It seems to have something to do with their Guardianship, pre Web. But I don't think this proves anything either way; we don't see enough mages of any kind using stones to determine who would have used them or what their purpose might be. I was just offering a theory. I just didn't want you all to misunderstand and think I was making an asolute statement about Guardians and stones, because I wasn't at all! :-) I know the scene you mention Emily; it *is* in the first pages of _Magic's Promise_, when Vanyel gives Savil the rose quartz. She comments on how she thought she got off well with rose quartz because it was cheap and available, not realizing how hard it was to find a stone large enough and unflawed. She mentioned two others......Derdre and somebody who had topaz and ruby. I got the impression these were previous Guardians, but who knows? *I* sure don't. (I have a sudden urge to cover my head now and say "don't hurt me". I am shutting up. Just didn't want anyone to misunderstand.) :-) Hmm. BTW, there is a Companion Derdre in _Sword of Ice_? Some authors get annoyed if their chars' names are used, and I guess quite a lot of authors' lawyers get annoyed. I'm very risk-averse, so I'd rather not take the chance. And some authors have "spies" in the club/list/whatever to make sure that there's no infringement on their copyright. ~~END~~ ~~dwarves~~ Liha'irden: didja ever notice that whenever there's a dwarf in a book he's dead meat? Myles: Since we're on Tolkien right now, Gimli didn't die, only Thorin Oakenshield died in the Hobbit. /me frowns and tries to think. I'm not sure about the Terry Brooks' stuff. His writing is very Tolkienish, and though I've read all the Shannara stuff, I never reread it, and by the end of it, I was only buying it so I'd find out how it ended, and not b/c I loved it. It's not a bad series, just very heavy, and long. Oh wait, I was talking about dwarves. Um, in Guardians of the Flame (I've only read the first book), the dwarf did die, but he was resurrected. I don't know if that counts. ~~END~~ ~~Why are we discussing Tolkien?~~ Myles: Well, a few days ago, we were on McCaffrey, and no one seemed to mind. And when I first joined, there was a whole bunch of Star Trek stuff. Even if Misty's written a lot of books, there are a finite number of things we can talk about. Think of it as fluff, maybe it won't bother you so much. It's not as off-topic as say, the chocolate stuff we've been talking about. /me shrugs. I love Misty's work, but I can't just keep talking/reading about her. Also, since people put stuff in the subject and put little headers inside the post, just skip through the Tolkien parts if it bothers you that much. ~~END~~ ~~Healing~~ Mat: Well, IIRC (and I think I practically have Arrows memorized), they can Heal bones, just not speed-Heal them. Myles: If gryphons' bones undergo too much speed-healing, they become weak and it sort of messes up their flying, right? Is this true for other species as well? ~~END~~ I'll have to unsubscribe by Saturday (or maybe go on digest or postpone or whatever, gotta check the FAQ) coz I'll be without Net access for a couple of weeks. I'll be visiting a friend in Chicago, who I actually met in a diff. club. I've talked to her on IRC and over the phone, but I haven't seen her (though I do have her pic). I'd like to add that since the Tayledras didn't use focus stones, when Elspeth learned to use her Gift, she probably learned to focus without one. IIRC, the Tayledras could invoke a form of the Truth Spell without much meditation or chanting. I think with magic, they work the same way; they are more focused in their training. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Okay, this is kind of a fluffy survey: Which is more comfortable writing: Poetry or prose? I love the Diana books. I know that everyone seems to like Children of the Night, but I really like Jinx High. I herad the last time I was on this list that a new company had bought the rights to the books that occured between Children of the Night and Jinx High and were going to publish them. It was written by Juanita Coulson (edited, whatever) but I do believe (I think it said it in the forward) that it was approved by Misty. Then again, in SF, a lot of stuff one would THINK would be canon, wouldn't be. Just because something is not CANON does not make it a valid source... right? ===== Mat wrote (about PHOENYX; KEEPERS OF THE FLAME) < -- I bet I have some Heather songs you don't still! )>> *giggle* I DO have one. It's about a fifteenth generation copy though. NO FAIR! *drool* The music is delicious. JAKE'S TOP TEN THEORIES WHY KEEPERS OF THE FLAME WILL NOT GO BACK INTO PRINT. 10 - Like the Tickle Me Elmo craze, Heather Alexander wants to have the tapes retail for about 1000% over list price. 9 - Other members of Phoenyx would have to quit their jobs in restaurant management, pizza delivery, and auto part sales in order to go back on world tour. (Offended? Well can YOU name anyone else from the band without looking at the cover?) 8 - Cover of Barney's "I Love You" song an embarrassment. 7 - "Bulk eraser? What's that? I'll just put it here on the tape deck..." 6 - Just *had* to use something to copy the live shows on. 5 - Did not want to be associated with "Elric of Melinmnennenbone (sp?)." Who would? 4 - "What do you MEAN, you sold the LAST copy of it? Where am I going to get more?" 3 - Coffee and delicate electric recording equipment -- a no no! 2 - Originally recorded by Heather's Evil Twin whom she wishes to forget. 1 - Master copy of the cassettes abducted by space aliens; they're now rocking to "Creature of the Wood" on Mars. ===== I agree with Mat the Cat in the Hat about Tolkien. Big deal. We talked about Tolkien for a few days. We talk about Star Trek and McCafferey constantly. So there's no big deal. At least it's SOMEWHAT on topic (I'm stretching.. fantasy genre, at least). I despise Tolkien (like I do McCafferey). But I'm not going to complain about it. ===== I *liked* the Bardic Voices and Choices books. What makes them so icky? I don't think they're tied into the Bard's Tale books, though (and me, being a minority on the list about this, enjoyed the Bard's Tale books immensely) *yawn* I guess I should check mail at a decent hour.. off to sleep. It's been awhile, but I thought that during some fight Elspeth > started tapping to focus their attack. Just thought I'd mention it. Yes - and in Storm 2 when Firesong is throwing his wobbly, he notices Elspeth tapping a rhythm as she and Darkdoodit contain him. I think a focus stone was just that, something to focus on, Elspeth found rhythm worked for her. Now this is very distant vague thought - but didn't Falconsbreath have a focus stone - the one Nyara smashes, sending him into the void?? &*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&* There's something about this line of &*&* that makes me think of multiple giggles - don't ask me why - one of those daft associations a psychologist would no doubt find "very interesting". The brain has now lurched into one of the Eddings books, when Garion lights a candle that "giggles", so my head now has an image of a darked, high ceiling room, Doodit (Garion's wife) asleep in a huge canopied bed, and a giggling candle - oy yey, I need some sleep! &*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&* Kerowynn k'Sheyna > Sorry, I forgot that Tarma was the Shin'a'in warrior that trained > Kerowyn, she wasn't the kyree. Geez bad mistake by me, hope you all > forgive me for that ooopsie. Well, not a total oopsie - Waarl did teach Kero - he got annoyed by her mental chatter, or leakage or somesuch, so decided to teach her. Tarm covered the physical stuff, Waarl the mental, and Keth fed 'em, as far as I recall. &*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&* David asks > I do not know what a lurker is so I don't know if I am one. well, I'd make a stab at one who lurks! Hangs around silently, watches and listens without contributing. It's what the busy folk, and those with limited access call themselves 'round here - they're here, they're rooting for the list, following all the reasoned debate and argument, but you don't hear from them so often. &*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&* Bardic voices stuff - I've only read L&W and R&K. Like L&W a lot - it has some scope, if a touch stereotypical at times, I don't think I even finished R&K, but in my head now, I'm mighty mixed up between Jordans travellers - The Leaf and the Way people, - and the ones in L&W. There's another memory of a fantasy book with a strong romany/traveller component - there's The Windsingers by Megan L-something, where Ki is befriended by travellers - maybe that's it. &*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&* Well, we've done half of it - the dreaded move that is. The house is empty, I'm in my new temporary place, and on Jan 3rd the stuff from the house gets moved into the London home. I had to chose a small shelf of books I thought I'd want to read sometime over the next 3 months - not easy, especially with husband and removal man waiting for you to get on with it. So what Lackey have I got? Not a lot actually, I re-read it all not that long ago, so don't feel any great need to have them close at hand. I've got White Gryphon - only read it the once, and that at great speed, so thought I'd give it another whirl, and Firerose, also read just the once and at speed - altho' I've also kept Robin McKinley's Beauty - which I think I pefer. I've kept GGK's Song for Arbonne - just about coming up re-read time on that, a couple of Pratchetts, some Le Carre, oh yes, and a non-fiction on the underworld of 18th century London - a lot of whom lived in the part of London I consider home - thought it was time I stretched the brain cell. Obmisty?? Nope, sorry. The brain is still recovering from a mild dose of alcohol poisoning last night - so I am not at my most sparkling best. I want a plate of cheesy, butter-laden mashed potatoes (real childhood comfort stuff that!), milky drinking chocolate, and my bed, preferably for 10 or more hours. Ah me, all my own fault, you'd think I'd have learnt by now, Esmeralda ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1025 **********************************
