And you're right, he was truly a Perfectly Ordinary person, with nothing but the clothes on his back (well, he was Ringbearer for a little while, but not long enough for it to do anything to him). There is nobody like him. There's something about Tolkien's world that is so...bleak. So empty. I visualize it all in muted watercolor tones, drifted in fallen leaves and thin sunlight. And in the end, even though the war is won, Sauron defeated, and the land restored, there's still that feeling of vague emptiness. It's not a "happy ending", really, just an End. And it's the only ending that could possibly be. To relate all this to Misty, you all have heard my "why I like Misty" speech before, I'm sure, but I'm reminded again that I like her work because it remains true to the ending. She doesn't cop out and give her novels a "happy" ending because she thinks we need one. She ends them the way they need to be ended, happy or not. I appreciate the fact that sometimes her major characters get hurt, and die, or are changed forever. I think it shows a lot of respect for her talent, and her audience. Hey Hth! I can't remember who wrote about having followers, but the Goddess of Music and Song does have quite a group of priests and acolytes. Right now, they are as follows: Lady Adrianne, High Priestess Lady Woodlark, Lady Kaatje, and Lord AmliFireCat (or Lord Jeff), Acolytes Lady Shadra, First Priestess of Harp and Woodwind Techniques Always room for more, though! My first Misty book was AQueen, and I don't really have a favorite - it really depends on my mood. I am exceedingly fond of LHM, the Winds trilogy (but I don't like WOFate that much), and the Lark and the Wren. I also like Sacred Ground, the Fire Rose, and Elvenbane. RE: Bardic Voices I think one of the reason the Robin and the Kestrel was so dismal was that it really dealt with a very similar situation to the *end* of the Lark and the Wren - but didn't really bring any new information or a new angle into the situation. Having Kestrel go undercover into the Guild, and explore the inner workings of the Guild - or having Gwyna/Robin go undercover as a servant in the Church, rather than as a gypsy, would have been more interesting. Also, the whole thing with the Skull Hill ghost, Orlina Woolwright, and Rune's village felt very contrived. It would have been a stronger story, had Orlina been acquainted with them from the start, been a lightning rod for the church, or an undercover liaison for the Free Bards or something. As it was, I felt she just served the obligatory "red shirt" function, that we used to see on the old Star Trek. Eagle and the Nightingales was stronger, because of the different angles the story took, and because they actually *did* something about the root of the problem. I must admit, I did miss the big Evil Conspiracy, and the Evil Villains, but maybe we'll catch up with them in Four-and-Twenty-Blackbirds. And BRING BACK RUNE AND TALYSEN!!!! Enough ranting! To whomever was upset about the religious lyrics: This can be a serious problem! I know a young man who actually refused to audition for a role in an opera, because he had serious problems with how his character behaved toward women. I also know, when learning new roles, I often choke on the way some of the heroines act - however, I recognize that they were written at a vastly different time in history, and by a group of people with different ideals and social mores than my own. I usually find *some* way to personalize it, put my own stamp on it, find some way to make it comprehensible to me. I know someone who sings religious music just as a professional - and treats it as any professional gig. I imagine just looking at the music as a piece of religious or historical *literature* that you are *performing* but do not necessarily *believe in* might help. Good luck! I decieded to look and in Pawn Lancir is the Queen's own and he has gift. When Savil and Jaysen go threw the gate that 'Lendel and Van opened Lancir is with them. When they are trying to decied who should stay and take care of the mess made by 'Lendel, Lancir volunteers to stay. Jaysen asks Lancir "And you'll get home how. We're going to shut the Gate from the other side as soon as we're through, and you aren't up to Gating by youfself these days." So he may have been old but he was still mage gifted. In Promise, in chapter two, Savil and Van are talking and she tells him she cant teach and be a guardian. He asks her who's place she took and she say, "Lancir's. Shavi can't;she tried, and she can't. The four Guardians have to be Herald-Mages. We'd hoped Healing-gift was close enough, but she didn't pass the last trial. I think she is relieved. It's a pity; the Guardian of the East has always been King's Own, but-" And in Price in the first capter right after Jisa leaves Van in the garden he is thanking about Shavri and how she is not much of a herald except in having Taver. He is doing all her jobs including being the Nothern Guardain in the web. So if being a guardain in the web was always the job of the MoH then untill Van and Savil took over in place of Shavri then the MoH was always a mage. I hope this helps Firefly ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Dec 1996 01:05:22 -0500 (EST) From: "Romylee A. Ejercito" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: electricity/ Road through Sorrows/ GIFs/ Pirates/ Ship Who Sang/ Restoree/ Wrede/ Gaiman/ Tolkien/ SATs in Velgarth?/ SATs/ M&Ms Message-ID: Chris is a stupid, idiotic, insensitive, moronic, ARGH! The fool! Grrrrr! I just came from watching Miss Saigon. I've had the soundtrack for quite some time now, but this is the first time I've actually seen it. Anyway, Chris is a dolt. Okay, so he fell out of love with Kim and into love with Ellen. Does that have to make him so insensitive that he blithely makes decisions without even talking to Kim? *growl* I didn't like Act 1 too much, it was too... frenetic and frantic, which I suppose _is_ the mood at that time. Act 2 was when the cool stuff was (like the helicopter and the car) and was when your emotions got pulled into it. ~~Electricity~~ >Mel: ObMisty: "just as electricity won't flow through lead"? There I was, reading along happily, immersed in the story, then I hit that spot and *spoiing*, all I can think is "But it *does*! Lead is a metal, and electricity can be conducted by all metals and some non-metals!" Mylee: Maybe she got confused between electricity and X-rays? ~~END~~ ~~Road through Sorrows~~ >Gilt: Real OBMisty: Why is there a road through part of Sorrows, with a Way Station on it, if everybody avoids the place? Mylee: Ummm, just in case? Murphy's Law and all that, they prolly would have needed one if there hadn't been one. Also, there must've been one _before_ Van and Stef started haunting it, so I guess they just kept it up. ~~END~~ ~~GIFs~~ >Kerowynn: does anyone know where I can find some good gifs of the characters in the Valdemar books? Mylee: How about scanning your books? That's what I usually end up doing. Of course it helps that my university has several scanners.... *grin* ~~END~~ ~~More McCaffrey (Pirates)~~ >Firemist: Aiee! you haven't read the Pirates stuff yet?!?!? Mylee: Nope. I was just into the Pern stuff, plus, back where I came from (a sci-fi desert as well as a musical one), we hardly had the novels in order, and I hate reading the second novel of a trilogy. It took me three years to get the Pern stuff together (first I read was Ddrums, then Ddawn, Dflight, WhiteD, ATWOP, Dquest... see what I mean? All muddled up. Ugh.) Anyway, the lib here (thank God I went to this school) has them. I read Dinosaur Planet and DP Survivors, and I'm planning to borrow Sassinak and The Death of Sleep after I finish Ship Who Won and City Who Fought. ~~END~~ ~~Ship Who Sang~~ >Esme: There's a "last chapter" to the Ship who Sang in, I think, the book of short stories "Get off the Unicorn" which is meant to sort of close the Helva/Niall saga. Mylee: YES!!! I have that book! That's how I got interested in the Rowan series. I just didn't reread it much b/c I didn't understand the other stories too much. Well, I'm checking it out after I log out of this comp! >Esme: Do you realise she wrote Ship who Sang in 1970 - a long lived book. Mylee: The copy the lib has is actually one of the first print editions. It smells kinda musty already. ~~END~~ ~~Restoree~~ >Esme: Have you read Restoree? Mylee: Nope. I'm curious about the Pegasus stuff. Is it any good? ~~END~~ ~~Calling on Dragons~~ >Emily: Guess what I found! Oh, all right, I'll tell you. I found a Patricia Wrede book in the University Bookstore , Calling on Dragons. Mylee: Love her. I've got the whole Enchanted Forest Chronicles. I think Talking to Dragons is not as good as the others (Mendanbar's def. better than Daystar). There's also one more book, um, shoot, I can't remember, and the book's 10,000 miles away. I'll e-mail my sis and ask. ~~END~~ ~~Gaiman~~ >Tygriss: Has anyone read Gaiman and Pratchett's Good Omens? That is the most hilarious book I have ever read, truly! The angel and demon being best friends and trying to stop the Apocaylpse was a wonderful idea. A better team to tackle the subject couldn't be found. Mylee: Is this Neil Gaiman by any chance? The topic sounds like something he'd do. I love his Sandman stuff, and I'm getting the collections from SFBC one by one. *sigh* Neil Gaiman quit doing Sandman, then Bill Watterson quit Calvin and Hobbes. With my luck, Cathy Guisewite is going to quit Cathy too.... ~~END~~ ~~Tolkien~~ >Kaatje: There's something about Tolkien's world that is so...bleak. So empty. I visualize it all in muted watercolor tones, drifted in fallen leaves and thin sunlight. Mylee: I know what you mean. It's not so bad in the Hobbit, but it is in LoR. I don't reread it too often, and after I do, I feel really drained. ~~END~~ ~~SATs in Velgarth~~ >Silvermoon: obMisty- I wonder if there is any SAT type test in Velgarth. It would be interesting to think about which characters would get what score. :) Mylee: They sort of have one in Karse, don't they? When the children line up and the priest-mages look at them and take away those with mage potential and/or high intelligence? >Silvermoon: Actually, I have no idea what percent I am. It would be nice to know though! I do know this tho. If I was in a room with 100 juniors/people who took it this year, only 4 people would have done better than me on the verbal part. :) And...29 on the math. Not bad, considering I thought I was going to bomb the math half! Mylee: Oh, I was asking what %ile you were. So, um, 96th %ile on verbal and 71st %ile in Math? As for %s, I don't know, my mom almost always uses %iles in the exam score sheets, so maybe it's a %ile thing and not a % thing? I'd love to try the Mensa test sometime. ~~END~~ ~~SATs~~ >Silvermoon: Drat...look at all this stuff. You probably all think I'm bragging. Mylee: Can I brag too? *grin* Took the SATs in '94, got a 690 in Verbal and a 760 in Math. Actually, I think that the SATs are more of a "what have you learned" type of test. Well, most IQ tests seem to be that way. It just measures your basic Math and English abilities. Actually, you guys are lucky, coz you only take the SATs. Back home, you take the NSATs (which are pretty much like the SATs), then you apply to university. Each uni has a diff. entrance exam, so the more unis you apply to, the more tests you have to take. And if you want a scholarship, well, there's different tests for different scholarships too. Senior year is basically one big test. I ended up taking my SATs on a Saturday, then took a scholarship exam the next day. I would _not_ recommend it. I only took the SATs coz I was also applying to US colleges, and I hadn't taken it, or the PSATs previously, and I was trying to take the test before the application deadlines. It was kind of a last minute decision for me, thought I'd try applying to US unis in, um, July senior year (our school year starts June). I didn't do poorly on the tests, but I got pretty stressed. Oh, and with the SATs, I know someone who got higher SAT scores than his brother, coz he was just a good test taker. ~~END~~ ~~M&Ms~~ >Atropa: *sniffle* really wish I could eat M&Ms... BTW, being allergic to chocolate really REALLY sucks... all I can eat is white chocolate... and ya, it does kinda taste like white clay... not that _I've_ ever eaten it either... ;) Mylee: Yuck. Hmm, are you sure you can white chocolate? You being the Dark Angel and all? *grin* Actually, being allergic might be a good thing. I sort of start eating choc during exam time, it keeps me awake. /me ruefully looks at all the pounds she's gained since then. ~~END~~ Mylee, Acolyte of Procrastination rejercito-+AT+-wesleyan.edu I have one of the most brilliant minds on earth...
