Kind of like, they can rearange the bone fragments, and give them the energy to heal, but they can't force them together, like they can with other wounds. Speed-Healing seems to be something special. IIRC, the only time we see real Speed-Healing is with Talia at the end of AFall. ============================================================================ On Tue, 17 Dec 1996, Kimmeroonie wrote: Kimihaha? Especially those of his "famous cousin" :) Correct me if >I'm wrong :) Wow, is this confusing! Ok, Warrl first appears in Oathbound. He becomes mindmated (whatever _that_ is) to Tarma (who you confused with Rris). We know that Tarma and Kethry are about the same ages (~20 IIRC) in Obound, but we have no clue about Warrl. Misty has said that in BTS Tarma and Kethry are both around 100. Therefore, Warrl _must_ be at least eighty in BTS. However, Tarma has said that she doesn't know how old he is and that she thinks he is older than her... So he could be well over 100 in BTS, and from the way Rris talks, he may still be alive (he is one old guy!) as of WoFury. Tygriss asked: >What about painters/artists in Valdemar? We know the Shin'a'in and >Tayledras created tapestries and such but I can't remember any >mention of this in Valdemar. Well, I dunno about the Tayledras weaving tapestries, I can't remeber any mention of such a thing. Their arts were more like clothing design, masks, jewelry, hairdo-dahs etc. The Valdemarens _definitely_ have painters. Remember that little artist guy who triggered the "little birds" in SRising? He was painting Ulrich's portrait, and he tried to kill Karal. Funny how I remember this stuff when I only read SRising once... Firemist moaned: >I can't find SoI; I can't fond SoI!!! WAH!!!! Me neither! (sob!) I can't find the new Diana Gabaldon either! Boohoo!!!!! I wanna read SoI and Drums of Autumn! Kawry gave some ideas about why the Valdemaren mages aren't using focus stones. I think it explains why the Tayledras don't use foci, but the Valdemarens... I'm not sure. I'd have to see more of how they do magic in both Vanyel's time and in Elspeth's. We really are only looking at it from the eyes of the most powerful mages, and that gives you a really distorted view of things. Would the newbies who complaineth, and my fave god _both_ relax ? I don't mind the Tolkein discussion, and I hate Tolkein. Not everyone has SoI yet, and not many people have Firebird, and SBreaking is still under spoilers... So, there's not much new Misty that we can discuss as a group. If you have a problem with the Tolkein, ask a Misty question. It won't hurt you, and all the stupid question topics have been declared open, so you won't get told to shut up. The list is very quiet, so we could use someone starting a new thread. Ok, advice to the newbies. It helps to read all the mail before you reply to anything. Then you can reply to a whole bunch of messages at once. You quote _just_ the part of the message that you are replying to, and write your reply. Then you go on to the next one. If you don't know how to quote, find one of the system administrators or the help desk, and ask them to explain how to do it. If you don't have access to system administrators or a help desk, mention that you are having trouble quoting and which mail program you use. There is probablely someone who uses the same one who can help you. Oh, and on the list we call that quote and reply and quote and reply combo message a "braid". It helps if you write a subject line that describes the contents, but you don't _have_ to. You don't have to braid either, but it cuts down on the load that Vanyel (the listserver) has to process cause there is X of big messages, instead of 5X of little ones. If you need help braiding in Pegasus Mail, private mail me at philcartier-+AT+-earthlink.net, and I'll do my best to help you. I'm going on Christmas break tomorrow, so I'll be sorta lurking. I am really missing you all; everyone just disappeared. I first realized how attatched I really was to all of you, and to this list, the first weekend I was signed on when the mail *really* slacked off. It was worse over thanksgiving, and even worse now.....come back soon! I really want to have a long Misty-type discussion, but I don't have any ideas right not and there aren't enough of us to get the ball rolling. Kawry and Emily have made some comments on focus stones, and why we only see the Herald-Mages in Vanyel's time using them. I would suggest that the focus stones were somehow necessary to being Guardians (those four are the only Mages we see working with the stones. Not to say they're the only ones who do, but----) Once Vanyel created the Web, it was connected to all the Heralds, and Guardians were not necessary anymore. And so, focus stones weren't needed---and it was all centered around that "heartstone" that Vanyel created. Actually, I think this supports Kawry's theory about Tayledras heartstones. So when Elspeth came into power, the Heralds-Mages (of which she was the first, remember in about seven centuries) didn't need focus stones anymore. The Tayledras, who trained El, never did. Remember when they started working in Valdemar, they worked in the room with the Heartstone that, um, You Know created. I hope this all makes sense. I'm not going to think about it too much or I'll probably never send it on. BTW, which is the first Korendil book? *Summoned to Tourney* or *Knight of Ghosts and Shadows*? I wanted to read that series now, but I'm not sure which to start with. May Her light fill your hearts and Her peace fill your tents. Also, even Very true, but I think Cen, if you could see this thing, you'd agree with Mat. Well, I guess I should comment on this subject since this was my first Misty book too. I agree and enjoyed the first one, I think that one of the many problems of the series as a whole was that the actions weren't always consistent. Though a well thought out storyline might have helped smooth this over a little. I think that all the mages of Vanyels type of magic used them. I remember in the last Vanyel book he used his focus stone when he fought Learath(sp?). I think that the most likely reason that there are no focus stones now is that Darkwind and everybody else is using a different disapline of magic. Did it not strike everyone else as being quite a bit more shamanic? Even if it wasn't that lets remember that there were several hundred years between the two story arcs. The theories of magic may have changed to the point that focus stones were no longer needed. I hope she feels better soon. You know, I would really be devastated if I had to sub from the list right now. The only friend I have right now is my soul-brother Emmett and you folks. I got a really nasty e-mail from a former friend last night and I started crying. But stopped and started smiling again when I finished reading all my mail from you. This is truly the best list in the entire multiverse. Maybe this X-mas won't be so hard because I have you to talk to. I lost my dad to a brain tumor Christmas Eve morning in '93 and it's still pretty tough. He was only 47 and me, 23, but I stayed with him and took care of him until his death. He was at home so that was hard afterwards. I kept hearing sounds and his voice. I don't live there anymore but a day doesn't go by when I don't think of him. Sorry that was pretty sappy and teary. It hits me like that sometimes. Okay, let's go on. I still haven't read SRising so didn't know about the painter. ARRGH! I _need_ to get that book!!! Um, David? With address of Empress100-+AT+-aol.com? Are you a newbie or a lurker? Or am I just seeing things again? Knight of Ghosts and Shadows. Great book! Love Kory! ************ Kerowyn, what do you want to discuss about DT? Happy to. ************ Danyel - Sig looks fine with me! ************ Cenny noted that you don't find magic rings and such. I was thinking about it and the only magic items I could think of were Need and the other sword he mentioned, the dagger with the trigger spell in Tashir's castle, the Leech daggers and the Hawkbrothers mask with the magic stone to call Tayledras that Savil had. Any others? ************ Which brings me to Focus Stones. IMHO, the focus stones never were as integral to magic as the matrix stones in Darkover were to focusing Psionics. Van and company used the stones to make channelling the magic easier, but they didn't HAVE to have them. We are told that most knowledge of magic and its use is hidden, so no reason for Elspeth to learn to use them. And the Hawkbrothers usually didn't bother, since its not a "have to" but a "nice to". ************ obMisty: The Bard's Tale series and the Bardic Voices always seemed kind of tied together to me. Free bards and gypsies and the gypsie elves. Bardic magic, etc. It seems, that the one series was set several hundred years earlier. Any takers? ************* Good luck on finals, all! I >remember in the last Vanyel book he used his focus stone when he >fought Learath(sp?). Hmm. I honestly don't think that there's any evidence that _only_ Guardians used focus stones for their magic... But there is also no evidence I can remember that contradicts it. I don't think the bit David cites (where Van uses his focus stone in the battle with Leareth's pet sorcerers) is evidence against the Guardians only theory, cause Van was a Guardian. What we need is a good look at the training of a Herald-Mage... I just had a flash, I remember one of the Herald-Mages (Savil?) saying how she was grateful about which stones she worked best with cause they were cheap, and that others in her training group worked best with things like rubies and emeralds... I think it was sparked by someone giving someone else a focus stone that didn't work for first someone, but did for the giftee... For some reason I think this is early in MPromise, but I'm not sure... If someone could find this scene it might give us the proof that's needed (or it _might_ confuse the issue further). Oh, and Tresta, the first book is Knight of Ghosts and Shadows, but you can read them outa order just fine. The library had Summoned to Tourney, but not KoGaS, so I read it (not knowing it was a sequel) and really liked it. Unless you become a true fanatic about these books, skip Bedlamz Boyz cause it's _really_ stupid. Ellen Guon shows promise, but it's still stupid. It fills in some of the blanks nicely, but just doesn't work right. Oh, has anyone else noticed that the elves in the Urban Fantasies and Alanda all look sorta the same, but not quite? Cause the ones Ellen Guon writes about have blue cat eyes, the ones in Alanda have amber, and the ones in Fairgrove, Outremer, Sundescending and Misthold all have green. They all are described as having the same body build and facial features, so what's with the eyes? I kinda think that it's an indication of race (if elves even have races), but it could just be that they didn't proofread well enough. Also, I never found >>>"Imzadi" (P. David) as wonderful after that relationship developed.<<< Do you keep up with Deep Space 9? I think I missed several episodes of TNG back when it was on (horrified looks from everyone -- Summersong missing even a tiny bit of Data???), but whatever happened to the Troi-Worf relationship? I know it was there -- can't remember if it was before or after Worf was paralyzed in that cargo bay accident, and before he went a possibly life-threatening surgery, he asked Counselor Troi (by first name, I believe;)) to be the surrogate mother of his son, Alexander. So, back to the original question: Whatever happened to Troi-Worf relationship? Now, Worf is with Jadzia Dax (a Trill), and it seems more.... I don't know.... They seem to be a better couple. I bet Worf is more attracted to Jadzia because *she* is trained in the Klingon fighting techniques, esp. that wicked sword whose name escapes me right now (another horrified look -- Summersong doesn't know the name of a Klingon weapon?). BTW, I thought Imzadi was good *anyway*! If you have not read it, and if you're really into all things Trek, YOU MUST READ IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think I said something to this effect a loooong while back, but I'll say it again: YOU MUST READ IT!!!!!!!!! Stupid me let a friend borrow my only copy, and by the way she reads, I won't have it back till January, unless she was reading it while she was sick. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Welcome, Daniel, Shadow Wolf, Kathy, and Mark! Hope you like it here.... Don't worry, we don't bite -- not much anyway. Daniel -- On DT, we do discuss DT occasionally, but many people here who has read this didn't really like it, so sometimes we bash DT a lot. Personally, I loved the three DT investigations books, my favorite being Children of the Night. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SONG-CHARACTER REVIVAL!!!!!! "What If It's You" by Reba McEntire for Firesong when he's thinking about his relationship with An'desha, and when he's thinking about Silverfox. Textevd: Chorus: "What if it's you What if our hearts were meant to be one What'll I do Knowing that I"ll never love anyone As much as I do love you What if it's true What if it's you" And the next verse: "If destiny called and I missed my cue Do I get one more chance, oh how I wish I knew I'll never again put my heart in the hands of fate If it's too late" What do y'all think? And "Blue" by LeAnn Rimes ( -- she is *so* fabulous; she's 14 and she sounds like Patsy Cline) for Dirk (AFlight or was it Fall? When he gets drunk off his derrier) "Blue, lonesome, lonesome for you Tears fill my eyes till I can't see Three o'clock in the morning Here am I Sitting here so lonely So lonesome I could cry" Or "Hurt Me" by LeAnn Rimes for Firesong & An'desha: "Just when I thought I found someone I could trust, You took away your love and you hurt me" Or "Honestly" by LeAnn Rimes (fave song on the album) for the same couple: "If it's time for you to fly, I can't hold you anymore." I know, I'm in a country music kick right now. My mother bought the LeAnne Rimes CD "Blue" Saturday, and I borrowed it from her. And I have that new Reba CD, which absolutely rocks. It's not that I love country music -- I like individual artists, like Reba, LeAnne Rimes, Garth, and Bryan White. And when I'm in love, I go on a Reba kick, and LeAnne's fairly new to me, so I guess when I'm in love, I go on a "sentimental" kick, and the closest to sentimental I will *ever* get to is Country music. I'll never listen to the cheesy crap (TINAF) like Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men, which is what my crush (currently my Duet Acting partner for Speech) listens to. I need to convert him to Elton John or Reba.... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Tolkein: If I wanted to start on Tolkein, should I start with "The Hobbit"? My DA partner is trying to start me on that, but I'm reading 6 books simultaneously: Ender's Game Ruby Slippers & Golden Tears (excellent antho) S&SIII Pegasus in Flight (yes, I'm still reading that) Wonder Boys (not SF/F -- it's by Michael Chabon. So far so good) Lucy Gayheart by Willa Cather Maybe I'll have time over the bread to read "The Hobbit". Meanwhile, I'm trying to convert him to Misty-dom. What do you think I should start him on? He loves Tolkein and Star Trek. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I know, I said I'd be lurking for a while. But my bud Mel and I have settled out our differences, Mark Anderson is my DA partner (yay!) and we might do "The Owl and the Pussycat". Do y'all know that play? Do you know the movie with Barbra Streisand about the prostitute who thinks of herself as a model/actress and a bookstore clerk who thinks of himself as a writer? That's what we may be doing, if Act 3 can fit into a 10 minute time frame. Anyway, enough of that. Gotta go now -- bye!
