Running the City Courts doesn't seem to be terribly interesting. I did think that the change was rather dramatic, but since she didn't seem to have close friends, it make sense. She didn't really have anyone to talk to, or anyone to trust, so she became much more introverted, and serious to a fault. I also detested Gwena. Way too manipulative for me. RE: Music This thread is pretty much over - I would just like to point out that as some people have natural talent for singing, others do have natural talent for picking up any instrument and learning to play very quickly. (I knew someone like that in high school). And, I must disagree with whoever it was said that "Any fool can learn to sing." Many, many people can just open their mouths and hit the notes - like many, many people can learn "Mary had a little lamb" on the piano or the recorder - but in order to truly learn to use the singing voice, it takes quite a lot of effort. Singing Range: yes, ranges definitely grow stronger with use. A few years ago, I was in a show that mainly used my low range, and I had to work at it for several days until my high notes became clear and strong again. In the opera/classical world, the voice type (soprano, mezzo, tenor etc.) is really determined more by where your voice is the most comfortable, sounds the best and is the strongest. i can hit low notes, but no one would ever call me an alto. Especially if they are accompanying > themselves.... I would certainly think so. That's something I've always envied singers--they can just alter keys to suit themselves, *and* they don't have to obsess about sharps and flats the way instrumentalists do. I'll never forget the first musical I worked on. The music was, of course, set for voice first and instrument second. I was working in keys with six or seven sharps (for the musically challenged, that's this # little symbol, and it means that the note is raised a half-step) at a time, which wouldn't cause a singer a second thought, but sharps strike terror into the hearts of flute players everywhere. My name is Adrianne and I'm 36 (birthday 24 June). I am a sole parent raising two children aged 12 & 8 plus a mother in her 60s who is often like one of the children! I run my own business teaching computers and doing typesetting. I also teach Writing for Children and I'm the editor of a writing magazine. I've had both poetry and short stories published and I'm working on my first novel. (Oh and my first article was published a couple of months ago). I've really enjoyed the singing/music thread that's been on list for a while. I'm a singer of sorts. In my teens I was a very high soprano and now I'm a very low alto (almost tenor!) I belong to a ladies choir and I'm the musical director of a female vocal quartet; in my spare time I direct a children's choir. These last few weeks have been really busy which is one reason I've been lurking a lot lately. In just this last week I had eight performances (Friday night's performance was broadcast on the radio) and it has been horribly hectic. Next week we do a charity performance for World Vision and the following week a concert for family and friends. As you may have gathered, I love my music or I wouldn't be doing all this! I am also one of the list's shaych members - finally accepted it after nearly ten years of marriage! I have now spent five wonderful years being myself and loving it! I didn't mention that I live in Brisbane Australia. On the list I am Lady Adrianne, High Priestess of the Goddess of Music and Song (my apologies to my Goddess for neglecting my list duties of late but the RL duties have seen music take a huge priority over everything else in my life!) Obmisty: I now have a full set of the Valdemar books and will slowly work my way through over the holidays. I've almost finished Fire Rose which I am enjoying. Did you know that Fire Rose has been nominated as SF Romance of the year? It's in the top ten and the results will be out in January. Happiness and beautiful music to all list members. Would Need come back as a Companion and have a name that may betray her origins? That's it for now -- sorry so short. I'm trying to keep my braids and spoilers separate so people can still read my posts and not get spoilers stuck between them. He looks like the hero out of a romance novel, all hair-blowing-back-in-the-wind, open-front-robe-to-show-off-chest, dramatic-pose, etc. Gah. Yech. Take it away. What I've usually ended u[ doing is talking to the director ahead of time letting him know that a seasonal concert is just that a *Seasonal* concert, NOT a Christmas concert. They usually agree to cut all the religious stuff and stick with the winter themed things. I always thought it was amazing how many Christmas carols have nothing to do with Christmas. ----------------- Kory wrote: >Hmm. Never seen that..maybe it's a conservative or orthodox thingy.. They still don't knoe about the Companions, do they? I know that the reader does, but I don't think that the characters do. I think that Need would feel contrary enough about the destinies that the Companions have in mind to let their secret escape. (wait, is that right Jag?) She just happens to be offlist for the moment (too much work to do). She can still be seen on the MageWars as Catherine Sundancer and Arithon of the Sunbolts (for the low, low price of $19.95!!!!! ).
