If I understand you, Wintershard, you are asking for the difference between Companions and horses, besides the fact that Companions are reincarnated humans with magical abilities. As reincarnted humans, Companions don't *act* much like horses at all. Different characters comment on this throughout the books- particularly the cleanliness of companions and the lack of , erm, leavings scattered around any place they inhabit. (Most horses are anything but tidy about that! . They don't live in herds, and so forth. Physically, from what little there is in the books on such things, Companions are entirely like horses. They eat what horses eat; they have the same blind spots horses have; the same reflexes and the same vulnerabilites. Horses are amazingly fragile, for the magnificent creatures that they are. All sorts of thngs can go wrong, physically. For example, I wonder if Companions ever colic? Or suffer contact dermatitis from too many hours in the saddle? Or get sick? We have never read about a sick Companion. Horses get sick; they are especially susceptible to respiratory ailments. But from what little Misty does say about Companions' physical makeup, they *are* horses in that respect......oh, one exception I can think of. Companion mares carry for nine months, and horses for eleven. But that's it. And of course, horses don't tap into the nodes, so they don't have the speed, endurance, or healing ability of Companions. But this probably falls under aforesaid "magical abilities". None of this is to say Companions are "better" than horses; despite their shape, we are just not talking about the same thing at all. Horses are magnificent, thinking, loving creatures, and there can absolutely be no doubt that they have souls. They are different from humans, but not less. :-) Go Gently, Tresta %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Tresta shena Jor'ethan "Love must live free." Sorta like people when you think of >it: given the ability to do so, most of us would rather live in a >community of some sort. I thank you Wintershard, for your kind words about my writing. :-) Please allow me to expound a bit on what I meant about herds. Companions, like people and many other creatures, prefer the company of their own kind. They *need* each other, emotionally, to remain stable. And so, Companions live together in the Field. But they do not live as a herd with a pecking order, dominant members, rules of engagement, and other related social behaviors of horses. Horses have a fairly rigid social order that is enforced vigorosly, so everybody in the herd knows who he is, and where he is going, so to speak. (FYI, the herd stallion is *not* the one in charge; the alpha mare is!! She makes all the decisions for the group. And foals born into the herd have the status of their dams.) Horses are herd animals. *They depend on the herd for survival*; they cannot be separated from other horses for long without suffering extreme depression and lonliness. Companions do not share this dependancy; they are more "human" in that they prefer to be with other Companions, but they will not go mad if they cannot be for a time. Human company is enough for them. (Think on Gwena, in Winds, with Cymry out in the snow with Wintermoon and Skif most of the time.) So this is why I said Companions did not live in herds. I did not mean groups; rather, I meant "herd" in the true sense as it applies to horses and their social order. I *still* have problems appreciating Faulkner the way I used to. But revenge was sweet;) I drew this terribly unflattering characterature of her during an espescially boring class and I think almost the entire senior class in my highschool got to see it. I also have been dating her son for the past seven months, so I routinely take her baby away from her (she's a jealous and dominating woman). Don't worry, she doesn't like me either. Sorry for the rant, I just wanted you to know that a bad english teacher can inspire hatred in anyone who loves books, but the important part is not to let them ruin your enthusiasm. As for the whole discussion of foresight as a sign of mage-gift, I think I agree that Kris probably had mage-gift, or at least some degree of mage-sight. His ability to sense energy is too conicidentally close to descriptions of mage-sight not to be. I don't know if that last sentence made any sense, but it's almost finals and you'll have to excuse me. I would also like to agree with whoever it was who pointed out that the range of your singing voice is really a matter of practice. I know that during the year and a half that I was taking formal lession, I was able to realize my range as a Mezzo soprano, and after a few years without constant singing, my range has gotten really rusty and has reduced itself to a very limited alto. Though range can be improved by practice, you either have the voice to become a professional, or you don't. I don't, and it took me quite a while to realize this. My voice is decent, when it's in practice, but I could never do more than chorus parts in community theater, and alot of the reason i got those parts was that I have a pretty good stage presence. My sight reading skills are also not up to snuff, and the combination of this has led me to put singing on the backburner for a while. I miss it, though. Hmmm... I suppose I need an ObMisty, huh? The message here is that there could be a bright future ahead of us. The issues that plague our society today, such as racism, religious conflicts, drug crimes, seem so minute in the backdrop of space. Sure, they have their share of problems, but their society tells us that we can work things out. We need to get to important issues rather than pursue the old, outdated, and narrow-minded issues as I have listed above. And someone else (sorry!) said that Trekkies are the customized costume crazies. I've never owned a Starfleet uniform, plastic phaser, communicator, etc. The term "Trekkie" came first, I think, but the Nitpicker's Guide for TNG was "Nitpicker's Guide for Next Generation *Trekkers*." Are there other planets in their system? Mylee: Didn't, um, the old Herald guy in LHM have an interest in astronomy? And wasn't there something about some heavenly bodies being in conjunction the night he died? I don't remember whether they were stars or planets that were in conjunction. Um, I don't know very many things about astronomy, but it seems that most discovered planets outside the solar system have been gaseous planets, so I'm assuming that Velgarth is like Earth. I'd think that there would be other planets in its system. My question is, do people think those planets are planets? I mean, before Copernicus, we thought that the solar system was geocentric. Do you think that the people in Velgarth think this way? That the sun and planets revolve around their own planet? Or would they have enough scientific knowledge to know what we know now? Oh, how many moons does Velgarth have? I can't remember if it was mentioned in the books. ~~END~~ ~~Re: bondbirds~~ >Jake: "How to the emotions bondbirds impress on their bondmates Compare to the emotions Companions send to their Chosen? Mylee: I'd always assumed that the Companion-Chosen bond was a full telepathic link (kind of like the Pern dragons) and that the bondbirds had a weaker bond. I think LHM said that Heralds seldom outlive their Companions, and vice versa, and in MW, it said that killing a bondbird would also hurt the Tayledras, but it didn't say anything about them dying. The little owls the mages keep don't live that long (compared to the hawks and eagles and the Companions) so when they die, the Tayledras would get a new one. So since the bond is weaker, the impressed emotions wouldn't be as strong. Oh wait, I just remembered something about Dawnfire losing herself in her hawk's fury when the gryphons got attacked. Hmm. My theory would be that it would depend on how much control the human has on himself, and how strong the emotion is. The Companions can also control the "leak" since they are intelligent creatures. But the stronger and more primal the emotion, the harder it is to control it. But the Companions can _still_ manage to control this, so their control, plus their Chosen's control, should minimize it. The bondbirds wouldn't have enough intelligence for this, so it's all up to the human's shields. So if the emotion is particularly strong and instinctive (like a raptor's bloodlust), it "leaks" to the human and since only the human is shielded in a bird-human bond, the human would feel this more strongly. ~~END~~ ~~Re: sympathize vs empathize~~ >Mat: No, no, you can sympathize, you just can't *empathize*. Mylee: /me smiles sheepishly. My English teacher would disown me. I think she told us that too, but I kind of forgot.... ~~END~~ ~~Re: inconsistencies~~ >Mat: Yeah, I think Misty just has tons of inconsistencies regarding Elspeth. Mostly in facts about her in Arrows contradicting things about her in Winds. Mylee: And in Arrows, Elspeth was pretty, but she was just average in Winds. Also, in Arrows, someone (Elcarth or Teren) said that there were funny things up North and that most people didn't believe in gryphons, but one of a hundred would see a gryphon bite someone's limb off/attack someone. I'm assuming those were Iftel gryphons, since the k'Leshya were too far away. This doesn't seem consistent with how gryphons are though, b/c they seemed like monsters in Arrows and they're not. Or could it be because someone saw a gryphon and the story was exagerrated as it got passed on? ~~END~~ ~~Re: 0Gender roles~~ >Jen: obMisty:Would you say that there are negative gender roles in Velgarth? Holderkin have such-and-such that women can/can't do, but they're strange anyway. But in general, is there a lot that seems to be male/fem oriented? Mylee: In Karse, women are also deemed inferior. Karal was surprised that a Commander of the Guards was female. Also, I think it was mentioned in a different book that most high-ranking priests were male. ~~END~~ ~~Re: nick~~ >Kory: Myles (why not Mylee? or Romylee? imo, those are better;>) Mylee: I felt like a Myles that day. Myles is bubbly, Mylee is more relaxed, Romylee is sedate *grin* ~~END~~ ~~Re: Net~~ >>Myles: I think something about the fact that the net distances you from people helps a lot. I mean, even if someone "rejects" you, it wouldn't hurt as much because you've never seen the person and it's just via e-mail. >Kory: Well...I know that once, when I acted really mean to a newbie, and two other oldies emailed me telling me to be nicer, it did hurt. I mean, in an embarassing sort of way. Still does, when I reread 'em last night looking at all my saved personal mail. Can't believe I acted so lame... Mylee: Oh, it _would_ hurt. I was thinking of it in a different context. Quiet people feel that they can offer their opinions and it wouldn't hurt as bad, or as long, if those ideas got shot down. If someone gave me a dressing down via e-mail and in person, I'd get more hurt if I'd been flayed in person. Also, even if I cry over something over e-mail, no one will see me crying. So the risk of rejection isn't as great, because no one knows me in RL, and I'll never see them in person. But I agree with you that e-mail _can_ hurt. Otherwise, why did that whole flaming discussion start? ~~END~~ ~~Re: musicals~~ >>Myles: I treated myself to Les Mis during Fall Break >Kory: You just raised considerably in my eyes;> I love Les Mis--not as much as Summersong does ST:TNG, but still a lot;> I liked Les Mis better, actually. Ms. Saigon just, well, wasn't very original and didn't have, imo, as strong characters... Mylee: I loved it too. I'd go again, but I can't justify the expense. >From the CDs, I agree that LM is better than MS. You can identify certain tunes in MS that are derived from those in LM. LM was just more powerful, the songs had more impact.... Thanks to Kawry and, um, someone else who suggested good musicals to watch. ~~END~~ ~~Re: Selenay~~ >Kory: the Sel & wosshisname wasn't an alliance thingy. I got the feeling he came because he was greedy, and Sel fell for his charm. It certainly wasn't advised by anyone in Valdemar ('cept maybe Orthallen)...and anyway, I got the impression that Rethwellan already was close with Valdemar... Mylee: Just thought of something. If Prince whatsisface hadn't married Selenay, there would be no Elspeth, no one would go off and find the Tayledras, and so on. ~~END~~ ~~Re: rabbits~~ Firemist: Does for horses what watership down did for rabbits, and plague dogs did for dogs.
