Far-seeing just means that--you can see far away--not like having good sight, but being able to see vast distances away. >If someone could explain >what the main difference is between mage and normal gifts in the subtler >form it would be much appreciated. Well, the mage gift isn't different, it's still a mind-gift, from a broad point of view. I defined what it exactly is above, but the difference isn't in power or anything, just what it actually can acomplish. And, I think, it's about equally common as the rest of the gifts combined. But since it's very powerful, even for weak would-be mages, mroe training is required then for, oh, say...Foresight. LIha' said that mages could use external sources, but, recall, only the strongest can. And also, mind-gifted can use outside sources, but don't really know how..The companions did so for Dirk and El in AFall, iirc. >But now there are no more demons. That is the real reason why I was asking if someone had a list. I have some of the S&S series but not the ones I need. The other stories by her are in the DarkOver books as well. The others I have no idea about. On the topic of DarkOver novels, I didn't really like those stories that Misty put into those books. Well I must say something in this respect. That "flame" was so powerful, beautiful, poetic, etc. that it was very hard to refrain form responding even if it meant one-liners. However, the unnecesary quoting WAS eliminated in all the one-liners AFAIK, so the trasgression was slight. Actually, also, though not brading *is* a problem most of Aistes's burning came about because he didn't snip. > > Lyseth asked: > >Another thing, as the Holy Custodian of the BDay List, you might know how > >many people are on the list here. The other day someone talked about the kind of voice that can make a grocery list sound great. Well, I believe Ken can write a grocery list and possibly make it sound like poetry. And yes, at one point or another we all want to have Ken teach us, but I would be willing to bet that kind of ability can't be taught to that extent. Since I know next to nothing about literature or writing or the learning of the requisite skills, maybe I had better not bet after all. Summersong said: >i finally got to see Les Mis and I absolutely loved it. Wah! I wanna see Les Mis!!!!! (the invisible one begins sobbing and starts to melt around the edges) You'd think that I'd get to visit New York and see Les Mis, since home is maybe four hours away from NYC, right? WRONG! No such luck. To all those who are having trouble finding new Misty: First of all, it helps to live in the USA. Her books get released here first. Second, it helps to haunt your local bookstores. Ask them if they have the book. They won't know that there is a market unless you ask! Third, if you are too broke to buy the books, haunt your local library and make friends with the librarians. They love people who read, and they love people who ask for books. And if you ask for particular books, they tend to appear... But my local library doesn't get Misty hardcovers until at least a year after the release date, so don't expect the books to appear _quickly_. If none of these work, try the online bookstores, like Amazon.com. Two quick things. _Please_ use question marks if you are asking a question. I know it seems like a stupid thing, but it has been driving me crazy! The little voice in my head that reads things to me doesn't know how to say a sentance that ends in a period, but is structured as a question. A related point, please capitalize things like proper names and the beginings of sentances. The lack of capitalization is also screwing up the little voice in my head that reads things. Everything gets run together and kinda mumbled and it is _very_ hard to understand. Also, the mailbox here at home is being kind of screwy, so if you send something here and don't get a reply, we probably never saw it. Please send it again if that happens. So he did think Florian was a demon but at the end came to be good friends anyways. So he could overcome the biases that his people had enacted upon Valdemar and could stop thinking of them as demons.<<< Didn't Karal think that they were demons until Ulrich explained to him what whatshisface (the Herald who escorted them to Valdemar) really is, and Karal freaked for a second. Hrmm... our language really is limited that way... oh well. My .02: Shoot! And here I thought I coined the term about 20 years ago... ah well, for what it's worth, my definition of 'psionics' covers the major categories of psi-goodies: telepathy, TK, pre-cog, psychometry, energyfield manipulation and sensing, dowsing, healing, empathy, clairvoyance, clairaudience, 'channeling', 'finding', deja vu, and ...well...'magic'. For me, 'magic' works like computer programming and systems analysis; I figure out the results I want, and work backwards from there for the spell design and working parameters. I have to debug the construct, and there are ethical considerations, but it works like computers (for anyway - *I'm* convinced that computers are actually brought in from the Pelargirs, and are strange and magical beasts in and of themselves =) ) IMVHO, psionics seems to deal with matter/energy detection/manipulation, and temporal observations - past (psychometry), present (clairvoyance, etc.), and future (pre-cog). I think MageGift (in RL) is hooking into an energy source and shaping the flow to achieve a desired result, and the result can mimic MindGifts, but differs in that a MindGift doesn't usually hook into an external energysource for the powering, but uses the person's own resources. Yes, this is IMHO, and if you don't agree, that's fine! Let me know how define Magegift, and magic...=) Sounds like we could get a good discussion going on just that, but how about this for an additional consideration...is Misty consistent with how she defines and uses mindtalents and Gifts, including MageGift, BardGift, and HealerGift? Another thing I'd like to bring up for discussion is I believe that Velgarth is the setting for both the Valdemar books and BV but after different cataclysms. First, both have mysterious roads made by ancients of some nearly indestructible material. Second, I believe the gypsy meeting place Waymeet and the town Waymeet are in the same location. Third, many of the magical creatures are the same in both books although some are different this could just be the natural evolution of things. If this has already been discussed recently let me know and I will read the archives. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Dec 1996 17:03:59 -0500 From: Rose To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: (it's all right to be)itty-bitty braid Message-ID: <32C98DCF.715-+AT+-ctol.net> >>I mean they are kind of bigotted if they act that way. Did the priests actually allow the peasants see the demons Exactly, the peasants were too afraid to leave their houses at night because they were afraid of the demons. We're dealing with an uneducated populace base here. These people are most prone to superstition and will believe most anything that a person from higher society tells them. Plus the fact that there actually were demons people disapeared from houses, and people who walked at noght also disapeared. I think that's enough to make an educated person nerrvy. I know that Rolan outlived his chosen and then afterwards chose Talia. The Queens own companion I think is different in that he is groveborn. I believe that there would be cases like the living of a companion longer then his chosen the same as there are some cases where a lifebonded person can live beyond his lovers death. Though the only one that was ever mentioned was how Talamir was poisoned and Rolan survived to choose Talia. Thanks for the advice it will help me be able to find the new books much more quickly. I guess for me it is more annoying that everyone talks about when they come out and then they don't show up for a year longer at least. I do go to the library but most still wouldn't know me since there are so many people where I live you wouldn't get to know the people who work there. >Two quick things. _Please_ use question marks if you are asking a question. Maybe Kethry just threw up a gate for em, I dunno...it actually wouln't take too long traveling back and forth w/ those damn shin'a'in horses...Idon't think Tarma and Kethry did the traveling..i think they left it to the kids...(like most parents) or if they did, perhaps only Tarma traveled with them, since Kethry was a little tied down. Hope ya'll enjoy yourselves immensely! We discuss quite a bit of Misty along with some fluffy stuff. If the fluff gets too bad, there are life preservers at the rear of the vessel.... I finished KoGaS today and it was pretty good. The only problem I had with it was Eric. Now before you get out the bar-b-q grills, let me say he's truly warm and caring person.... when he gets his head out of his ass and quits feeling sorry for himself. The angst he felt over Beth's and Kory's attraction very nearly ruined the book for me. Otherwise it's an excellent book. I adore Korendil and Beth is such a strong character (reminded me of our WandSworn! ;); I was very impressed. Hopefully, StT is better. I'm only halfway thru SoI but will let ya'll know my opinion of it when finished. Happy New Year everyone!
