But I got worn out in choir practice today (our concert's tomorrow night, and we have rehearsals in the morning and in the afternoon. My throat has been sorely abused). We stood for more than two hours, which I guess isn't _that_ bad. Unfortunately, I have a problem with my lower back. I slipped and fell when I was in fifth grade, and for a month after that, everytime I bent over or straightened from a bent position, my tailbone would ache. And stupid idiot that I am, I didn't tell my mom about it. Anyway, now it only hurts when I've been standing for far too long, or when I'l trying to lift something heavy. So after two hours of singing.... /me winces and rubs her back, trying to get the aches to go away. I don't know how I'm going to stand it tomorrow, b/c I'll have to wear heels and that's going to aggravate it. *grimace* Happy birthday to Nina, here's a stress sheep that magically takes away your headaches, backaches, all aches when you squish it. ~~chocolate~~ >Ken: Or do you mean that nasty white food product that passes for "white chocolate" but doesn't really contain any cocoa products at all? Mylee: How come there are so many "chocolates" that aren't really chocolate? And the fake white chocolate must be what I've eaten. How do they make it white anyway? Dark chocolate's the best, sweet and bitter. ~~END~~ ~~Miss Saigon~~ >Emily: And you expected (from the soundtrack!?) for Chris to be a _good guy_?!?!? Mylee: I listened to the soundtrack, I hated him. But I've listened to it for a long time, so I sort of got used to it, you know? Then I watched it and I hated him all over again. He's a jerk. >Emily: I never really liked Ellen either, you think she could at least have some feeling for Kim. Mylee: Yeah. I don't know whether she's just acting like a woman who loves her husband dearly, or if she's a b*tch. I never like Cosette either, but that's prolly coz she got Marius (who was a wimp). Miss Saigon had several bits that were reminiscent of Les Mis. And I think Chris never married her, he just promised her that he would. The Dju Vui Vai ceremony wasn't binding in US laws I think. But that was funny though, it was so obvious Chris had no idea what he was doing, and that he didn't understand what was going on. Oh, I heard that Lea Salonga, who originally did Kim, is coming back to reprise her role sometime next year. I think I'd like to see it again just to see how she'd do it. Half the cast was Filipino or Filipino American (I figured from the surnames), and I think almost all the Kims were Fil. or Fil-Am. /me grins proudly. ~~END~~ ~~Wrede~~ >>Mylee: Love her. I've got the whole Enchanted Forest Chronicles. I think Talking to Dragons is not as good as the others (Mendanbar's def.better than Daystar). There's also one more book, um, shoot, I can't remember, and the book's 10,000 miles away. I'll e-mail my sis and ask. >Emily: I only found the one. Maybe one of the others will show up there... Mylee: You can get the four books from SFBC. Searching for Dragons is the best, IMO. (This goes for you too Randi) ~~END~~ ~~Gaiman~~ >Deniz: Yes, it's Neil Gaiman. I absolutely LOVE his stuff. I still haven't finished "The Kindly Ones" arc, yet, because Winter forgot I hadn't read them and didn't live near a comic store. Can you imagine Saudi customs (no pornography) letting in Sandman? If you think so, remember Doll's House, when Rose is talking with Morpheus. About flying. Mylee: I don't have the books, but my friend had them and I got hooked. I'm just getting them now. I have "The Kindly Ones" and I'm getting an anthology of sorts written by people who love Sandman. I _think_ Gaiman edited it, I'm hoping it's good. I love _Death_. And yeah, I remember Rose. *grin* I guess that would qualify as porn to some people. You remember that panel with the Death and Dream as little kids? I love that one. ~~END~~ ~~Birdbrains~~ >Khenta: Birds have a differently (simpler, IIRC) structured brain than mammals. They don't have as much grey matter or neo-cortex means that they don't have as much capacity to learn new behaviour 'cause they're running on instincts, mostly whereas mammals have to learn most of their behaviour, being ruled by instincts to a lesser extent than birds or reptiles. Mylee: Um, I haven't taken the neurobio class yet (I opted for immunology for next sem), but I _think_ I read somewhere that bird brains are mostly cerebellum, b/c they need it for coordination and flying, etc. I think I also read an article in Discover magazine that birds are smarter than we think. But a horse would def. be smarter than a bird, according to the human definition of intelligence. ~~END~~ ~~Guardians of the Flame~~ Aistes: What is wrong with the Gaurdians of the Flame. Mylee: Nothing. I can't point out what's wrong, it just didn't grip me. *shrug* A matter of taste I suppose. ~~END~~ ~~GREs~~ Oh yeah, on the SATs, well I may have gotten good Math scores, but I almost flunked Calculus. It just didn't make sense to me. The only Math I ever understood was geometry. Geometry makes sense. I basically have problems with very abstract subjects. I do okay in inorganic chemistry and physics, horribly in math, and very well in biology. If I can see a practical application of the thing, or if it's tangible, I can understand it. The SATs were just algebra and some geom, which I understood very well. I also think that the SATs are mostly stuff you've learned over the years. You can't really study for it, it's something that has to have been acquired gradually. Having a large vocab helps of course. So the GRE's are easier? That's good to hear. I'm hoping to get either a scholarship or a hefty chunk of financial aid so I can go to either grad school or med school, so I need to get a good score on my GREs and my M-somethings. ~~END~~ ~~ Uh-oh, I need an ObMisty.... Okay, um, Van had the potential for the Gifts, right? But it was blasted open, so he could use them. So why couldn't they open the channels of those who were Gifted when there were so few Herald Mages left? It doesn't have to get blasted, just opened. Oh, here's another one about bondbirds. I'm assuming that the raptors are the "established breeds" and the corbies (something Darkwind said about corbies barely being bred out of the wild line) and firebirds are new lines. So does that mean that the raptors are smarter b/c they've been evolving that way for a long time? And it's only the Tayledras who have birds, right? Why does Kethry say that the kyree are Pelagir creatures but it says elsewhere that they were created by Urtho? And how come the mountain cats in SB were never mentioned before? Is it just an afterthought or is Misty planning something with them? And what _is_ this trauma that the hertasi got from the Cataclysm? Or is it the Cataclysm itself that was the trauma? Tsk, tsk, Firemist, I expect better of thee. Of course, real white chocolate has cocoa products in it, the cocoa butter in it is the same as in "real" chocolate and is what gives genuine white chocolate its haunting, delicate chocolate flavor. The color and intensity difference is due to the fact that white chocolate doesn't have any "chocolate mass," the dark heavily-flavored solid extract of the cacao bean. While I certainly love dark and milk versions of chocolate, I have to admit to a profound preference for white chocolate (the real stuff). My main question (and warning) for Mylee was that if thou art allergic to cocoa products, thou must needs be wary of white chocolate too, since sooner or later thou wilt no doubt be offered the real stuff, which contains at least as much cocoa butter as its darker cousins. For someone who is highly allergic, this could have drastic results. There is nobody like him. You know, once I use up my to-be-read stack, I should reread LotR again. I haven't done it in over a year or two, and the details are beginning to fade. > There's something about Tolkien's world that is so...bleak. So > empty. I have this LotR poster that I found in the campus bookstore last year, and it's done all in tones of brown. Kind Thomas Canty-ish actually. Although the characters all look old, thin and decrepit. (Sam looks like he's on his way to Gollum-hood.) It's a pretty cool poster, and the color(s) really capture the bleakness for me. :) ============================================================================ On Fri, 13 Dec 1996, Rozanna McNeer wrote: > Misty? or Rose? somewhere/sometime/someone said that Misty > is an electrical engineer, so she should *know* these things. You can search by author, title, keyword, subject. Hmm. This hasn't been anounced to the list-at-large. The Bookstore Queen, the Bibliomancer of the Ladies of the Pink Wand has revealed that _Sword of Ice_ is out! She already has it. Of course, I had no luck finding it in Barnes and Noble today. :( ============================================================================= On Sat, 14 Dec 1996, Chris & Sean Talbot wrote: I said: > >The Guardians of the Flame series, by Joel Rosenberg. They seem to generic or something. I can't really explain it. I really liked them when I read them the first time (I have up until _The Road to Ehvanor_), but when I tried to reread them, I got totally stuck. Just couldn't get into them. ========================================================================== On Sat, 14 Dec 1996, Romylee A. Ejercito wrote: > Uh-oh, I need an ObMisty.... The problem is that they don't know *how* to do it. Savil says so somewhere in MPawn. The thing with Van was a freak accident caused by Savil shutting down Tylendel's Gate. It seems that the only reason it did what it did was the lifebond. So, even if they could repeat the accident (which I doubt they could), I doubt that they would. And they probably can't do it without the accident. Oh, something that's bothered me about MPawn for a while, but I keep forgetting to mention. (Hmm. Should have saved this for an obMisty. Oh well.) The formation of lifebonds seem to be different in MPawn than in all the other books. According to MPawn: MPawn, p234-5 " 'Gods!' he [Andrel] looked up from his plate with the expression of a stunned sheep. [me: wow, I never noticed that sheep reference before!] 'Vanyel and Tylendel--*lifebonded*?'[emphasis Misty's] She [Savil] nodded unhappily. 'I'm pretty damn sure of it; what's more, so are Mardic and Donni, and if anyone would recognize a bonding, it would be another bonded pair.'" So, that's the proof that they were bonded. But earlier: p185. " Tylendel nodded. 'So I think we're linking. I think it happened sometime between when I started the fit and when I came out of the backlash coma.'" It's odd. Always before, we're told that lifebonding is at first sight. But here, 'Lendel says that it's only after Staven dies that they lifebond. Do you think that maybe they were bonded before, but it was just inactive? Or did it happen when they think it did? ( I needn't have included the first quote. It's just that I thought that the second was part of the first. I realized after I'd typed the whole first part that I was thinking of another quote. So I left it. The more textevd, the merrier. :) ) > Yep, procrastinating again.
