I'm back!!! Wow 43 messages! Guess I should be a little relieved that not all 300+ of us write at one time, I'd never get through them all! Welcome to all the newbies (even though I'm sorta a newbie myself) :) Stay with us, don't leave!!! I get lost every once in a while and I have read the books ('cept the Arrows books), but it's been awhile since I've read them and I'm rereading the ones I have. This is a great place for all people who like Misty's writing :) I love it here! AHHHH!! *gulp gulp gulp....." > Wonderful Idea time: Madonna should do the music for the LHM and she > could do the voice of Yfandes! WHAT!?!? No I can't agree with this, sorry. I used to like Madonna until I saw her concert in Nice, France (that was a few years ago) but I can never look or hear Madonna the way I used to anymore, she's "too much" for me to handle. You can only go so far with sexual acts on stage and she treated her fans like S*&^ too. She's definately not a Misty material girl. *leaps behind the virtual stable door to avoid the snowball* Mishi wrote: > I think that the Companions don't choose to Speak to everyone because > they do not wish their Heralds to know that they are reincarnated > Heralds. Why didn't Vanyel come back as a Companion? Was it because he gave everything he had to save Valdemar or because he was the Last Herald Mage? I think it would have been appropriate if he had come back to be Elspeth's companion (don't get me wrong I love Gwena) since she is the first Herlad-Mage since Vanyel. Or is it only Heralds that haven't been lifebonded that come back as Companions? I think I missed something :( Shadow Wolf wrote: > On another subject, since the name Shadow Wolf has not been > received very well I will be searching for another usename. "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" is the ONLY thing they advertise for Evita here! After hearing the original cast recording of the song, Madonna does butcher it, she doesn't put enough emotion into the song. It's like having The New Kids on The Block do "Prima Donna" in Phantom of the Opera (gee that WOULD be a site!). And yes, Madonna is a good actress and a fairly good singer but she's a pop artist! She doesn't know Broadway. I didn't even agree with Donnie Osmond playing Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Drat. I ~definitely~ need to do some rereading. I guess that puts the question of whether the first Companions were new spirits or old souls, anyway. Maybe the Grove-born get the memories of their predecessors, without being reincarnated...? That would explain a few things, like Rolan's all-wise character in Arrows and, at the same time, some of his mistakes. Though Rolan ~could~ have left Talia and Chosen someone else. Instead, he was willing to drain himself to the point where he could have died, Dirk in tow. OTOH, she was rare in her abilities, and not exactly easy to replace. Sigh. "Elves. Not snipping and braiding is different; that irritates the entire list, and in that case, he just voices a gentle reminder. If names were really something to irritate anyone, I would have been toast by now. At least a hundred times over. One for every one of my names ::laugh:: Mmmm. TTFN! Brian, I don't remember saying anything about your name, good or bad. Actually, I have nothing agianst ShadowWolf as a name. In fact, I generally do *not* like names from Misty's books for list members (It seems somehow presumptuous to co-opt such a name for one's own personal use). Names in the same style, yes, but not from the actual books. So, ShadowWolf would be a cool use-name style of name without "claiming" a character's name. Yes, that is why I thought ShadowWolf would be a good name to use, because I used the Tayledras style to come up with the name in the first place. >So, ShadowWolf would be a cool use-name style of name without >"claiming" a character's name. Thank you for endorsing the name ShadowWolf, Cennydd. Now I'm wondering if I misrepresented Mel's position concerning my name as well? I apologize if I have done this. Please let me know how you feel about the name ShadowWolf, Mel or is it Auntie Mel. I don't want to be presumptuous. On the subject of Xanth, which I recall was highly unrecommended, the first trilogy (Anthony trilogy=3*3 or 9 books) is pretty good, the second mediocre, and I decided I wouldn't get any more after that and the rest of my family didn't seem to get them, either. Weird. But most of Anthony's stuff is of the same catagory: If you are in your early teens its pretty good, late teens its ok, over twenty, pretty bad (I wonder why my dad still reads them....). I'd only recommend the first three of Apprentice Adept, though I still think most of Incarnations of Immortality is better than the other stuff. One author I have to recommend enthusiastically is Anne McCaffrey. For those of you who really don't like sci-fi, there's always Pern, I'd start with the Harper Hall trilogy (Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, Dragondrums, don't quote me on the order), they go pretty quickly, and if you don't like them you won't like Pern. I seemed to like Dragonsdawn, so I must like sci-fi in my fantasy. They have gone down hill of late, and personnally I didn't much like All the Weyrs of Pern. If you are willing to try sci-fi, though, McCaffrey would be a very good author to try. She has one series with all the mind-magic of Valdemar but futuristic and proven. That starts with To Ride Pegasus and Pega sus in Flight, though those two are not my favorite. I'd start with The Rowan, as the first two do not matter where they go in the series. They're just background. Also there is the Crystal Singer Trilogy that I think is pretty good. The Ship Who Sang is the only non-collaberation in a series of collaborations, and it's the first one. The Ship Who Won, the most recent in that series is kinda fantasy, but my favorite is The Ship Who Searched (didn't Misty collaborate that one, must be why I like it so much...) Terry Pratchett: Yes! Start anywhere, just read them! Remember that the Disc World is flat and riding on the back of four elephants who in turn ride on the back of a giant turtle, though the gender of the turtle is still under investigation. And remember to read the footnotes. One author that I haven't seen mentioned is Jody Lynn Nye. Mythology 101 was great IMVHO, and I think she did Taylor's Ark and Medicine Show as well but those are sci-fi. My personal recommendation: Read Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land, even if you don't like sci-fi, but try to find the uncut version which only came out a couple years ago: it's better uncut. Hello Morgause! Welcome to the club. I'm a newbie myself, if you would like me to forward the general lay of the land that Ele sent me, let me know. It answers a lot of questions. ShadowWolf: Keep the name, if you like it. Who are Mel and Cennydd to tell you what you should be called? ObMisty: Does anyone other then me want to know more about the founding of Valdemar? I mean, we get tantalizing tidbits in AotQ and SBreaking, but all they leave me with is hunger for more! ::Backs up to position under table in fear of how this post will be received:: Liseth Goddess Pretender of Running Away and Hiding Under Tables. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 03 Jan 1997 22:06:37 +0000 From: David Maginnis To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Authors Message-ID: <32CD82ED.56A5-+AT+-netcomuk.co.uk> Hi everyone, Has anyone read Elizabeth Moon's 'Deed of Paksenarrion' trilogy?.I think it's one of the best series ever written.By the way anyone who sent me personal email in the last week, could you re-send it,I downloaded it and my computer crashed before I could read it! lol David ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Jan 1997 14:12:17 -0800 (PST) From: Lydia Hales To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: help Message-ID: Hey, I'm trying to come up with a good Shin'i'in name. The Kaled'a'in are the same group that Amberdrake and Skan led through the Gate, eventually ending up with the Haileigh, right? (Black Gryphon). In Winds of Change (p 438) Treyvan explains that the Kena Leshya'nay were led by Amberdrake and Skan had been "sent away to find a refuge, and didn't use the Gates to evacuate. Yet Amberdrake, Winterhart, and several others did. And Skan, Aubri, and Kechara escaped from Ma'ar's stronghold through a gate to Urtho's tower, and then through another Gate to meet up with Amberdrake's party. So, how did they meet with each other? It sounds like there were two different parties of the Kaled'a'in. Or conflicting stories, anybody have any ideas?
