Let me clarify: I know the treaty they were talking about was made in Vanyel's time; it's mentioned in the first chapter of MPrice. I thought the bad vibes he & co sensed from it were due to the things that were going to happen in Selenay's time--that's what I was trying to say. Though it may be a bit of a stretch to think that they'd all be sensing something from Hardorn 700yrs in the future. Jen also said, "I think it was Rethwellen...Remember, the friendliness of R and Valdemar didn't happen until Kethry and Tarma put whatshisface on his throne, right? 'course, I haven't read _Oathbreakers_ or whichever that story is in yet...But, in Van's time, Karse was Public Enemy #1 and there wouldn't have been any treaties...And Rethwellen is just sorta there.... But I don't remember for sure...It MIGHT have been Karse still...[snip] "But it wasn't Hardorn that the treaty was with at the time that you guys are talking about, i think that if it had been, it wouldn't have been bugging the Foreseers. Didn't after the Web spread to all the heralds that everyone would know where the danger was from and what to do about it and stuff? so if it was Hardorn in Elspeth's time, the foreseers would know what the prob was or someting? (grasping at straws here)" Lemme state my reasoning: In the middle of MPrice, Van goes off to Rethwellen to negotiate the a treaty; this takes place after he & Stef got together but before everything got so bloody depressing. The treaty we're talking about is a different one, mentioned when Van is recalling how Jisa guessed he was her father; she was twelve or so at the time, which puts it *years* before Van meets Stef. Now, if the Treaty In Question were with Rethw~, why would Van have to go on that looong ambassadorial mission in the middle of the book? Okay, so sometimes nations do have to make multiple treaties within short periods of time, but I think it's unlikely. Relations with Retw seem pretty stable. Yes, it probably wouldn't be Karse--its internal politics were too unstable, aside from the little matter of a holy war. That leaves Hardorn. Hardorn only gets mentioned in LHM in vague references to Van's "Demonsbane" adventure and (I think) as the other party to the Treaty In Question... Hm. Maybe I just ought to get the textevd myself. Hokay. Back now. MPrice p 17: "Vanyel had looked up from the proposed new treaty with *Hardorn.* He had the odd feeling that there was something hidden in the numerous clauses and subclauses, something that could cause a lot of trouble for Valdemar. He wasn't the only one--the Seneschal was uneasy, and so were any Heralds with the Gift of ForeSight that so much as entered the same room with it." [emphasis mine] ------ girl-who-still-doesn't-have-a-name said: "just commenting on the lysistrata thingy... i know there were a LOT of innuendos, and i want to know if anyone else caught them, or i just have a sick twisted mind and made them up." hi! I'm the one who brought up Lysistrata--our class just now read it aloud in this imitation Roman ampitheatre we have on campus (named, quite cleverly, "The Greek Theatre"). Lots o fun, for the women at any rate. I don't know what translation you read, but your translator must have been rather shy; in our version there's absolutely no doubt that "Spartan cipher rod" & such are *meant* to be...suggestive. ------- vix: "Of course, there're the ones a friend of mine and I want to release on an album entitled "One Hell Of A Christmas," such as the Evil Christmas Song--"Children roasting on an open fire, demons nibbling at your soul; praises to Satan being sung by a choir, and folks afraid to leave their homes. . ." That's sick, young lady, absolutely sick! ------ vix again: "Jake brought up the question of whether the emotions from a bondbird--primal--were stronger or those from a Companion--mental. I spend a lot of time categorizing things, and one of my category sets is Physical/Emotional/Mental/Spiritual. So I think that emotions are not related to intellectual development, and therefore their strength is independent of the emoter's (?) intellectual complexity--in other words, there shouldn't be a difference in what one feels from a bondbird vs. a Companion. I think Companions could provide much more detailed impressions, but not particualrly more or less intense." your reasoning makes sense; I think that in RL P/E/M/S is a false dichotomy-- you can't separate those things from each other-- but in a world like Velgarth where Empathy is distinct from Mindspeech and Healing and (er, call it being god-touched), feelings could be communicated independently of thought & vice-versa. ------ Jake said: "Talia felt the ... urges of her Companion when he was doing the nasty with other Companions in the Arrows books. I can remember the scene, but not the page." Yes, Talia did get, er, emotional spillover from Rolan, but that was a special case; they can't shield each other out, as happens in all the other instances of a Companion (or a Herald) having sex that I can think of. With other bonded pairs, there *could* be spillover, but they usually choose to prevent it (unless they forget.) ------ "btw, you should all feel special--you're the only people I'm speaking/listening to right now. I've sealed myself in behind a suitably chill shield of ice for the winter and don't intend to let anyone else inside for quite awhile (broke up with a boyfriend several weeks ago and trying desperately to PROVE to myself that I can survive single, I can, I think I can do this. . . just not fun)." =( wttw, --Lee-- 97jsalaz-+AT+-uor.edu -- www.geocities.com/Athens/4709/ "What time is it?"--Dekker, P. / Knight of the OAM, Spreader of Humor, Self-Appointed User of 5-point Vocabulary Words Such As "Panegyric" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Dec 1996 21:37:14 -0500 From: Chris & Sean Talbot To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Tayledras Message-ID: <199612070237.VAA18734-+AT+-nemesis.idirect.com> At 02:38 PM 12/6/96 GMT, you wrote: >Chris & Sean Talbot wrote: > >> I have never seen anything like that. On this lovely Saturday morning, Hades said: > Has anyone wondered about the actual people of Valdemar? Many a time! I think the largest section of Valdemaran society has been almost completely neglected. I think a story that took place all in one little area, or even one town, would be kind of refreshing--norms don't have those marvellous tireless Companions, after all. I've also thought it would be very cool to take the concept of the downtrodden which she uses so well and put that directly into a non-Herald. She tells us all the time about the emotional salvation Heralds' Companions and even the Heraldic duties themselves seem to bring to the insecure, but I'd like to see her bring someone who didn't have that resource up into the day. I'm especially partial to misunderstood performers and hermit-y inventors, but just about anyone who didn't wear white all the time would be nice. Here's another one: I would love to see the story of someone who came to the--is it the Collegium for Heralds? I can't believe the blank I'm drawing--anyway, the Heralds' academy, and never got Chosen. That one could either find a niche in an entirely different occupation, healing or librarianism, or something really different, and still bring the honor-code s/he associated with the Heralds to it. Or s/he could become a great tragic character, always trying to prove him/herself worthy until death, when the Lady herself takes the poor person to be a personal servant. OR, s/he could turn over the years into a tremendously bitter sort who wants to undermine the whole Heraldic network. Or all of those together. And there's another story I'd like to see--a resistance movement against the Heralds. Surely somewhere in Valdemar's history there was some husband who thought his wife couldn't really have done that, or something. Or maybe a group who think the Heralds do magic, and don't trust magic even on "pretty white horses." And, I've always been fascinated by unique religious practices and beliefs. I wanted to be an archaeologist for quite awhile, specializing in ancient religiosity. So I think telling us about the clergy of someone's religion would be just lovely--could be a travelling sort of priest, or a monk taken from the monastary by an unorthodox calling to do his work in the world. (Have we even ever seen referencee to monks of any sort? They've got to be there, any organized religion eventually develops a group who stay in one place and study their spirituality--but I can't recall a single reference right now. They don't affect the story in any real way, except to establish Charliss' death, and Melles as new Emperor. Hmmm... Did anyone else cry when Florian died? I wish there had been more of Van, and I think that he and stef and fandes finally went on to the Havens to rest...for now, at least. and I think the scene when they come in is pretty good proof that Fandes isn't Grove Born, between the double image of a horse/woman and Florian's comment that Fandes' intimidates him more than a Grove Born does. I can't seem to find it right now, but i think there's something in one of the Arrows books where some Herald more advanced than Talia says to her that they aren't loved equally everywhere, or not always welcomed, or something of the kind. > mean, if we're going to say that the Companions are the one enforcing the > don't-think-or-talk-about-real-magic compulsion, then wouldn't it be > tiddlywinks to make themselves perceived as good? The one is a simple squelching of a particular thought, the other would involve actually implanting feelings. i kind of feel like it would be easier to keep something from coming up than it would be to make something happen. However, these are the Companions we're talking about, and they can do a lot of difficult things. So you could very well be right; I'd *still* like to see somebody disliking the Heralds, whether it was a fluke or a widespread movement. He first got scared about the monastery thing because he was afraid it would make a convenient method for getting him out of the line of inheritance--that in fact Withen was shipping him off to Savil so that Van would be out of the way while Withen looked for an appropriate monastery. re the priest in T&K, vix asked: "where did he come in?" Oathbound, near the end? T&K are in a tavern recounting the Thlkrsh (sp?) adventure to this monkish sort of guy, and then they go off & fight the demon again, and the monk (who turns out to be a very powerful mage) takes custody of the now-captured demon so that his order can test their belief that all evil things can, sooner or later, be persuaded to become good. ---------------- deniz said: "Have you been abml'ing? While reading the first book I noticed some sutelties(sp?) that I didn't notice when I first read it. One of the things was how many times Dirk was mentioned and also the mentioning of Lady what's her name(I looked through the book but I don't want to reread it again.) These were just some of the things I noticed. Then while working my way through AFlight I was thinking about how it would make more sense(at least to me) to have Dirk as Talia's counselor, but I realized that if that happended it would totally mess up the plot for the book and also AFall because while Talia was intering she would not be able to have her gift go rogue. I also realized that in AFAll Kris goes w/ Talia instead of Dirk. I had expected Dirk to go with but if that had happended it too would have ruined the plot for the book because misty couldn't have Kris get killed and then have Dirk take Teren's place after him and Talia are married. To me these things are what made misty a great writer because when I started the Winds tril and then sorta read the Stroms trli I never noticed these things. When I read those books I was pretty much able to comprehend both trils, and when reading the other books I had to go back and reread them. Disney states: >Everyone is comparing notes on how to say names from the Pern books, so >I thought I'd jump in here. :) > >It's funny when you think about it...In _The Second Weyr_, Torene is talking >to Sorka about how the dragons shortened the names of the riders cause it was >easier to say in a hurry. This is very true because I remeber(sp?) reading it(I took it from Emily). Torene then went on to say something like that the riders took on to saying the names this way too. THis is the whole reason for how thr rider's names are pronuced and written. If you really look at the names I have noticed that I can't pronouce them, but if i glance at them I can. This it because I don't think about how they should sound. If you think about how most of the names are written such as N'ton or F'lessan. At a glance I pronunce them Na ton and Flessan rather simple. On the Piemer subject. I would pronunce it either PIE mer or Pee mer. The reason that Kris was able to control Talia's gift was because he was a gift teacher. Dirk was a gift teacher too, and even though he taught fetching, that also could have been useful, even more so in the storm. They would never have had to worry about food because he could use Talia's eyes to find people by their emotions like she did when Ylsa died. > I also realized that in AFAll Kris goes w/ Talia > instead of Dirk. Isn't Dirk deathly ill with pneumonia at the moment when Talia and Kris go to Hardorn? Remember how weak he was when he insisted on riding with them to *meet* the envoys at the border? Ooooh, a thought. Do y'all think that maybe Aphrodie (Dirk's Companion?) had something to do with making her Chosen go to the border? Something like she knew that Dirk would be needed to save Talia and all of Valdemar. Kawryathen ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 07 Dec 1996 15:23:07 CST From: "Hth." To: Subject: trek salute/rebel Companions Message-ID: <07DEC96.16616210.0017.MUSIC-+AT+-ACADEMIC.TRUMAN.EDU> But who knows the origin of the Vulcan hand sign, the famous V shape with the fingers? What does it represent? Ark ark. *Now* we'll see who the real Trekkies are. I just have to act as a liaison briefly for my absent heartsister, who once had a very cool idea about Companions. Seeing as how they're people and can make mistakes (or so we're told), they probably have a few human motivations, even the less wonderful ones. What if the Companions were to get a bit cocky after having ruled Valdemar in peace and prosperity for all those centuries, and what if they didn't *want* mages coming in? "Don't you think we can handle it? We're the *Companions.* We take care of Valdemar; who needs stupid outlander mages? Have we ever let you down before? We're hurt, really hurt, that you would even consider the idea that we can't keep this situation under control." Think of it this way. You have a project at work that you've shed blood, sweat, and tears over, and it's been running smoothly the whole time you were responsible for it. Now there's one small glitch, something that needs fixing, and what's management's first response? "You obviously need an expert. Let's get someone else in here to teach you how to fix the problem." Wouldn't you at least say: "No, wait! Just gimme a couple of days, I'm sure I can fix it, no sweat, I just need a little time to examine the situation"? Deep down, you're thinking, "You freak. This is my project, and keep your hands off of it. If something needs to be done around here, I can do it myself." I just thought it would be interesting to see the Companions screw up for once, instead of being the All Wise Spirits looking over their Chosen's shoulders, checking for mistakes. And that's one pretty reasonable way it could happen, not because the Companions suddenly turn evil, but because they've gotten used to running things their way. Anyone ever been on a committee? How about that dreaded phrase: "But we've never done it that way before" or its corrolary "But we've *always* done it that way." If people can get rigid and inflexible, why can't Companions, just one time?
