Hmm, maybe one of our gods does have godlike powers after all... ---- akiko(?) asked: Do they have a printing press in Velgarth? er, in MPromise, Van refers to "a printed broadside page". Do the bondbirds get raised from hatching(after they are taught to fly by their parents) by their bondmates, or are they just given to the bondmates when they are mature? I thought there was textevd in WFate that Darkwind had raised Vree practically from hatching, and other things of that nature. 2. Can a Herald, with te'yladras blood(sorry i butchered the name :)), be bonded with a bondbird? What Mat said: Probably anyone could bond if they had enough Mindspeech. But would a Herald really want a bondbird, say, in the middle of all the kinds of situations Heralds get into? I'd think that in some ways they could be a liability. Lady Windsong wrote: >> But for the bondbirds, I guess you feel the stronger emotions, like *hunger*, for example, but you have to link, or at least consciously try, with the bird to feel whatever else the bird is feeling.<< and wintershard said: "That's right. When Van first went to the Vale (IIRC), Moondance, Starwind, and Savil were talking up in Moon's room in the tree, something like: "Suddenly, Moon' started, and ran to the window, opening it. In flew both his bondbird and Star's, alighting on his outstretched arms. As Star's went to him, Moon seemed to look deep into his own bird's eyes. Then, he recalled to Savil what the bird had Said. "Now, this seems to me like the first impression that Moon gets is something akin to :danger: or :haste: etc., so he goes and opens the window to let them in. Then, when he looks into his eyes, he creates the link that allows him to fully understand the whole message. If he already had the full link, he would only have started, and told Savil what the bird had relayed, and not opening the window at all. Plus, the bird would have followed Van (I think that's what it was for) first and foremost, and told Moon where Van was." But Savil quiets down while M & S communicate with their birds because they are distractable--which leads me to think that communication with the birds is possible but not optimally useful under conditions where the birds might get distracted. M & S might have been able to get something out of their birds (probably particularly emotion) even when the birds were flapping outside the window, but to get the message it would go quicker if they caught the birds' undivided attention. Hm, what am I trying to say that's different from what Wintershard said? Oh, yeah: It isn't necessarily a tighter communication or a full vs partial link that makes a message easier to pass (that's what I understood Wintershard to be saying), but rather a matter of getting the bird focused on the task at hand. (It was a message of a cold-drake sighting, not a Vanyel-sighting, and the birds did seem to tell M & S where the drakes were, I thought.) --------------------------------------- emily the invisible said, " With Moon. All I was trying to say was that they don't depend on each other, *in the way of horses* for survival. I'm sure they do depend of each other emotionally. They need the company of their own kind, as any other sentinent creature does. But in the books we see them do without for short times (Gwena, Yfandes, Cymry) and while they are glad to be with other Companions again, their lives are not threatened by having been apart. And I'm not sure what point you were making about Rolan; he *did* have Tantris, unless you were a) referring to company of another kind or b) stating that one Companion was good, but more were certainly better. . The former type are also greetings but are inquiry greetings. They require an answer, rather than a repition. Example of a hail: A: Hello. B: Hello. Example of an inquiry greeting: A: Wie gehts? or A: What's up? B: Ganz gut. B: Not much. BTW, the English is *not* a translation of the German. Languages vary on which type of greeting they prefer, some choosing the hail, others the inquiry, and still others with a wish-type, such as "Good day," which acts as a wish for the other to have a good day (at least, that is the original meaning). In many languages, all three types are present, but one type is more common and less remarkable in normal conversation. This is what linguists call the unmarked form. In English, the unmarked form seems to be the hail. Other languages may choose differently. For example, the unmarked greeting in Japanese is the wish type: ohayo gozaimasu/konnichi wa/konban wa are all ways of saying "have a nice morning/day/evening. ObMisty: based on the prevalence of "heyla" as a greeting, I would tend to say that Valdemaran languages (particularly of the Kaled'a'in family) tend to use hails as the unmarked greeting. Of course, if they'd been as hard to destroy as portrayed in earlier shows I guess it would've been a darned short movie, huh? ------ Emotions &c.: Jake brought up the question of whether the emotions from a bondbird--primal--were stronger or those from a Companion--mental. I spend a lot of time categorizing things, and one of my category sets is Physical/Emotional/Mental/Spiritual. So I think that emotions are not related to intellectual development, and therefore their strength is independent of the emoter's (?) intellectual complexity--in other words, there shouldn't be a difference in what one feels from a bondbird vs. a Companion. I think Companions could provide much more detailed impressions, but not particualrly more or less intense. Of course, I suppose Companions' minds are more similar to humans', so maybe their sendings would seem clearer or stronger just coz they are more similar to what we're used to. Hmm. Hate it when i start arguing with myself! ------ btw, you should all feel special--you're the only people I'm speaking/listening to right now. I've sealed myself in behind a suitably chill shield of ice for the winter and don't intend to let anyone else inside for quite awhile (broke up with a boyfriend several weeks ago and trying desperately to PROVE to myself that I can survive single, I can, I think I can do this. . . just not fun). I think I'll post this b4 it gets too long and write more later. --vix, Goddess of Water ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Dec 1996 18:00:50 -0500 From: Rozanna McNeer To: "mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk" Subject: Reply to: Tayledras Message-ID: <199612061801_MC1-CB5-F5DC-+AT+-compuserve.com> >Would anyone have the complete listing of the Tayledras launge(sp) on >hand? If you do w search on lycos or alta-vista for shin'a'in, you come up with 8 entries. the one that's got amethest something-er-other in the URL has a compiled shin'a'in, kaled'a'in, and tayledras lexicon. I haven't been to that site in a few months, but hopefully it is still up. Also, Gyr *did* have a simliar lexicon. It'd be in the archives somewhere in Feb-May wait... went downstairs and dug it out. Understand, now, that I was 13 before I realized that Joplin's name wasn't "Janice Baby" -- that's what we all called her in my family If you haven't guessed, I'm a big fan. This goes on my list right along with the Elfquest movie, the Joan of Arc movie with Jodie Foster, and the movie version of Rent directed by Martin Scorcese. You know, I really cried more at Miss Saigon than I did at Les Miz. I only cried when Fantine died, and a little when Gavroche died. But I probably spent all of Miss Saigon in tears the first time, and I was literally sobbing at least twice ("Fall of Saigon" and "Please"). I also cried at the end of Kiss of the Spider Woman (Valentin, witnessing Molina about to die to protect him: "Don't! I'm not worth it!" Molina, in this strange, lost little voice: "Wouldn't it be funny if that were true?") and during the reprise of "I'll Cover You" in Rent. So I'm posting *this* one. Shin'a'in, Tayledras, and Kaled'a'in Word List ============================================================= Way back when, hundreds or maybe even thousands of years ago, there was a war between two wizards, called the Mage War. It changed the face of the land forever, warping the magic and the landscape. On the side of the mage fighting for good, Urtho, were a people called the Kaled'a'in. They used magic as much as anyone, and specialized in the breeding of horses and bondbirds. When both mages, Urtho and Ma'ar, were destroyed, the home of the Kaled'a'in was transformed into a lifeless crater. The Kaled'a'in were of two minds as to what they should do, and eventually they were sundered into two peoples: the Shin'a'in, who vowed to do without magic and to reclaim their home from the wastes, and the Tayledras, who wished to continue using magic, and to try and live in the nearby Pelagir Hills and Pelagiris Forest. The Shin'a'in would continue with the horses, and the Tayledras would take the bondbirds. Both sides found it impossible to win their battle for a home. Eventually, both prayed to their goddess, Kal'enel, the Star-Eyed. She asked a heavy price of both of them. From the Shin'a'in, She asked a vow to forswear magic forever, except for Her shamans. They were to guard the artifacts of the war, and make sure that they never fell into the wrong hands. In return, She changed the waste into a grassland, the Dhorisha Plains. >From the Tayledras, She asked them to heal the damage done to the lands by the war, and to make this their primary goal. In return, She taught them how to tame the lands of wild magic enough to make a home there. Not too long ago, the Shin'a'in and Tayledras, by now very different people, met with the last remaining Clan of the Kaled'a'in-- k'Leshya, the Spirit Clan. And now, all three are working together against a magical catastrophe that may be destruction for all of the Kingdoms. beginning text by Amethysta Silverflame Pronunciation ' glottal stop ai as in air ay long `a' as in way ah soft `a' as in ah ee long `e' as in feet ear as in fear e as in fend i long `i' as in violent oh long `o' as in moat oo as in boot Language of the Shin'a'in ========================= ae I corthu one being datri have, has dester'edre wind(born) sibling dhon very much du'dera (I) give (you) comfort enar bright for'a'hier Firefalcon for'shava very, very good get'ke (could you) explain gestena thank you hai yes hai shala do you understand? hai'she'li surprised yes, literally "yes, I swear!" hai'vetha yes, (be) running her'y (is this not) the truth isda have you (ever) seen (such) jel'enedra little sister jel'sutho'edrin horses, literally "forever younger siblings" jostumal enemy kadessa rodent of the Dhorisha Plains Kal'enedral The Goddess' sword-brothers or Her swordchildren Kal'enel the Warrior aspect of the four-faced Goddess, literally "Sword of the Stars."
