And "hi" and hugs to moooore newbies! -------------- Brian/ShadowWolf said: > Well, Mel and Cennydd thought that I should pick a name from one of Misty's > books also they just didn't like the name ShadowWolf. Errrr... no, actually I quite like ShadowWolf as a name, and quite frankly I absolutely *loathe* it when someone picks a character's name straight out of a book. (Sorry, Kerowynn, nothing personal - it just pushes one of my buttons.) I do, however, like it when someone takes the time to work out their own name in the same *style* as the book, so yaaaaay ShadowWolf! ShadowWolf, I'm almost certain that this is the first thing I've said on-list about usenames, and I *know* I didn't send you any private mail... I doubt our Beloved Listmistress Mel would do so, and I don't offhand know of any other Mels on the list... and Cennyd says he didn't object to the name either. Soooo... either you got your wires crossed and attributed someone else's protest to us, or there's someone out there taking our names in vain. Hmmmmm. I hope it's crossed wires. Do you still have the message(s), or did you delete? -------------- Kory said: > --nor can I imagine the horrible thought of defiling Misty with...country! > and Aistes protested: > Hey that was a low blow. What would you rather have country or heavy metal > for Misty music. Well, those aren't exactly the only two choices! I think Kory wants filk, not metal, and I've gotta agree with him (and everyone else who thinks that way - last time we had a flurry of "soundtrack for Misty movies" messages, I think most of 'em wanted filk. Heather Alexander!!!!!). Country. Ack! (I got seriously overdosed on *shudder* BAD country when I visited my sister a while ago. She has an all-Country station on ALL DAY as background noise. Ptooie.) Hmmmm. This got me thinking of casting Misty movies... to the best of my admittedly not-perfect recollection, nobody's ever suggested my personal favourite ideas. David Bowie as one of the Tayledras! (Starwind? Starblade? Iceshadow? I think Iceshadow.) I mean, remember him as Jareth in Labyrinth! Yumyumyum! He was even dressed right! And we absolutely HAVE to put Lou Diamond Phillips in as one of the Shin'a'in! (I don't care WHO, just so long as he's on-screen a lot!) ------------- Lydia wrote: > Hey, I'm trying to come up with a good Shin'i'in name. Anybody have some > serious suggestions, and is willing to help, I'd be most thankful. Well, you want serious suggestions, so I won't say "Fred". (Actually, I'm terrible at thinking up names - when I'm writing characters I spend a lot of time looking through "unusual name" books.) If there's an animal you particularly like, you could use that with something in front - like ShadowWolf, or Suncat... err... or you take something from nature and add it to something that fits *your* nature, like Dawnfire, Skyseeker, Starblade, stuff like that. Have fun! Think up several, write 'em down, and see which looks or sounds best to you. And ignore anyone who says "It stinks"! If you like it, keep it! > Re: Kaled'a'in. I'm a bit confused here. The Kaled'a'in are the same > group that Amberdrake and Skan led through the Gate, eventually ending up > with the Haileigh, right? (Black Gryphon). The Kaled'a'in were several clans, including Kena Leshya'nay (Spirit Clan). When they were evacuating, the Spirit Clan, led by Amberdrake and Skan, ended up in a different place from the rest; they stayed Kaled'a'in while the other clans split up into Shin'a'in and Tayledras. > In Winds of Change (p 438) Treyvan explains that the Kena Leshya'nay were > led by Amberdrake and Skan had been "sent away to find a refuge, and didn't > use the Gates to evacuate. Yet Amberdrake, Winterhart, and several others > did. And Skan, Aubri, and Kechara escaped from Ma'ar's stronghold through > a gate to Urtho's tower, and then through another Gate to meet up with > Amberdrake's party. So, how did they meet with each other? It sounds like > there were two different parties of the Kaled'a'in. Or conflicting > stories, anybody have any ideas? Welllll, it could be that the history Treyvan learnt was distorted over time. (Gotta find my copy of Black Gryphon and have a look...) I *think*, from memory, that part of Kena Leshya'nay - the noncombatants and some guards - were sent away some time before everything fell apart totally, because Urtho knew that evacuation would be necessary eventually and wanted to get at least part of it done in advance so that there wouldn't be a mad rush at the end. I can't remember if they used a Gate or not. Then the assassin got him, and there *was* a mad rush, during which the rest of the clan (including Amberdrake and Winterhart) went through a Gate to join those that had gone on ahead... soooo, at the very least they didn't use the *same* Gates as everyone else. ------------- liha'irden wrote: > that's all... i'm sure a good fifteen people will disagree with half of > this post, so i'm bracing myself. Nope - I agree with almost all of that - except the Piers Anthony thing. I think the first three or four of his Incarnations of Immortality series are pretty good, yes, but the rest of 'em... *gack*. He ended up just repeating stuff he'd written for the earlier books, from a different point of view. Verrrry annoying. (Yawn, snore, I read this already...) The name Vanyel is being used and so is Kory (IIRC from your first post to me when I first joined)! I don't remember Kerowyn in BTS or the Winds trilogy using the name k'Sheyna or having TWO 'n's in her name, so technically the name I chose (months before I joined this list) is not from the book and can't be considered copyright infringement (in case anyone was wondering). Lots of people pick names out of books to show how much they like or want to be like that character. But if using this name causes you so much distress well then I guess I'll change it. It just gets confusing to have people from different places calling you by different names, I was planning on sticking with two names, my real name, Running Wolf and Kerowynn k'Sheyna. But Running Wolf wouldn't be original since everyone and their grandma seems to be using it nowadays. So I'll get a new one for this list. TINAF >Hmmmm. Just one teeny insignificant problem...one of the things Elspeth's complaining about is the fact that she thinks she looks plain. Darkwind echoes this by saying that she doesn't look good in her Whites. I'm afraid Winona Ryder isn't plain enough (but we can definately look over that!) I also like Glenn Close as Selenay. [dramatic music off] So the jist of this is that I have a copy of the first volume of the Oathbound series available if anyone wants it. I figured some of you students who are "financially challenged" for books might like a freeby. Anyone who would like it, please just E-mail me privately, and I'll pop it in the mail to the first asker. (Bevie bangs head on wall and mutters "I will carry list of books I own at all times. I will carry books I own at all times.) Obmisty: (Doesn't the book count? Oh well, let's see) Something that has always bothered me (and unfortunately, me-+AT+-work, books-+AT+-home) about Knights of Ghosts and Shadows - Eric saw the "bad elf" (who's name escapes me) riding in a limousine. His daughter was also driving a car. Now it mentions in the second book that it was painful (but not mortally so) for Kory to ride in the mostly plastic car. Now I could assume that the limo was an elven steed, but Misty never mentioned anything about Rhia (? the daughter) having one. IIRC the Savannah Elves said there was a big deal made when one was given an Elven steed, but Rhia was never accepted by the elves in California because she was partly human. So I don't really see her being given an steed. I could be wrong, have been before, will be again. So, does being partially human give her some protection from the allergy to iron? (Weak I know, but since it's keeping me up at night, I though I'd ask.) If you'll recall, elves can protect themselves from Cold Iron by silk. Every time iron is handled (including by the human mage Tannim, which is another question entirely) the handler has silk-lined gloves or the iron is wrapped in silk. Whoever was elven in the limo could have just been wearing silk, like Tannim wears his armor underneath his clothes. >IIRC the Savannah >Elves said there was a big deal made when one was given an Elven >steed, but Rhia was never accepted by the elves in California because >she was partly human. That's probably something you can't escape, even when you're partially elven. And I don't think that the Powers That Be in the elven world would let a child, be it all elf or partially, go without the protection of an elvensteed. Anybody wanna try? Why does Tannim have to use silk gloves to handle iron if he's a human mage? Hope this helps! In BtR, Keighvin can touch iron with only a few problems, and there are a couple of other local elves with the same ability. Apparently they mmm... gave themselves "allergy shots" against Cold Iron. Ria's half human, so that could makes the iron allergy less of a problem (or it could make it _worse_). Or Ria could've been given an elvensteed. Well, in other magical systems (Deryni especially), anything can be wrapped in silk as a kind of cheap, nonmagical protection. I remember Tanimn kept his enchanted crowbar wrapped in silk, and all weaponry on the Fairgrove site was wrapped in silk too. And I remember someone warning Sam that all iron should be wrapped in silk as a kind of insulation. They probably didn't say the insulation part out loud, but I heard it as a kind of subtext. Another skating fan! I didn't get back here til late yesterday cause Mary and I wanted to watch Too Hot to Skate. It was worth it too. I have no idea if there are skating competitions on Velgarth. I would think that you would need a largeish lake that freezes pretty solidly to even get started skating. An ice fishing lake would probably work... Don't mark us off as silly. This bit caused a lot of thinking, and then I went back and looked at what I wrote again. What I was thinking of when I chose astrology was those little two or three sentance horoscopes in the daily newspaper, or in just about every woman's magazine in creation. I also purposely discarded tarot, palmistry and I Ching cause I know that some of the pagans onlist may use them. Try replacing astrology with calculus or physics and see if your reaction is warrented, Jake (because I'm fairly sure that at least one of the early users of calculus believed it could be used for predicting the future...). And I _don't know_ much about neopagans! If I screw up, don't scold me like I should know better. Tell me so I don't make the same mistake again, and explain _why_. I've spent half my life explaining Catholicism to Protestants, and it would be nice if others would explain their religions to me.
