently, but I have always felt that the poor guy was justified in his apparent paranoia. After all, the workings of the Empire as portrayed by Tremane's comments and the Emperor's own attitudes, were devious indeed. He is so used to looking at things in the light of the back-stabbing and power struggle common in the Empire that his conclusions sound plausible.
