It wasn't sarcastic, not really, more like, um, mock humility and subservience? K: Romylee? What you're doing now, with responding to multiple subjects in one email--that's a braid! A good one, too! Mylee: Thanks. Um, please, call me Mylee (until I can come up with a decent usename), Romylee is so... so... formal. Mylee: /me laughs. That would be a good one. "The (Mis)Adventures of Leslac the Minstrel" Wonder what happened to him after he got married off to that lady in Valdemar? On a more serious note, what would the book be about? Most Bards seem to stay either in Haven or get patronage from one of the high-ranking nobles. At least, that's what I get from reading the books. Someone (I forgot who) said it would be about how the Bards do something similar to what Stef did during Vanyel's time, but the book can't just be about this, right? Maybe a short story on Bards? Or a novella, instead of a novel? Or, start the book from pre-Collegium days, then talk about a Bardic student's life, gaining status, then going on to the "Bards revolutionize people's way of thinking" climax? **END** **Re: Effect of lifebond on Companions** Kat: do Companions have long lasting relationships? How does a lifebond between Heralds affect their companions??? Mylee: I think a lifebond wouldn't affect their Companions much. For one, not all H-C bonds are strong, so even if a H lifebonds, that wouldn't necessarily affect his Companion. Also, the pairings are not necessarily of the same sex, so if both Heralds have mares, well, it's kind of difficult. Maybe the two Companions will become more attuned to each other, maybe not, but in general, I don't think it will affect them much other than making them happy b/c their Chosen is happy. As for Companions with long-lasting relationships.... I have no idea. I'd say it's possible. **END** **Re: Gryphon series: good or mediocre?** I liked BG, and I haven't read SG. I agree with Rainwood about WG, the part with the Haighlei was just tedious. And Hadanelith was just ugh. I can't believe he was on Urtho's side. When I reread WG, I tend to skip over a lot of things. I think I like the Gryphon series just b/c there _are_ gryphons. I'm partial to sentient animals, I guess, which is also why I like the Mage Winds trilogy. Is Misty going to be writing any other Velgarth books? (If this is an overdone topic, sorry, I'm very very new.) SB seemed kind of conclusive to me. I hate it when a series ends, because I've gotten so used to it, I know the characters, and the setting is familiar to me. I guess she could always write prequels, like the Gryphons and LHM. **END** **Re: Fluff, yes or no?** I like fluff. Not chain letters, or things like that, but it's always nice to know more about what's going on with other people. It's sort of a reaffirmation that they _are_ people, they become more human, and not just some set of fingers typing away at a keyboard somewhere. **END** **Re: Dark Lord of Shadows a Ma'ar?** Korendil:Anyone else think the "Dark Lord of Shadows" was a Ma'ar? Mylee: Why not? It sounds conceited enough to be him. Oh hey, the song speaks of Shadowdancer and Sunsinger, right? And we have the Star-eyed, and Vkandis Sunlord. Coincidence? Maybe the Windrider song is allegorical? **END** **Re: Companions of those Chosen to be MO** Aistes: But still what happens to the ordinary heralds companion if he is chosen MO do they choose a new herald or do they die? Mylee: IMO, they'd choose a new herald. Companions seldom outlive their Chosen, and the Herald doesn't die anyway, plus if the bond is weak, then it can go and pick a new one. I don't know, the way I picture Valdemar, it doesn't seem likely to me that the Companions would let one of their own die just because the Herald was more urgently needed by the Monarchy. **END** **Re: Pets** Tygriss:You know, I've noticed that no one has any pets, domesticated or otherwise, Heralds or otherwise. Does anyone remember any of the books talking about an animal just kept for the pleasure of it? Mylee: I guess bondbirds don't count as pets.... Tresta already said something about cats. I think that since Velgarth has a somewhat medieval flavor to it, only the very wealthy can actually afford to have pets. The peasants have cats to kill the rodents, dogs for herding and guarding. If I had to do hard labor day after day and need to feed a family, I wouldn't spend my money on feeding anything that would be of no use. **END** **Re: Suggestion about Braiding and tone of voice** If the stuff won't fit in the subject line, maybe we can write WTL (way too long) or something like that on the subject, and then type the stuff on the first few lines of the main body. I think braiding is generally a good idea, otherwise, this post would have have been 6 separate, one-liner posts, which would clutter up everyone's mailbox. The tone of voice thing is a really good idea, if we use them often enough, we can abbrev. them, and ppl will understand, and I guess a "Guide to Abbreviations" could be included in the FAQ.... **END** Whew, long one. Hmm...can't remember the American equivalent, so work it out yourself! I love to read (doh. I also love music, I like to sing, and some of my favourite music, filk, stuff by HA (yeah!!), music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and some classical music. I play the piano pretty well, I like to think, and also the clarinet. But not as well. I love cats, and share 2 of them with the neighbour (meaning they look after the cats, and we spoil them outrageously ), and hamsters, and generally animals. It sounds conceited enough to be him. Oh hey, the song >speaks of Shadowdancer and Sunsinger, right? And we have the Star-eyed, >and Vkandis Sunlord. Coincidence? Maybe the Windrider song is >allegorical? /me sighs. Okay. The books state, clearly, that Rothas and Lythe actually existed and WERE heralds. Some disagree with this, as do some about how accurate Valdemaran knowledge is of Vanyel. But, imo, they were real. Maybe, just maybe, they took existing myths about the two gods and spliced 'em together. But considering that it says they were heralds, they had first names, and they saved an heir and went on to become really kewl heralds, I doubt they were all myth. Regardless of how much, according to some, knowledge degrades over time. IMO, any culture that has books written 1500 years ago (WoFury) will have knowledge of people who lived less than that ammount of time ago. >Whew, long one. Any suggestions on a usename? /me sighs. Cast your minds back to ...... eerm, oh grief - either BTS or the 1st Winds book - Selenay's twins. It is stated, fairly matter-a-factly by Elspeth that one will be Monarch the other Monarch's Own. That means one will get chosen by Rolan (or whatever Rolan maybe decides to call himself then - 'cos the MOC has not always been called Rolan). All fine and dandy, but we also hear someone - apologies, the brain is totally refusing to co-operate - saying about how there's going to be fights in the Companions Field over them in a few years (B-awful paraphrasing - but you get the general gist). Soooooooo, if the Companions know who's going to be MO, why fight over a shallow bonding that's going to be broken later on? AND, ...... it's said in Arrows that Tavir (Talia's predecessor) had hoped that either Sheryl or Doodit (her twin) would have been chosen when he died. But we also know that Sheryl has one of the tightest bonds with a Companion, which don't sound like something that could be snipped apart to let Rolan in. I think that in the case of a mature, long bonded candidate, the MOC and the Herald's own Companion will have to share. If Florian can do all that he does for Whatsit - Thingy, um, Karal??, and *not* Choose, then why can't a Herald have two Companions in special circumstances? (Teren, Sheryl's twin, his name was Teren, not Doodit - the brain just unfroze for a millisecond). _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_=_= Firemist - thank you - here I am, trying to braid, reading the pets mails and thinking to myself, somewhere, someone sees a cat - and then kapow, pzat in drops your mail. Well, I'm just about to run out the door, and here I am mailing at the last minute! Afaik, getting a tattoo of Larry's art would NOT be copyright infringement. Just the act of taking it off paper changes it sufficiently. Also, if you aren't trying to make any money off of it, you aren't infringing on copyright protection laws. We just had our production company logo/name copyrighted, so this is basically what our lawer told us. According to our lawer, what you do with someone else's copyrighted *image* for PRIVATE use is okay. You just can't attempt to publicly display it (like, from a billboard, flyer, etc.) or make any sort of sale. Obviously this doesn't apply to fanfic, Misty-MUSH, etc. $.02 from Rainwood. I have no idea what Larry/Misty's lawers would say about it, but I think they'd be displeased - judging from how they've reacted in the past. Get your tattoo if you want but don't post it online, DON'T publish it in a tat 'zine, and don't try to sell anything with it. :) Now really, Happy Thanksgiving! I agree. Such an end would be cruel and also a terrible waste. It would be like saying you have done your duty and are no lenger needed. and Kory said: > Ele, I just built up a theory in around 2 minutes: The Companions take > note of possible Heralds, right? Hmm..Companions might > be involving themselves quite a bit deeper than they say... Kory's theory seems to make sense, but I do not much like the weak bond theory. The whole feeling I get about the HC bond is that once a bond is really established, however "weak", it cannot possibly be broken without serious hurt to one or both of the partners. IIRC, the only really weak bond we learn about is Shavri's with Taver (?), which is perfectly natural since she had not been Chosen as a kid, but had been Chosen possibly because of Randale's illness. Also, IMO, the way she acts is not exactly Heraldic, since she seems to put Randy's wellbeing before the good of the country as a whole, or of its individual subjects. The other cases are not really weak bonds, but lack of Minspeech mainly (such as Lores and Jenna(?)). So, I cannot imagine a real Herald Companion bond ever being weak. All Heralds recall the moment of being Chosen as The Paramount Experience of their lives. There seems to me to be a sort of soulmating in the HC bond. A lifebond in itself. It would therefore not make sense for a Herald to sever or weaken his bond with a Companion when he is Chosen MO. It would be like interrupting a lifebond in order to lifebond to somebody else. That makes me wonder. Talia seems to think a triple lifebond is possible. Could it be that in teh case of the MOC it would become a triple H-C-MOC bond?? I wonder if lifebonds could be something akin to the Judaic theory of sould dividing before incarnating. I delieve it is Judaism at least. If not, somebody please correct me. IIRC they believe that souls sort of split when incarnating, and that finding one's soulmate is actually finding the person who possesses the other half of your soul. It is not a theory I particularly share. I tend to believe in finding one's soulmate, but do not think of it as a part of one's own soul, but rather as somebody taht is necessary for this lifetime's growing process, and who may perhaps ahre more than one lifetime with us.
