I don't > think I could live without being able to read. I know there's Braille, > but not all books get translated that way. I've often thought that myself. :) But I have a friend who is deaf, and she says she would rather be blind. She's the most amazing lip reader I've ever seen. Most people don't even pick up on the fact that she's deaf--that's how good she is, added to the fact that she can speak normally because she hasn't always been completely deaf. But even so, it helps for her to have another signer around for when she gets stuck--otherwise she sometimes gives you a weird look and asks "Your mother did *what* to a gecko?" She says that being deaf means being isolated from so many everyday activities that she'd rather be blind. At least then she could easily converse with someone. Still, she can do so many things... And I heard a statistic recently that said only about 25% of blind people can actually read braille. Some people just can't learn it. *That* threw me for a loop, let me tell you! Made me pretty nervous. > Tresta: And what do you think Van and Stef said to each other when they > first met in the Forest after sixty or seventy years apart? > > Romylee: "Stef! I get the giggles just thinking about it--the two of them fussing over each other like that for eternity--well, almost. This whole questions reminds me of _The Princess Bride_ (the book, not the film, I mean) where Golding (as Morgenstern) refuses to write the reunion scene between Wesley and Buttercup because he feels he can't do justice to it. I thought the film did an adequate job, actually. :) I sort of get nervous when I read those kinds of things, myself. I mean, how do you convey that kind of emotion? It never goes quite right, for me. The only really great scene in that manner that I can think of is from _The Throne of Scone_ by Patricia Kennealy-Morrison, where Gwydion and Aeron reunite in the garden. That was extremely well done. ObMisty: I thought Misty's portrayal of the squabbling Council was very well done, all through the Arrows books. The shifting alliances and the influence of Orthallen, in particular, were pretty believable. Has anybody been in that sort of situation? I've sat through some heated staff meetings, but it's not quite on the same level. One of my friends went to see the Les Mis show that came to town. (I didn't get to go.) :( Anyway, he had no idea what the story line was. Thank goodness a plot summary was in the program. Anyway, I asked him how it was, and he said it was great. Then he said, "But I didn't like some of the characters?" Me- "Who?" Matt-"That guy...the main character type guy...young..." Me- "Marius?" Matt-"Yeah, him. He bugged me. He was so stupid." Go on to talk about Eponine and stuff. "I that girl..." Me-"Cosette?" Matt-"Yeah, didn't like her." Me-"Old or young?" Matt-"Both...she was such a wimp." etc. :) Weird parallels. obMisty-ummmm...Are there any cases you can think of where a situation like Marius/Cosette/Eponine came up in Misty's work? I can't! Only the pressures of work have kept me away, but I think I might as well send this, as I am still about 6 digests behind. Starting Over: My name is Richard Bertelsen. I live in Denmark and have been working with computers for the last 12 years. I am 43 Years old and just manages to have my 44th birthday before the year is over (Dec. 30th.). I have been reading Science Fiction and Fantasy since about 1968, in the beginning only translated book but since about 1971 mainly in English. By this time I have somewhere between 4000 and 5000 science fiction and fantasy books. My other interests are singing in a choir and dancing (Danish Folkdancing). In my oh so great free time I also like to go to the theater for operas, ballets, musicals and the occational plays. Re: Companions/bondbirds debate: I think that there is one aspect that hasn't been brought up in this discussion, At least I havn't seen it (yet). One reason that Companions can influence their heralds could be that Companions are fellow mammals while bondbirds are birds. This should mean IMHO that a Companion is much closer to their Heralds. Re: Congrats. A very warm congratulation to Lady Woodlark on the solo - I am sorry that it is somewhat late but I kept hoping that I would catch up on the digests (bow to Mat). Re: Musicals. Recently, I saw a performance of Ms. Saigon. It was wonderful. I am happy that there are people here in Copenhagen who will work at puttin up musicals, last Year they did Les Miserables, and I liked that a lot too. Somebody - I can't find who - said something about Madame Butterfly being the source of Ms. Saigon, but that is wrong. In the programme that I bought at the musical it said that the source was a book, but that this book was also the source of Madame Butterfly. Well - back to lurking again. I am in digest mode at this time and will continue like this until January, but I will print out the digests and read them as soon as possible. May this comming holliday season be good to You all. I agree about deafness being an isolating experience. I live with someone who is hearing impaired (she had a cochlear implant recently), and she lipreads very well, but she sometimes needs to ask people to repeat things. And she has to ask people to interpret her phone messages for her. I don't know if she'd rather be blind than deaf though. I've lost some hearing in my right ear b/c of repeated ear infections, but I can still hear using both ears. As for a nickname I guess tz would be as good as any. My first ML book was the LHM trilogy which I purchased from the SFBC out of curiousity. It also my favorite book. I've been a bookaholic ever since I learned to read and for a book to "get" to me is a very rare book indeed. LHM got me good. I'm a straight arrow so I didn't think a book where the main character was shay'a'chern would be of interest to me. HUH! It still gets me when I reread it. Vanyel is a decent, caring person. Who he loves is his own business. It was simply part of the story. think it was quite tastfully done. By the time I finished LHM for the first time I was hooked. Since then I've purchased all her books I could find. I do hope she writes some more in the Sacred Ground field, that was an excellent book. Yes I will agree that they are all not imortal classics but regardless of that I still enjoyed them. As for the bondbird/companion comments, I may have missed some of it but I am currently rereading the Winds books and already I've run into a couple of comments concerning the bondbirds intelligence. Yes they do understand language - to a degree and yes they can form words in thier thoughts. However IMO they are not even in the same league as a companion. A bondbird is still a bird, not a reincarnated herald or a reincarnated anyone, nor can I recall ever reading any passage where they used any mind magic other then a limited communication skill. While a bondbird might pine away if his Tayedras died, I don't believe for a minute that a Tayedras would die because he lost his/her bondbird. Well I've babbled long enough. It may be time to duck and cover but after finally deciding to delurk I figured I might as well throw in my two cents worth. Thanks for "listening" to me. I hope I haven't offended anyone. If I had to choose...well, I'm biased. When I started having trouble, I was absolutely terrified--my eyes are my life: all I do is read, I'm a visual-based learner, I love movies, and communicating through the written word. The prospect of having that taken away was something I truly had to sit down and face. It looked to me like I would give up so much more being blind than being deaf. But then, I'm not deaf, so I can't get both sides of the story. I'm still scared about it. I want someone to tell me that I never have to worry about all of this ever again, but the fact is, that's not going to happen. It's always going to be there, literally in front of my eyes (part of my condition is seeing flashing lights) and I'd just better get used to it. And stop bothering you guys about it! :) And hey, if anybody wants us to take this to private mail, just yell. Here's some of those good vibes back at you! Re: Braille > Mylee: /me nods. I would be freaking out. It's a good thing my myopia's > pretty mild. I think it's safe to say that everybody here is. One of my favorite lines from Diane Duane's _So You Want To Be A Wizard_ is where the Manual says that a strong sign of a potential wizard is the inability to get to sleep without reading something first. Anybody else got that problem? > ~~Les Mis and Misty~~ > > >Kaatje: obMisty-ummmm...Are there any cases you can think of where a > situation like Marius/Cosette/Eponine came up in Misty's work? I can't! 'Twasn't me! Although I think Cosette and Marius were so wishy washy they dripped on the stage. Give me Eponine any time! I don't remember, and I don't have them here. The books, not the feet. :P Me-+AT+-school, obviously getting a little zippy. I do remember that Stefen discovered pain-blocking for them, with his Gift. Before that, they couldn't do it, and in Talia's time it's commonplace. > Who wrote the original novel Princess Bride? William Golding. Although he says in the novel that he's merely abridging S. Morgenstern's Classic Work. Morgenstern was supposedly a famous Florinese writer. If you haven't read it, I have mixed feelings about recommending it. I thought it was hilarious, but it has a much more cynical tone than the film. If you're one of those people who mixes up what they've read and what they've seen, like I do, then I wouldn't recommend it because it might wreck the movie for you. You be the judge, though. Then Kory said: >First off, I DO think it's canon;> Shall the list debate it?;> Why do you think it's canonical Kory? Explanation would be a good thing . My prob with calling it canon is that is wasn't written by the author herself, and some of the things in it may contradict things in later books or just be silly mistakes. Fans of Sherlock Holmes don't call everything about Holmes canonical, just the stuff written by Doyle. Same goes for Darkover (pretty much), but there you go by what the _author_ says is canonical. Welcome to all the newbies (there are four now right?)!!!!! I hope you enjoy all the discussion! Hmmm. Does my question about determining canon count as an ObMisty? OK, two day warning. My Christmas break is coming up so I'll be going home. I'll still be on the list but I'll kinda be lurking. If you want to private mail me while I'm at home, send it to philcartier-+AT+-earthlink.net and put [emily] in the subject line so we know who it's for (at home there are 5 people using one addy). I won't be anywhere near UD so I won't be able to respond to any mail that comes here til around Jan 5. Well, at least my poor computer can recover from the usual abuse I put it through. Someone recently mentioned that "State fo Grace" from Billy Joel's _Storm_Front_ CD would be good for Van & Stef. Well, also on that album is the song "And So It Goes." This has got to be one of the most beautiful and haunting songs I've heard (warning--don't listen to it if you're in a really depressed mood...it won't help any). It made me think of Talia & Dirk.... "In every heart there is a room, a sanctuary safe and strong to heal the wounds from lovers past until a new one comes along" and later... "But I would choose to be with you, that's if the choice we mine to make but you can make decisions, too, and you can have this heart to break." Fluff and a quasi-ObMisty in one.
