Don't be sorry. It certainly was *not* ! Along these lines, first let me say: "What Hth (Heather) said" :) That's exactly how I feel about it. Now, without getting into religiosity and scary things that tend to make people *really* nervous, I'd just like to say that when I hear any sort of song affiliated with religion, be it Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, or Hindu, I appreciate it for several different reasons. First, the music itself, which is often new to me in the way it patterns its harmonies, in its rhythms, even in the scale it uses, because it comes from a different culture. It's wonderful to hear these new things. Beyond that, the words, which aren't often very specific to the particular religion: "Glory to God in the Highest" shows up pretty much in all of those instances, no matter how you say it. Sure, they've got a specific god in mind, but *everyone* has a different idea of their god(s). What you're hearing is the composer's idea of who his god is, and it's not meant to represent everyone else's--it *can't*, because no one experiences god, or religion, or the lack thereof, in the same way. Lastly, and most importantly, the feeling behind it. These songs are intended as honor and praise, to a deity, a way of life, or a people. They're the result of a composer's wish to express his feelings about his god, or his religion, or the people he shares it with. A song like this is an act of love put into a form we can hear, and as such, I treasure it, no matter where it comes from or what it's intended for. It doesn't matter to me whether I disagree with the tenets of that composer's religion, because I can share in that composer's wish to honor and glorify something he believes in, which, when you come right down to it, is something we all do. I hate to nit-pick, m'dear, but you seem to be leaving out a few groups. Namely, atheists and agnostics. Well, maybe not agnostics, but definitely atheists. Oh, another thing on the religious music thread, along Heather's line of argument. Don't forget that back in the older days, music was either for the church or troubador type music. Any choral music from that period of time is going to be religious. And the troubador songs haven't survived the passage of time that well. The only major choral work I can think of off the top of my head that isn't religious would be Carmina Burana which is semi-religious. I know there are more, but I haven't heard that many English language choral music type things, either. Oh dear, this isn't very long, is it? What happenned to Cennydd? His last post was the 6th, and he hasn't been responding to my private mail, either. Does anyone know what's up with him? ObMisty: (oops, I let it back me into a corner) Is Fire Rose worth the money? The whole Herald idea, while a nice romantic wonderful fantasy, is rather an idealized view of goodness. But when you don't see much goodness, it's nice to escape to a place where the goodness is obvious. I wouldn't be Chosen. I'm way to selfish. Well, maybe not agnostics, but definitely > atheists. I included atheists. Reread the paragraph before the one you included in your post. *From my point of view*, I can be atheist and still be ok with religious songs, because I see that song as a form of praise for something the composer believes in. *From my point of view* it's perfectly ok for me to sing a song from another religion, because I'm not celebrating that religion, but that composer's love for it, and the memory of that composer. I *can* understand why others would have a hard time with it, though. I'm not saying that everybody should look at it my way and should sing Christian songs, which seems to be the major objection here, just that this is the way I see it. I could say a lot more, I guess, but it would just get me into trouble. ;) ObMisty: Can I borrow yours, Deniz? Is Fire Rose worth the money? The first Misty book I ever read was By the Sword. Was I hooked! I went right out and bought Oathbound and Oathbreakers and the rest (as they say) is history and many shelves on the bookshelf. When I originally picked up BTS, what caught my eye was the dedication to the memory of Stan Rogers, the Canadian folk singer. I had all of his music and although I was not lucky enough to meet him in person or hear a concert, we had exchanged letters and his mother (who handled mail sales of his music) and I corresponded for quite a while after his death. Firebird carries all his music. If anyone wants to hear more accolades or more about his music, mail me privately. Anyway, anyone who dedicates a book to Stan MUST have good qualities and I was certainly proved right. I think BTS has remained my favorite partly because I have the cassette that really makes the story come alive. I guess you've all noticed that I have a definite attachment to the music of Valdemar along with the stories. I have often found that a song can make a point that it takes pages to do in prose. (this Email is a case in point). I have 2 teenaged boys, 15 and 17 who both are itching to join the Air Force (my hubby is an LtCol in the Air Force Reserve) . The younger one especially would like to be in the Special Forces and all that macho stuff. One day I just happened to be playing "Price of Command" from the Oathbound cassette when he was in the car (great place, a car, you have a captive audience) and we got into the discussion of how it feels when you're not fighting yourself, but must send others, sometimes friends, out to fight and maybe die. I don't know what kind of impact it made, but at least I know that the thought has been introduced into the brain. A near second favorite is Knight of Ghosts and Shadows the first of the SERRAted Edge series. I guess it's that Sterling Forest thing again. I haven't heard anyone comment on Sacred Ground. Was it just that it is not a herald book? Or was it just not up to snuff? It reminded me of a series that was on TV quite a few years ago, Stingray . It was a kind of white knight helping lost causes type of show, Nick Mancuso starred. One of the episodes (that had a great song line running through it--surprise, surprise) was about some ancient tribal relics that were about to be disturbed by a contractor who was building a shopping mall. Maybe that struck a common cord. Anyway, I really liked SG too. Guess this is long enough for now. By the way, Emily, how are you feeling?? Your mail has more pep to it than it had the end of the week, so I have the impression that you're better. Hope you're on the mend! I checked my mail last Sat. night, and I checked it again Tues night, and I got 177 messages. I've been reading them for 4 hours now. It's deadly to stay away from the comp for so long! I couldn't help it though, I had my chem and bio exams Monday, and I studied Sun. and Mon., didn't sleep on Sun., so I ended up crashing last night and this afternoon. Ugh. Well, I only have one more week before I'm free, so I guess I can last till then. ~~Florian and Need reincarnated~~ Summersong: Could Florian come back as someone with the Mage Gift And Need could be another teacher of Magic -- who knows, she could be the First Companion-Mage . Mylee: Need coming back, that brings up the whole "can non-Heralds be reincarnated as Companions" question. I don't know, Need has been around much much longer than Vanyel, even pre-Mage War. I think that if I were Need, I'd take a long, well-deserved rest in the Havens, or its counterpart in whatever religion I believe in. Summersong: Do you think anyone would notice -- other than Karal, of course -- who Florian is and who Need is? Would Need come back as a Companion and have a name that may betray her origins? Mylee: How long does it take before a dead Herald can come back? Sayvil came back after about 700 years, right? If it takes that long, then no one will probably notice. In fact, it might be necessary to have a long span of time between one's life as a Herald and one as a Companion, so that no one will notice/remember. Is it possible that the Companions also use their magic to keep the Heralds from thinking that they are reincarnated Heralds? Are all Companions reincarnated Heralds? Can the Grove-Born be reincarnated as Heralds? (Peaches and sheep if this is a DTD topic) ~~END~~ ~~UK covers of Magestorm and Magewar trilogies~~ Jaguar: That *is* supposed to be Amberdrake on the cover, isn't it? He looks like the hero out of a romance novel, all hair-blowing-back-in-the-wind, open-front-robe-to-show-off-chest, dramatic-pose, etc. Gah. Yech. Take it away. I think I prefer that to LD's pics in the book. He looks _old_ in those sketches, late forties at least. And even if he _was_ in his late forties, he's supposed to look younger b/c of the Heartstone. Yes. He did. And I must agree. The thing that disturbs me the most about those covers are those "tentacles" the artist gave the gryphons. They make me think of cockroaches. Ugh. Also, it looks like Skan's eyes are closed on BG, so it gives him even more of the BEM effect. (err... that's Bug-Eyed Monster) He also has claws on his wings. Make me think of Archaeopteryx (or however you spell that). Who's the dark-haired guy? Ma'ar? I didn't notice the naked woman before, who the heck is she supposed to be? In WG, why are the people wearing funny looking crowns? SW, I _almost_ like it, except for the weird cat drawing. Although those cats _do_ look more like Siamese cats than the ones in the US version. SR, _please_ don't tell me that bald guy is Tremane. Why is he shirtless? I thought it was winter at that time? Mat: BTW - what's with Karal (is that him?) on the UK SB cover??? Why's he blue? He looks like he's drowning, especially with those things that look like bubbles but are probably meant to be something else. And who's the guy who looks like his head is about to get chomped off by a gargoyle? Charliss? ~~END~~ ~~Companion brains vs bird brains~~ Glithoniel: I've always thought the smaller theory rested on brain size. Lets face it, only so much gray matter can be crammed into a head as small as a birds(even hulking bond-birds). Thats why the raptors tend to be smarter. Now a Companion has a much larger brain mass, therefore more intelligence. I think it also partly depends on the ratio of brain mass to body size, since whales and elephants have bigger brains than humans. (Which is why some people believe that they are sentient) Anyway, to elaborate on what Glithoniel said, the neurons are the gray matter on the surface of the brain, the white matter is mostly axons, I think. Anyway, the more gray matter you have, the more brain cells you have, and since the human skull is pretty small, the gray matter sort of folds so that it will fit (kind of like the small intestine which is over 20 feet long but fits nicely in your abdomen). So the more folds there are, the more complex it looks, and the more intelligence the species has in general. Brain size _does_ have something to do with, it's why we evolved from apelike ancestors with a small skull cavity to what we are now. (Guess who's a biology and pre-med student?) If you've heard this before and/or if you fell asleep, "Baa!" ~~END~~ ~~Armsmaster~~ >>Kory: "do they all share the Armsmaster, or are only Heralds and Blues taught that?" >Deniz:In MPromise Van mentions that Bards need to know how to fight. I'd doubt that Healers would be into combat lessons, though. Blues, now...I got the impression that the Armsmaster just kind of taught whoever got sponsored into arms lessons; seems like the "gentle-born" Blues would be more likely to get in, while the Natoli-types wouldn't be expected to need such skill. Mylee: Wouldn't the gentle-born already have been taught those skills? Like, um, whatsername, the Countess? J-something. The one who Alberich was training to be Weaponsmaster someday? What happened to her anyway? Obviously Kerowyn's the other Weaponsmaster now, so where is she? Anyway, back to the topic, the nobles have prolly learned _some_ fighting skills, while the lowborn would have no access to an armsmaster. Can there be more than one Armsmaster? Alberich (& Kero) for the Heralds, and other people for the other collegia? ~~END~~ ~~Congenital conditions~~ Summersong: ObMisty: wonder what happens to children with congenital conditions in Velgarth? Are they killed, or are they well taken care of, or do they not survive long enough to matter? Mylee: Once again, I'm operating under the assumption that Velgarth is set in medieval times. For the nobility, these children are cared for since they can pay for medicine and healers and herbalists and all that. Peasant children with defects probably die in infancy since they don't have to money to pay healers. I don't think the level of medical technology is high enough to sustain brain-dead people, and other conditions where the person would normally die without the interference of med. tech. Oh, and also, if their belief is that these children are monsters, they may end up getting killed, to prevent the dishonor in the family line or some such stuff. ~~END~~ ~~McCaffrey nick~~ >Kory: McCaffrey (why doesn't she have a nickname like MIsty or Pterry?) Mylee: I just always say AM. ~~END~~ ~~Pern and Darkover~~ >Firemist: I thought it was T'spoon... It's in one of MZB's many anthologies, last story. Supposedly telling why Darkoverians have the proverb about one doesn't chain a dragon to cook one's food Mylee: Oh, right, T'spoon. I misremembered. Baa! I read more than 10 Darkover books/anthologies in two month's time, so they're all mixed up in my head. :) Oh, and I believe they're called Darkovans (which kinda makes me think of "dark oven". Sheesh, I _have_ to bake that cake soon so it'll stop tormenting me!) ~~END~~ ~~non-Pern books~~ >Summersong: You must read the Crystal Singer Trilogy if you haven't already. I've trying to get the Generation Warriors thingy Mylee: the library here has a lot of AM stuff. I just read the Ship Who Sang and the Ship Who Searched. Searched seems better than Sang. Actually, Sang is reminiscent of Dflight, coz it's only at the end where she's sorta happy, and it leaves it hanging. It feels like the whole of SWSang is a prologue to Partnership (is it? I haven't read it yet, but I'm hoping it's about Helva and Niall), and it's sort of like Dflight in that the whole of it was sort of an explanation about Pern and Thread and all that, then the rest of the stuff happened in the later books. I love Dflight, but it's obvious that it's AM's early work. ~~END~~ ~~Pern tied to other worlds~~ Summersong: >>BTW, has anyone noticed if McCaffrey ties in any of her other worlds to the Pern universe? I think Pern and the Telepath worlds could be tied in together sometime.<< Mylee: I haven't read the Pirates' stuff yet, but in Rescue Run (Chronicles of Pern: First Fall), they mentioned fighting the K-somethings, and in a short story in The Girl Who Heard Dragons, there's a brainship with a Hrruban brawn that goes to one of the colonized worlds of these K-somethings. I'll check out my McCaffrey books. ~~END~~ ~~PO characters in books?~~ >Kaatje: Anyone? Have you read *fantasy* (not real-world) novels about Perfectly Ordinary (tm) characters? I'm trying to think of one, but I can't. Of course, this may not be my fault, because I'm so drugged up on DayQuil right now that I feel like I'm wrapped in cotton. (Got a Bad Cold). Mylee: There's this one series (I don't remember the title, I've only started on it) where 6 college kids get transported to a diff. universe while doing RPG. And Jon-Tom, in the Spellsinger series, was an ordinary law? engineering? student. Well, he _can_ spellsing, but it usually fouls up, so he sort of counts. >Esmeralda: well, this probably won't work, cos I can feel the brain going into "Who me? Names? What names?" mode, but I'll give it a whirl. Ann McCaffrey's book, Renegades of Pern - isn't the guy who rescues Araminta (??? - the one who can hear dragons) pretty normal. He doesn't acquire any gifts nor nuffink. And the much mentioned Piemur, also a McC character - he's a pretty ordinary man - no great gifts or magicks. Mylee: Yeah, Jayge especially, since he's PO (copyright Kaatje). Piemur, well, he's kinda like Menolly, he had a terrific voice, then he got to spy on the Oldtimers and help out down South and acted as ears for the Harperhall. Renegades wasn't totally about Jayge though, Aramina (who was extraordinary) and Thella were pretty major characters too. Actually, Renegades doesn't seem to be about a specific person, it's kind of a mix of whole bunch of stuff, with the "holdless" theme running through it, so I guess it _is_ a book about ordinary people. It's also my least favorite Pern book. >Emily: Actually, many fantasy books are about people who thought they were ordinary and discovered that they have some super special really weird ability. Then they have all sorts of adventures. Mylee: 'Coz we're all ordinary and we empathize with their being ordinary, and then when they become special, well, that's what we're all hoping for, isn't it? Like Esme said, we want to escape, but we want to identify with the chars. too, and it's easiest to do that with a seemingly ordinary person. And if we read about an ordinary person who stays ordinary and does nothing extraordinary, then why bother reading it? All we need to do to find that is to look around in real life. ~~END~~ ~~Troi~~ >Summersong: Pilot, as in helm. It's Deanna Troi. Think about it -- she crashed the Enterprise on her first turn at the helm. Hee-hee. Mylee: Hey! I _like_ Troi! Some of my fave episodes are those where she's given a real role, not the girly roles she ends up playing. I think Troi could have been done so much better, if she was given more "Troi-as-Starfleet-officer" instead of all those Troi-as-gorgeous-babe" roles. ~~END~~ ~~Christ~~ >Tygriss: Christmas Carols: But something bugs me: We're also doing "Glory to God in the Highest," and I have a problem with that because I'm not a >Christian. I look at the Birth of Christ story with an eye of >"legends and mythology, work of literature". Does anyone else have this problem? Mylee: I'm Christian, but I believe that the whole Christmas being the birth of Christ is fake. For one thing, what are the sheep grazing in the middle of winter? And besides, Dec. 25 was a Roman holiday and Catholicism just encorporated that ritual into itself. Catholicism has so many rites that came from pagan rituals in "converted lands". ~~END~~ ~~Acolyte~~ Mat: "I, Mat, God of Procrastination, name thee, Romylee/Mylee/Myles (whichever thou wishest to call thyself) to be Mine Acolyte." Mylee: /me bows down to the great God. "I am not worthy... I am not worthy...." >Mat: I'm an OoUL/L.Korendil: How does everyone here eat their M&Ms? I suck on each indivdually until the shell's disolved and then mush the chocolate all over my mouth. Or I just pop em in, like now, when I'm busy. Mylee: Is this a poll? *grin* I pop them in, bite along the edge so the shell cracks and separates from the chocolate, crunch the shell, then sort of suck/smoosh the chocolate. If it's the kind with nuts, I do the same thing but I peel off the chocolate from the nut and eat the nut last.
