Look how they killed people in the fires of cleansing just to get rid of the gifted. When Vanyel turned back the demons on Karse that was when they started hunting down the mages in the employ of the king. So really what could you call people like that. I think that "psionics" generally refers to psychokinesis and the various "pathic" powers (empathy, telepathy, etc.) It isn't quite the same thing as the mage gifts. I would generally say that the Mindmagic, as practiced in Valdemar, is much closer to psionics. And there is a perfectly good term for the Mage Gifts in English: magic! If you want a really good series of introspections on the exact differences between "magic" and "psionics", you might want to check out the "Warlock" series by Christopher Stasheff. That is one of the main themes of the first several books. > Hrmm... our language really is limited that way... oh well. This is probably because such things are not part of our reality. While a few people on the periphery of our society may believe in magic, the vast majority does not, so we have no real use for precise terms, nor would there be any clear referents for them, if they existed. If you want, I can provide my own personal system of magic-related vocabulary, but it would not be part of any widely accepted brand of English. -----EOM/BOM On Tue, 31 Dec 1996, Lani wrote: > For me, 'magic' works like computer programming and systems > analysis; I figure out the results I want, and work backwards > from there for the spell design and working parameters. I think that one of the basic differences between "magic" and "psionics" involves how the power relates to the basic reality of the world. I think that you can treat magic like a science to a point, but there are some fundamental differences between psionic powers (which do not seem to violate the basic physical laws of reality) and magic (which frequently does). Although, I will admit that Misty seems to want her system of magic to obey fundamental laws like conservation of energy and matter. On the other hand, a survey of the fantasy field will show that for most writers, magic does not need to obey these laws (creation of energy, resurrection, etc.). While it is true that many of the *effects* could be duplicated without going outside the "laws of physics", it is also true that this is not what is happening in most fantasy. Magicians *can* create energy and matter from nothing, etc. -----EOM/BOM On Tue, 31 Dec 1996, Brian Bennett wrote: > Another thing I'd like to bring up for discussion is I believe that > Velgarth is the setting for both the Valdemar books and BV but after > different cataclysms. This is an interesting hypothesis and I certainly don't want to squelch discussion (Really! =) ), but the evidence provided could also be used as an argument that Misty just wasn't feeling very creative about sketching in the background worlds for both stories (she really does ignore setting to a large degree). For one thing, both the mysterious roads "of the ancients" and the magical creatures that she uses in both Valdemar and BV are fairly conventional decors in Fantasy-Fiction. The road motif is at least as old as Tolkien (the roads of the King's of Arnor and Gondor) and reached there zenith in the work of Andre Norton (who we *know* that Misty admires enough to collaborate with). Almost all of Norton's Witch World and Forerunner books have mysterious roads in them. As for the magical long-leggity beasties, I haven't noticed any critters in Misty's books that aren't fairly standard Fant-Fic fodder. The only ones that are unique to her work are the chirras, as far as I know. You know, now that I think on it, it occurs to me that almost all of the Pelagir Hills creatures and the wasteland created by the Mage Wars is a very transparent gloss of Norton's Witch World stories about the Dales (the Gryphon series, the Jargoon Pard, etc.) Especially the vignette where Waarl joins Tarma and Kethry. That story has exactly the same flavor and feel as Norton's Dales stories. -----EOM/BOM On Wed, 1 Jan 1997, Elven wrote: > Hmm...I believe Iheard something the other day about that...something > like Madonna pranced up n said, "Listen, you can stop looking, 'cause > I'm the best for this film and you should use ME". I think she even agreed to be paid only 50% above the other actors, instead of 100% ;P (that last part isn't reliable , just me speaking)<<< I heard from my long distance bud Carl that Madonna made the videos for that song with the bullfighter (I'm blanking on the title) and "You'll See" which is a sequel to that other video just because she wanted the part for Evita. He read that in Entertainment Weekly, I think, and that really pisses me off. Those two videos were nice, but if she did that just because she wanted the part, she ought to be cast out of the music industry! A music video, IMVHO, should be a representation of what the singer feels when (s)he sings a song, not shooting for something that (s)he may achieve by doing the video. A perfect example is "The One" by Elton John. That video is beautifully picturesque, portraying the ideas of the song as written. I don't know if EJ perceived the song as shown in the video, but the video conveyed the meaning of the song (at least to me) so powerfully that I still get a little misty-eyed whenever I see that video, and the song is one of my all time favorites by anybody. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ObMisty: When is New Year's Day for Valdemar? I think they mentioned something like that in Arrows trilogy, but I can't remember. This is my first post this year -- so, best wishes for the new year to all of you! I mean demons at night. Would you believe >that if you were told that? My point is that why would people believe >it if there really is no proof about it. I guess, I'm atributing it to some sort of faith in Vkandis sunlord. I don't get the impression that the people ever thought ill about their godhead and just accepted what the priests did. When peoples emotions are tied into religion, then they can make some incredible leaps of faith. I'm just saying that since their is no evidence tha the people ever thought of mutiny against the Sunlord, then they must believe in his powers. I f a priest of that power tells someone that he conjurs demons in Vkandis name (which they really did) Then I don't see any reason to think that the person would doubt what they were told. >Tell me now if you lived back then >would you believe everything that you were told? But, There actually were priests who were conjuring demons! We have it in Storm Warning when Karal talks about Ulrch having been a Blackrobe or redrobe or whatever color they were. Also, when Karal explains, we hear examples f demons from the olden days. But, probably the best evidence for the people to believe in the demons even if they personally didn't see them is the song "Demonsbane". Remember how Vanyel turned the demons back on Karse? I don't think that that was an even that was soon forgotten, considering the thought that Karal had about how he was meeting the people that *the evil (or what he said)Vanyel* had come from. These people's belief in demons was not something that ws fostered over night. They have a longstanding tradition with demons to look back on. As for the near past, I don't think the priest were against showing of their demons to the populcace in order to have more control over them. >You would think so. But how do they know that the priests didn't just >appear and take them, if the people asked uncomfortable questions >wouldn't that be easier to believe then I think I answered this further on, but hold on a minute and I'll find textevd about their actually being true demons Aside from *Demonsbane* there's page 79 in SW when Karal says "His [Ulrich's] duty in the former days, according to the Writ and Rule, was to summon demons on the orders on the Son of the Sun, and send them against the enemies of Karse. It was not a duty he took any pleasure in." And page 89 in SW There were even those at the borders who wanted the demon-summoners back. At least when demons roamed the night, the bandis stayed hidden, .... There were plenty of border dwellers who feared the Rethwellens, the Valdemarans, and the Hardernens on the other side of those borders, and wanted the demons and their summoners to kep the"foreigners" away. It seems that the peole were very well acquainted with the demons, and didn't need any more proof that they existed. The priests were used to counterfeit miracles like the ones they had set up when Solaris was truly chosen, yes, but I don't remember it saying anywhere that the priests counterfeited being able to summon demons. I've been something of a lurker for the past few days and have read the posts recently put out. Am I in over my head? I've read only a few Mercedes Lackey books (Born to Run, When the Bough Breaks, Winds of Fate, halfway through Winds of Change), and everyone else seems to know so much more than me! I'm overwhelmed! What do you suggest? Stay, read her books, and discuss, or leave,, read her books, and come back, or never come back again? Message-ID: <199701020032.TAA15742-+AT+-mime2.prodigy.com> tasha- don't be concerned that you haven't read enough books! i've read most of them, but they usually talk about the two trilogies i haven't read yet, so i'm a wee bit in the dark, too. my suggestion to you would be to stay here- maybe lurk about a bit unless you have something to say- and read the Storm-whatever books. work backwards from there. that way you'll pretty much get what people are talking about for now, and you can brush up on your valdemarian history from there. (my personal favorites were the vows and honor books, which have nothing to do with valdemar at all) i hope you enjoy the list! ---liha'irden ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Jan 1997 19:53:01 -0500 From: Chris & Sean Talbot To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Newbie says hello Message-ID: <199701020053.TAA20496-+AT+-nemesis.idirect.com> >What do you suggest? Stay on the list and read at your own pace. People here are kind enough and would help you with any parts of her work. As for not knowing as much as the rest. Don't worry you will learn about her soon enough. I mean we all had to start out and read one of her books. Out of the books you said you have read I have only read Winds of Fate. The others I may eventually read but until I do I just don't really pay attention to the posts. Now we discuss here lots of topics, most vary and some are always about the later books. The recent discussions were on the magic and the mind gifts. I was one who asked a question about what was the difference between them. Not all discussions here are about Misty, some in my knowledge have been about other authors who people recommend reading. Well I guess I should sign off. This is longer then it needed to be I guess but hopefully your decision is to stay with us and read the books at the same time.
