Okay WoFate middle of page 103 Elspeth is reading in the library says that "the chronicles were unclear. He (Vanyel) had summoned--something. Or rather, he had summoned _things_. Having called them, he did something to them or with them, somehow gave them the job of watching for mages and alerting Herald-Mages to their presence in Valdemar." My theory is that the Companions were more than happy with her going to the Tay-tiddy-doodahs - they'd butted in so much already that if they had *really* not wanted her to go, I think she'd have found herself with Quentin's ol' matey without another thought. Yeah, yeah, so it was a tythe to the Git really - he gets all the good tythes (see below) Anyhow, as the one who trawled WofFate for Kory's magic survey - here's my entry on Gating: The energy for a Gate comes from the Mage, or someone tied to him with a bond as deep as a life bond. A mage tied by a lifebond to another mage can feed his beloved with the energies needed to fuel a Gate spell. A bond as deep as a lifebond is one built between a mage and his victim, when he makes that victim an extension of himself. "try to persuade them to do X; if they start a fight do Y; if it looks as though they're winning do Z; if we win do A", or "Explore the area looking for A; check all rooms as we go past; head towards B if there's a choice; do C when examining doors; watch out for D". The mostly one-on-one bit avoids lengthy player consultation, which would slow things down. It can work fairly well, especially if the DM knows how the players usually react to situations. ObMisty: this is probably similar to the way Valdemar usually runs - there doesn't seem to be much use made of really long distance mindspeech; a lot of the time things must depend on reports from regular patrols, although the web probably makes sure there's a herald around when needed... -- _|_ Jerry Cullingford jc-+AT+-crosfield.co.uk (Work) / | Hemel Hempstead, UK jc-+AT+-selune.demon.co.uk (Home) \_|_ www.selune.demon.co.uk (soon) \__/ ----------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Jan 1997 11:12:33 -0500 (EST) From: Sandra K Haas To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: No Misty content! Sandra, if you are really having squirmle troubles (with attendant shredding by kitty claws), you might want to try wrapping the cats. This is done by taking a nice sturdy cloth (such as a sheet or quilt) and wrapping the cat tightly (but not *too* tightly) in it, with just the head protruding. It doesn't take more than a few seconds extra and it will make handling an excited cat infinitely easier. As for the biting business. The best way to get a cat to open its mouth is to put your palm against the top-and-back of their head and insert your thumb and third finger into the back corners of its mouth. Don't exert much pressure (it isn't necessary) but use your fingers to lever the cat's mouth open and use your hand to hold its head steady. You can then give it its pills or drops. I would recommend using one of those little "pickle grabber" thingies (or better yet a 'screw grabber" like those used by computer repairmen) so that you can get the pill placed on the back of the cats tongue. Otherwise, just use really good aim and drop it back. Immediately close the cats mouth and hold it closed for a second, until they swallow. Whatever you do, don't use a finger or something to "push" the pill into place or get it started, as this will only traumatize your kitty. Anyway, that is the best advise I can give (can you tell that I have had cats for my entire life?). I had a hard time doing it because I was afraid I was going to hurt my cat, but I managed and she took the pills; everything turned out okay. ********************* ObMisty (for the newbies, that's 'obligatory misty reference') Companions and lying: I was wondering, can Companions lie to each other? I got off the list after I mysteriously was re-subscribed, but your e-mail caught my eye before I deleted them. If you'd post this to the list for me, I'd really appreciate it! Okay, I'm in another RPG (Highlander) and what we do is have challenges done on the Sci-Fi Channel's B-Board. The Watcher for the two immortals fighting then writes the account, and who wins is based upon the number of life-points the two have. A player gains life-points by being taught by various immortal teachers. Of course, the head of the RPG (who started the whole thing) is the one who analyzes the challenge and decides who wins, then that's passed to the Watcher, it gets posted in the Watcher archives, etc. etc. etc. Now, for our purposes, we can have mages and heralds and Hawkbrothers, whatever, and the bards can write the accounts down. Life-points can be gained by getting magic training or training that applies to your character, and we go on from there. It's not exactly like the card game Magic, but it's close. One problem, though. In Highlander, two people fight each other, and no one can interfere. How would the characters in our RPG fight? Have two warlords and when someone joins they joions whichever warlord they want? Hope this helps. So I am sorry to say that in there you must not have heard her new album. Which is mostly songs like I would have listened to growing up in the 80's. And recently Dolly Parton has been getting a more pop sound. I recently bought her newest greatest hits album and though her voice sounds old country her music does not. > >Yup, you got it! She is so marvelous .... And Hank Williams is awesome, >too! WEll that isn't always that good. Some of the stuff I have heard says that she has no real experience to base the love songs so some older country fans don't like her for that reason. I know when I first heard her I thought she sounded like she was older country but really she doesn't sound all that much like old county except in three songs. Blue, Hurt Me and the Cattle Song. > >ACK! PLEASE don't put Garth the Greatest with that Elvis-wannabe so close >together in an otherwise great sentence! But I can understand that -- I >mean, there's a Country accent, and there's everything else. I even Okay to tell you the truth for the last 4 years I have listened to modern country and you cannot tell me that people like Reba have a big accent and people like Wynona who doesn't have any or even Shania Twain. Most of the ones that I have listened to for the last 4 years have no accents or the ones they have are so hard to notice that it doesn't bother the people listening to them. Believe me I have gotten two friends into liking country music. My girlfriend who loves Dance music and wouldn't listen to anything but until I showed her how good some country artists are. I will admit that some of them have accents but you can see that in Folk music as well. If you are in Canada you know of the Rankin Family, and Barra Macneils you would know that they have worse accents then most country artists. I have some very good examples of happy country songs. What Made You Say that by Shania Twain. Reba McIntyre most of her songs aren't that sort of songs either. Now I could >assume that the limo was an elven steed, but Misty never mentioned >anything about Rhia (? the daughter) having one. Rhia never had an elvensteed for the same reason the limo isn't an elvensteed, O NLY Seelie court elves can have elvensteeds, they will only serve good people, t hey are easily as intelligent and opinionated as Companions and like companions won't choose to be with evil people. and then Icesong said: >The limo may or may not have been an elvensteed. If you'll recall, elves can >protect themselves from Cold Iron by silk. Whoever was elven in the limo >could have just been wearing silk, The limo was not an elvensteed, see above. Yes, they could have been wearing si lk or even simpler, being quite rich, they could have had done the interior in s ilk.But even if they didn't, the sheer level of padding in limos would help insu late. And as Emily said Keighvin and a couple of other elves could touch iron with very little insulating them, have gotten used to the uncomfortableness by r epeated exposure. Bevie: >IIRC the Savannah Elves said there was a big deal made when one was given >an E lven steed, but Rhia was never accepted by the elves in California because >she was partly human. and Icesong: >And I don't think that the Powers That Be in the elven >world would let a child, be it all elf or partially, go without the protection >of an elvensteed. Rhia was never accepted by the West Coast elves because she and her father were Unseelie. And Yes, getting an elven steed is a big deal. Elvensteeds are great friends and companions not Companions...they really don't give any added protec tion to an elf and they won't serve evil people....Of course, if Rhia had ever t urned completely good, she may have been accepted into the Seelie court, and the n she could have eventually gotten a 'steed. Hey, notice that the elvensteeds aren't tied to a grove? They must be High Cour t. {pj Bevie: >So,does being partially human give her some protection from the allergy >to iron?
