I was unsub'd from the list: Here goes again. When Karal was asked to speak it to everyone else, you are forgetting the DISTANCE involved. Rolan talked to Gwena (who had to trance) when they were at the Taleydras Vale. Talking that far must involve a hell of a lot of energy (remember a lot of Companions had to help with retreiving Talia). IMHO It wasn't that Rolan could talk to anyone using extra effort, it was the distance involved. Also the reason that Rolan couldn't help Talia was that Talia is not a Mindspeaker. The companions (IIRC) can speak to anyone who has even a little Mindspeaking gift, and Talia doesn't have that. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Jan 1997 15:10:20 -0800 From: WinterRobin To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Country & Casting / Names Message-ID: <32D1865C.F78-+AT+-inreach.com> Jaguar wrote: > Hmm.. now where is that.. There are at least two sequels - they're at least as good as the first one, too. err, what were the titles again? One was _Mythology Abroad_, but I can't remember the other one... darn! They've been out for some time - a few years. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Kerowynn/WinterRobin/Running Wolf, I'm sorry if I sounded like I was picking on you - I didn't mean to, honest! I mentioned you and not the others because I've got used to Korendil (at least partly because I don't reread KOGAS and STT nearly as often as other Misty books) and I haven't seen Vanyel post for ages (plus, Listmistress Mel's server is called Vanyel too ). If you want to keep Kerowynn, I promise not to jump on you for it - or if you want to use your real name, I don't think anyone on this list is using Running Wolf. Or am I talking through my hat here? > (Boy am I gonna feel dumb when the textevd rushes in on *that* one!) *snicker* well, you needn't feel dumb on MY account! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peony, DebMats, if you can't get onto the archive page for the digests, you can send an e-mail to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with the subject line blank ("No Subject" will NOT work, as Emily the Invisible found!) and index mercedes-lackey as the message. You'll get sent a LOOOOOOONG list of all the archives; then you just pick out the ones you want, and send another e-mail (still with a blank subject line) with get mercedes-lackey 970106-1045 (you pick out the number bits from the index). You can send lots of requests in the same message if they're all on separate lines; if your mailer won't let you use blank subject lines you could try putting in a space. Believe me, before Our Beloved Listmistress reorganised the archive index, sending e-mails to the listserver was waaaaaaaaaay faster than waiting for the index to load! And Firemistywistywoo, yes, the magewar sub/unsub commands are the same as the mistylist commands. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bevie, BELIEVE me, you aren't brainless - I sometimes manage to buy a book I already have (thankfully, so far it hasn't been expensive!) and once I bought a book I already had even though I *did* have a list of "books I've got" with me!!!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Okay, my friend Max McMurphy (aka my housemate Paul May) asked me to pass on something since he doesn't have e-mail access right now: Question: In "Arrows of the Queen", Ylsa has trouble because of her weapon; "The sword was not meant to be used from a-horseback, and before she'd managed to strike more than half-a-dozen blows, it was carried out of her hands by a falling foe, and she was forced to draw her dagger instead." (pbk p 300). Why _not_ from "a-horseback"?!!! These people spend a very large portion of their lives "a-horseback", some of it fighting - why do they not have a _cavalry_ sword?? It only requires a slight change in hilt shape to turn a narrow-bladed longsword (as all of the cover art I have seen has shown their swords to be) into a cavalry sabre that is just as good "a-horseback" as on the ground. Also (on a sabre), the knuckle-guard or knuckle-guard and cup serves more than one purpose - it both protects the hand, and makes it _much_ easier to retain the weapon when it gets stuck in someone, as it surrounds the hand to an extent and is easy(ish) to get a hold on as the hilt tries to leave your grip. The use of a lanyard from pommel to belt is reasonably common as well; you may use your weapon, but never for long. I have fought with both (although not "a-horseback"; I don't ride that well), and I know whereof I speak. Surely Alberich, if no-one else, would have done something about this by now? Sorry for the acerbic tone, but this sort of thing happens too much, and it really gets me. I am not attacking Misty in particular; I pick things like this in a large proportion of the books that I read, even of the best authors (bar a small list). Max McMurphy/Paul May P.S.: Happy New Year. Mel again: Paul is a temporarily lapsed member of the SCA; he is avidly interested in military history, antique and modern weapons of all kinds, and GMs roleplaying games using that knowledge. Believe me (whimper! ) I can testify to the number of times he reads something in a fiction book, mutters "That's not right!", digs out a hefty reference book and starts waving pictures at me and reading bits out of both books... I mean, a big kick in the 70's and 80's WAS fantasy-related heavy metal (to mind, the band MANOWAR springs to mind, with metal opuses (opi?) about greek mythology) and it was pretty good... I do not know of any fantasy-related country songs. And on a personal note, I really do NOT like the genre (country music, that is.) :) My cousin is a country-western singer, and I hate listening to her songs, and I had a party when they closed down the country station in New York City. *grin* RE: PTERRY Liseth wrote: (about the turtle dying) <>. And, as an aside, the Great A'Tuin, the Star Turtle, is NOT a god. He is merely the being which supports the Discworld on his/her back (never really DID say what gender the Star Turtle was), along with the four elephants (wossname.. whomever. You know who I mean.)
